      @@zecxie5119 I'm not a gamer but I can see a need for one board with custom switches depending on how heavy, light or fast a player wants to be with certain keys. For example, if it's a key hit with the forefinger, it could be one that needs more psi, whereas the puny pinky finger might be better with a key that requires less downforce. Keys that are used most often might have a quieter action, etc.

The only problem is that when you set it up macOS will detect that it is a Windows keyboard and have Windows and Cmd, and alt as Option, however you can change this in System Prefrences by going to "Special Keys..." in the keyboard section and swapping Option and Command around. Even though cherry mx switches are the most popular switches in prebuilt keyboards they aren't even close to being the best. Kailh box jades, pinks or whites for example are *a lot* more satisfying to type on than blues because they make a sharp, crisp sound instead of a rattly one, tangerines or alpacas are nicer to use because they are a lot more smooth that cherry mx reds, hako trues or let's say tealios are better than browns because they are less scratchy and more tactile. Also horrible rattly stabilizers aren't a problem on custom keyboards..
    Oh and also _topre_, those are arguably the best switches for typing in existence but I left them out because they're expensive as shit.

    • @PatriceSmith

      Kailh, Gateron Idk they are even cheaper than Cherry. Nowadays you don't have to spend too much to make yourself a custom built keyboard anymore since there are plenty of fairly affordable options. Yet for the price of MX switches you usually can get like top of the line enthusiast switches too.

    • @JimIBobIJones
      @JimIBobIJones 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Feel" is subjective, and Cherry have definitely lost the "enthusiast" crowd by failing to manufacture as many varieties as the competition, but nothing gets close in terms of engineering quality.
      Kailh have terrible manufacturing tolerances, Gateron are a bit better but nowhere near Cherry's standards.

    • @kangalow
      @kangalow 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JimIBobIJones I think that’s not quite true, tangerines and alpacas as mentioned by OP are infinitely better than MX Reds, and something like Akko Blue Oceans are much better than MX Browns. Blues are… well they’re blues. Cherry does make high quality switches in terms of engineering, but it’s not fair to say nothing else comes close, because almost anything else does. Also cherry has a lot of variety, specifically with stuff like their Silver and Black switches.

    For anyone who used both brown and blue, brown ones would be more preferable for most of them. If one starts their mechanical keyboard journey with the blue, as long as one doesn't switch to the brown, the blue is good enough. However, if one starts with the brown one, then switches to the blue, they will find the blue is "too heavy." I started with the blue switch, then changed to brown. When I got to used the brown, the blue switches make me feel a little harder to press.

But these silver speeds I am using right now are very fast but the only issue is that they're way 2 loud. When I type its probably louder then the blue switches. For gaming they are okay but for typing too loud.

    Good video, but I think the problem with these sound test videos is that people are using microphones that pick up best in the mid-range (naturally) for vocals, so they don't give a good comparison of the sound, where the real difference falls more at the high range. The browns and blues almost sound the same.

    I used a second-generation IBM Model-M (one of my universities had *REALLY*-OLD computers in the computer-lab inside the library (the computer-lab in the library was a separate-room from the room that had all the books & study-desks, by the way)). (Yeah I know: lucky me :-) ). (It was typing-heaven to a person-who-types-without-looking-down-at-the-keyboard).
    Unfortunately when the university had a "give-away all the old equipment"-day those keyboards were the FIRST to disappear (even though I arrived there EXTRA-early, WAYYY-before they opened-the-room where all the old stuff [they were giving[-]away] was).

    Great video. I'm going to get a Blue mechanical key switches. I started out with computers a long time ago, on an Atari 8bit, the 130XE. One nice feature the Atari had over Commodore was that pressing a key sent an actual audio signal of a loud click. I would turn the volume up really loud, then type away... even programming in BASIC, or Word Processing, it sounded like an arcade game with firecrackers going off.

    I've got a Rosewill keyboard with blue switches. I've seen a few people manage to get the muscle memory to only hit the actuation point where you get the initial tactile response and manage to up their typing speed by a dozen WPM or more. I've done PC gaming with it and I love it, probably better switches in the lineup for intense gaming but I really enjoy these for typing. Ten million times better than the mush of a membrane keyboard. I've noticed my typing output is far slower on a membrane keyboard.

    I'm planning to buy a 60% keyboard to use as my daily driver and also as a portable keyboard for travel, I'm more inclined to buy the blue switches because I will be spending 80% of my work time at home anyway, but the loud noise when I do go outside for work makes me hesitant to buy it, I am very conscious with noise especially outside. I'm just looking for an in-between, but I am still considering buying one or the other.

    Carp have apparently tunnelled into my wrists, so I need something fairly light.
    Have used blue switch in the past, and liked it, but wondered if brown might be lighter (and quieter).
    Helpful vid, although would've been nice to hear more switch less desk drumming (saying that as a key smashing desk hammerer!)

    • @criznash
      @criznash 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      IMO brown with o-rings are great. If you have carpal tunnel (or other repetitive stress injury related to your keyboard) you might be helped more by an ergonomic layout than changing switches. Either way, your best bet is to consult a doctor that specializes in these things.

    I bought a keybaord with blue switches, and I think maybe it's a little on the loud side and should have gone brown, even though I love the way it feels. Watching this video, it seems that the brown isn't a whole lot quieter.

    • @ahndeux
      @ahndeux ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, the video is not correct because its too sensitive. Brown is a lot quieter and feels much better. You can also add an o-ring to help dampen it more. I'm glad I went to a store to test out keyboards before I got my keyboard. The clicky sounds of the blue drove me nuts. I can image how its much worse for others around me if I was using that keyboard. I ended up with the Logitech G710+ a while back because it was one of the few that had the brown keys along with an o-ring. Its also lighter to press so you don't get as worn out after an 8 hour day at work typing on a keyboard or at home.
