      My problem was that the movie did nothing to convince me that he or the citizens of gotham changed. He did the same thing in the beginning and end of the movie that made people afraid. Besides the cinematography and wardrobe, it was such an unconvincing narrative.

    • @3Kings_Industries
      @3Kings_Industries หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      He made a conscious statement about his impact on inspiring brutal vigilantism, and recognized that he needs to do better, in his personal mission.

    • @VonJay
      @VonJay หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@3Kings_Industries HE made the statement but his behavior didn't change. It's the same behaviour that made gotham citizens afraid of him. It's so unconvincing because, the initial behaviour we see in the beginining of the film, doesn't have to be a global consensus on batman's temperament. EVERYONE in gotham, as is implied, thinks the same about the Bat? So the thesis of the film is unconvincing on its own. I still bought in while rolling my eyes, but then the beautiful music and the non verbal cues from gotham citizens imply that they LEARNED something about Batman, when he was kicking @ss at the end in the same exact way in the beginning. Totally unconvincing as an arc for gotham citizens. For Batman sure, in seeing that he inspired the villains as well or, that they see some equivalence between them and the bat. But that story and theme was already done in the Dark Knight Trilogy, to a way more effective and convincing scale. In the dark knight trilogy, Bruce's desire was to "inspire the creation of other symbols" other than the bat, we have fake batmen wearing hockey pads with shotguns, who get the wrong and right idea at the same time. Then we have the Joker who gets the right and wrong idea as well. It isn't until the Dark Knight rises, that we see two others create their own symbol, in Catwoman and robin, till we see batman's vision realized.

    • @Stealthybat39
      @Stealthybat39 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Ummm, we did see it; the Riddler is literally the embodiment of the citizens. Batman inspired the Riddler; he fueled the chaos for Gotham, Riddler is literally Batman but his methods are more extreme, he literally washed away corruption at the end. Batman did make a bad effect; the prison scene shows it all, Batman calling Riddler a psychopath, hes trying to deny that hes the symbol of chaos rather than hope, he essentially the inspiration for everyone. Catwoman, a citizen of Gotham, also chased vengeance because she was also inspired by him. "I thought you were vengeance," she said, Batman also confused, not wanting to help until the prison that he figured out everything, he found the cause for all of this, and its him. Dude, how did you sit through a 3-hour film and still not figure out everything?

    Batman cut the THICK electrified cable above him because that was the most practical way to cut it in one swift strike, you can’t do the same if you’re chest is right by the cable, you don’t have a swing from that angle and closeness, it logical. If you start slowly cutting the cable up close you’d get electrified before you cut through it which was his whole point. He also wanted to get down to help the people right after and the fall in and rise from the water was a visual baptism for his transformation from vengeance to hope

    Matt Reeves has gone on record for explaining that this is the Year 2 version of not only Batman, but each of the iconic characters (the batmobile is early stage, Catwoman's mask is just a ski mask, Riddler's outfit-- hell, it's the reason Penguin got his own developed show) everyone is here, but they're not quite established and there's plenty of room to grow. So by the time the Batman Part II comes out there should be a decent amount of development for everyone and everything.

      We just saw the criminal underboss Falcone die, the Riddler had already killed several high ranking governmental officials and nearly had the new voice for mayor killed as well, then flooding the city making transport between areas near impossible. The movie was hardly "everything ending well" and more "Batman has figured his shit out and just in time because the real work is just starting."

Batman would walk into a crime scene and be like “ok you missed this, this and this. There’s evidence over here, blood stain over there.” They portrayed his IQ very well, I always thought that was overlooked a lot in previous adaptations. Him deciphering the ciphers and solving the riddles were a testament to how smart he is. Good catch, Matt. Yes, the blur on the edges of frame are due to this movie using anamorphic lenses. It’s an old technique from the 1970s. The film is shot in a square aspect ratio in order to maximize film quality by using a greater surface area of the film stock and then the squished image is stretched out onto widescreen format which creates blurred edges and oval lens flares. Spielberg used it in Raiders. Anamorphic creates a retro feel.

    The Batman was shot on a set of highly unusual and reportedly damaged anamorphic lenses with *very* aggressive background defocus on every shot to allow the bokeh distortions to be more noticeable. You can see it by looking in the corners where they bend outwards, making the skyline look like it goes on forever. Even the building replacements were comped into the volume and then shot on the Alexa instead of vice versa for a more "practical" look. Most of the post VFX shots come from the car chase, which they couldn't shoot live due to pandemic restrictions

    "Nobody died."
    Matt, after reacting to the grisly murders of several Gotham public servants.
    lol, don't ever change, Matt.
    I feel like you were sucked in for the first half and started to waver through the second half (basically before and after the batmobile chase). I'm hoping Reeves whittles away some of the excess in the sequel; this first movie has so much good in it, but it's all stretched a bit thin (and this is coming from a huge fan of the movie). And, yes, that's meant to be a proto-batmobile that Bruce basically built on his own, hence why it's so barebones. For me, that batmobile and the chase are top tier based on presentation/execution alone, _especially_ the sound design.
    Edit: one other thing to add. It's been noted ad nauseam that Bruce in this isn't interested in being Bruce, and probably doesn't know how, but it's also worth pointing out that he's not really Batman just yet. That's why he's stealthy in one instance and stomping around the next, has a batmobile that causes hearing damage when he starts it up, and why he almost seems to not really care about the innocents around him (many have pointed out the difference between the guy on the train platform vs. the girl on the roof of Gotham Square Garden). He's entirely fixated on the criminal element and being Vengeance, ignoring the people and inadvertently enabling the rise of his insular nemeses (Riddler, Penguin), which is what he realizes at the end. His whole "not there yet" character arc is more comprehensive than most realize. I think that's why he and Gordon are such a good match in this movie: they're both lawful good, but Gordon is to the mob (systemic) what Batman is to the Riddler (singular).

    • @anthonyanderson9303
      @anthonyanderson9303 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The 2nd half of this film definitely dragged along. Wasn't a big fan of the act 3 climax. It totally went against Riddler's original motivations. Also, the Joker scene was cringed and forced. Completely unnecessary. Having said that, Pattinson did a good job as Batman even if Bruce Wayne was pretty nonexistent.

    32:40 to answer your question Matt, since the colonization days from white europeans they created systems in which they would stay on positions of high status and wealth wherever they settled and give people of color and indigenous the lowest of the low when possible. Although marginalized groups have gotten more rights over the centuries by fighting for those unfortunately to this day its still a problem where the rich have more power and screw over poor people who many happen to be people of color and indigenous as part of the consequences of the legacy of colonization. It is no surprise most law makers and people in charge of big business happen to be white and male cause of the system of laws and influences giving them favoritism and more bigger boost to achieve those positions than marginalized groups. Catwoman being a black woman from a single poor mother and experiencing that type of life was more easy to spot the privileges that come with being white, male, or rich if not all combined in comparison to people like herself. So Holden it was not something that is only said because its more popular now a days. It was said too because marginalized groups have been silenced most of history and they have always known that but thanks to being able to have won their rights through hard work, they've been able to be given a mic too to speak of their experiences and not just exclusively the ones that have tried to opress them. And part of that more people in privileged positions with good hearts have gotten to hear what marginalized people have got to say and let them say it or repeat it so more people can hear it too. Its not wrong to be white or male, it just happens that there comes privilege with those due to how history was shaped, and she like many people are angry that selfish people that happen to be in positions of privileges choose to either do nothing or screw over marginalized people

    • @wolfman100hits
      @wolfman100hits หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also forgot to say. I remember there was an argument years ago that Batman was selfish like other rich people irl for not trying to change the system that creates more criminals and help poor people. But then there was shown a lot of moments from the comics and media where he would share his wealth to change things and even give some criminals second changes at redemption for better lives. I noticed this Batman is exactly that criticism that people tried to say and the movie acknowledges that with Catwoman calling him out saying he probably grew rich to understand and the major saying he as bruce Wayne is not doing anything for the city with his money. He was just too focused on being a punishment for criminals with violence that lead to other wanna be vigilantes like riddler and his followers. Once he understood the example he was making he realized this is not how to change Gotham for the better and save it but also by providing it with hope as Batman at the end. Making me think the ultimate end goal of this iteration is he will realize he can lower crime by using his money to help poor people and the ones who are more likely to go into crime. He will be a change in the city both as batman and Bruce Wayne he just needed to realize violence and punishment was not the only way. Making me wonder if Matt Reeves saw this argument years ago and decided to make his Batman build to be the one of the comics that helps people with hope and money with both identities.

    Something great from Robert Pattinson is the movie "Remember Me" which he did during his Twilight days. Completely unnoticed, probably due to his time in Twilight overshadowing everything else. But Pierce Brosnan plays his dad in that movie, and it's a really, really good watch. Drama, so nothing fantastical or supernatural about it :D

    Coincidentally I just rewatched this movie a few days ago. Took me way too long to realize that “Im vengeance” isn’t just a cool one-liner, it’s literally the name Bruce gave his crime fighting alter ego. Batman is a name that the city came up with, for obvious reasons.

    So glad you guys reviewed it. It’s my favorite movie of all time so even if Matt doesn’t love, I’m just excited to see his reactions at certain parts
