29er wheels , the worst and senseless trend ever. Same goes for 27,5. Just greed of profit for global corporations, not more or less. 26 wheels were always sufficient and adequate in MTB section and still deliver significantly more useful advantages in comparison to 29er or 27,5 wheels. Everybody should ride the bike and wheelsize he likes, and I havent said that the Bikes are the greatest and best because of the 29ers, it was just about the look and beeing different than a Session or Slash.

That should be called "relatively budget friendly." Its still a ton of money, but when you realize that Enve will sell you a set of wheels for nearly that much 3000 seems reasonable for an entire bike.

That's an easy trend to ignore; just buy a bike costing half that and be happy. An aluminum hardtail with a mid-range fork will tackle all of the riding most people will ever do. Channels like this contribute to the problem, featuring professional athletes weekly doing what for most people would be once-in-a-lifetime trips. Entertaining as that is, most of the content in places like this is not really relevant to most of us. Be a contrarian: ride a bike that works for the riding you do, even if it's not expensive. There are people out there shredding their local trails on single speed fully rigid bikes; that might not be for you, but if it works for them, think of all the maintenance and money they save, to say nothing of weight.
Random Ryder the ultra high end is nice but not that much better. Just buy a bike that you can afford and don’t be upset about what others are doing or buying. It’s not all about the bike, it’s about how you ride it. Also, there are pro deals available if you know the right people and a good secondhand market. If you bought a top end dirt bike/ sport bike like you can with mountain bikes, you’d also pay a tremendous amount. Not having an engine doesn’t make bicycles any less high tech.

Trevor P man, every time I call out “broke bitches” like you just did, I get absolutely torn a new one. Apparently i’m a rich asshole who has no sense of reality, and not a guy who likes riding nice bikes and drives around in an old reliable car, doesn’t go on vacations all the time, go out for meals all the time etc. Ironically I get the impression most of the people who tell me that probably make a lot more money than I do. I just think that the thing you should spend the most money on is the thing you love the most, but big box stores have taught the majority that bikes should be disposable and look good, but not necessarily to be reliable or safe, rather than buying an affordable really nice used bike.

Coming from road cycling, I would say that elitism in MTB is quite mild. The lycra dudes won't even look at you, if your kit doesn't have enough logos and your glasses aren't reflective enough. And don't even get me started on carbon.

Making a bike that you already own hard to upgrade by changing sizes, standards and tools required to fit them. My bike is only two years old but has a qr rear wheel and a straight steerer tube and isn't boost.
I was surprised my '13 Trek Cobia was so outdated for the same reasons you mentioned. I want to upgrade it to 1x12 but after I get done paying to replace all the incompatible parts to fit a QR frame, I could just buy another hardtail!

Biking is a lot like golf in that aspect. Several years back it was very hard to get anything under 1000usd that was decent. Nowadays there are decent starter bikes at around 200usd.
Saddly 7 moths later I see bikes in shops for around 15.999 € that's about 18.000$... And brakes FOR Each 900 bucks.... So 1800 bucks just for two brakes... Than you still need the levers an stuff wich cost another 200 each.... I stick to my shimano entry level brakes with big rotors works for me 😂

MaMamsYo There are always exceptions to the rule but the main basis is that there is only two choices to pick from those three factors and money is always the deciding factor. Enve’s are strong and light but are extremly expensive sure they aren’t bomb proof but they do have warranty and its not easy to break a pair even if you tried. Stans flow rims is slightly cheaper and heavier but they are strong for some hard hitting use. I run Jetset 33mm downhill rims on my bike and they are cheap but are literally bomb proof but they weigh more than the entire earth, My old XC weinmann rims were competitively light and just as cheap but have the strength of an uncooked noodle in comparison to my DH Rims. Stans flow on the other hand are as strong as my Jetsets and are lighter than my weinmanns but those rims cost more than both combined. Its relative

Chasing Strava times. No 2 identical computers will measure a segment the same way, add smart phones, speed sensors, elevation etc into the mix and the numbers are all over the map. Use computers if they make you happy but try and have fun out there without accidentally bullying slower riders while in pursuit of a PR.

#1 Trend that sux: over-materialization of sport. This can be seen in your list partly based upon the importance of looks, such as "does this bike look like...", or "what do we think of oil slick". People post about taking two years to build their dream bike so that they can afford the most expensive components. Is the most expensive component going to make them better enough to compensate for the time they didn't ride? Even the headache from internal cable routing...... How much faster can I throw a pre-blead shimano brake on my bike than have to try to get my SRAM brakes working properly? I am not swapping the brakes because of internal cable routing. My cables are internal mostly because of looks. It is like my damn iMac - much less functional just so that it looks pretty when not using it. Lets get back to the making functionality the primary concern.
I dont even know what brand my pedals are and I'm sure as i break parts i will commit the cardinal sin of mixing brands of parts because i simply dont care what the bike looks like just how it performs and whats in my price range at the time

It's ridiculous really I've built a cheap hardtail probably cost me £250 components are comparable to some £1000 bikes so still according to elitists a cheap low end bike but I regularly come past £5000 poles and specialized I think expensive bikes are just made for there designed field when the average rider needs a bit of everything
Well sram can offer deals to builders with their drivetrain suspension and dropper package. Shimano can include a wheelset at best. And wheels are often one of the most overpriced parts anyway.
So when I started taking my on road bike through the wood land paths in 1989 it was essentially a gravel bike. To enable us to spend more time out and about and travel further we used bumbags. Then we added saddle bags to strap things to bikes as we needed more and wanted to avoid carrying a bag. Now, nearly 30 years later they seem to have been discovered as new things. This, is the definition of getting old. Seeing stuff that you just did get monetised many years later. Trends come in and out of fashion I suppose.

OIL SLICK: If you have a completely black bike and you choose to swap out the bolts for Titanium ones in that color, it's a nice touch. Everything beyond that really crosses the line for me.

That's a good trend. Sadly the trend in Colorado has been to set booby traps for mountain bikers, if not outright murder them. Some nutcase murdered a mountain biker with an axe last year in CO :( There were also several assaults against bikers on trails as well :(

I just recently got into biking a year ago and my first bike was a gravel bike. I use it to commute, under 15 Mile road rides, gravel, grass, light dirt trails. Basically everything a cross bike will do, but with a slightly more relaxed geometry. I'll probably never own a true road bike, as I use this to get to work/school and I enjoy mtb over road for fun rides. Using cross/gravel bike to commuted is so nice because I can cut thru grass or dirt shortcuts and not have to worry about my bike slipping out from under me. I run 38s on it.
agreed, "gravel bikes" have been around much longer then MTB, and should be called for what they are..cyclocross bikes. Calling it a trend is an insult to a sport thats much much older then mountainbiking.

The only real difference between a gravel bike & a cyclocross bike is 2 or 3 decades of technology. A modern mountainbike bears little resemblance to my first MTB back in 1989, but they're still mountainbikes. In the hills round here they're ALL pushbikes if you're going uphill. 😂

I have no problem with ebikes and think it's a great way for people to get on a bike if they were unable to before. That being said, I hate all this stuff about Ebike racing. I saw something about an Ebike EWS and thought it was the stupidest thing ever. The whole point of the EWS is to push a rider to the limits of their endurance and then force them to bomb down a mountain.
Yeah, the guys who rag on ebikes, but then ride a chairlift to the top of their DH run, total hypocrites haha. Most of us don't have ready access to lift assisted bike parks, and we have to earn our downhills the old fashioned way, the ebike just gets you more runs down the hill before you're too tired.

What gets me is the new 148mm boost rear, why exactly did they need a new standard just 2mm shy of a downhill standard we've had for more than 20 years?!? That was the point at which I said "no more!" It's just '80s style wide boys trying to bend everyone over, well they can bite me (though I'll probably smack them if they do 😂).
I'm 5 & a half foot with short arms & legs. I ride as small as I can get with 24 inch wheels, the shortest stem I can find and a decent rise (about 3 inches atm) bar. I need to keep my spine vertical or I can't ride at all, but my options are being whittled away by companies constantly changing standards. I have no use whatsoever for waggon wheels. The intelligent choice for companies that want to keep customer loyalty is make stuff to fit people, large frames longer & small frames shorter. There's not that much difference in standover these days so why not catch a greater market share by actually fitting more people? Common sense is not appropriately named any more. 😂
@YouandYourmum Got both 26" and 27.5" orange fives in the garage, 26 is by far the most fun however the bigger wheels do seem to help when climbing👍 Going for strava times I'd get the 2005 s-works stumpy out but that's a death trap according to specialized fork recommendations.
I think two by doesn't suck! A nice bashring to keep your pants from getting sucked into the chain and a nice light rear wheel not clogged up by huge pie plate cassettes and terrible chainlines!
Yeah, 2x10 on my XC hardtail does the job perfectly well. Admit 1x has helped frame designers with tire clearance and stronger suspension linkages though.
Its a mental game really. 2x is fine for chill rides but for active rides its better to run a drivetrain thats a lot more simple in the long run. 1x is an innovation i still love

The trend that sucks the most, is the trend towards not having any "standards" for anything any more. I mean, having a billion different wheel sizes, bottom brackets, axle types, axle lengths, steerers, headsets, freehubs, cassettes etc.. is just a massive pain in the arse.

It's completely pointless investing in a bike with the idea of upgrading / replacing parts as they wear out anymore as chances are by the time they need changing at least one of them will no longer be available in the same "standard" your bike uses. Not a problem if you can pull 5 grand out your ass every couple of years for a new bike, but for us mere mortals on real world wages being able to get new parts 3, 4 or 5 years down the line that actually fit is a pretty big deal. As for not hard, I challenge you to find a new set of 140mm+ travel 26" wheel sized forks with a straight 1 1/8th steerer and 9mm QR dropouts please. Cannondale has always done quirky fork designs. I remember the Cannondale headshocks back in the 90s, rigid style fork, with the shock built into the headstock.
Some other ideas: - Enduro bikes moving away from a bike you'd want as you're only bike. - Gravel bikes getting lazier and softer and fatter tyred - the speed and edginess of a cyclocross bike is what makes it great - basically a fast-feeling road bike with the toughness to take abuse off road is ideal imo. - Whips being the defining skill of a stylish rider - time for something new - MTB copying moto and calling it original
wider tires are now known for a fact to be faster rolling when it comes to riding bumpy surfaces. even up to like 2.4-2.5" so I'm not surprised they would be getting fatter. skinny and horribly weak tires are pretty much only going to be faster on paved roads. but personally, i think the entire cyclocross/gravel/road bike lycra wearing scene as a whole is ridiculous
The last one is the most true thing I have ever seen in a long time. Bicyclists say, " Oh We weRe FIrsT!" Yea, so? But, if you think about it, motocross, supercross, etc. were first to come out with most of the tricks that you see on bicycles, so techniqually, moto was first, for tricks at least.
Being an old scout I am guilty of carrying a small bike shop in my XL saddlebag. 2 inner tubes (on my tubeless wheels), multi-tool, CO2 x 2, tube patches, tire boot, multiple zip ties, chain link, nitril gloves, garbage bag (emergency rain coat), disc brake pads. It all weighs 2 pounds about 1 kilo.
Gravel Bikes are great. The key is having the trail wheels with your 40mm tires and then also a second wheel set with 28mm tires for road and commuting etc. For my Cannondale Topstone I even have a third wheel set for fast road riding with 25mm s. I can honestly say that my Conti 4 season 28s are the best tires for Miami riding and the Topstone rides great on the road. At the same time, this past Sunday, we rode in a Gravel event and the 40mm tires and trail wheels ate it up, mud, water, and elevated hard gravel. I still use my hard tail on actual mountain bike trails.
As someone over six foot who's old enough to remember the old fully-rigid MTB days, I can't say I miss the short, cramped bikes we used to have in the slightest. Long bikes and wide bars please!
I think gravelbikes have been around much longer then mountainbikes. It originally was called cyclocross, or Fieldcycling, and the first WC was in France in 1950. It started being a thing around 1910. Its a real, serious sports, especially in Europe, and particularly in Belgium and the Netherlands. We all love mtb ofc, but gravelbikes have earned their place in the offroading community I would say
Industry buzz words, designed to part people from their hard earned. I tried slack once, was a mistake. I put a Marzocchi Z150 fork on a small Orange MsIsle frame I picked up second hand. It was a beast when you pointed it downhill, but just getting from A to B was a nightmare - it was constantly trying to steer itself off to the side with the head angle being so 'slack'. I guess you do these things when you're young, got to learn somehow! 😂
One trend that I could do without: Bike companies listing their products as “revolutionary” and “game-changing” when it’s all marketing bull. If your product actually is gamechanging, people will know about it without you having to say it.
out door gear companies are rebranding them as "hip packs" or "waist packs"... personally, I augment mine by adding a removable toolbelt pouch. Anything I don't want stolen while away from the bike is kept on my person. Things I need immediate access to go in the pouch (keys, wallet, multitool, pen, spare change, my employee ID badge for work), while everything else goes in the zipped compartments in the waist pack (patch kit, rain pants, bike multitool, (if it starts raining, I move my wallet and phone into the waterproof compartment. Some companies make waist packs from DCF (formerly known as Cuben fiber) which is lightweight and waterproof.
Interesting, because outside of cycling, they still are a major fashion faux paux. Wearing one off a bike, might make you a bit too "stereotypical American tourist".

Definitely agree that considering $3K bikes "budget" need to stop. Unlike most commenters, I don't actually think they're overpriced (generally), rather they're mid-range bikes instead of budget; $2-3K might be on the low end for a decent full-sus, but there's many a decent hardtail available $500-1000, which is an actual budget bike. Also, to all the people complaining that you can buy a motorbike for the same price, no you can't. A $10K dirt bike is a budget dirt bike, equivalent to a $2-2.5K full-sus mtb. A $10K mountain bike is a top of the line racing machine, that just happens to be available to the general public. Its motorbike equivalent would be a supercross race bike, with specialised racing parts, and would cost $80-120K. Alternatively, if you want a car analogy instead, a $10-15K mtb is the bike equivalent of a Ferrari. Sure, you can buy a new Toyota for $20K, but that doesn't mean the Ferrari isn't worth $500K.
When in the front, it doesn't feel very good with your personal equipment sandwiched between the bag and top tube. That's why they're called FANNY packs.
I like polygon because they look different. I hope they bring fs2 and fs3 back for smaller travel bikes, Xquareone bikes are a little too expensive for most of us. My favourite is still the collosus t8. I love oil slick, it's also called rainbow titanium .

I have a chrome powdercoated Specialized Rockhopper with apehanger bars, and everything else oil slick, including a new pair of oil slick forks.........I just got the oil slick banana seat and sissy bar today.........Bike absolutely rocks, and is a blast to ride.......I set my own "style" standards.......Works for me.

completely agree about gravel bikes. they do look similar to old mtb only with a drop handlebar. but as a mountain biker not so happy going on roads, I love going for some fast gravel riding with some road riding in between. gravel bikes do not suck.
A trend I don't like is peoples shitting on how expensive everything is. $1000 now gets you a better bike than it ever did (accounting for inflation) and just because it says deore instead of XT doesn't make the modern bits worse. The upper end of bikes has gotten much more complex/expensive but you don't need to buy that. Bugatti doesn't make your Jetta more expensive and neither does S-Works make your Rockhopper more expensive.
Excactly. The $550 hardtail I ride would've been a 3000+ dollar race bike back in the mid-90s, 100mm travel forks, which are entry level now, were unheard of back then. A basic full suspension bike was in the price range of today's superbikes, especially if it was a carbon frame.
I think reliable is sometimes under rated. Where Ducati makes a high maintenance girlfriend (when it's good it's fantastic, but too many bad days). Honda and Toyota get us there, every time! I've had mountain bikes for nearly 30 years, and they are just getting better and better, in every way. How I wish I'd had any mainstream 2019 full suspension bike with dropper, 203mm disks and tubeless tyres back in 1990!

Fanny packs or bum bags are built into roadies' clothes so we are behind (the curve) here..or you use the smarter one, a good saddle bag which lowers your point of gravity and frees up your body movements..
Using fanny packs: low center if gravity, it's easier to drop all your sh°t during a break, and you can _wear_ the bag not having to carry it in your hand like a detached saddle bag when leaving your bike.
Gravel Bikes: a great trend! They make fantastic commuters and you can still road ride aggressively with the right tires. Definitely a great choice for versatility. If you already have a road bike and an xc bike, maybe just don't buy one?

29er wheels , the worst and senseless trend ever. Same goes for 27,5. Just greed of profit for global corporations, not more or less. 26 wheels were always sufficient and adequate in MTB section and still deliver significantly more useful advantages in comparison to 29er or 27,5 wheels. Large wheels belong to road, not MTB

That's an easy trend to ignore; just buy a bike costing half that and be happy. An aluminum hardtail with a mid-range fork will tackle all of the riding most people will ever do. Channels like this contribute to the problem, featuring professional athletes weekly doing what for most people would be once-in-a-lifetime trips. Entertaining as that is, most of the content in places like this is not really relevant to most of us.
Be a contrarian: ride a bike that works for the riding you do, even if it's not expensive. There are people out there shredding their local trails on single speed fully rigid bikes; that might not be for you, but if it works for them, think of all the maintenance and money they save, to say nothing of weight.
Putting worse components on the current years bike compared to the previous years bike and the price still goes up.

Random Ryder the ultra high end is nice but not that much better. Just buy a bike that you can afford and don’t be upset about what others are doing or buying. It’s not all about the bike, it’s about how you ride it. Also, there are pro deals available if you know the right people and a good secondhand market. If you bought a top end dirt bike/ sport bike like you can with mountain bikes, you’d also pay a tremendous amount. Not having an engine doesn’t make bicycles any less high tech.

Trevor P man, every time I call out “broke bitches” like you just did, I get absolutely torn a new one. Apparently i’m a rich asshole who has no sense of reality, and not a guy who likes riding nice bikes and drives around in an old reliable car, doesn’t go on vacations all the time, go out for meals all the time etc. Ironically I get the impression most of the people who tell me that probably make a lot more money than I do. I just think that the thing you should spend the most money on is the thing you love the most, but big box stores have taught the majority that bikes should be disposable and look good, but not necessarily to be reliable or safe, rather than buying an affordable really nice used bike.

My bike is only two years old but has a qr rear wheel and a straight steerer tube and isn't boost.
All three of those standards are at least 5 years old. My bike has qr and a straight steerer tube but I bought it new in 2019.
I was surprised my '13 Trek Cobia was so outdated for the same reasons you mentioned. I want to upgrade it to 1x12 but after I get done paying to replace all the incompatible parts to fit a QR frame, I could just buy another hardtail!

Biking is a lot like golf in that aspect. Several years back it was very hard to get anything under 1000usd that was decent. Nowadays there are decent starter bikes at around 200usd.
Saddly 7 moths later I see bikes in shops for around 15.999 € that's about 18.000$... And brakes FOR Each 900 bucks.... So 1800 bucks just for two brakes... Than you still need the levers an stuff wich cost another 200 each.... I stick to my shimano entry level brakes with big rotors works for me 😂

MaMamsYo There are always exceptions to the rule but the main basis is that there is only two choices to pick from those three factors and money is always the deciding factor. Enve’s are strong and light but are extremly expensive sure they aren’t bomb proof but they do have warranty and its not easy to break a pair even if you tried. Stans flow rims is slightly cheaper and heavier but they are strong for some hard hitting use. I run Jetset 33mm downhill rims on my bike and they are cheap but are literally bomb proof but they weigh more than the entire earth, My old XC weinmann rims were competitively light and just as cheap but have the strength of an uncooked noodle in comparison to my DH Rims. Stans flow on the other hand are as strong as my Jetsets and are lighter than my weinmanns but those rims cost more than both combined. Its relative

Chasing Strava times. No 2 identical computers will measure a segment the same way, add smart phones, speed sensors, elevation etc into the mix and the numbers are all over the map. Use computers if they make you happy but try and have fun out there without accidentally bullying slower riders while in pursuit of a PR.

#1 Trend that sux: over-materialization of sport. This can be seen in your list partly based upon the importance of looks, such as "does this bike look like...", or "what do we think of oil slick". People post about taking two years to build their dream bike so that they can afford the most expensive components. Is the most expensive component going to make them better enough to compensate for the time they didn't ride? Even the headache from internal cable routing...... How much faster can I throw a pre-blead shimano brake on my bike than have to try to get my SRAM brakes working properly? I am not swapping the brakes because of internal cable routing. My cables are internal mostly because of looks. It is like my damn iMac - much less functional just so that it looks pretty when not using it. Lets get back to the making functionality the primary concern.

Well sram can offer deals to builders with their drivetrain suspension and dropper package. Shimano can include a wheelset at best. And wheels are often one of the most overpriced parts anyway.

So when I started taking my on road bike through the wood land paths in 1989 it was essentially a gravel bike.
To enable us to spend more time out and about and travel further we used bumbags. Then we added saddle bags to strap things to bikes as we needed more and wanted to avoid carrying a bag.
Now, nearly 30 years later they seem to have been discovered as new things.
This, is the definition of getting old. Seeing stuff that you just did get monetised many years later.
Trends come in and out of fashion I suppose.

OIL SLICK: If you have a completely black bike and you choose to swap out the bolts for Titanium ones in that color, it's a nice touch. Everything beyond that really crosses the line for me.

That's a good trend. Sadly the trend in Colorado has been to set booby traps for mountain bikers, if not outright murder them. Some nutcase murdered a mountain biker with an axe last year in CO :( There were also several assaults against bikers on trails as well :(

Having been racing Cyclocross at the same time clunkers were skidding down Mt Tam, I definitely think 'Gravel Bikes" is BS marketing hype.
I just recently got into biking a year ago and my first bike was a gravel bike. I use it to commute, under 15 Mile road rides, gravel, grass, light dirt trails. Basically everything a cross bike will do, but with a slightly more relaxed geometry. I'll probably never own a true road bike, as I use this to get to work/school and I enjoy mtb over road for fun rides.
Using cross/gravel bike to commuted is so nice because I can cut thru grass or dirt shortcuts and not have to worry about my bike slipping out from under me. I run 38s on it.
agreed, "gravel bikes" have been around much longer then MTB, and should be called for what they are..cyclocross bikes. Calling it a trend is an insult to a sport thats much much older then mountainbiking.

The only real difference between a gravel bike & a cyclocross bike is 2 or 3 decades of technology. A modern mountainbike bears little resemblance to my first MTB back in 1989, but they're still mountainbikes. In the hills round here they're ALL pushbikes if you're going uphill. 😂
Gravel bikes are another stupid marketing ploy. You’re much better off with a decent XC mountain bike. Especially if you’re going to be riding on dirt roads. A gravel bike sounds ideal until you hit some wash board; and then you’ll be begging for suspension forks. Wash board is brutal and can stop you in your tracks. With a decent mountain bike, you can still ride on a road and then you have the versatility to ride off-road as well. Gravel bikes don’t have that versatility; they’re more of a one trick pony.
Those who dislike pedal assist ebikes but ride a motorized chair lift to get to the top of their downhill trails.
I have no problem with ebikes and think it's a great way for people to get on a bike if they were unable to before. That being said, I hate all this stuff about Ebike racing. I saw something about an Ebike EWS and thought it was the stupidest thing ever. The whole point of the EWS is to push a rider to the limits of their endurance and then force them to bomb down a mountain.
Yeah, the guys who rag on ebikes, but then ride a chairlift to the top of their DH run, total hypocrites haha. Most of us don't have ready access to lift assisted bike parks, and we have to earn our downhills the old fashioned way, the ebike just gets you more runs down the hill before you're too tired.

Im 6'4" & have long arms & legs. I like the super long bikes.
I'm 5 & a half foot with short arms & legs. I ride as small as I can get with 24 inch wheels, the shortest stem I can find and a decent rise (about 3 inches atm) bar. I need to keep my spine vertical or I can't ride at all, but my options are being whittled away by companies constantly changing standards. I have no use whatsoever for waggon wheels.
The intelligent choice for companies that want to keep customer loyalty is make stuff to fit people, large frames longer & small frames shorter. There's not that much difference in standover these days so why not catch a greater market share by actually fitting more people? Common sense is not appropriately named any more. 😂

@YouandYourmum Got both 26" and 27.5" orange fives in the garage, 26 is by far the most fun however the bigger wheels do seem to help when climbing👍 Going for strava times I'd get the 2005 s-works stumpy out but that's a death trap according to specialized fork recommendations.

I think two by doesn't suck! A nice bashring to keep your pants from getting sucked into the chain and a nice light rear wheel not clogged up by huge pie plate cassettes and terrible chainlines!
Yeah, 2x10 on my XC hardtail does the job perfectly well. Admit 1x has helped frame designers with tire clearance and stronger suspension linkages though.
Its a mental game really. 2x is fine for chill rides but for active rides its better to run a drivetrain thats a lot more simple in the long run. 1x is an innovation i still love
1X is much better for aggressive trail riding... Have you tried it? If you're riding is more flowy or XC, then 2X is okay.
1x makes for better rear suspension design. No more need to think about a bad compromise on how it will work based upon what the cranks are turning.

I definitely get fewer punctures than I did 20 years ago. I also think suspension has improved enough that neck strain is no longer the limiting factor on rides.
Gravel bikes are another stupid marketing ploy. You’re much better off with a decent XC mountain bike. Especially if you’re going to be riding on dirt roads. A gravel bike sounds ideal until you hit some wash board; and then you’ll be begging for suspension forks. Wash board is brutal and can stop you in your tracks. With a decent mountain bike, you can still ride on a road and then you have the versatility to ride off-road as well. Gravel bikes don’t have that versatility; they’re more of a one trick pony.
The trend that sucks the most, is the trend towards not having any "standards" for anything any more. I mean, having a billion different wheel sizes, bottom brackets, axle types, axle lengths, steerers, headsets, freehubs, cassettes etc.. is just a massive pain in the arse.

@@th_js Lol I understand them just fine, like OugaBooga said they just change too quickly (which kinda makes them not "standards" at all, hence my original point). It's completely pointless investing in a bike with the idea of upgrading / replacing parts as they wear out anymore as chances are by the time they need changing at least one of them will no longer be available in the same "standard" your bike uses. Not a problem if you can pull 5 grand out your ass every couple of years for a new bike, but for us mere mortals on real world wages being able to get new parts 3, 4 or 5 years down the line that actually fit is a pretty big deal.
As for not hard, I challenge you to find a new set of 140mm+ travel 26" wheel sized forks with a straight 1 1/8th steerer and 9mm QR dropouts please. This would have been a piece of piss a few years ago, but I don't seem to be able to find any now apparently due to my lack of understanding of standards, but as you find it so easy to find "compatible stuff" maybe you could source me a set? 🤣

I know I'll take heat, but I love the look of a Cannondale Lefty. It makes a classic geometry look new and interesting. Especially the new Ocho with the single crown. I'm in love! Fight me.
Cannondale has always done quirky fork designs. I remember the Cannondale headshocks back in the 90s, rigid style fork, with the shock built into the headstock.
We just bought a lefty cannondale a week ago. It's a monster of a bike :)

Some other ideas:
- Enduro bikes moving away from a bike you'd want as you're only bike.
- Gravel bikes getting lazier and softer and fatter tyred - the speed and edginess of a cyclocross bike is what makes it great - basically a fast-feeling road bike with the toughness to take abuse off road is ideal imo.
- Whips being the defining skill of a stylish rider - time for something new
- MTB copying moto and calling it original

wider tires are now known for a fact to be faster rolling when it comes to riding bumpy surfaces. even up to like 2.4-2.5" so I'm not surprised they would be getting fatter. skinny and horribly weak tires are pretty much only going to be faster on paved roads.
but personally, i think the entire cyclocross/gravel/road bike lycra wearing scene as a whole is ridiculous

The last one is the most true thing I have ever seen in a long time. Bicyclists say, " Oh We weRe FIrsT!" Yea, so? But, if you think about it, motocross, supercross, etc. were first to come out with most of the tricks that you see on bicycles, so techniqually, moto was first, for tricks at least.

Being an old scout I am guilty of carrying a small bike shop in my XL saddlebag.
2 inner tubes (on my tubeless wheels), multi-tool, CO2 x 2, tube patches, tire boot, multiple zip ties, chain link, nitril gloves, garbage bag (emergency rain coat), disc brake pads. It all weighs 2 pounds about 1 kilo.

Gravel Bikes are great. The key is having the trail wheels with your 40mm tires and then also a second wheel set with 28mm tires for road and commuting etc. For my Cannondale Topstone I even have a third wheel set for fast road riding with 25mm s. I can honestly say that my Conti 4 season 28s are the best tires for Miami riding and the Topstone rides great on the road. At the same time, this past Sunday, we rode in a Gravel event and the 40mm tires and trail wheels ate it up, mud, water, and elevated hard gravel. I still use my hard tail on actual mountain bike trails.

As someone over six foot who's old enough to remember the old fully-rigid MTB days, I can't say I miss the short, cramped bikes we used to have in the slightest. Long bikes and wide bars please!

I think gravelbikes have been around much longer then mountainbikes. It originally was called cyclocross, or Fieldcycling, and the first WC was in France in 1950. It started being a thing around 1910. Its a real, serious sports, especially in Europe, and particularly in Belgium and the Netherlands. We all love mtb ofc, but gravelbikes have earned their place in the offroading community I would say

Industry buzz words, designed to part people from their hard earned. I tried slack once, was a mistake. I put a Marzocchi Z150 fork on a small Orange MsIsle frame I picked up second hand. It was a beast when you pointed it downhill, but just getting from A to B was a nightmare - it was constantly trying to steer itself off to the side with the head angle being so 'slack'. I guess you do these things when you're young, got to learn somehow! 😂
One trend that I could do without: Bike companies listing their products as “revolutionary” and “game-changing” when it’s all marketing bull. If your product actually is gamechanging, people will know about it without you having to say it.
Fanny packs have caught on big time around here. more than half the riders i see have them now. and 90% are the new osprays. I love myn!

out door gear companies are rebranding them as "hip packs" or "waist packs"... personally, I augment mine by adding a removable toolbelt pouch. Anything I don't want stolen while away from the bike is kept on my person. Things I need immediate access to go in the pouch (keys, wallet, multitool, pen, spare change, my employee ID badge for work), while everything else goes in the zipped compartments in the waist pack (patch kit, rain pants, bike multitool, (if it starts raining, I move my wallet and phone into the waterproof compartment.
Some companies make waist packs from DCF (formerly known as Cuben fiber) which is lightweight and waterproof.

Definitely agree that considering $3K bikes "budget" need to stop. Unlike most commenters, I don't actually think they're overpriced (generally), rather they're mid-range bikes instead of budget; $2-3K might be on the low end for a decent full-sus, but there's many a decent hardtail available $500-1000, which is an actual budget bike.
Also, to all the people complaining that you can buy a motorbike for the same price, no you can't. A $10K dirt bike is a budget dirt bike, equivalent to a $2-2.5K full-sus mtb.
A $10K mountain bike is a top of the line racing machine, that just happens to be available to the general public. Its motorbike equivalent would be a supercross race bike, with specialised racing parts, and would cost $80-120K.
Alternatively, if you want a car analogy instead, a $10-15K mtb is the bike equivalent of a Ferrari. Sure, you can buy a new Toyota for $20K, but that doesn't mean the Ferrari isn't worth $500K.

I have a chrome powdercoated Specialized Rockhopper with apehanger bars, and everything else oil slick, including a new pair of oil slick forks.........I just got the oil slick banana seat and sissy bar today.........Bike absolutely rocks, and is a blast to ride.......I set my own "style" standards.......Works for me.

completely agree about gravel bikes. they do look similar to old mtb only with a drop handlebar. but as a mountain biker not so happy going on roads, I love going for some fast gravel riding with some road riding in between. gravel bikes do not suck.
A trend I don't like is peoples shitting on how expensive everything is. $1000 now gets you a better bike than it ever did (accounting for inflation) and just because it says deore instead of XT doesn't make the modern bits worse. The upper end of bikes has gotten much more complex/expensive but you don't need to buy that.
Bugatti doesn't make your Jetta more expensive and neither does S-Works make your Rockhopper more expensive.
Excactly. The $550 hardtail I ride would've been a 3000+ dollar race bike back in the mid-90s, 100mm travel forks, which are entry level now, were unheard of back then. A basic full suspension bike was in the price range of today's superbikes, especially if it was a carbon frame.

I think reliable is sometimes under rated. Where Ducati makes a high maintenance girlfriend (when it's good it's fantastic, but too many bad days). Honda and Toyota get us there, every time! I've had mountain bikes for nearly 30 years, and they are just getting better and better, in every way. How I wish I'd had any mainstream 2019 full suspension bike with dropper, 203mm disks and tubeless tyres back in 1990!

Fanny packs or bum bags are built into roadies' clothes so we are behind (the curve) here..or you use the smarter one, a good saddle bag which lowers your point of gravity and frees up your body movements..
Using fanny packs: low center if gravity, it's easier to drop all your sh°t during a break, and you can _wear_ the bag not having to carry it in your hand like a detached saddle bag when leaving your bike.

Gravel Bikes: a great trend! They make fantastic commuters and you can still road ride aggressively with the right tires. Definitely a great choice for versatility. If you already have a road bike and an xc bike, maybe just don't buy one?
Seems like a more capable alternative to a city bike for urban riding, on top of what people already use gravel bikes for.
