in part one we review the specifications and upgrades as well as benchmarking my desktop with almost identical specifications for direct comparison!

Loving the channel, i'm typing you from my t430 w/ 3632QM, 16gb of kingston hyper X ram, 256gb msata ssd, Alienware M14x R2 display & new 9 cell battery. I left my 2.5 drive bay empty for now & I purchased the dock w/ working key included. I just bought this machine and upgraded it in the last 30 days.
I also have a brand new never used t430 motherboard. I will go with the 45 watt i7 and build that unit from parts. Glad I found your channel.
aw thanks! your machine sounds like a beast! how does the 3622qm perform? id imagine it runs cooler than my 3840qm, and sips power a bit less too!
how does the mSata perform too? i kept my mSata slot free for mobile broadband (i use my laptops out and about a lot so WWAN/cellular is essential for me) welcome to the channel, so happy to know you enjoy my content

@@TechDave I can't get it to past 19% CPU utilization. I'm most cases its 10% or less. The fan pretty much never comes on. It shocking how good this cooler is. (edit): I forgot to mention I removed the thermal paste and custom cut graphene thermal pads for all the things that would normally use thermal paste. Maybe that is helping.
I own several x201's, a x201S and a x230. But none of them are this cool and quiet. I have a few AFFS screens coming in from china in the next month. Going to do the AFFS mod on a few of these X201's and maybe my X201S.
I owned the x230 for many years. All the other systems are newly purchased in the last 30 days. I am buying up parts and ssytems left and right lol. Just purchased the express card eGPU on ebay today.

the graphene pads thing sound thoroughly intriguing, are they expensive? ive see nPhil of Phil's computer lab use them quite often but he mentioned they are quitre pricey!

i currently own three;
one currently being used by my fiancee with her X230T for Photoshop & capturing footage of her drawing for youtube as well.
(look out for a video early next week about that setup!)
the second is use for my RX 480 8gb for gaming on my T430,
and the third will be used for a 4gb nvidia quaddro (still to buy that) for editing/blender/davinci resolve/premiere pro/after effects etc of which i shall also be making a video in the next week or so (but using my 8gb quadddro K5200, which is currently in my hp proliant server!) so again, look out for that too!

you earned it! was a great idea and has proved quite an essential solution to a previously highly infuriating problem!
T430 here. 3920XM with liquid metal applied to it and NVS 5400m 1gb with liquid metal. (Makes a world of difference for temperatures!) 16gb DDR3 1600mhz. Hardly makes a difference to go 2133 unless you use the Intel HD 4000. Just the laptop runs off of a 135w Thinkpad W series power adapter. For my eGPU setup I have a GTX 1070 using a 430w PSU. For storage the laptop has a 1tb sata SSD, a 512gb mSata SSD and a 2tb HDD in the disc drive bay plus a 256gb SD card. I've owned new since 2012 my first year of college. Came with an i7 3520m and 8gb RAM with 500gb hard drive. Got me through college. I owe this T430 everything.

i only have the intel hd 4000, hence the 2133mhz. im so tempted by getting a new one with built in gpu as its always annoyed me a bit that i dont have it, thanks for ur comment!
@@TechDave The dGPU one with the 5400m has the same performance as a DDR3 model Nvidia GT 540 or GT 630 (Fermi). Using MSI Afterburner you can up the clocks to +120mhz Core and +300mhz Mem and run it all day long. I use my T430 mainly as a portable "360/PS3 console equivalent" meaning I run 720p with whatever in game settings will let me hit a consistent 30fps and then cap that game with RivaTuner Statistics Server. So far uncapped there are a lot of recent games I can run 720p Normal settings at or over 60fps. Halo MCC is one of them. I played and beat all of the Halo MCC games on this Thinkpad. You can run the 55w CPUs in the T430 as well! Make sure your fan/heatsink is made by Delta and not Toshiba so it works with the program Thinkpad Fan Control (check that out btw) to create custom fan profiles. Also liquid metal application (Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut) drops temps 20C on GPU and CPU. So if you find a 3920xm or 3940xm, HIGHLY recommend!
Using the GTX1070 eGPU, there isn't anything this T430 won't play. But the 5400m does get ya by when out of the house. 🐨
@@TechDave Try and find a W530 Thinkpad with a Quadro 1000m 1100m 2000m or 2100m. Awesome Kepler based GPU performance. W530 uses SAME T430 parts. Meaning CPU, RAM, and batteries all work for between the T and W series. Plus the W series has much better cooling. You can pick them up decently cheap second hand. I've been itching to get one, but my dGPU T430 keeps being extraordinary every time I use it. Sorry for the multiple comments, I just really like your T430 230 videos. 😅
@@TechDave Bro, I have the same configuration as you, without dGPU, I have only HD4000 on board. RAM 16Gb good modules from Corsar with Cl 10 timings (and not CL 11, like common memory modules). Do you think it makes sense to look for faster bars for 1866 or like you have for 2133Mhz, or is this difference minimal in practice today?
Question: The T430 has a Nvidia graphics chip on the motherboard. Some do not recommend mixing
the AMD Radeon with Nvidia. Do you see a problem mixing these two for graphics?
Potentially yes, I believe u may have to deactivate the nvidia graphics chip in device manager to work around it, although it may need to be done at bios level, I don't have the dgpu in mine so I can't test. Happy hunting
i have t430 as well, how's the thermals on the cpu when playing games?

Hey, @techdave, I recently bought and 3840qm as well for upgrade form 3320m CPU, but I am getting BSoDs (when running floating point hardware scans vía Lenovo Vantage) ... I am using original/genione 90W Power Adapter... Is 135W charger mandatory for this CPU?
Yes it is, won't charge otherwise
@@TechDavehmm.. even if laptop is not charging, change of the CPU to 3840qm should not result in BSoD the second Floating Point instructions are being used (as I experienced using Lenovo Vantage H/W scan or launching Android Studio).. I had BSoD when CPU was pretty much idle ar 60 degress celsius with full battery. Or it should it make BSoD?
@@HXunbanned I agree not sure what the issue cud be my friend, I didn't have any issues with any similar, genuinely hope u figure it out, but ye the laptop won't charge whilst turned on with a 90w charger, so its defo worth getting the 135w charger
I am on Gentoo Linux, I am thinking about eGPU only to improve my Firefox performance, on T430. My CPU is 3840QM, RAM 16 GB. What Radeon model can you recommend?

Can i use any graphics card in Lenovo t430 i5-3rd gen?
I'd recommend no more than a 4-8gb gpu, and generally AMD seem to have less issues.

From what I've seen ur only option is to remove the WiFi card and attach an egpu that way, but it's messy and u may find it still doesn't work, all I can do is wish u good luck.
Ps: if the WiFi care is mpcie or m.2 connector u might be in luck, but it may use USB as the actual data transfer part (aka it might look like m.2 but on carry usb signal), hopefully this helps with ur research!

can i use the mPCIE for this laptop? the expresscard version is very hard to get in my country
Afaik its possible, using the WiFi card slot. However, in practise when I tried it myself it destroyed my ssd and was very unstable, even with the whitelist removed using 1vyrain bios mod. So yes, but milage may vary and I failed when trying it myself

@RAY Production I used the slot for WiFi, so nearer to the battery. I'm not sure why it destroyed my ssd, I think the instability and rebooting is what did the damage, but who knows

Ngl it runs a bit spicy under load, up into the 90s! But u can use tpfancontrol or throttle the cpu with throttlestop if u have issues, cheers!
