The rod leash idea is brilliant. I am gonna upgrade my rod holders with them. Good thing about cheap kayaks is that they are so easily upgraded to what you want and it can be done cheaply.
Great video. I applaud the fact that you use nuts and bolts and nut just screws. This is more secure. Tip: Use heat shrink to cover your paracord knots, instead of tape.
My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!
Keep in mind zip ties break down in the sunlight, I would recommend replacing any ziptie exposed to sunlight at least once per year. Somebody already mentioned backing plates, another alternative is LARGE fender washers, available at hardware stores or big box lumberyard/home improvement stores.
Just bought my first fishing kayak. Pelican mustang 100x. Its more of a recreational kayak with a couple rod holders but I'll be working on just about all these mods immediately. Thanks for the vid!
$2 plastic flag pole mounts work great as rod holders.. bonus.. they have 2 positions you can use.. straight up and down to keep stuff out of way and angled position for trolling..
Bro, you have NO IDEA how much I needed to see this video!!! I'm making the swap from whitewater and surf kayaking to fishing from a kayak and this has been the best video for conversation ideas that I've seen! Thank You so much and keep up the excellent content! I'll be Rip'n Lips from a kayak in no time!
I have a pretty similar kayak to this, but came with the pole holders. It only ways 40 lbs and I can carry through the woods to my favorite spot. Liked and subscribed! Ill have to try some of these ideas with mine and keep modding!
Common Stainless d-ring tie downs have the same spacing as the plastic deck eye fittings holding the original handles. I replaced mine, and have hauled up and down an 8 ft bank with no problems using them to drag it by.
I came across this as I was looking for some mod ideas to make our little dolphins a little more "fun", versatile, lake machines...as the broke mom, I found this quite sensible to do to save us from wanting something else that wont fit on my Aveo roof. Also appreciate the use of washers/rubber gaskets as the marine silicone is not budget friendly. lovin it, thanks for posting and giving me some confidence to drill into a perfectly good boat skin...eek!...lol. I got us those little dock rods instead of long rods because they fit inside the rig for car travel. That’s awesome glad the video helped build some confidence and gave you some ideas. From personal experience some of these cheaper kayaks are just as good as the expensive kayaks, they get you on the water to have a little fun maybe you can catch some fish. Good luck with your modification ideas. And thanks for watching.
Simply Rise thanks it doesn’t have to be complicated however folks can take this tutorial and use it as examples for what they want to do to their yaks. Thanks for watching.
@@FishingPOV 6:24 Wow. .just gave me another idea. Who needs a tent??? Hahaha lol. I bet a few people freak out with your drilling and sawing demo lol. Thank you again bro. Awesome.
Simply Rise yeah people have definitely freaked out over the holes, but I’ve not got any water in the holes I drilled but I get a bunch through the cockpit from the paddle LOL thanks again for watching.
It would be great if you did/do a follow up video on the water demonstrating how each of the additions to the kayak work/function or benefit the fisherman.Especially the anchor trolley.
Rick Barraza sorry I’ve had a lot of changes in my life over the last couple years and finding time to make videos had been tough. The anchor trolley is all based on current and wind. Being able to anchor at either end of the boat helps position yourself for casting. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.
I hear you. As we get older time seems to fly. I’ll search for “kayak anchor trolley” vids out there. I’ve already purchased and installed the rod holders from Yakattack just like yours on my old blue Tarpon 120. The thing is like 16 years old lol. Mine came out looking just like yours, angled to the outside of the craft. Thanks for the reply!
Used the rod holders from my Future Beach 126 to make a trolling motor mount. I use a Newport Vessels 46lb. Makes the bigger lakes a breeze. With the way I made it the rod holders are still usable.
i added a short piece of bungee on the pad eyes front and back, with stainless pulleys from home depot (cheap and awesome) rather than run anchor chord thru the pad eyes. it acts as a shock absorber for choppy conditions and puts less stress on the pad eyes. also, i use stainless steel pad eyes from Austin kayak and canoe ( they also have pulleys and tons of great accessories) because i've snapped several nylon ones. do it right, do it once!
After watching you use electrical tape on your paracord knots it got me wondering if some heat shrink sleeve material might work for this application. Great video!
Brilliant..thank you, for all your secrets and tips... going to try to do these to our yaks ❤️🇬🇧 to everyone else who thinks they know better and telling him how to do it different, get your on vlog up and show your own show 😂
Very helpful video. I bought a Future Beach Mariner which is basically the same exact boat except with a small covered storage space on the bow. I will be using your ideas on mine for sure. Thanks
Looks like you had fun and sure added more to the adventure. I would invest in the pop rivets they do a great job and very reasonable. I always changing up stuff on my Kayak and that is part of the fun. Fish on.
Great clear vid... You solved one of my problems as I have a converted sit on top Kayak that is 13.5 ft and the anchor pulley cord sages or rides up on top .. your idea to have two that meet in the middle is sweet... will be modifying my boat asap to that .. Thanks
nice job, I have the same kayak from Menards and it's actually really decent for the the price. I did the same thing to mine and also added some scotty tracks to the sides. Mine was 149 after rebate. rear flush mount holders were 10 bucks on amazon for two.
Thank you, I've been happy with it and the mods. I just recently upgraded to a Ascend 12T so I can stand and fish, but still use this one for the small rivers and ponds. Mine also was 149 after rebate.
I found that your DIY upgrades were extremely thoughtful. I find that a thoughtful and capable "end user", person can often accomplish for dollars, that which high paid engineers sometimes obtain for much more. Power on!
Thank you for this! I'm thinking about grabbing one of these (there are like 4 left in the entire greater Chicagoland area) and want to make it more of a fishing yak.
I wish I were brave enough to start drilling and sawing into my kayak so I could do some cool mods. Great video! I did have to replace some eyelets on my kayak. I used marine sealant from our local Ace Hardware on the eyelets on the inside of my yak. Yeah, it's a sit-in and invasive water in the cockpit is unavoidable, but, I felt better inside by covering the bolts w/ marine sealant. Guess I'm OCD like that! LOL
Instead of using electrical tape on the anchor trolley knot ends... snip the paracord back so there is about a 1/4 inch of tag end left. Use a lighter to melt the tag end back and while it's molten use the rounded shaft of a screwdriver or something similar to drive the molten paracord into the last knot. Very secure way to lock in that last knot by because the end melts and becomes one with the knot.
your trolly system will chew into your nylon pad eyes. use stainless steel pad eyes. or use little block and tackle or snatch blocks(aka a pully system)
That IS NOT a trolley system by any form of the definition. A trolley system is one continuous section of rope to move the anchor the full length of the boat and pulleys should be on each end. I'm not surprised though, since they opted for phone cord when three rod leashes can be had for $10.
For anybody doing this, I highly recommend using either maring grade silicon or even better a marine grade adhesive sealant like Marine goop (marine goop actually bonds to the polystyrene unlike silicon)
Just for anyone that reads this comment, I’ve had this kayak for years and those rubber washers I used to seal the holes are still going strong. The only place I get water in is through the hole for the cockpit where I sit. But if you feel more comfortable using using silicone, you do you. Thanks for watching.
Watch scraping flesh off on the screws. Put some gas line or vacuum line on the exposed thread. Not sure if they are exposed, but that would suck to slice an arm or leg, specially if wet.
Thanks for watching I honestly never really thought I’d put the video on TH-cam at the time I made it LOL so I didn’t really think it through much. However I’m still using this yak today with the same set up and I’ve had good luck with using the anchor trolley system.
I hope that you put on the rod holders some good marine quality sealant. Because if you didn't you may want to stow away a bilge pump. Because water gets in anywhere it can with or without your help. And not using sealant is helping it out a lot.
Lough Sun I don’t deny sealant helps but I’ve been running these kayaks the same way for over five years and I haven’t had a problem with water. But if it make folks feel more secure then they should use sealant for sure. Thanks for the advice and watching.
I bought a double from walmart, NO handles, except the t handles. bought handles from amazon and now my double has 4 handles........ HIGHLY recomended, I added water proof silicone to the holes and between the handle and yak as well.
what exactly does the anchor trolley system used for? i understand how to use it based on your explanation but im new to this and dont know what its used for lol. i just bought a equinox 10.4 from costco, exact same kayak. thanks man, great vid and ideas!
First off, I appreciate your very informative video. Question: Should you use some silicone caulk to seal out water under the rod holders? Seems like water could get between the kayak deck and rod holder.
I’ve never had an issue with water in that spot, if it was a sit on top I would use silicone but since it’s a sit in and the most water I take on is from the big open space where the seats at, it’s not a worry of mine. Thanks for watching.
The side holes, yeah, probably best to use some kind of sealant. The ones on top, the only time it would matter is if drilling in to a location that has no access hatch. You also won't get much water, if any, in a regular flatwater lake type situation anyway.
Would it have been more wise to install the rod holders in the rear differently ? It looks like turning them more inward (so they parallel the kayak)would make for a slimmer profile. That would make it easier to dock, and easier to navigate narrow passages.
Smokeydabee Charles Coleman you are correct it was a mistake during making the video and was corrected later. And a new video was made to show the correct way to install them. Thanks for watching.
Have you converted a regular kayak to a pedal kayak before? It it possible? I have a tandem alliance made by pelican and a Aruba 10 I was waiting to possibly do any ideas on how to do it?
i get the handles & rod holders. but what is the string on the side of the boat do/for ? for those of you that say seal the holes. you will get more water in the boat, from water dripping off the paddle , then all the screw holes. didn't see any below water line. what about the big hole your sitting in ? ... just sayin' :-)
1Reddogroad the string on the side is a anchor trolley system. Helps anchor the boat from front or back to adjust to the wind. And you are correct about the water and paddle thanks for watching.
Nice video I have a cheaper kyak to its a pelican odessey 100x premium its ok it has rod holders already and storage but I am gonna put a paddle holder so when im fishing it doesn’t go in the water
Great video!! But if I’m doing this to a sit on top Kayak what screw in system or screws would you use since you won’t be able to get inside to screw down Nuts-?
Also put those pieces in a baggie and throw one of those (crack head lighters) lol little torch lighters and you can make repairs from holes and cracks on your kak anytime.
Heat shrink wire wrapping is pretty cheap, and will last longer than electrical tape. Also, those deck eyes don't hold up to paraccord friction. A few cheap pulleys will extend the life of the whole system.
I was thinking of doing similar to my sit on top. Did screws hold up, I planned to silicone them to deck and use expanding inserts to hold screw in at minimum... Any update would be cool...?
movaughn20 I’ve been running this yak for 5ish years now and no leaks. Everything has held up except the peracord I’ve had to replace a couple times but that’s it. Good luck and thanks for watching.
I have a good question. My kayak doesn't have knee pads along the rim that goes around the seat area so was curious what people use to make them comfortable, pipe insulators or possibly pool noodles cause I can't find them for mine online so gonna have to compromise a little and use my imagination
The rod leash idea is brilliant. I am gonna upgrade my rod holders with them.
Good thing about cheap kayaks is that they are so easily upgraded to what you want and it can be done cheaply.

Many of the kits are set up without backing plates.
I used rubber washers on my bolts

Roger Diotte thanks for watching and good luck.
cool idea. i recommend heat shrink instead of tape to go around the knots.

No, used a rubber washer, been using the yak for 5 years or so and never had a single leak.
they didn't read your vlog.

Have you converted a regular kayak to a pedal kayak before? It it possible? I have a tandem alliance made by pelican and a Aruba 10 I was waiting to possibly do any ideas on how to do it?
I wouldn’t even know where to begin with that sorry I couldn’t help.
i get the handles & rod holders. but what is the string on the side of the boat do/for ?
for those of you that say seal the holes. you will get more water in the boat, from water
dripping off the paddle , then all the screw holes. didn't see any below water line. what
about the big hole your sitting in ? ... just sayin' :-)
1Reddogroad the string on the side is a anchor trolley system. Helps anchor the boat from front or back to adjust to the wind. And you are correct about the water and paddle thanks for watching.
Appreciate this video. Thx. The use of the good ol' fashioned screwdriver cracks me up though. :D
Mike Finch LOL thanks
Nice video I have a cheaper kyak to its a pelican odessey 100x premium its ok it has rod holders already and storage but I am gonna put a paddle holder so when im fishing it doesn’t go in the water
01silver auto nice I know a lot of folks that have that yak and love it. Thanks for watching and good luck with any mods you do.
Great video!! But if I’m doing this to a sit on top Kayak what screw in system or screws would you use since you won’t be able to get inside to screw down Nuts-?
I would probably use rivets and silicone. Good luck
for the half hitch knots, would heat shrink tubing work for keeping them from undoing themselves?
Wow this video has 22000 views congrats good diy video...always good to see ur videos
+Bass Hole very good idea can't wait to see it
Also put those pieces in a baggie and throw one of those (crack head lighters) lol little torch lighters and you can make repairs from holes and cracks on your kak anytime.
D Bentley good advice thanks for watching
Heat shrink wire wrapping is pretty cheap, and will last longer than electrical tape. Also, those deck eyes don't hold up to paraccord friction. A few cheap pulleys will extend the life of the whole system.
What do you do with the anchor rope? A big wet tangle inside the kayak??
I try to keep it as neat as I can
I added all these kids to my intex explorer k2 and then I sank. What did I do wrong?
Love cheap mods !
Trolls system gave me another mod idea! I've already added cleats, deck eyes AND recessed shark eye navy lights to my eagle run 12. Nice work man!
*trolley
Spellcheck killing me without my reading glasses! 😂 *navigation lights UGH! Again, nice work
Nice video and nice mods. Keep 'em coming.
Thanks! That is a very good video, I will be doing that.
Dil Lee you’re welcome thanks for watching
What size drill hole did you use? Great video...
Honestly I don’t remember I’m sorry thanks for watching.
These hollow body kayaks are great for diy modifications
They sure are. Thanks for watching.
I have a good question. My kayak doesn't have knee pads along the rim that goes around the seat area so was curious what people use to make them comfortable, pipe insulators or possibly pool noodles cause I can't find them for mine online so gonna have to compromise a little and use my imagination
I’d try the pool noodles they are probably cheaper most dollar stores have them. Thanks for watching.
@@FishingPOV they work great
@@dentondunn4346 thanks for the update.
Good point Bass hole . I'm most likely going to buy a used sit on Ascend from EBay !
Bryan Bree I just got an Ascend 12T I'm very happy with it.
Is there a video showing how to use the trolley system with anchor
Joseph Parsons this is the closest video I have on that, thanks for watching.

Is there a way to put a trolling motor on one of those kayaks
I’m sure there is but I’ve never attempted it. Good luck and thanks for watching.
