Rattigan going feral at the end is one of the best examples of writing in the movie Throughout the film he has been shown to take great care to look sophisticated and not a rat And then at the end he totally loses it and embraces his feral nature showing his true self
Two cool facts: 1. For the climax of the film, in the Big Ben clock Tower, the filmmakers combined traditional hand-drawn artistry with the latest in technology. During this dynamic two-minute sequence, the animated characters move through 54 moving gears, winches, ratchets, beams, and pulleys created by artists working with computers, aided in part by a field trip to the inner workings of the real clock. Not only did this mark one of the earliest uses of computer generated images in a Disney movie, but paved the way to future movies with beauty and the beast being next. 2. Vincent Price, the voice of Ratigan, said that, among all the roles he played, this was his favorite character that he's done.
I think that's so cool they decided to add in really cool looking CGI. I was so impressed with it while watching it and I don't think I gave it enough attention tbf lol and thank you for the info :D
Fun fact. There are some lyrics from Ratigans song that were removed. Picking them off one by one, Kicking them off, just for fun Such privilege, my view from the Bridge, As all of them bogged and sank! But now, this matchless plot has been hatching Some much more unnatural prank! It's implied that Ratigan threw a bunch of people into the Thames river and shot anyone who tried to swim to the surface.
Well, the song does mention he drowned widows and orphans, not quite as descriptive as the lyrics you posted, but definitely confirmation he's a murderer
They named him Basil because there were a series of Sherlock Holmes films made in the 30s and 40s that were huge hits and starred Basil Rathbone as Sherlock
The movie is based on the children's book series Basil of Baker Street by Eve Titus and Paul Galdone, which were inspired by the Sherlock Holmes movies.
@@otakuwolf4ever985 They did not, they used voice samples of his from another recording. Basil died in 1967 and this movie came out in 1986, and it was certainly NOT in production for 20 years
Subbed when I saw this reaction. As an older millennial the VHS of this movie is a core memory of mine. Vincent Price was an icon of classic horror movies but because of his typecast he never got to sing in a movie until Disney offered him the role of Ratigan. Even though he was quite old at this point he took the role to finally have a chance to sing in a movie and he considered it one of his very favorite roles
I so wish I kept at least some of my VHS tapes 😭 But yeah Vincent Price was so iconic in this role! I wasn’t aware of his other roles tho haha gotta look into it at some point 🤘🏻
8:23 You're definitely on to something. Glen Keane was the supervising animator for both Ratigan and Sykes. He also did Silver from Treasure Planet, so you might recognize some similar visual characteristics in the way he animates his villains.
Vincent Price was a gem in the movie industry and absolute gem the man's voice was so good and so recognizable he could do a State Farm commercial and people would have recognized it immediately
Flaversham was voiced by Alan Young, who voiced Scrooge McDuck until his death when David Tennant then took over and Ratigan was voiced by the legendary Vincent Price. Basil was named after Basil Rathbone, who played Sherlock Holmes in the movies. They used audio of Rathbone from The Red-Headed League as the voice of Sherlock Holmes in this film. The scene in Big Ben was the first time Disney used CG animation. Disney was going to give up animation after The Black Cauldron bombed but the success of this movie caused them to continue making animated movies which eventually led to The Little Mermaid getting made. John Musker and Ron Clements, two of the directors of this film, came up with the idea to make The Little Mermaid while working on this movie.
Ohhh no way! Thank you for all of the information! 😻Especially about the CG animation! I had no idea this was the first time Disney used CG animation! I'm also glad they continued to make animated films haha
I love how, both in the movie and in the book, Basil actually lived in the same house as Sherlock Holmes, and all the parallels therein. How they made Basil smart, but not in a way that would be totally lost to the audience. And Rattigan was voiced by one of the greatest voices of the time. Vincent Price, who also served as inspiration for the Marvel character, Doctor Steven Vincent Strange.
yeah the parallels are really great in this film! omg I had no idea about the Dr. Strange thing! It makes sense, especially given in the cinematic universe he was played by Cumberbatch who also played Sherlock Holmes 😹😹😹😹 love how things go full circle haha
I enjoy this movie. It was a good way of introducing me to Sherlock Holmes as a character. It wasn’t until the Robert Downey jr version in 2008 that I wanted to explore more though
Ratigan is one of the few Disney characters who you can't think of without thinking of their voice actor. Ratigan - Vincent Price, Hades -James Woods, Genie - Robin Williams
This is one of my favorite childhood movies and it still holds up today, and it is a shame that Vincent Price the voice of Ratigan has passed he was amazing not only in this movie but as well as in a few others as well as in the 13 ghosts of Scooby Doo, and he did have a part in Michael Jackson's thriller. The man is a legend Other than that this movie will forever have a place in my heart What I also love about this is that how Ratigan would make an amazing professor Moriarty, Sherlock Holmes mortal arch nemesis then again he pretty much is the rat version of him so never mind Most of the characters tend to be recycled into other movies take the lizard in Ratigan's gang. I remember seeing his design from Alice and Wonderland To roll your R's you must place the tip of your tongue in front of your teeth at the roof of your mouth then below as you pronounce the letter R or make the r sound. 18:16 noticed that fidget is singing Chim chimney Chim Chim Chou from Mary Poppins but it his own way.... or it could be following the leader from Peter Pan 21:13 cartoon logic: if you fight hard enough and long enough you might be able to survive in someone's mouth… Assuming you're small enough to move around in there without them being able to chew you up 23:42 most cartoons have this kind of thing so it's unavoidable luckily they don't show too much… and I express that loosely
it really is a good film that's for sure 😋🤘and yeah that is a shame about Vincent Prince... I had no idea Ratigan was based off of Sherlock's arch nemesis - which tbf I should've guessed that given that Basil said it in the film 😹 regarding Fidget's singing, I wonder which part of Chim Chimney he was singing 😹 I listened to that part of the film and I didn't recognize it. I also don't think I remember how Following the Leader goes so go figure lol hahaha yeah cartoon logic is the best 😹😹😹 yeah the mouse burlesque wasn't too bad for a kids film lol
@ for fidget if it was Chim chimney he was going for the chorus, but if it was the following the leader it was somewhere in the middle for that song but I think it was more Chim chimney
I do love G rated animated movies about mice. Topping the list is a safe and harmless little movie called "The Secret of NIMH". Done by the same person who did the first land before time, so you know it has absolutely no deeply scary or traumatizing scenes in it, despite Don Bluth famously saying "You can show almost anything too kids, as long as it has a happy ending". In all seriousness, it remains one of my favourates too this day.
I've seen a few people in the comments recommend "The Secret of NIMH". Well, yeah if it's done by the same person who made The Land Before Time- I'm sure it'll be sunshine and rainbows... 😬😬😬 (great film nonetheless, I adore The Land Before Time 😻 even tho I cry every time I watch it 😹)
At this point I'm convinced you are just watching all my favourite childhood filmed haha, great vid as always and as an englishman I was very pleased hearing you love crumpets (though the concept of a pizza crumpet does sound a little like blasphemy haha)
haha yayy! 😋🤘 crumpets are best 😻 especially buttered with marmite 😻😻😻😻😻 hahaha I mean if you like pizza I highly recommend trying it 😹 I know some people aren't fans of the idea but it's really good 😻
Ah!! Great Mouse Detective!!! One of my absolutely favorites!!! And, arguably, one of the MOST UNDERRATED Disney films of all time!! Along with having the delightfully devilish and devious Vincent Price having the time of his life in one of is proclaimed favorite roles of Professor Ratigan, The Great Mouse Detective saved Disney's animation department in 1986 when the company's previous film, The Black Cauldron, almost shut down the department in 1985 (can you imagine Disney switching gears to ONLY doing live-action films)? Also, its funny you talk about Sykes when you were getting your first glimpse of Ratigan as Oliver and Company would be the next film released after Great Mouse Detective (in 1988). And...side comment, but I'm thoroughly impressed at how quickly you recognize the sound effects used throughout the films and even saying where they happen in different films on top of that. Even if you don't always remember specifics in story, it's quite a talent to have that kind of memory when it comes to sounds in film.
I can see why you like it so much! It really is super fun 🤘 Oh yeah I've been reading about that in the comments as well - regarding The Great Mouse Detective saving Disney. It's a shame it doesn't get more hype just for that alone tbf hahaha yeah that's awesome the same guy who designed Ratigan also designed Sykes 😹 they did a wonderful job on the character design! oh thank you so much 😋 Some sounds effects I heard when I was a kid watching these films stuck with me for a long time 😹
This movie basically saved Disney. Their previous film, The Black Cauldron, had been a box office bomb, but this movie managed to be enough of a critical and financial success that the company could go ahead with what would become known as the Disney Renaissance.
Fun facts: In the storybook adaptation of the film, the opening is given more context because it's not only Olivia's birthday, but also it was I THINK the queen's Diamond Jubilee (or some other event where the Flavershams managed to see the queen during a parade. If I'm wrong, I will edit this). That's why she says it was her best birthday ever, and why Fidget knew where their house was. Also, Ratigan was actually Vincent Price's favorite role because of just how extravagant and flamboyant he got to be compared to his other roles, and to that, I must agree. One final thing: Apparently humans also exist in this world, because Ratigan's lair is located beneath the Riverfront Pub, the pub that Moriarty, Sherlock Holmes' nemesis runs. Also, if you want to hear more of "The World's Greatest Criminal Mind", the audio cassette retelling (which is on TH-cam) features Corey Burton (Captain Hook) as Ratigan, and in that version, there's an extra verse
oh yeah I think the movie mentioned the queen's diamond jubilee but that's cool the Flaversham's actually SAW it! Regarding the humans, yeah it was really cool to see the parallels and everything between the humans and the mice 🤘
Funny thing, that burlesque scene made Disney worried due to it being too risque for being a G-Rated movie. Since she's not human, it went by censorship.
Hmmm, I'm going on a Disney film odyssey myself soon, so I may check out more of your vids. 😄 Also, great reaction! I saw The Great Mouse Detective on a rented VHS tape back in the '90's. Definitely an underrated movie and great spoof/tribute of Sherlock Holmes. You managed to catch references that I didn't see back then to other Disney films (including the Aristocats, which I saw on the 20th anniversary theatrical re-release).
Oooo hell yeah! :D aww and thank you 😋 Happy to hear you enjoyed the reaction 😋 that's awesome you saw it on VHS! yeah, this film needs more hype that's for sure. haha I think it's cause I recently watched The Aristocats for the first time on the channel so my "sound memory" is kind of fresh
One of my absolute favorite movies, bar none - also, one of Vincent Price's best roles. It saddens me that Disney is no longer capable of greatness like this. (Incidentally, I CAN do the British 'rrr' sound - it's the only one I can do, easily - and hearing you say you couldn't made me analyze how it works, if you're still interested. The trick, I think, is tongue placement; for the British one, you need to have the tip of your tongue up behind your front teeth as you do it - if I were to guess, I'd say the Hebrew version is more top-of-the-mouth.)
I totally agree with you - I really wish Disney would bring back these types of films 😿 (and stop making sooo many live-action adaptations...) oh nice! haha 😋 I sometimes try to place the tip of my tongue behind the front teeth but I think something goes wrong in the process 😹😹😹 it ends up turning into something else but gotta practice haha and yes the Hebrew version is top-back of the mouth
@@TheCatPrideCinema The problem (well, one of many) is that these days, they're mortally afraid of causing offense or of hurting 'the brand'. Back in the '80's, Disney was actively trying to push its limits, and while that didn't always pay off for them, I think 'GMD' was where they found their greatest success in that arena, at least in animation. I mean, you've got drinking and smoking - think about this; both the main hero and the main villain of this movie are smokers; how often does THAT happen in Disney? You've got bar brawls and strippers; you've got genuinely dark and scary moments; you've got all this stuff - and yet, it all adds to the atmosphere and works perfectly, because it doesn't treat the audience like fragile little flowers. It's just this perfect balance of kid-friendly antics and dark and gritty action that I don't think they've really ever struck again. (Incidentally, another great 'pushing the boundaries' '80's Disney flick is 'Return to Oz', if you haven't seen that. Might make for a good reaction in the future, if I may suggest.)
Loved this movie! Coincidentally, and nothing more than coincidence, I will add, this movie came out two years after Nickelodeon acquired the broadcast rights to the hit British animated series DANGER MOUSE (their answer to ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE, complete with sarcastic narrator, fourth wall breaks, and the occasionsl hilariously bad jokes). Danger Mouse's headquarters? Baker Street, but in the mailbox at the corner. In my mind, Basil is an ancestor of DM, snd a founding member of the secret agency DM works for😊
ok, im so impressed... u notice sounds being reused from a movie u haven't seen in a long time... meanwhile I never even noticed those double animations u pointed out in the sword in the stone, that were so close together, having seen the movie tons of times.
aww thank you 😻😋 Some sounds I heard in films I watched when I was a kid stuck with me. I think it has something to do with how some memories form when there's a strong emotional connection. Like Toby's barking brought me back to the carriage scene in The Lady and The Tramp cause it was a very emotionally intense scene. I feel ya on missing some things in movies you see many times, I miss a lot of things in films I've seen many times as well
The Rescuers, the secret of NIHM, An American Tail, and great mouse detective all live in same Mouse universe. Just different places and times. Just my theory.
I can see why you would think that! I mean I only saw The Great Mouse Detective and The Rescuers (which will be up on the channel soon :D ) but I see what you mean, especially since both of those films at least have parallels with the human world 🤘 I'll have to watch the other two
I really enjoy _Basil the Great Mouse Detective_ (as it got slightly renamed to in my country and some others) too. This began Disney's renaissance period after having had a commercially disappointing experience with their previous animated feature film, _The Black Cauldron._
I love this theory that basil is an autistic gay man and ratigan is a gay lover turned rival. Like some people say they act like ex lovers because of how much they are obsessed with each other. If that is true, something must have happened that made them hate each other.
Love this movie along with the secret of nimh. The problem with most animated movies other than too many CGI movies is that they're too afraid to be edgy like these classics. Like no gun fights, no smoking and the fem fatale is not as...curvy.
Vincent Price who voiced Ratigan said that it was hi most favorite roll he'd ever played.
Rattigan going feral at the end is one of the best examples of writing in the movie

In my mind, Basil is an ancestor of DM, snd a founding member of the secret agency DM works for😊
oh wow that's actually really cool 😹 thank you for the info and for your take on it 😸
Glad you watched this movie. It's one of the more underrated Disney movies that has some good quality with its writing and animation.
I'm glad I watched it, too :D it really is a fun watch and needs more hype
My mother took us to go go see this movie when she was supposed to take me to school, first time playing hooky
hahaha love that she did that 😹
More like a rat with a pet cat and a mouse with a pet dog 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha yup 🤣
This is my favorite Disney movie. Because of it, I got interested into detective series.
I'm glad to see you to like it. 😊
Oh nice! Love that! 🤘
haha yeah it's a fun one 😋
This used to be one of my favorite disney movies
I can see why!
What's your fav Disney movie now?
Ah old Disney
back when you can have guns, smoking and a burlesque show in a kids film
hahaha exactly 😹
Although in the movie version Rattigan is a rat, in the book he is just a really big *mouse*
ok, im so impressed... u notice sounds being reused from a movie u haven't seen in a long time... meanwhile I never even noticed those double animations u pointed out in the sword in the stone, that were so close together, having seen the movie tons of times.
aww thank you 😻😋
Some sounds I heard in films I watched when I was a kid stuck with me.
I mean I only saw The Great Mouse Detective and The Rescuers (which will be up on the channel soon :D ) but I see what you mean, especially since both of those films at least have parallels with the human world 🤘 I'll have to watch the other two
Vincent Price was perfect to voice Ratigan. R.I P to the legend himself.
Lion king next!
Love that movie! Watched it many times 😻
I really enjoy _Basil the Great Mouse Detective_ (as it got slightly renamed to in my country and some others) too. This began Disney's renaissance period after having had a commercially disappointing experience with their previous animated feature film, _The Black Cauldron._
yay, another great one
it really is a fun one! :D
The burlesque dancer scene severely confused me as a kid
Haha I can see why
I love this theory that basil is an autistic gay man and ratigan is a gay lover turned rival. Like some people say they act like ex lovers because of how much they are obsessed with each other. If that is true, something must have happened that made them hate each other.
Alien Cat knows where it's at!😉😁
This was a great movie of a great mouse detective that was definitely like Sherlock Holmes!
I agree, this film is a great one 😋
@@TheCatPrideCinema Right on😉
"Mousenapping")) это по-нашему "мышекрадство", или как-то в этом роде.
Black Cauldron! 😊
totally! Adding it to the list 😋
Love this movie along with the secret of nimh.
The problem with most animated movies other than too many CGI movies is that they're too afraid to be edgy like these classics. Like no gun fights, no smoking and the fem fatale is not as...curvy.
I'm definitely curious about The Secret of NIMH 🤘
and yeah I agree, they're not as intense as the classics which kind of sucks...
Who here was freaked out by Ratigan at the end as a kid?
The Cat Pride Cinema "Because of your smile you make life more beautiful" (Thich Nhat Hahn☸)
big fan of pretty miss kitty mouse
Do you look at four fingers and five fingers?
Could you react to the movie Tarzan? (1999)
I've seen it soooo many times over the years - one of my favs 😻
