  • ASL Receptive Fingerspelling Practice.
    Intended Audience: Mid-semester, Level 2
Dr. Bill of ASL University (Lifeprint.com) drills a volunteer student on fingerspelling.
    --------------------------------------
Note from Dr. Bill: Yes, I know that at times I spell "very fast" to beginner level students. I do that on purpose to help them get past always trying to read "letter by letter." The goal is to learn to recognize the shape and flow of fingerspelled words. I intentionally challenge the students to see how much they are capable of accomplishing.

    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
Hey, I could really use your help.
If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you.
A donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com.
Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!”

    Thanks!

p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at:

Take care and love to you all.

These practice videos are so helpful for someone learning to fingerspell. The repetition really helps. I think the biggest challenge is looking at the word as a whole and not letter-by-letter.

  • @sign-language
    @sign-language  5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Tips:
    * If needed, view the video on a desktop computer and slow the speed down until you can see the letters. Watch it one time through.
    * Then watch it again and again at higher and higher speeds until you can catch the words very easily even at high speed. This means you now "own" those words -- you have learned to see them as "shape groups" instead of individual letters.
    * Then put a link to the video in your calendar for 3 days later, 10 days later, and 30 days later. Revisit the video at those intervals to insure that you still own the words. If not, then reduce the intervals.
    * Visit the th-cam.com/users/billvicars channel and use the intra-channel search (not the main search at top center, but the intra-channel search on the right side of the tab menus) and search for "fingerspelling." Then create your own playlist of fingerspelled videos that match your current needs and preferences.
    * Continue to use "spaced repetition" on various videos to further lock in (to your mind) the various "letter combination shape groupings." The more you acquire -- the better you become at reading finerspelling.
    * Consider going to the Lifeprint.com site and downloading the Gallaudet Type Font and regularly converting documents (that you need to read anyway) into "Gallaudet Font" and enlarge the size and spend hours reading in text-based fingerspelling font for a few weeks.

Receptive finger spelling is my weakness so I'm very happy to discover this video plus the tips that you included below on how to slow the video down and watching the video repeatedly at various times. And the wonderful lady who was your student! She worked so hard to understand the words.

I really like your videos. It's nice to see this one is current. You're very fast. It's helpful (for me) that the student is not as proficient as you. Thanks for the info.

Dr. Vicars, thank you as always for your helpful videos. I'm taking ASL 2 as well as a class dedicated to fingerspelling, and your videos provide me with the extra practice I need.

I'm noticing an interesting thing on the fingerspelling videos that are centered on a specific topic (same can be said for your videos centered on a topic as well). With just that bit of context, my mind takes some shortcuts (or maybe lucky guesses, more like) and is able to correctly guess the word. Maybe some pattern-anticipation of sorts?
Whatever the reason, hell, I'll take anything as progress at this point, haha.
Thanks as always for the videos, Bill.

      Absolutely! Humans are prediction engines.
The humans who didn't develop the skill of combining clues are the ones who got eaten and didn't pass on their genes.
      "context" + "myelination" + "rapid fingerspelling" =
      successful efficient transfer of information
      www.google.com/search?q=myelination
      Congrats on your progress!

I'm in ASL 2 right now and I can't get any of these. Yikes!

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

"ASL 2" in this case is simply a way of stating that you should have a working knowledge of what each letter of the manual alphabet looks like when presented slowly and in "dictionary" (ABC chart) form. The point isn't that an ASL 2 student should be able to read these fingerspelled words but that an ASL 2 student could make use of the video by the magic of the video player's speed control option (on desktop computers) and the rewind options (your left-arrow key on a full-size keyboard is your best friend while using videos to study -- it jumps you back in time 10 seconds). By using the jump-back method you can quickly and effectively re-watch something a dozen times -- thus massively increasing your exposure and getting over learning humps.
You'll note that my student model is struggling like heck.
Compare it to a weight-lifter lifting a heavy weight.
The struggle is intentional (and good for her -- but it might not feel like it at the time).

Sometimes TH-cam reduces the resolution in an attempt to be "helpful."
You might want to cross-check (compare) the video on a desktop computer and use the gear icon to select a high definition setting for the video. Then compare to whatever device you used to watch the video the first time.

Yah. I felt stupid afterward when I realized that I changed it without thinking.
