Katelyn moved on to nursing school! My ASL 2 (main) model was an awesome young lady named Sarah. I was very fortunate to work with both of them.
I'm a hearing person and seriously though signs are an important form of communication for people with certain disabilities it's just beautiful to me, a person who has no such impediments as to hearing or talking seeing those rapid hand movements forming shapes and words...
Just seeing people signing like that and wanting to know just what are they saying, it intrigues me.
Their psychology, their everyday lives all that just spikes up my curiosity that's why I wanted to learn sign language'
And seriously I've only seen only two of your videos so far Mr Bill and I'm already starting to understand and properly learn sign! Thank you for posting these video it's very helpful and educative! :)

10 times I had to watch this before I could remember all 100 signs. Repetition is key to memorization.
It could also help to practice each session when you finish it and review previous ones at the same time. Perhaps make flash cards with all the signs you've learned, then after each lesson, add to them and give yourself a mini quiz.
How did it go? How's your ASL now? Would you still recommend Dr Bill?

I am half deaf and continue to loose my hearing. I was lucky enough to bump into someone who is fully deaf who taught me a lot of ASL before we moved to seperate states. Now I see how ignoreant the world is to deaf people, like when I saw a cashier screaming at the top of her lungs to a man who obviously didn't hear her. I had to step in and now starting to offer sign language lessons for those in my hometown who don't know it for we have several adults who are deaf in my city along with children whom cannot communicate.

Courtnie Harrison Today there was a deaf couple who came in to order food. I don’t know sign language so I went and got a paper so we could communicate through writing. I felt bad and I learned how to say “thank you” and “good night” in sign language. Now I’m here trying to learn more.

I am losing my hearing also. I've dabbled with sign language all my life, but I need to really get on the ball and go full force with it as do my family and friends; I miss out on most of life because people don't realize how much I am not hearing, and don't remember to make sure I am keeping up with the conversations. Frustrating, for sure!
But of course, even WITH sign language, I'll still be saying, "What? What's that you say? Can you repeat that?" Because signing is done so quickly, and my eyes are not fast enough. Haha. Sighhh.

One of my friends has a deaf daughter and it troubled me that I cannot communicate with her, therefore I'm determined to learn asl. I'm already on my way to learning, I know I must take my time but I can't learn fast enough. Thank you for the videos

Hi Bill. I am a teacher of English in a public high-school in Antofagasta, Chile. I have 5 students with hearing loss since March,.Finding your videos has been awesome to me, now I have a tool to teach them English. They do not have it in their school program but they are eager to learn.

If you have a smart phone you could try to learn from the app known as "Marlee Sign". There are free lessons.
I thought that the Spanish sign language was different from ASL? Are you teaching them American sign language instead?

, according to what I have seen different Spanish country are different some rarely are the same, ex: Puerto Rico and USA almost the same- sometimes PR sign for water is letter A for agua (water) instead of W, but Honduras is different they sign the word caress differently on the cheek for us in USA means whore, so Spanish sign is different.
I thought international sign language would help but it doesn't.
I love how you show not only multiple ways of signing a word, but also the different angles of the sign. This definitely made learning much easier, thank you!

For those like me who struggle with the speed of the videos. There is a feature in You tube where you can slow down the videos to as slow as 1/4 speed. For me it is the only way to keep up. By the way Dr. Vicars.... I think you are hilarious , have great humor and a very good teacher. I am a hearing person but my son's friend has deaf parents and they are very nice people. After watching your videos I was able to have my first conversation and it went great.....So excited to learn more....thank you
I'm autistic . So i get (or got in my case) to go to a work program for vocational rehab people. From there i worked with people who are deaf. They inspired me to learn sign language. So here I am :3 .
Watching this because a group of deaf kids came to my job to order and wrote it on paper wish I could have signed back a lot of these helped thanks
it is definitely a great skill to have. And it makes them feel really happy even if you try. keep practicing.
Shush Ackles same here, she came up and had it on her phone and at the end she was signing something, it looked to me like 'thank you' and I felt bad for not knowing how to sign 'youre welcome' a lot of people that come to my restaurant are deaf and I feel bad every single for time.
Bill you are the Bomb. My son has autism and has been non verbal since almost 2yrs old right after we learned clap your hands nursery rhyme he stop talking. I have been desperately trying to get sign language and an ipad for this. No support and all i have gotten are NO'S from the Palm Beach County School District leaders who are supposed to support early child education for children and parents. But i will never give up on my son. Bill you rock!!😙💞

I work at an amusement park every summer and have to instruct ride safety to deaf people on certain rides occasionally but I only knew like 2 signs! your channel is actually really helpful with making it easier to communicate, so thank you!

I have a deaf teenager attending ISD we all-Dad, mom, and her brothers- sign with her, even though she is verbal AND bilaterally aided. We have always encouraged her to sign and communicate with others based on how she feels comfortable. Thank you for making this approachable for so many people. Wish I'd found you years ago.
I started learning ASL about a year ago using the interntet. When I started I viewed this video and knew 0 of the signs; I got bored within a minute. Now here I am a year later, and I could sign every single word in this video. It really helped me learn, and show how much progress I've made.
I am partially deaf, and though it is most likely I will not continue to loose my hearing, it terrifies me. I am determined to learn just in case. Your lessons really helped when my parents thought it was useless to take actual classes. Thank you for being such an amazing teacher.

I was in the Orlando airport recently and saw a man signing. After I got his attention, I told him I was learning ASL. I was then able to carry on a conversation with him. It was so exciting and the first time I was able to use ASL in a conversation with a deaf person. All my ASL knowledge is from your videos so thank you so much for posting these!

Im learning ASL because My little brother is half deaf and we prefer sign language because he screams when he talks because he cant really hear himself. Also because I grew up with ASL and I love teaching my friends at school! ASL is such a beautiful language!! Thanks, your videos really help me learn new words that I didnt already know!!

Thx for the tip James! The embarrassing part for me is that I do learn easily but I am a bit wary about learning sign language. You see, I actually am HOH and think I will not succeed at it- FOR THAT VERY REASON. I know- what an ironic thing to say or think! :-) I was discovered to have a mild to mod loss at age 5 & learned to get along with & without hearing aids. My diction has always been very good, so many people were not aware I was a HOH person. But learning ASL? Definitely insecure about it.

Switched At Birth is an American TV show about two girls who were, well, switched at birth at the hospital and they eventually meet in their teens. One of them is deaf and basically there's a lot of ASL in that show.

I work in a nursing home I have a patient born Deaf, and no one can really communicate to/with her. I have made it my personal mission to learn as much as possible. Because I, myself am slowly going deaf. I have learned so much from you! I have tried the books and it just sometimes doesn't translate well enough on hand form and expression. I still have a lot more to learn, as I'm just now starting to form basic sentence structures. For the time being, I'm concentrating on basic needs for my patient and working from there.. Wonderful. Been trying to teach myself some ASL on the sides (as a way to pass the time before my summer lesson starts) and videos like these are super helpful.
ASL should be taught at schools instead of other foreign languages, since they may (or may not) be far away, whereas people who sign are right next to us!
My cousin recently got into a terrible car accident and lost all his hearing.Before this his was an ASL instructor at church so he already knew ASL. But after watching this video I can communicate with my closest cousin and friend. Thank you so much for making me understand ASL and have a conversation with my cousin,it helped a bunch!☺️👍

For awhile now I've wanted to learn sign language. It's not offered in my school though :( I'm going to try to learn it on my own however even though I know it's going to take a long time

I work in a Hospital and I have found over the last year that we have a large deaf community that we serve, and I love watching and learning with these videos. I am hoping to find a class locally to join at some point, but for now these videos do a great job at getting me started.
My dad bought me an intro to learn ASL and I've never been able to understand most of it since it wasn't very clear so thank you for making this video. :)
I know you do a lot for free, but cannot stress enough helpful your vids have been for me. I just purchased your full set and dont know if I could pass my 3rd asl course without your help. So please keep it up. Btw even my instructors have your vids saved for instructional purposes in my college classes.
I babysit a boy from a home with a deaf parent and I find your videos help me sign and communicate with the child. At 1 year he has at least 10 signs!
I just went through this video with a deaf kid I met; I have never been able to speak to him before, but now we have some basic communications and it's amazing!

Hi Bill, thank you for posting this! It's really interesting for me because I live in Belgium (Europe) and I am learning French-speaking Belgian Sign Language (which is totally different from ASL and even from French Sign Language!). This video is a really nice opportunity for me to learn some basic signs in ASL in order to prevent misunderstandings when travelling... For example, your sign for "school" means "printing"/"newspaper" over here, and your sign for "day" (with the index finger pointing) means "border" :-D Funny, eh?
As I am in school studying to, hopefully, be a physical therapist one day I got the Idea to learn sign language, since I think that it's not a language many people know. Even tho my hearing is completely "average" I want to learn. I think comunication is everything in life and as this is a language not many people know, It can make someone's day if you can communicate through it, which means a lot. I thank you for your being an amyzing teacher.
This has been like a much needed refresher course. My mom taught me ASL when I was 4 years old. I still remember a lot but I forgot most. I'm now a waitress and I have a lot of deaf customers. I'm also mostly deaf myself now so thank you for the help. 👍😄

Great video!!! I'm a teacher of 2 year olds and they know about 60% of these signs. We work on them everyday and I encourage them to use them throughout the day. It's so cute that sometimes I can just sign and they know what I'm saying.
I USED to know ASL well enough to teach it myself for the ARC. But as I've not used it in many decades now, I've forgotten much of it. Your videos are a great help in refreshing this old memory! Thank you!

Bill Vicars I love your ASL videos! I was born deaf in my rt. ear. Then in 2011, I had to have Brain Surgery. During my recovery, I contracted both viral and bacterial Meningitis. All of that left me with about 30% hearing in my left ear. I do wear a hearing aid, I got my 1st. one when I was 4. In elementary school, they took me out of class for an hour a day, from 1st to 4th grade to learn to read lips, body language, etc. but never sign language. Finally at 45, I am now taking ASL classes at my local Disability Center. There are a lot of ASL videos out there, but I like the way you take the time and go over hand movements. It's nice to have someone there to teach, that way we can see how you correct their mistakes. The videos I have seen are just people signing, and they go so fast, it is hard to tell if I am doing it right or not. Just a bit of my story, and a big Thanks!
I've been doing Lifeprint lessons whenever I have time, and I try to repeat them as often as I can, too - I find that repeating a lesson at least 2-3 times helps make it "stick." I have learned so much in such a short amount of time - thank you, Dr. Bill!

after taking as ASL course in college a year ago I found that I was starting to forget my signs but watching this video brought it all back and taught me a couple new ones.

thank you for posting this video. i'm trying to lear ASL after viewing a show called Switched at Birth, where several characters are either deaf or hard of hearing. btw...what are the preferred terms to use to be polite and caring?
i spent 14 day with a new friend that has been deaf since birth, and coincidentally with another new friend who's husband is an ENT specialist who's practice is surgically adding cochlear implants. none of knew each other until we all meet to ride & camp together at burning man in 2015. we used little notepads & pencils to communicate, then adding some sign language. a wonderful learning experience for the 3 of us!
The term "Deaf" (capitalized) is indeed the current preferred term for culturally Deaf members of the "Deaf Community." Often you will see the phrase "Deaf and Hard of Hearing." That is good to use at least once near the beginning of an article regarding Deaf people in general. The term "hearing impaired" is NOT good to use any more and has been rejected by the Deaf Community.
Many traditional writing "style" guides have not caught up to the advances in terminology usage so if you are going to use the capitalized "Deaf" in your writing of academic papers you may wish to include an "author's note" in which you explain your use of Deaf-related terminology.

Hi Bill! I am a student at my local University where I am studying to become an Elementary Teacher! I took two ASL classes at the local community college before transferring over, and am very ashamed to admit that I have forgotten some of the ASL that I loved learning. No excuses; I should have kept up on it. I will be continuing to watch your videos so I can become familiar again with ASL. When I was working two jobs, I came in counter with two separate deaf women in one week. One at one job, the other at the other job. On the appointment paper, we were instructed to use sign language...which I don't know.
I decided to take up sign language, which will benefit me in the healthcare field, anyways! I plan on actually taking this next semester, but in the mean time, it doesn't hurt to teach yourself! So thank you very much!

I used to know ASL, but after not signing for so long I forgot how. My sister is deaf, and I hate that I don't know how to communicate with her. Is there a place to go for "standard" signs other than the ones on your Site? Sometimes I search for a word, can't find it or find many different versions, so I just make one up. Is it better to just spell out words you don't know?

i have a question: does the meaning change of any or some signs if they are done with the left hand, because i am left handed and it feels awkward to sign with my right?

+Elizabeth Blackmore Decide on which hand to use as your dominant hand, (usually the hand you eat and write with) and then do your signs with your dominant hand as the one that does the movement (for signs in which only one hand is moving). If you are right-handed then you should move your right hand the same way I move my right hand since I'm right handed.

Which hand do you use to write? I use both hands also to do different tasks but I would think that if you're ambidextrous, you should use your right hand as your dominant hand for signing and stick with that for every sign you do.
You should choose a dominant hand and stick with it.

THANK you for this! I stumbled upon this when I typed in "How to use facial expressions when signing" My Godson (3years of age) is nonverbal autistic. He OUT OF THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE started to sign after some youtube videos his Mom put on. My husband and I took several levels of ASL classes 20 years ago. We both first learned by being immersed in the deaf culture with a friend who taught at MD School for the Deaf. So I actually learned to read/understand what a person was saying before I could answer back. We both used it a lot as we worked in our community. However, over time those situations changed and needless to say much of it has been forgotten. My interest was peaked again when my nephew got engaged to a young lady who is losing her hearing. I am so glad I found your web site. I have ordered two books I used to have and a set of cards to carry with me. My husband remembers more than me. I am beginning to remember much more. Now to get it in conversation form again. Thank you for putting this out there. I love how you teach.

I am wanting to become a deaf interpreter. I have absolutely no idea where to start and what classes I need to take. Any suggestions?
A good place to start is by visiting the website of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. See www dot RID dot org. To build a foundation I recommend you go over to my website, Lifeprint dot com and go through the lessons starting with lesson one and working your way up. Eventually you'll want to do a search for "Interpreter Preparation Programs" and/or "Interpreter Training Programs." You'll need to obtain a bachelors degree in order to take the RID certification test. The BA degree doesn't need to be in "interpreting" or even sign language (but it would obviously help). Some people become skilled signers by hanging out with Deaf friends or coworkers and then read books regarding professional conduct of interpreters and then apply to take the test (and sometimes pass). The RID organization requires the BA degree because they want to make sure that their members have a strong educational foundation prior to going out into the world and attempting to convey complex concepts from one language to another.
Question! how relevant is the signs shown in these videos? these videos are from 2013. is that a problem for the changing of the language or is it all just about the same for 2015?

Look at your own sentence in English. Ask yourself, "Did the words in my English sentence exist in 2013?"
Looks to me like every one of the words in your sentence "existed" in 2013 and are still being used in 2015.
The signs that tend to change a lot are the newly created signs, technology signs, and "current events."
For example, there were MANY versions of the sign for "email" during the decade after email became popular. Over time the sign stabilized and we now generally only see the same few versions. Currently we are seeing quite a bit of change in signs related to social media.
When Barack Obama became famous we needed a sign for "Obama." His "namesign" went through quite a few versions and then settled down to one main version (plus those who prefer to spell it).
Signs for words like "mom" and "dad" do not change very much because the existing signs work fine and are well established.

I watch this every day and other videos to help me learn ASL bc as a cosplayer, in many conventions i meet deaf cosplayers or fans and these have helped me sign back 💕💕💕💕💕

+Bruna Chaves "Excuse" and "forgive" are very similar signs. If you use a single, strong movement it can mean "laid off" (of work), or "released" (from obligation or expectation). When you have questions about individual signs I recommend you try looking those signs up at my website, Lifeprint.com and seeing if I've got a page on them.

+Lochmock I'm currently taking sign language second year and now teaching my homeschooling my children. Bill's ASL is quite accurate though it does reflect, as any language would, some regional preference. I am in Michigan and while his preferences show a FEW different signs than I would use, he does take the time to teach the available options. My suggestion is to learn them all. He is your best answer to your question, of course, but I recommend that you use his videos as a follow up to the instruction you are provided. Trust me... every instructor is different and what works for one may not for others. Use your book and learning materials as assigned if you're taking a course. What's vital here is facial expression and form. Make sure that any other vid you may watch is actually ASL and not another form as it CAN confuse you. Best of luck on your effort!
