I remember reading from a book or somewhere that positions of officers were given to those from "rich families." That's perhaps why the City Mayor was anxious to provide the best home for him to stay in. They must have done a lot of research since even his driver Franz knew the grandfather's son and daughter in law died leaving room in that house to board an officer. Perhaps coming from a well-to-do family he ignores their her rudeness towards him or the grandfather's lack of communication because he knew what they must be going through. As for the letter I believe in the original story she was his fiance. I don't doubt being a conscientious man he felt breaking up was the wisest thing to do since he had no idea whether he would survive the war. I don't think the fiance wanted to end that relationship. However, it might have been a fixed arrangement so that's why he wanted to explain that letter. In the original portion of the book, it is written she goes by the water and sees him but what she sees instead is a ghost of him. I wished I knew more. However, we can attempt to view this as two souls that almost found happiness but perhaps the next life they will forever know they have found each other again and remain together in peace and love.

Hopefully, someone could shed some light here for me. I've seen this movie 5 times and it only just hit me. At the beginning of the movie, it says it's November 1941. In this scene, it's Christmas Day, the German Captian says it's three months since he's been here. It doesn't add up unless I've missed something. Or unless the movie started in November 1941, and there is a huge time lapse between when their house was requisitioned. Werner didn't arrive until September 1942? Sorry if I've ruined the mojo with my question.

In this movie, Jeanne is developing strong feelings for Werner, even though she knows that her passion for him is forbidden in a wartime situation. She is becoming infatuated with him because of his knightly/ courtly behaviour, impeccable manners and his absolute respect for her as a person besides his obvious physical attraction to her. This movie symbolises the awful socio-economic upheaval that was happening to French people at that time. The moral and physical effects of collaboration and and non collaboration by the French politicians and sectors of French society haunted the French psyche for years afterwards. Women who had liaisons with German servicemen were conveniently used as scapegoats and targets for to cover other people’s guilt and release pent up frustrations. The letter Werner received from Stuttgart, Germany was written by his wife and the photo is of his son. He wanted to explain to Jeanne, that he is married and the affection he has towards her is due to the similarities they share.
An unpublished script talks about the life of Jeanne, the lead character after the demise of Werner in the Russian front and the sudden death of André. She fills the void left by Marie and actively supports the French Resistance while taking care of orphaned Pierre. All this time, Pascal supports her in all of her actions, but just like the coldness shown to Werner she resist moves made by Pascal. However remember that in the first part Pascal says "Jeanne is spoken for" meaning she belongs to him. Eventually Jeanne falls in love with Pascal and starts a family brining up their offspring along with Pierre. In the second part, the character Pascal dominates and shows that Jeanne was his from the beginning.
