Another vote for not taking the linkage apart. I removed the top bolt from the shock, and then the bolt for the chip, switched it over and reassembled. Much quicker.
comes a bit late but: just let the air out the shock and remove the bolt of the chip^^ I just did it before I watched the video lol^^ *wrongorder but it was that easy-
I did this yesterday on my 2019 Stumpy 29er in 5 min. I did not even let air out of the shock. remove both bolts, pull shock out and flip the chip then re-install. It is almost as easy as the YT flip chip.
Clint, it sounds like there's a big shortcut, but thanks for doing this vid per the mfg instructions. While there may be a short way and a long way, what I learned was how meticulous one should be when wrenching around that carbon fiber--using cloths, torque stuff etc. You seem to take care--which is always a good reminder and lesson. Pedal on.
Wow! Talk about a heart surgery! 😐 I'm one of those who think flipping the chip needs to be an "easy" task. More like pushing a button. Kind of like on the Canyon Strive Enduro bike with its Shapeshifter link.
I mean its cool that Specialized has now added a flipchip to their bikes but it seems more complicated than Treks Mino Link or Rocky Mountain's Ride 9 suspension system
It really is. You can keep TWO spare tubes in there if you fold it tight. But one is fine. I keep a tube, 3 CO2 canisters, CO2 head, 2 Pedros levers, 4 spare chain links, and a mini chain breaker tool. I wrap all the metal stuff up in some kitchen drawer foam liners to keep it from slapping around the inside of the carbon frame.
My new SC 5010's flip chip is changeable in like 2 mins. I've changed it on trail twice. I'm surprised Specialized made it such a PITA to change. It's not hard, but having to fully remove the shock sucks, IMO.
Thanks Clint need to does this on my 29er ST Stumpy. I've been having a lot of pedal strikes lately. Hopefully it improves the turning in the tight single track (Florida rider here) as well.
1:05 There is a very thorough TH-cam video going around on how to flip the flip chip on the Specialized Stumpjumper by some guy named Clint Gibbs. Very informative!
Gawd the bike rides better up ! Now I do love it ! Oh and just put it on a stand, remove both shock bolts with your foot supporting rear wheel height (pro) flip chip and reassemble. And don't watch 6 min video on how to take the scenic route.
The specialized stump jumper the best trail bike ever I find that riding a 29er is better to control than a 27.5 I rode before 29er easy to handle on tight twisting trails
Any idea how this differs from the 2016 Stumpjumper? I’m swapping to a 6Fattie setup and need to raise the BB and there is only the single bolt inline with the shock, so I’m pretty sure the shock needs to come completely off. I’m pretty sure this is just like the 2018 Enduro where it’s not a flip, but a matter of putting the spacer on one side or the other of the link. Unfortunately, videos and instructions are few and far between for the 2016 .... thanks for this video though, it certainly helps!
Yes, as long as you get the same eye to eye measurement. The new stumpjumpers do not use a proprietary measurement so you should be able to find one that fits.
Just got the epic Evo expert and seems as the chip in LOW position. I ride Bull and Jake Mountain as well as Bearhoti loop. Would you leave it at low? I absolutely love the bike, have 4 rides on it and seriously considering selling my 2019 Hightower LT. I am noticing, that I have more pedal strikes.
I would leave it in the low position so you can be a little bit more carefree on the downhills. But if the pedal strikes are absolutely killing you then set it in high.
Not killing, guess it's just I'm used to the Hightower. The 2021 epic evo expert is freaking amazing, the slack head tube angle is what sold me. I had to upgrade the drive train to XX1, but worth every penny. Hope to ride with you soon.
Good day Clint! I just want to ask your expert opinion since you have been well knowledgeable about Specialized Bikes. I am currently running a 2019 Specialized Stumpjumper comp alloy, 27.5 in size small. I have really been considering on upgrading my rear shock from the stock DPS to either Fox Dpx2 or Dvo t3 topaz. But I noticed that both these shocks have vertically mounting holes from the top and bottom wherein in my Dps the bottom mounting hole is positioned horizontally. Do you know if there is a proprietary adapter to fit these shocks (Dpx2/Dvo t3 topaz) or if there is a specific Dpx2 or Dvo T3 Topaz that is designed for stumpjumpers only. Thank you Clint and would appreciate any input that you would be giving me. Ride safe and God bless you and your Family always! 😀
I have not heard of a proprietary adapter, but that does not mean one does not exist. You should probably call Fox directly to see if they make something like that. I've contacted them on many occasions with questions and they are very helpful. Sorry I could not be of further help.
I did it today. Only difference I see is the shock and mount seem to have more separation (very minute diff). It took me only 5 min. Released the air from the shock, used a small rag to protect frame, took off only rear bolt. Flip chip , retorque, air up and boom..done.
Whats up clint. I got the basic giant trance 2 2018 model and ride a few times a week. Unfortunately i bent my back rim and been wanting to go carbon wheels with a good hub. Any recommendations. ??
I have absolutely no idea how to Pm (using my s8) 😑😑😑 Like i said just have the aluminum giant trance but want a carbon wheel set. I ride central fl like santos, and Alfia.
You can put on a longer travel fork but I don't think you can change the linkage of the frame. I think it's designed around the specific travel. But I would check with a specialized dealer. They may have to call specialized directly. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
These specs of fork and rear shock are for 29er right? I have a 2019 stumpy comp alloy 27.5 and I am wondering if I could use a fox 36 at 160mm and maybe a dpx2 or float x2 rear shock if that is possible? Thanks! 😀
So Clint, I have the short travel version and have actually entered my first xc race. Would you recommend flipping the chip to the high setting? My trails are also tight with lots of turns and switchbacks
This could be a video about how to transform the ST version to the regular Stumpjumper. I think they both use the same frame with a different shock and shock extension length. Only think left to do: swap the forks.
Its so much easier on my Rallon R5. Just unscrew, take the chip out, flip it, put it back in and scew back. No need to take anything apart. This is way too complicated.
Clamp the bike by the frame rather than seat post. The top part of the “side arm” works well. My stand can be twisted so the clamp mouth is horizontal. I know it probably doesn’t have much affect on the carbon, but less stress on it for sure.
Air D don’t do this on a carbon frame. Ever. MTB seat posts with droppers are especially beefy as well. Even if you have a Carbon seat tube on a carbon road bike, the seat tube is the better option. Much cheaper to replace than the frame if you do happen to damage this.
Slack position, steeper head angle, wth does this mean? this is pretty complicated for a "simple feature change." Specialized marketing implies the "flip chip" is an facile change, even for this dude who seems to know everything he's talking about. He took 5 cut scenes just to remove the shock from the bike.."once you get it off the bike it's easy." By virtue of the frustration in trying this, I know I'll never even try this to my SJ. Not to mention putting it back for different styles of riding, back and forth. It seems unnecessarily onerous, they could have designed it to be easier.. I wonder how much of the $3,000 I paid extra for this feature on my bike...
Another vote for not taking the linkage apart. I removed the top bolt from the shock, and then the bolt for the chip, switched it over and reassembled. Much quicker.

You do have decent videos but I am most impressed that this video is not super long as usual. Good on you for using better editing techniques.
Over the past year or two I've been trying to short my videos. They used to be really long.
Wow! Talk about a heart surgery! 😐 I'm one of those who think flipping the chip needs to be an "easy" task. More like pushing a button. Kind of like on the Canyon Strive Enduro bike with its Shapeshifter link.

MTB Shredder he makes it waaaaaay harder than it should be. I did it in the carpark in 5 min. You don’t need to take the linkage off.
That SWAT is seriously handy.

"Flip" chip..... more like pain in the rear chip. Wow.
ThunderStruckCoach i was thinking the same have to take half a bike a part on my jeffsy u can do it on the trail under 2 min😂
Actually, it’s a 5 minute job at best. Did mine by just pulling the shock and flipping the chip. No need to removed that mount.
Wonder why the manual says take out the linkage, when you can just remove the shock to flip it?
1:05 There is a very thorough TH-cam video going around on how to flip the flip chip on the Specialized Stumpjumper by some guy named Clint Gibbs. Very informative!

I will need to defer to someone else on this one. I do not have any experience with that bike.
does this feature come on all the Stumpjumper models like the alloy version?
Pretty sure it comes on all the new models of the redesigned stumpjumper
how about the 2019 version
Great explanation video, thanks
Does the flip chip work if you were to replace the shock with a new one from a different brand, such as fox, ohlins, or dvo?
Yes, as long as you get the same eye to eye measurement. The new stumpjumpers do not use a proprietary measurement so you should be able to find one that fits.

does it effect wheelbase?? your help would help me alot
I don't think the wheelbase changes. Mainly bottom bracket height and head angle.

@@ClintGibbs Thanks a lot Clint! 😀
How do u know the difference between both settings ? I couldn't tell. Would like to see where mine sits.
It's hard to tell but the tip of the shock will be on the high or low line. It comes in the low setting.
I did it today. Only difference I see is the shock and mount seem to have more separation (very minute diff). It took me only 5 min. Released the air from the shock, used a small rag to protect frame, took off only rear bolt. Flip chip , retorque, air up and boom..done.
Hi how are you. I have 2015 specialized stomper so make some noise from the firt bolt did you lose wha do you think it it's?
Start by putting some grease on the threads if you haven't already. Also make sure you use a torque wrench to get the specs exact.
@@ClintGibbs ok it'snit any bearing to i have to replace?
Great video man, thank you!
I have a idea , ? Maybe you could install your 27.5 wheels on your giant trance on the new stumpjumper? That would be more fair review?!
It is not easier to remove the screw from the flip chip, empty the air from the shock, flip the chips, put the bolt back and add some air?
I may try that next. For the video I wanted to do it per the manufacturer's recommendation.
And if it works, I'll post a video!
That's what I was thinking just undo the bolt with the flip chip, and the shock and it should slide right out.
Good video 👍🏻💯

The Giant carbon rims are a very good value. If you were able to spend more the Stan's carbon rims are excellent with more compliance built in.
you switch from Giant to Specialized?
The Stumpy was a test bike that I own for a while. Replaced by the Niner RIP 9 RDO. Still have the giant Trance 29.
Hello, just curious why you got a size M frame. What is your height? Thx.
Just under 5'9"
How did it change the ride???
th-cam.com/video/khGTFJxME3g/w-d-xo.html
out of the factory its high or low?
Pretty sure it comes in the low position.
@@ClintGibbs thank you 👌
Cool! Thx Clint!
Nice job...
Clint can you tell me how i change my stumpjumper st in to a long travel? Appart from different suspensions of course.
You can put on a longer travel fork but I don't think you can change the linkage of the frame. I think it's designed around the specific travel. But I would check with a specialized dealer. They may have to call specialized directly. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Clint Gibbs allright, cool, thanks!
Clint change out the rear shock to fox dpx2 and front fork to fox 36 fit4 150 mm boost travel rear shock 210 by 50 mm

Hmmm. Didn't you just slacken the head angle?? It was on "high" when you started....
Clive Mitchell is saw the same thing you saw I don’t know what other ppl saw but it was clearly on high
It came in the low position. Hard to read the indicator in the video
No worries Clint. I have been looking with interest at the recent crop of long travel 29ers so hanging out for your review...
Canyon bikes make it so easy
Wow. Trek's Minolink is much easier. Just 2 screws.
Seems like it is unnecessarily fiddly to do this. On my YT Jeffsy I undo one bolt and flip the chip. Why make something so simple this complicated?
Don't choke the head on a torque wrench bro.
Offset bushing
then Trek comes with their Mino-Link and shows us how easy it CAN work........................
spezialized things
My Blur is so old there was no flip-chip in the shock. If you didn't like the set up you either sucked it up or went riding somewhere else. lol
you can buy a basiclly flip chip fron www.offsetbushings.com/ thats what im going to do on my 2018 stumpjumper
for the premium they put on their bikes they should have a better system
👍🏻
i prefere the ride nine system by rocky mountain way eazy more fast to do .. just saying
Its so much easier on my Rallon R5. Just unscrew, take the chip out, flip it, put it back in and scew back. No need to take anything apart. This is way too complicated.
LoL my 2020 model stumpjumper has a completely new type of flip chip.
Hopefully they've made it easier?
Why not just undo the bolt with the flip chip? 😂 no need to mess with linkage bolts
This video is per the manufacturer recommendation. I did a follow-up video to show the quick way:
th-cam.com/video/vLZ55Z-KByo/w-d-xo.html
Clamp the bike by the frame rather than seat post. The top part of the “side arm” works well. My stand can be twisted so the clamp mouth is horizontal.

Amazing NO Specialized Wording Decals !!!!!!!!!!
It's under the down tube
at least not a AD like the previous Specialized frames
Makes no sense to remove the linkage. Not necessary at all.
