I just actually hurt my back last week from accidently pulling too much front brake. Oops. Didn't crash but the back strain was enough to put my next ride off for a week and a half. Watching this video to pick up tips. It will help for sure with the good posture tips.
Hey Kyle, I wanted to mention that the graphs on body positioning really help understand what you are trying to teach in each video. It's what makes your videos stand apart from others that I've seen. Oh and I vote for cornering in the next video.
Thats awesome! It takes sooo long to get all of those done but i think that is why people dont do them. I spend about 12-18 hours editing per video but hearing feedback like this makes me feel like its worth it :)

I knew nothing about bikes before the quarantine but with all the gyms closed, it got me to purchase a gravel bike and been riding on roads and light trails in Singapore for 3months now, almost every single day. I happened to run into yr channel while searching for trail riding on youtube and now I’m inspired to buy my 1st ever mtb and get into it at the age of 37. Wish me luck and pls continue to upload your instructions, they are the best I’ve seen, so detailed and inspirational!
Thank you so much, I wanted to demonstrate just how much front brake you can use and maybe inspire some people for what is possible with advanced braking!
I am a beginner in mtb and i am learning a lot from your videos guys , there are so many videos on youtube , trying to teach beginners the basics but this channel by far offers the most comprehensive and well detailed information , you guys are the best!
Kyle, you're a FANTASTIC teacher. Have you done any Gravel Bike videos. We need you in the GB world. Thanks to you and April for all your work and positivity.
Hey guys, Just wanted to say your videos are helping my wife feel more comfortable on the mtb bike. She watched all your video's and used them on our first bike park day at snow summit. I used to desert race Motos and it was fun hanging with friends but I've always wanted to do something with the wife and wanted her to find a hobby. Thats when one day she suggested we rent bikes in big bear and try mountain biking on the local trails. Man was she in love and so was I. I looked at her completely different she was 100% more attractive in my eyes. So seeing how much she loved it and was into it It prompted me to sell one of my spare dirt bikes and we spent a month doing research on different classes of bikes and settled on enduro cause we'd be mostly riding park with a little bit of trails. So we searched everyday on offer up for like 10 hours a day and finally bought us a pair of used bikes. A 16' Norco range 7.2 (mine) and a 2011 Specialized enduro comp (hers). In our 11 years together Its one of the best things we've done together and its honestly brought us closer together, it almost feels like we've fallen in love again. I recommend it for any couple out there thats adventurous type. She's 25 and I'm 27. Now our only problem is finding a baby sitter for our 1 y.o hahaha.
That is seriously one of the coolest comments I have ever seen! That makes both of us smile and the fact we can be a little part of that means the world to us :). We wish you both many more fun rides together! Thanks for being a part of our crew!
Hey Kyle, I was just telling my wife what a great teacher you are. You humanize the training. I’ve understood your methods because you really go over them in detail. Thanks for helping me better at riding
You really stand out compared to other MTB coaching videos - the theme is not new but every time I watch your video I learned something new and useful. Thanks!
You two have given me so much confidence. I only just got my MTB two weeks ago and live in North Vancouver where the trails are challenging. Thank you for making these and presenting everything so cleanly. You make a great team too.
And if April is like me, she will not feature in the bike wash video... I am a serious repeat offender of dissapearing as soon as the hose and wash comes out after a muddy ride 😅
Yes exactly, the daily clean and make ready for a ride. Seriously, I have a Mtb but I don't know how to do a daily maintenance. I did a maintenance once at the bikestore and it was riding much smoother after that.
Jumping is my vote. Awesome series especially for someone who is both learning himself and teaching his girlfriend. Was watching the series from the day 1, and today realized I am not subscribed to the channel, never felt that guilty in my life. Great work, keep it up !!!
Single handedly the best mtb tutorials out there. It makes sense, it's relatable, you show the logic behind the do's and don'ts and you are just a wonderful coach. Whatever video you guys make next, it will be great and educational and we will love it.
I’ve been really getting into mtb since summer started and have been going to the local trails with my friends several times a week! I just bought my first full-suspension last week, the cannondale habit 6! Discovered your channel through the trending page and I’m loving your videos! It’s been helping me learn proper technique! I’d love to see a collab between you and my all-time favorite, Seth’s Bike Hacks, some day!
Thats so cool! Thanks for joining our little crew Graham! we are so stoked that the videos are helping you and i promise we will do something with Seth eventually!
This was a game changer for me. Just the explanation of braking vs traction gave me WAY more confidence on my last ride - my instinct to brake was overcome with the facts of not braking provided me better traction.
Your videos are all super helpful, relatable, and inspiring for novice MTB riders! The focus on fundamentals, detailed explanations, diagrams, mistakes, fixes, small nuances that make a big difference -- all so helpful! As a woman, it's especially inspiring to see April's amazing improvements and growing confidence. Thank you both, and I can't wait for more content!
The way you explain things just makes it click for me. I've always been afraid to use my front brake for the fear of going over the bars, but now I want to try it on my next ride this weekend. Thanks. You two are awesome.
A vote for cornering. And thank you for these videos! It helps to see someone who knows what they are doing, but it is WAY more "oh, maybe I can do that, too" to see someone go from first attempt to amazing progress (you set the bar high, April!). Your style of coaching is one of the best I've seen on these videos, Kyle - easy to follow without talking down and your positive motivation is such a confidence builder.
Absolutely AMAZING instruction on braking. I went down some steep slopes today that I refused to go down before. I kept my heels down and back, I kept my arms straight, I used both brakes, and I used the front brake a little more when the back wheel began to feel like it was beginning to slide. I was totally in control the whole time. THANKS!
After watching several hundred mtn biking videos over the last 10 years, your videos are by far in the top 2-3 for clarity, analysis and description. Excellent combo of Kyle's expertise linked with showing a less skilled biker "how to". Many good and great bikers aren't so good at coaching. Good job Kyle and excellent attitude April for receiving feedback and instruction. I wish the internet and TH-cam was available when I started mtn biking 25 years ago - I'd be alot better rider now. I'm learning so much from you, while trying to break bad habits conditioned over decades. p.s. Nice nose wheelie at 11:28 coming down that rock roll
@@AprilRideMTB I'd love to see a similar video when rolling steep, loose surfaces (either dirt, loose gravel, and sandy slopes). Yeah I have a few of those where I bike. May only be 15 feet of more or less a chute (hence the loose bits). Too much rear and its a skid show and too much front will compress and plow the front tire into the soft terrain. I'm under the impression the really loose or soft slopes must be ridden faster?
You guys are so humble. I really appreciate your videos and have learn a whole lot with them. Thank you very much for taking the time to do this videos!
I'm so glad you pointed out about the differences between NA and other country's brake levers at the start, because I was getting super confused when I saw you were pulling what was to me the wrong lever..... Thank you!!
Yes I have been afraid to do some of the more steeper hills on the trails because I didn't know/was afraid of falling! At 32 years of age and with 4 kids I cannot afford to injure myself lol this is so valuable! Thanks!
You guys are absolutely killing it. Such great advice, clearly explained so that I always walk away with *understanding*, not just *knowing* what steps to execute (that way my instincts on the trail come more naturally, I’m not in a state of constantly reminding myself as I ride). It sets your content apart from every other channel. So sick. Loving it. Keep going! ❤️
I did it!! I went mountain biking near Zion National Park and I mastered going downhill! Thank you again for this awesome video! 😎 No more walking my bike downhill and others having to wait on me!
Watched this video on Sunday before riding a new trail down here in Cape Town South Africa. Your advice like in all your videos is spot on. It is by far one of the best and I've watched all the popular channels. The detailed explanations always creates those "Eureka, lightbulb moments". We have close to 7000 members in our club and I know the Beginners have learnt tons from your series of videos. Thank you for the effort you guys put in for the benefit of riders world wide.
I’ve been pedaling for years, but mostly asphalt, farm and ranch roads, and easy mountain bike trails. I’ve recently started trying harder trails, and your info could literally be saving (if not my life) me from a trip to the ICU. Thanks!
Wow. These videos are just super awesome! I was clapping watching April roll down that rock! The confidence she gets from getting such a patient coach is amazing. Kyle really makes me want to improve on my techniques. So inspiring. Thank you thank you thank you! Peace & love from Malaysia!
Every video you two do, I try your techniques and immediately get better. This format is excellent for learning solid fundamentals. Excellent teaching with an excellent student. Well done!
Since I ride motorcycles - we always switch the front brake to the Right - since the Clutch is usually the Left... Love your Videos! I like the Scale - 50% Brake 50% Traction :) Very True! Sometimes just skidding is going to make you go faster... as you showed!
That does make more sense and I tried that at first since I came from moto too, but for some reason I just had Kyle switch it back to North American MTB standard. I don't seem to have any problems going back and forth from moto to mtb. -April
I'm used to the power of front brake stoppage from riding motorcycle but the "braking position" / "joint stack" is a fundamental I've never considered and it will be a game changer in my (braking) riding!!
Thanks so much for this video! The tips are top notch! Remember, any time you go down really steep stuff, use both brakes and favour your front brake so that you reduce the risk of sliding! Great video!
Kyle you have exception teaching skills.. April learns quickly, she rocks actually, and has a nice smile all this is why your channel is growing quickly. Thanks.
I have been riding for a long time and these videos gives me a new perspective of the things I am doing right and wrong and how to be a better rider. Thanks Kyle and April!
This is an excellent lesson and way to describe braking. The hill brake timing is almost identical to how we learnt on a motorbike as the theory is the same. Some extras - in the UK to pass your motorbike license you need to learn to emergency stop going faster than 50kmph and the examiner is looking for two things, 1) how quick you stop based on where your front wheel stops and 2) rebound from your front suspension. At those speeds (straight line) it's about progressive braking with about 90% of braking from front brake and the rear brake only used for final 10% to stabilise the bike as you stop. Front brake is king.
Agree with everyone here giving you kudos! You sir, are an excellent teacher! I am a Radiography apprentice at the moment and it takes a an unique individual to teach and not just instruct. Good job dude! April, you are great student with a lot of courage! Keep it up guys! You are refreshing me in some areas and making me "ooooh", "Aaahhh" and "WOOT, WOOT!" when April succeeds! Thank you! Can't wait for her first race!
Awesome! Just had this conversation with my LBS -a newer bike was in with absolutely no rear pads left and 75% of the front pads still left. He said time for a clinic...well you just put that clinic on! Thank you. Jumping is my vote!
Thank you, the heel drop has been such a game changer for me from these videos. I wish I took the tip more seriously from Kyle when he first told me haha
Your tutorials are so good! And being so cute doesn't hurt of course! Glad to see Performance sponsoring you, you guys deserve it! I'm scared of jumping myself but every one I've watched has taught me something! Keep it up please!
Thank you both so much for providing this content! I tried my first "blue run" MTB trail today (age 52!) and i was trying to go really slow just relying on my rear brake because I was scared of going over the handle bars if i touched the front brakes. I ended up wiping out twice through skidding and going too fast. This video made it really easy to see where i was gong wrong and how to fix it. Great job!
Ive been so afraid of my front brakes after some over the bars crashes! This was really helpful. Cornering is my vote. Thank you, and good job April!! :)
watching your videos make me feel i'm in an online class (paid)... while drooling because I don't have an MTB just yet =) definitely the best MTB tutorials in YT!
I watch a lot of MTB youtube videos, no where have I seen braking explained as well as Kyle does it here. I am certain that this will help a lot of us weekend warriors. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. Jumping Please.
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. The techniques are well explained, and it’s good to see the progression of April’s skills. Great format, I always look forward to the next one!
April and Kyle, thank you very much for being such awesome Content Creators! This video saved my rear the day before yesterday. I was coming down a hill high-speed (40 Km/h), an asphalt road that we share with cars. The tips in this video helped to navigate safely a the the curves on this road. Thanks for making it!
Kyle & April, Thank you for your great videos! My husband and I just came back from riding in Colorado. We both used many of your tips and adjusted our brake levers so that our arms were "stacked". I took up riding a couple years ago and of the lessons, I have seen or taken, yours are by far the most thorough. Congratulations on the growth of your channel! I look forward to watching all of your future videos!
Video Request: Chain care. - How often do you lube it? - How often do wash it off with hose or remove it and soak it? - What do you clean it with? - And how do you do all these things? - AND all the other critical parts too. What to you do to keep your bike always in top shape for big rides?
April is just killing it! Nice job. Amazing what the front brake can do especially in a straight line. My vote is for cornering next. I went riding with my daughter at Beacon Hill in Spokane on Thursday and we talked about looking through the exit and turning the shoulders into it and the grip and flow through a berm is mind blowing. I know what to do it's just getting the body to follow the brain!
I'm really good at braking. I've broke my pedals, my front wheel, my saddle and even my wrist. Great work guys!!
Hahaha oh man, we both laughed out loud at that one. Thanks for the comment and the smiles haha!

Cornering please!
NAILED IT!! Kyle I think you may be training the next women's downhill champion.. She learns FAST!
Cornering, including steep but flowy berms :) Also doing it slowly to build confidence
ok noted for sure when we do a cornering video, i was thinking it might even need to be a 2 part cornering video to do it right haha
I’d like to see cornering and especially on off camber turns as this is where I often struggle to maintain speed and control.
Ok sweet i will take a note and cover that in the video we do too! Thanks for watching!
I'd add cornering (and braking technique) on loose terrain aswell!
Yeah, on some natural off camber cornering (not builded burms).
That would be awesome! Struggling to find confidence in grip while cornering
Perhaps a separate video, but including how to hit switchback (down or up?) would also be cool

I’d like to see cornering specifically flat of loose corners! Good video
Concur with this. Flat switchbacks that are really loose. I am always afraid i'm going to dump my bike if i go too low.
Great suggestion! Thank you!
The terrain where I ride is 90% loose, so I'll upvote this as well!

I am a beginner in mtb and i am learning a lot from your videos guys , there are so many videos on youtube , trying to teach beginners the basics but this channel by far offers the most comprehensive and well detailed information , you guys are the best!
Great to hear! 😊
Cornering is my vote!
Ok one more for cornering! Thanks Rachel!
These videos are one of the best MTB videos on TH-cam. Start with the basics, and go in depth
Glad you like them!
I always knew that I underuse my front brakes (feels safer), I just had no idea how much. Thanks a lot! Great job April, you made it look soooooo easy
Thanks for watching Jake! Hopefully you can practice that drill and then feel like a champ on the trail!!!
Oh yes, I'm walking way too many sections at Big Bear. Not anymore!!!!!!!
Kyle, you're a FANTASTIC teacher. Have you done any Gravel Bike videos. We need you in the GB world. Thanks to you and April for all your work and positivity.
Maybe one day! That would be super fun :)
Definitely cornering! Particularly at bogus on those loose berms. My wife fell and she would love to see how you teach April the right way.
Noted! Thanks for the idea Jay! Tell your wife that we hope shes ok!
And I like how you give hearts to everyone
Hey Kyle, I was just telling my wife what a great teacher you are. You humanize the training. I’ve understood your methods because you really go over them in detail. Thanks for helping me better at riding
A few years ago, when I was first told that the front brake was important, I was dumbfounded, but since then I use my front brake a lot.
Yeah its definitely not the most intuitive right away. Thanks for watching Sebastien!
I learned in the 80s the rear brake makes the front wheel heavier while the front is for stopping.
You really stand out compared to other MTB coaching videos - the theme is not new but every time I watch your video I learned something new and useful. Thanks!
Great to hear, thank you! 😊
Obviously jumping, great job April!!!
You two have given me so much confidence. I only just got my MTB two weeks ago and live in North Vancouver where the trails are challenging. Thank you for making these and presenting everything so cleanly. You make a great team too.
Thanks so much Greg :)
I am newbie when it comes to mtb but i am learning alot from you, keep up the good work! 🔥
Awesome! Thank you! We really appreciate you watching the vids!
Blown away at how good you are at breaking down these skills. Thanks for making these videos, I'll watch whatever you put out!
I am also amazed at how well Kyle is at coaching! That is why I wanted us to make these videos and share it with everyone :) -April
Can you do a video "how to clean your bike" pleas
Yeah that is a great idea!
Yes. A basic daily ride clean. Not the ocd, $100 worth of chemicals please ( unless that’s what u do).
Video request: how to clean your bike, and if I can use a hose on the bearings and linkages
Haha thanks for finally making it official! We really appreciate you guys!
I really needed this! Thanks.
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching!
Kyle & April - Ride Mtb Oh btw I vote for jumping.
Single handedly the best mtb tutorials out there. It makes sense, it's relatable, you show the logic behind the do's and don'ts and you are just a wonderful coach. Whatever video you guys make next, it will be great and educational and we will love it.
Happy to help! Thank you so much for watching and commenting it really does go a long way with supporting us in this adventure :)
Jumping is always a great topic, but cornering seems a better topic after braking. I'm here either way. Great job to you both!
Ok that is three votes for cornering! I think we are seeing a trend haha :) Thanks for the comment!
I'd love to hear some comments/advice on seat height. I find its a little hard to have optimal seating for xcountry and steep descents with braking.
Yeah i totally agree and we have a seat position video scheduled for mid next month! :)
Get hold of a dropper post. I bet you'll never want to ride without one afterwards!.
This was a game changer for me. Just the explanation of braking vs traction gave me WAY more confidence on my last ride - my instinct to brake was overcome with the facts of not braking provided me better traction.
Great to hear Bobby!
OH man, all these little techniques...might have saved me from my nick name "Matt O.T.B. (over the bars)"
Haha oh no! Maybe you can rebrand yourself! we will do a video on stoppies and then when you get good at them they will call you stoppie Matt!
Glad you like them! Thank you so much Elsa :)
1:20 naughty laugh😉
Really good explanations for regular riders. Love April's attitude!
Thank you so much!!!
THANKS!
Nice work! That is so rad! We love hearing stories like this :)
Thanks so much Steven :)
Our pleasure! Thank you for the kind comment and for watching 😊
I'm so glad you pointed out about the differences between NA and other country's brake levers at the start, because I was getting super confused when I saw you were pulling what was to me the wrong lever..... Thank you!!
Haha thanks Pete!
Yes I have been afraid to do some of the more steeper hills on the trails because I didn't know/was afraid of falling! At 32 years of age and with 4 kids I cannot afford to injure myself lol this is so valuable! Thanks!
That’s so cool to hear! Thanks for watching and commenting it means a lot to us :)
Your videos are valuable to a beginner like me......They help a lot! That you smile and are so upbeat makes them even better. Thank you.
Thank you!!! 😁
So sick. Loving it. Keep going! ❤️
Thank you that means a lot! We are trying our best to keep it informative! Thanks for watching
I did it!! I went mountain biking near Zion National Park and I mastered going downhill! Thank you again for this awesome video! 😎 No more walking my bike downhill and others having to wait on me!
I went on my first MTB ride this weekend. So far I have hit every mistake in the video. This is incredibly useful and relatable. Thank you guys!
So glad to hear this video is helpful! The first time I rode at a park I went over the bars twice, too much front brake haha -April
That is so cool to hear! Thank you guys so much for watching and letting us know that the vids are helpful it makes us both smile so much :)
Thank you, glad we can help inspire!
Every video you two do, I try your techniques and immediately get better. This format is excellent for learning solid fundamentals. Excellent teaching with an excellent student. Well done!
Thank you Dan!
I watched this video ages ago and it helped me negotiate steep loose-rocked tracks so much better. Thx
Thanks so much for this video! The tips are top notch!
Remember, any time you go down really steep stuff, use both brakes and favour your front brake so that you reduce the risk of sliding!
Great video!
Yeah you have it down! Thanks so much for the comment!
Kyle you have exception teaching skills.. April learns quickly, she rocks actually, and has a nice smile all this is why your channel is growing quickly. Thanks.
Wow, thanks! Yeah we are really excited people are liking the videos :)
I have been riding for a long time and these videos gives me a new perspective of the things I am doing right and wrong and how to be a better rider.
Thanks Kyle and April!
Great to hear it helped you Juan!
Your tutorials are amazing and is great to see someone learning along the way. Plus you two are the cutest couple!
Thank you!!!
Thank you so much for the kind comments to us both 😊
Awesome! Just had this conversation with my LBS -a newer bike was in with absolutely no rear pads left and 75% of the front pads still left. He said time for a clinic...well you just put that clinic on! Thank you.
Jumping is my vote!
Haha thats rad! Glad you enjoyed it!
Many Thanks to both of you. a} inspired to recover my MTBing from semi retirement b} had no idea abot heel dropping and elbow locking
Thank you, the heel drop has been such a game changer for me from these videos. I wish I took the tip more seriously from Kyle when he first told me haha
I'm legit impressed with how informative your videos are
Thank you so much Carlos!!! 😊
I just got my first mtb last month and man these videos came out at the perfect time to get an uncoordinated know-nothing riding haha thanks!!
That’s so awesome! Thank you for watching Evan!
Your tutorials are so good! And being so cute doesn't hurt of course! Glad to see Performance sponsoring you, you guys deserve it! I'm scared of jumping myself but every one I've watched has taught me something! Keep it up please!
Thank you so much Ben!
Thats awesome to hear that this made sense :) thank you so much for watching and for the comment :)
Kyle you are an excellent instructor, you can see from vid to vid how April is gaining confidence. Excellent job.
Thanks Miguel!
watching your videos make me feel i'm in an online class (paid)... while drooling because I don't have an MTB just yet =)
definitely the best MTB tutorials in YT!
Thank you so much!
These are the best coaching for mtb! I now understand what I've been doing wrong and my confidence is so much better. Thanks guys.
Happy to help! That makes us feel good to hear comments like that :)
I watch a lot of MTB youtube videos, no where have I seen braking explained as well as Kyle does it here. I am certain that this will help a lot of us weekend warriors. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. Jumping Please.
Thanks Slade! Its been really fun making these for you guys :)
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. The techniques are well explained, and it’s good to see the progression of April’s skills. Great format, I always look forward to the next one!
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching!!
I Loved it!!!! As for jumping or cornering, I'd vote for cornering!
Ok thats awesome to know! We have 4 so far for cornering!
Kyle, you are so much better at explaining things that most of the superstars out there. Love it!
Glad you think so, I appreciate that!
Thank you so much! I am glad our videos have helped you already 😊
Video Request: Chain care.
- How often do you lube it?
- How often do wash it off with hose or remove it and soak it?
- What do you clean it with?
- And how do you do all these things?
- AND all the other critical parts too. What to you do to keep your bike always in top shape for big rides?
That is a great idea will! I promise we will do a maintenance video in the next couple weeks!
Thats so awesome! Yeah i am excited about the cornering video but I am just nervous about how to put it all together the right way
@@AprilRideMTB Whatever you put together will be great!
