(Audience level: ASL 2 mid-semester)
ASLU: ASL University Level 1, Lesson 5. Dr. Bill Vicars reviewing a basic story with Roy -- an ASL student volunteer.
This video is intended for individuals who have completed "ASL 1."
The goal here is to get the student signing a short narrative. The narrative should be learned after watching the ASLU Lesson 20 instructional video.
Story: "Back when I was young, my hair was brown and curly. I was thin and handsome. Really, I was! Now? Things are different. I'm older. I've gotten a buzz cut since my hair has been falling out. I'm not actually fat but the pizza store knows my first name.

I would love a Patreon option, so that the donation could be set up on an automatic monthly basis. Usually there are "rewards" associated with different donation levels, but I think that you do enough without having to worry with those. 😁
Thanks to your videos, I'm now able to ask my deaf co-worker simple things like, "How are you?" She gets such a big smile on her face, not having to use her notepad to "talk" all the time. 😉
I’ve always wanted to learn ASL... thanks to your videos, last week at Starbucks I was able to sign “no that’s not mine” to a deaf person who was using ASL with her friend and she asked me where I learned ASL: I told her your videos and I was actually able to have a short conversation (half of it fingerspelling

I've seen people sign beautiful with a b sand handsome with an h in the same movement as pretty, is that still okay?
My recommendation is to have two different skill sets:
1. Your expressive signing skill set.
2. Your receptive signing skill set.
For your expressive signing skill set I recommend you avoid excessive initialization of ASL signs with English letters. Sure, some signs commonly do use initialization. However many signs are "over initialized" and simply work better using the non-initialized version.
For your receptive skill set it is good to be able to recognize a wide variety of signs -- including Signed English and initialized signs.
To be clear, I do not recommend you sign "beautiful" with a "B." It is considered "Signed English" -- not ASL.
"Handsome" with an "H" is seen somewhat in the Deaf Community but again, I do not recommend it.
