"Even though I fall As a weathered tree, pushed down In my husk, life blooms" -Japanese Death Poem Written in honor of the Castle Defenders, long gone.
Similar event happened in Chinese history, nobody dared go pass through that gate after that one defender was dead for an hour, just in case he came back to life..... He fought like a demon, and the enemy could not believe that he was really dead
+Aindrew Wilson There's a strangely familiar story from Japan about a bodyguard who held the gate from a massive invasion force alone. His lord was committing seppuku, and he needed to buy time because the invasion force wanted him to die dishonorably. So the bodyguard stood at the gate and killed everyone who got close. They got scared of trying to fight him in melee because he kept killing everyone who tried, so they shot arrows at him. After getting pincushioned with arrows the bodyguard was... Still standing. After about an hour of shitting themselves because holy crap this guy is invincible, they decided to charge again. Apparently the guy was dead after the first volley of arrows but he was still standing from a combination of rigor mortis and the arrows propping him up, but regardless of that he managed to hold the gate long enough for his lord to commit seppuku.
@Fabrizzio Perfetti Unfortunately, I only experienced armies without a general leading them and winning battles to trigger a general promotion event, I'm not sure about castle town garrisons getting the promotion.
Yari Samurai 1: "Oh Hey Look! its 9 men What are they going to do?" Katana Samurai: "Yeaaarrrrghhhhh!!!!" Yari Samurai 2: "Run! Their Screams are too Frightening!" Yari Samurai 1:"I Don't Care about that! What If They Have More Of These Monsters In That Castle!" *Thus the enemy ran away by thinking that their opponent had more allies in the building with Frightening Screaming power.*
Actually, it happens more than you'd think. All depends on morale. If your troops have higher morale (which is almost always the case in sieges because they have no generals, only captains) you can pretty much get an auto win. You only need to kill a very small number of troops for the to rout. It was just RNG with the kill cam animation. it probably got generated just after the rout. If it didn't he'd have just stood there for a minute then chased them off like a badass. Shogun 2 is fun but it has bugs like that, it shouldn't really have been a death but RNG and all that.
this is the most stupid thing about shogun 2 and atilla, full squads just fleeing, when they could win the fight. "Oh look we're fucking 20 against 3! We're winning! but... we gotta flee..."
+Norman Daniel I think the logic is: "sure, we'll eventually be able to beat them, but I REALLY DON'T WANT TO DIE, so someone else can take care of it.
+Hendrick Dias Not to mention that if that one samurai just had Bladestorm on CD, it would have wiped out all of them so retreating definitely saved their lives!

+Lelouch mooppy I know man, every one look down on Ashigaru and spam samurai on later game. Yari ashigaru can absorb all kind of charge and stand the ground longer than any samurai unit. None of my army i built in shogun 2 doesnt have at least 2 yari ashigaru units.
Just as a shout out for those who don't know, they released a Blood and Gore DLC for this for 1.60, American. Really adds a mature feel and visceral change, it's pretty awesome.
"Those fools! I wish I had men like that fighting for me." Hydarnes in "The 300 Spartans" Courage,no matter how futile,is a trait we all should have. Thanks for posting this!
Shimazu too over rated. They weren't key players in Japanese history during this time... They kept pretty quiet. In terms of power, it probs went Imagawa and Takeda then to Oda => Toyotomi (alliance) => Ieyasu and Date, Hojo, Uesugi and Mori stayed powerful
A similair thing happened to me but it was a lot cooler. It was during a regular battle, only my general was left and the AI had 12 samurai. My general surprisingly didnt flee and fought them. And he killed them till only 4 remained which then fled. I'll always regret that I didn't record that as it was epic!
one thing i like about total war is that you do get those awesome heroic scenes when you got a 1v5 or 5v15 going on and you just say "wow that guy is a boss"
And I now have another story to say. (Empire: Total War Warpath Campaign DLC) As the Iriqoui nations (pardon spelling) I raped the shit out of 5 Minutemen units with just two bowmen garrisoned inside a house, and with one of those being my best general. It ended up with my general's unit vs a good 200 enemies, since minutemen are about 120 each unit. So. Like, 80 vs 200 and I still won. But unfortunantly, Huron-Wyandott decided to take advantage and attack. They lost all but 13 calvarymen. MY GENERAL ESCAPED ALIVE.
It's the guy he just showed getting speared before - it's shot in recorder so he used 2 different angles during the same time frame. So he shows that samurai's demise then goes back in the timeline and focuses on the last one to survive
@mr360man100 It's the same samurai shown earlier in the video, who stabbed the guy in the face. He just took the video back a bit to focus on the ACTUAL last samurai in that battle.
I once was playing Medieval 2 and had a single knight hold a river bridge for like 2 minutes straight. I don't know if it was due to a bug or just poor ai or something, but it was awesome. Gave me time to rally my men and lead a renewed charge. Still lost the battle (we were highly outnumbered), but I wasn't about to let such awesomeness go unanswered.
Units perform a celebration animation when they kill every single person in a unit, or if they manage to chase them down out of bounds. That ashigaru at 0:29 was the last person in the unit, and when he got killed, the enemy celebrated, but too bad for them the Samurai Retainers were still there. :P
The real heroes of battelfield are those little guys, who do this blood job, not well protected generals who get whole splendor of the victory. I really like your vidoeeo :)
Yes, but if you watch the movements of said "2nd Soldier", you'll notice he simply rewound the video so that we could see what was occurring to the "last samurai" during the previous fight-scene when the camera was focused elsewhere. As the "2nd Soldier" clearly dies, the one the camera is last focused on is, in fact, the last warrior. Of course, he may have some mystical ninja who are using their powers of invisibility to hide from all but the most adept observer...in which case, Wizard Eyes.
what he's referring to is that they died, leaving the one in the centre of the camera, the last man. which is why a great number of the enemy suddenly close in from the samurai's right.
The same thing happened to me too, but my retainers were in the point. It was a rebellion that fled after I sent my main force after them. The remaining rebellion is what I accidentally left, and they tried to conquer an undefended fort with only a retainer unit. The rebellion had two Yari ashigaru and one Light Calvary. I settled the samurai retainers in the point and they were getting swarmed, but at that very moment… I learnt that morale is both a blessing and a curse. My samurai retainers barely won through morale victory, and they were chads. Low-tiered Katana Heroes. Just sharing my experience
@mr360man100 Actually, if you watch carefully when he says 'last soldier', he's showing what happened witht he other samurai (who lasted longer) than the first one he focused on at :43 seconds in. So he kinda was the last.
@mr360man100 I believe he edited, and that guy in the background is the soldier he recorded earlier and when he died he scrolled back and started recording the next soldier. I believe this is taken from a saved battle replay :) Still awesome battles there, they took the enemy morale away, hehe.
Yup. Gold Edition has all the Kingdoms campaigns, like Americas, Crusades, Brittiania.... plus the normal Europe campaign. It's got everything. I love it.
I like how in this game your soldiers will fight to the death and still have a chance to win were as in total war the death of your general can cause your whole army to route.
That's where Fall of the Samurai gunners are needed. Those samurai would be torn to pieces even before they reach 500 meters in front of the gunners. :D Epic though, good video. ;)
gentlemen, if i can also pitch in on the convo, the mongols came in quite a while after the romans had fallen. If you want to make a comparison between two, you should compare the Huns vs the Romans. The Notorious Nine of Kochi Castle, valiantly defiant against the Tokugawa Samurai thugs in their last stand during Hideyoshi's invasion of Shikoku, circa 1587
The attacker has the initiative. If you just march into your enemies defense then you can of course expect massive casualties. You don't charge uphill into a prepared spear wall. If you have bows, shoot them for a while. If you have cav, move them to the flanks to force your enemy to change positions. In other words, never just attack from one direction and try not to charge uphill.
@schachtrooper no whats unrealistic is that they routed when only a few enemies were left. in reality individual soldiers are not that stupid regardless of other moral factors if they see that victory is gauranteed they are not gonna run away
Samurai Retainers are really good, the can inflict triple the casualties you inflict them, even if you kill them (that’s what happened to me, at least)
I have that on as well, but i just cant seem to get the reflections right, oh well, you spend more time controlling your units then zooming in and watching them fight so i guess i just have to live with it.
you have to know what to attack and when to let them come to you. its real strategic, I get where you're coming from though. It took me some time to learn how to play this game.
Yari Samurai 1: "They're too strong! RUN!"
Yari Samurai 2: "Guys! We killed the last one! ... Guys?"
Girom Christian Calica HAHAHAHAHAHA I LAUGHED SO HARD AT YOUR COMMENT
@DEEPSAGAR MANDAL WHERE?
Out of respect for the defenders who fought so valiantly, they left the castle unconquered.
that's deep

Are you telling me that you lost all your men, but were victorious?! Wish you had included the battle report.

Who was that? Also they should have just got Lu Bu. I here there is no one who can provide him with a decent challenge.
houkou1 Oh god I've spent too many hours of my life on those games. Sick references bro.
+Aindrew Wilson I read about that guy. Too sad i forgot his name.

Very delayed, but I believe the person in question would be Dian Wei.
if that retainer lived, I would have promoted him to General Retainer with a badass three star for that last stand
Napoleon637 three star general? He deserves to be the daimyo and become the shogun to tell the tale
@Fabrizzio Perfetti Unfortunately, I only experienced armies without a general leading them and winning battles to trigger a general promotion event, I'm not sure about castle town garrisons getting the promotion.
Pyrrhic victory
Not really if none survived xD , maybe draw but there is no draw in this game so yeah..
There is a draw in naval battles.
Like this one for instance th-cam.com/video/goVwSk2dHQY/w-d-xo.html
Ah I see, a man of culture...
lol,
attacker:Hey guys there's only 1 enemy left!
attackers:nah man fuck him we're retreating.
They were given the greatest gift. An honorable Death and victory
Yari Samurai 1: "Oh Hey Look! its 9 men What are they going to do?"
Katana Samurai: "Yeaaarrrrghhhhh!!!!"
Yari Samurai 2: "Run! Their Screams are too Frightening!"
Yari Samurai 1:"I Don't Care about that! What If They Have More Of These Monsters In That Castle!"
*Thus the enemy ran away by thinking that their opponent had more allies in the building with Frightening Screaming power.*
more of a realistic note. "What if there are more of them in the Buidling." Should help you ppl stop thinking of how unrealistic this is.
Shamefurr Dispray!
Wait u can win no survivors? Lol
+Gus Medina I the time run out or enemy flee without a general to recall them yes u can
Yes, you can, but it's extremely rare. He got lucky that the yari samurai fled before his last man died.
it's like 1 in 1 million chance

1:35 "The last soldier"
*cough*
Theres another one top right
That was the one we watched before - he died sooner than the other.
Grow up, kid.
Shas'O Swoll you could not do any better Tau
As you can see at 1:48 he dies
this is the most stupid thing about shogun 2 and atilla, full squads just fleeing, when they could win the fight. "Oh look we're fucking 20 against 3! We're winning! but... we gotta flee..."
+Norman Daniel I think the logic is: "sure, we'll eventually be able to beat them, but I REALLY DON'T WANT TO DIE, so someone else can take care of it.
I think it has to do with morale, maybe they've got scared of the bravery/audacy of those last soldiers.

lolol ashigaru are cannon fodder. Their only strength is their number and cheap cost.
+Israel Covey then you're doing it wrong lol
Israel Covey ashigaru are meant to hold the line and samuri as shock troops
"Guys, we killed them all!"
"Then flee like the mighty cowards we are!"
They were worried about samurai ghosts.
He dedicated his life till the end for honor and victory
btw the music timing is perfect at 0:25 it flares up right as the guy gets cut down and screams
Just as a shout out for those who don't know, they released a Blood and Gore DLC for this for 1.60, American. Really adds a mature feel and visceral change, it's pretty awesome.
what an epic fight RIP my friend.
Valiant warriors who are the idols of all Japanese men!
They were so terrified of the defenders that they thought thier very spirits would continue to fight. It was best to cut their losses and run.
bruh i still remember this 10 years dude :)

it's pretty weird that they would keep fleeing after no enemies are left.
Probably scared.
MenexGaming scared of being haunted by their ghosts? ;-)
They need to pee.
they were afraid oni's would kill them.........
soldiers: RUN THE CASTLE IS HAUNTED!!!
iseeicyicetea that their where more samuri
If I were you, I would rename that city to: The last samurai
This game is technical marvel. Truly impressive game and top of the line animations.
hardly a technical marvel, each unit can only attack one at a time.
it's because of honor! we don't double team WE FIGHT 1v1 TILL THERE ARE NONE!
With Shimazu Samurais you would have won the battle with 5 survivors
so if i want good samurais i should pick the Shimazu clan?
If you want good Katana Samurais you should pick Shimazu
***** Thank you!
Shimazu too over rated. They weren't key players in Japanese history during this time... They kept pretty quiet.
In terms of power, it probs went
Imagawa and Takeda then to Oda => Toyotomi (alliance) => Ieyasu and Date, Hojo, Uesugi and Mori stayed powerful
TheDuckSaysQwack Theirs samuraïs are the best like the Chosokabe bowman who are really really poverful.
A similair thing happened to me but it was a lot cooler. It was during a regular battle, only my general was left and the AI had 12 samurai. My general surprisingly didnt flee and fought them. Don't worry, Samurai warrior, The Last Samurai is dedicated to you!
one thing i like about total war is that you do get those awesome heroic scenes when you got a 1v5 or 5v15 going on and you just say "wow that guy is a boss"
Awesome unpredictable things like this is why shogun 2 is the best
Had a pretty badass one whereby my Daimyo was the last man standing, it was especially cool becasue he was a warrior monk.
Until the dawn they held on only 9 are left at the end. None alive none survive SHIROYAMAAA.
Courage,Tradition and honour. That's what makes them Samurai.
Sabayon: WRITE THAT DOWN RIGHT THAT DOWN

they are still seen fighting today

i never thaught i would see a victory of this fashion, u have impressed me alot
1:36 “last soldier” But wait, who’s that other guy fighting in the background.
He died before him so the last soldier is still last. He was the second last soldier.
The caption just badly timed

WOW... never seen that before. Victory even tho you have no more men THAT IS AMAZING

I've seen a LOT of these vids... But that win at the end.... AWESOME!!

The yari realize that the samurai already decided to haunt this place for thousand years. That's why they leave
Every Shogun Player wishes having Samurais like these
They heard the line about haunting the place for 10,000 years and said "nope"

I have that on as well, but i just cant seem to get the reflections right, oh well, you spend more time controlling your units then zooming in and watching them fight so i guess i just have to live with it.
There is. It's called the "Continue the Siege" option when you attack a city.
Once in Empire Total War, I had about 60 men left, and in square formation and held off 400 and won... it was amazing
you have to know what to attack and when to let them come to you. its real strategic, I get where you're coming from though. It took me some time to learn how to play this game.
@borschlab the video skips abit but he actually rewinded the clip since they die near enough the same time I'm guessing
