Ok. I understand Diggle's choice of giving it up and choosing his family, and I applaud him for that. What I don't get is why do this whole storyline at all? Why keep bringing Diggle back for small guests appearances on what's left of the arrowverse and keep teasing the idea of him becoming Green Lantern if he's not even going to do it? I love Diggle, but this story just feels like a waste of time.
For fan service, Everyone knew that he was inspired by John Stewart Green Lantern, CW could not use John Stewart as they could not get the TV rights to any of the Green Lantern characters or IP, The first idea for Arrow was to do a take on the Green Arrow/Green Lantern comics series just with John instead of Hal for diversity. Because they could not get Stewart they created Diggle based off him but DC had to step in and say that the character was OK as long as they do not tread into GL. this has been said a few time in the Cons. The "Diggle GL" arc is just CW in away giving back to the original fans and John Stewart the character. Oviously it's the best they can do to explain in story why John is not a "Green Lantern" as he was never going to be one on screen.
The CW really intended to make him become the Green Lantern. However, Warner's spin-off and merger with Discovery changed all plans: former planned shows are shut down or halted, most CW shows were cancelled, Riverdale is having a final season, and for some reason Flash was the only show not getting the chop. So that's why things ended up like that all of a sudden
The reason Diggle chose not to take the ring is because the higher ups at CW told him that they weren't going to give him a green lantern spin off show

… One time playing devil’s advocate; in this moment he had the equivalent experience of watching someone throw away something they were freely offered, when he would have rather taken the “responsibility” if given the chance. Like, sure, we have all this context that Thawne has come too far to actually _become_ that sort of good character (even when he successfully took over Flash’s very life via timeline shenanigans, he specifically did so in a way to needle at Flash), but purely from an emotional standpoint, he saw someone inches away from taking a golden opportunity and saw them chuck it in the river, when he knows they would have done good with it and been good _at_ it, regardless of his own place in that equation. And when he points that out to them, they have the gall to just go “better me than you.” Of _course_ he’s pissed and goes to insults, his whole _thing_ amounts to “better me than you.”

The irony is that Thawne would never be offered this chance. Only a handful of people across time and space ever are. And Diggle is now one of those people. It's one of those things where it truly is just as much an honor to be nominated as it is to win. And the fact he rejected it would be respected by those that accepted.

It's almost 3am and I thought, "huh, it's been two years since they teased Diggle as GL, I wonder what ever happened with that?" And they barely wrapped it up last night - and he never became Green Lantern? What the hell is the CW even DOING?! 😂

Cw didn't expect HBO Max to be a thing and didn't expect to have new owners. Warner only owns 25% of CW with Paramount. Even diggles Justice U show hasn't been picked up. Gotham Knights is the only new show next year because they signed a contract before the merger. Stargirl and Superman and Lois will probably be moved to HBO Max.
He says no, but that just makes the ring want him more. Edit: Wait. That _thing_ isn't acting like a typical Lantern Ring. Thawne mentions a "Source Wall" and breaking through it, so it _can't_ be a simple Green Ring. Green Rings dont do that at all. Isn't the Source Wall some sort of cosmic barrier surrounding the DC multiverse? This _thing_ could be some sort of key to access whatever is on the other side, and that would make it a _very_ important item, because penetrating the Source Wall is nigh impossible.
It’s a very powerful scene, but that’s not how the Green Lantern ring works! They try to make it sound like a Symbiote. Like it’s gonna take over his life… I can’t lol. But incredible scene and great directing, 10/10 for this scene
I mean he is right about if he accepts it. He could travel the universe, save so many lives, but what will guarantee that he can come back to Earth? To his family? To be normal without any cosmic responsibility (cuz if he knows theres a threat out there and he had that ring, he'd leave every time without a second thought)
Actually there is absolutely nothing that says the Ring couldn't do everything in this scene. It is just a device created by the Guardians. Earth is a young species. They could easily adjust the Ring's function to show the Pros and Cons of accepting the Ring. With the Ring comes a great responsibility. The Lanterns are basically interstellar cops. To fill that role you would want to select the best "men" you could. But at the end of the day they will have to want to do the job. With that much power there job would need to come first. Though, this definitely doesn't fit the Hal Jordan story.
Somehow I feel that Oliver is smiling right now, John. While it takes great strength to wield power, it takes greater strength to let that power return. Well I regret not seeing the green lantern on TV, John Diggle remains one of the strongest heroes on Earth-Prime by leaning into what makes him stand out: His humanity. Excellent performance and great chemistry between Ramsey and Cavanaugh. The writing really set up a strong parallel between the power mad Reverse-Flash and the normal Eobard Thawne.
Especially because during the Arrow TV Show John Diggle actually struggled quite a bit with the fact that he didn't have super powers and at times was jealous of the fact that Oliver got to be the Green Arrow. It wasn't until he finally dealt with his younger Brother's sins/death that his character truly stepped into the mentor role and he become a family Man.
Isn't it ironic that the same sheer willpower that he uses to refuse the ring is exactly what would've made him a great Green Lantern And soon enough I shall receive a blue one because with Superman & Lois' season finale having Diggle I still have some hope, that this exactly the trick
It’s like all those series where a power source or weapon needs to choose it’s wielder. Usually those who crave the power and actively seek it are the least suitable for it. There have been many who wanted green lantern rings and were willing to kill to get them, ignoring the responsibility that came with them and what they were created for. Just power obsessed and not seeing that its a power in service of others

They are similar enough to lanterns that having them be the next fate of Diggle might actually be appropriate for something cosmic. The character he is based on John Stewart even joined them in the comics.
i agree Diggle has always put family first and he thought of Olly as family too but Olly got that about him as well. him not choosing to he a Lantern fits right into who he is as a character. i do wonder if that is the end of his spin off that's been in development hell for fucking ever. we need more Diggle on The flash along with his kids and his lovely wife. i want to see what happens next with him

Yeah nah the cube is definitely something bad and Thawne knew it. Why would the Dark Monitor Mandrakk have anything to do with the Green Lantern Corps? If anything this was an evil version of a Green Lantern ring similar to the Ring of Volthoom.

Okay, I know I know I know this scene was really disappointing after years of waiting and buildup, but can we please appreciate David's acting in this scene? I mean he really gives it his all here and I was so moved by his performance that when the scene ended I wasn't angry that John Diggle didn't become Green Lantern. And that's not easy to do considering the scene made the whole story a waste of time. I got to give him props for that.
You know, if we'd never seen Digle/John Stewart again after picking up the green glowy thing at the end of arrow it would have been a better end to this storyline than the multi-year-long anti-climax that this became... just poor writing.

The ring tested him and he chose responsibilities over power. Making him worthy to wield the ring as it's chosen master. At least in the comic book but we will see how or if they follow the comic book. It's fun flash and green arrow did the same thing as diggle at the beginning of their great journey. Think about why would they add all this side story for diggle for nothing. Everything that has happened in this show can be found in the comic books.

I would have loved to see Diggle as a full-fledged Green Lantern (and honestly still haven't completely ruled out a cameo appearance), but it does make sense in character for him to have made the decision he did, so I can begrudgingly respect it. This is independent of the behind the scenes stuff mentioned by other commenters, because you can still have those factors and tell a bad story; this show at least got the character right
I love how Diggle is here. If this were not too long after he met Barry, he'd be freaking out, yet here, he talks to him casually like he's not the only Superpowered person he met.
Look at it this way: John Diggle is not John Stewart. Not on Earth-Prime. His character development from Arrow, including his divorce and remarriage - his second chance to be who HE IS on THIS Earth as a good devoted father and husband, would be selfishly thrown in the trash if this 'fated destiny' that came out of nowhere and interupted his life was accepted. This arc was showing that even if fans wanted him to be the Green Lantern, what would that cost him if he can't return to Earth, at least for years at the very least. As cheesy as it sounds, the only ring he needs and deserves on Earth-Prime is his wedding ring.
I hope they bring this back for the next (and probably final) crossover. I don't need a Green Lantern show, I just need Diggle flying into space and saying he would pay visits on weekends or something like that. I mean, if he protects Earth's sector, there is no reason why he wouldn't be able to live on Earth. Or he could be thrown into Superman & Lois, I really don't care, I just want him to wear that ring.

Still, the fact that he gave up the chance to have such a mighty power, with his will to become a father who will protect his family, means that he has the will to be chosen by the green power ring. In a way, I think Diggle's choice was the result of a test proposed by Ling. Whether to accept the green of will or reject it to one's own will. So, in effect, Diggle believes that one day, once again, Ring may offer him a choice.

Well yes and no. The Bleed is the membrane of DC, the very first thing created within the mind of the perfect Overvoid. It’s contradictions and complexities led to the ideas of plot, of story, development, characters, conflict, the concept of fiction, which is imperfect. The Overvoid created the Angels and the Hands to create the two main Multiverses, DC Canon Multiverse and the Vertigo Multiverse, the latter being famous for the events containing Lucifer’s adventures. The Bleed is essentially the membrane that is in between all dimensions, realities, universes, and stories of DC. Mandrakk parts of the Bleed as he was corrupted by the contradictions, believing it should no longer exist. My guess is that this reference to “drinking the Bleed” means that Diggle needs to drink of the potential to make him the next Green Lantern. And it’s not the entire Bleed. It’s only a very small portion, incredibly small, insignificantly small, but enough to give Diggle his new place within the fiction. How Thawne knows any of that is beyond me. I can see the Bleed and the Source Wall, and that’s a stretch. But Mandrakk? That must have been one terrifying experience.
The fact that he referenced mandrakk and the source wall shows how vast his knowledge of the DC cosmology is I bet he knows other high dimensional beings as well like myxspytlk and stuff
Thawne could easily be one of the most motivational good guys / heroes (in the end; in LOT, he kinda was) . He's definitely the most motivational person in all of Arrowverse...
I mean character wise, this was a great scene. Seeing the responsibility he has to take for being a Green Lantern, I respect the choice he made if it meant not distancing himself from family. But let's be frank, they can just make him still be Green Lantern and be a family man. Can someone confirm if any Green Lantern in the comics at least has an active family dynamic and prove Green Lanterns can have those relationships?
In the strictest sense, none of the Lanterns are really like that. The closest thing you could argue for is Hal, but he's not looking after his own wife and child, he looks after his niece and nephew and his brother, and that's only when he manages to get some time back on Earth. Guy Gardner doesn't have a wife, but had an on-again-off-again relationship with Ice and literally ran away from his family because they were abusive. As far as I know there's really nothing like that with John, though I think he has a sister. Kyle Rayner has a litany of different relationships, but never starts a family (his own girlfriend being murdered is literally what invented the term "fridging a character"). Alan Scott, the OG Green Lantern (his powers don't come from an Oan Power Ring, they come from some mystical space rock called the Starheart), has a son and daughter (Obsidian and Jade), but again, his powers are not from a Green Lantern Power Ring, so he's not a Green Lantern as we know them now, i.e. intergalactic super cops.

Everyone’s over here saying lanterns don’t do relationships cus there space cops… these are the people forgetting that lanterns just have to patrol there individual space sectors ( usually a little bit larger than a solar system) most lanterns who aren’t main characters are just chilling at home with their families. Hell sometimes we’ve even seen in side stories that lanterns have been able to pass the ring onto their kids just fine

The cube wouldn't have even been a way out for him if it did contain a Green Lantern ring since John wouldn't let him out. This is not setting up Green Lantern, this is something much bigger. Bleed Mandrake, Source Wall, transmutable technology, these all are concepts more related to a New Gods storyline. There was a movie that was cancelled about New Gods, Justice U could pick it up. Now the only way Diggle would want that box back is if something happened to his family or they were taken to another dimension. We know WB/DC would not have allowed a full Green Lantern show on the CW (they are already working on one for HBO max). So this would the best option. We could see a Green Lantern Diggle at some point but that's it.
They're showing a green lantern ring but it's displaying the characteristics of an orange ring, displaying power that could be gotten. Green lantern rings are a call to service not power. I hope they get that right in the HBO show

This is more than likely not a Green Lantern ring at all if Thawne is right. Mandrakk is the Dark Monitor, a vampiric being that wants to consume the Multiverse, and The Bleed is another plane of existence in which he feeds on and uses to his advantage. Diggle was right not to accept what was in the box, it was probably some sort of forged ring that would've ended up doing more harm than good and causing another Crisis situation. That being said though, Mandrakk will probably be the villain for Superman & Lois season 3.
They just wanted to throw Green lanterns name around. Since crisis on infinite earths they’ve been teasing green lantern but they never had intentions on doing a show
The only reason Diggle said no was because the writers realised he was never gonna get his own "Green Lantern" show. And the flash series doesn't have the budget to incorporate Green Lantern into their show, without it looking absolutely terrible. The Arrow writers left it open for Diggle to become GL because their show was ending and they didn't have to think of the consequences of actually leaving it like that. The Flash writers had to tidy up that storyline if they want the actor Diggle to be a recurring character on the show. So if anyone was actually wondering why Diggle said no, its because they don't have the budget for that character and he's never gonna get his own show.
There's Good Ways to do Special Effects with a Lower Budget. Get or buy or make Green Coloured Glass Items and add Little CGI to them. Green Lantern summoning Item could be Green Glass. We can even have Deeper from the Flash being a Villain for Green Lantern. Seems like the Writers know they themselves aren't smart enough to make any more TV Shows
This Eddie thawne knows it's a power ring oh, why else would Eddie thong get so upset after the ring disappears and says that it was one of the only ways out of the cell? This confirms it that it's been a powering the entire time
I will always like Cavanagh's Thawne. So much rage and frustration and pride. But when he gets it, you can see that he does. He didn't even try interrupt Diggle. Almost like he acknowledged the decision in the end.
Anyone else worried about Thawne said. "Break through the Source Wall." Source Wall - as in the wall between the multiverses/place where the Anti-Life Equation can be found. Thawne probably knows about the multiverse. Does he know about the Anti-Life equation?
Imagine when Ezra Miller's creates Flashpoint (he's fired now). And it creates a new Justice League lineup. This is my pick The Batman (Robert Pattinson but in a timeline where we have Nightwing), Superman (Henry Cavill if he's still in it), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Mamoa), The Flash (Grant Gustin or another actor) he can be Wally West or Barry Allen, Green Lantern (Diggle of course). The main plot can be Legion of Doom and it enters in the Darkseid saga

David Ramsey's acting skill has come a long way over the years. He has always been one of the best on the Arrow show, and he just kept getting better.

Edit: Wait. That _thing_ isn't acting like a typical Lantern Ring. Thawne mentions a "Source Wall" and breaking through it, so it _can't_ be a simple Green Ring. Green Rings dont do that at all. Isn't the Source Wall some sort of cosmic barrier surrounding the DC multiverse? This _thing_ could be some sort of key to access whatever is on the other side, and that would make it a _very_ important item, because penetrating the Source Wall is nigh impossible.

To be normal without any cosmic responsibility (cuz if he knows theres a threat out there and he had that ring, he'd leave every time without a second thought)
Actually there is absolutely nothing that says the Ring couldn't do everything in this scene. It is just a device created by the Guardians. Earth is a young species. They could easily adjust the Ring's function to show the Pros and Cons of accepting the Ring. With the Ring comes a great responsibility.
The Lanterns are basically interstellar cops. To fill that role you would want to select the best "men" you could. But at the end of the day they will have to want to do the job. With that much power there job would need to come first.
Though, this definitely doesn't fit the Hal Jordan story.

Somehow I feel that Oliver is smiling right now, John. While it takes great strength to wield power, it takes greater strength to let that power return. Well I regret not seeing the green lantern on TV, John Diggle remains one of the strongest heroes on Earth-Prime by leaning into what makes him stand out: His humanity. Excellent performance and great chemistry between Ramsey and Cavanaugh. The writing really set up a strong parallel between the power mad Reverse-Flash and the normal Eobard Thawne.
Especially because during the Arrow TV Show John Diggle actually struggled quite a bit with the fact that he didn't have super powers and at times was jealous of the fact that Oliver got to be the Green Arrow. It wasn't until he finally dealt with his younger Brother's sins/death that his character truly stepped into the mentor role and he become a family Man.
After this weeks Flash episode, this has comment aged beautifully!
Isn't it ironic that the same sheer willpower that he uses to refuse the ring is exactly what would've made him a great Green Lantern
And soon enough I shall receive a blue one because with Superman & Lois' season finale having Diggle I still have some hope, that this exactly the trick
It’s like all those series where a power source or weapon needs to choose it’s wielder. Usually those who crave the power and actively seek it are the least suitable for it. There have been many who wanted green lantern rings and were willing to kill to get them, ignoring the responsibility that came with them and what they were created for. Just power obsessed and not seeing that its a power in service of others

Okay, I know I know I know this scene was really disappointing after years of waiting and buildup, but can we please appreciate David's acting in this scene? I mean he really gives it his all here and I was so moved by his performance that when the scene ended I wasn't angry that John Diggle didn't become Green Lantern. And that's not easy to do considering the scene made the whole story a waste of time. I got to give him props for that.
You know, if we'd never seen Digle/John Stewart again after picking up the green glowy thing at the end of arrow it would have been a better end to this storyline than the multi-year-long anti-climax that this became... just poor writing.

The ring tested him and he chose responsibilities over power. Making him worthy to wield the ring as it's chosen master. At least in the comic book but we will see how or if they follow the comic book. It's fun flash and green arrow did the same thing as diggle at the beginning of their great journey. Think about why would they add all this side story for diggle for nothing. Everything that has happened in this show can be found in the comic books.

I would have loved to see Diggle as a full-fledged Green Lantern (and honestly still haven't completely ruled out a cameo appearance), but it does make sense in character for him to have made the decision he did, so I can begrudgingly respect it. This is independent of the behind the scenes stuff mentioned by other commenters, because you can still have those factors and tell a bad story; this show at least got the character right

I love how Diggle is here. If this were not too long after he met Barry, he'd be freaking out, yet here, he talks to him casually like he's not the only Superpowered person he met.
Look at it this way: John Diggle is not John Stewart. Not on Earth-Prime. His character development from Arrow, including his divorce and remarriage - his second chance to be who HE IS on THIS Earth as a good devoted father and husband, would be selfishly thrown in the trash if this 'fated destiny' that came out of nowhere and interupted his life was accepted.
This arc was showing that even if fans wanted him to be the Green Lantern, what would that cost him if he can't return to Earth, at least for years at the very least. As cheesy as it sounds, the only ring he needs and deserves on Earth-Prime is his wedding ring.

Still, the fact that he gave up the chance to have such a mighty power, with his will to become a father who will protect his family, means that he has the will to be chosen by the green power ring.
In a way, I think Diggle's choice was the result of a test proposed by Ling. Whether to accept the green of will or reject it to one's own will.
So, in effect, Diggle believes that one day, once again, Ring may offer him a choice.

Well yes and no. The Bleed is the membrane of DC, the very first thing created within the mind of the perfect Overvoid. It’s contradictions and complexities led to the ideas of plot, of story, development, characters, conflict, the concept of fiction, which is imperfect. The Overvoid created the Angels and the Hands to create the two main Multiverses, DC Canon Multiverse and the Vertigo Multiverse, the latter being famous for the events containing Lucifer’s adventures.
The Bleed is essentially the membrane that is in between all dimensions, realities, universes, and stories of DC. Mandrakk parts of the Bleed as he was corrupted by the contradictions, believing it should no longer exist.
My guess is that this reference to “drinking the Bleed” means that Diggle needs to drink of the potential to make him the next Green Lantern. And it’s not the entire Bleed. It’s only a very small portion, incredibly small, insignificantly small, but enough to give Diggle his new place within the fiction.
How Thawne knows any of that is beyond me. I can see the Bleed and the Source Wall, and that’s a stretch. But Mandrakk? That must have been one terrifying experience.

well green lanterns are basically space police, and as it is we know what happens to people in the force or army when they have families
In the strictest sense, none of the Lanterns are really like that. The closest thing you could argue for is Hal, but he's not looking after his own wife and child, he looks after his niece and nephew and his brother, and that's only when he manages to get some time back on Earth. Guy Gardner doesn't have a wife, but had an on-again-off-again relationship with Ice and literally ran away from his family because they were abusive. As far as I know there's really nothing like that with John, though I think he has a sister. Kyle Rayner has a litany of different relationships, but never starts a family (his own girlfriend being murdered is literally what invented the term "fridging a character").
Alan Scott, the OG Green Lantern (his powers don't come from an Oan Power Ring, they come from some mystical space rock called the Starheart), has a son and daughter (Obsidian and Jade), but again, his powers are not from a Green Lantern Power Ring, so he's not a Green Lantern as we know them now, i.e. intergalactic super cops.

Everyone’s over here saying lanterns don’t do relationships cus there space cops… these are the people forgetting that lanterns just have to patrol there individual space sectors ( usually a little bit larger than a solar system) most lanterns who aren’t main characters are just chilling at home with their families. Hell sometimes we’ve even seen in side stories that lanterns have been able to pass the ring onto their kids just fine

The cube wouldn't have even been a way out for him if it did contain a Green Lantern ring since John wouldn't let him out. This is not setting up Green Lantern, this is something much bigger. Bleed Mandrake, Source Wall, transmutable technology, these all are concepts more related to a New Gods storyline. There was a movie that was cancelled about New Gods, Justice U could pick it up. Now the only way Diggle would want that box back is if something happened to his family or they were taken to another dimension. We know WB/DC would not have allowed a full Green Lantern show on the CW (they are already working on one for HBO max). So this would the best option. We could see a Green Lantern Diggle at some point but that's it.

This is more than likely not a Green Lantern ring at all if Thawne is right. Mandrakk is the Dark Monitor, a vampiric being that wants to consume the Multiverse, and The Bleed is another plane of existence in which he feeds on and uses to his advantage. Diggle was right not to accept what was in the box, it was probably some sort of forged ring that would've ended up doing more harm than good and causing another Crisis situation. That being said though, Mandrakk will probably be the villain for Superman & Lois season 3.

The only reason Diggle said no was because the writers realised he was never gonna get his own "Green Lantern" show. And the flash series doesn't have the budget to incorporate Green Lantern into their show, without it looking absolutely terrible. The Arrow writers left it open for Diggle to become GL because their show was ending and they didn't have to think of the consequences of actually leaving it like that. The Flash writers had to tidy up that storyline if they want the actor Diggle to be a recurring character on the show. So if anyone was actually wondering why Diggle said no, its because they don't have the budget for that character and he's never gonna get his own show.
There's Good Ways to do Special Effects with a Lower Budget. Get or buy or make Green Coloured Glass Items and add Little CGI to them. Green Lantern summoning Item could be Green Glass. We can even have Deeper from the Flash being a Villain for Green Lantern. Seems like the Writers know they themselves aren't smart enough to make any more TV Shows

I will always like Cavanagh's Thawne. So much rage and frustration and pride. But when he gets it, you can see that he does. He didn't even try interrupt Diggle. Almost like he acknowledged the decision in the end.

Imagine when Ezra Miller's creates Flashpoint (he's fired now). And it creates a new Justice League lineup. This is my pick The Batman (Robert Pattinson but in a timeline where we have Nightwing), Superman (Henry Cavill if he's still in it), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Mamoa), The Flash (Grant Gustin or another actor) he can be Wally West or Barry Allen, Green Lantern (Diggle of course). The main plot can be Legion of Doom and it enters in the Darkseid saga
