  • The modern hardcore hardtail is an incredibly capable steed, but can it really be as fast as a full suspension super bike? To find out, we pitted Nukeproof pro enduro racer Elliott Heap against amateur rider and GMBN crew member Ed Fletcher for a classic downhill race on Dyfi Bike Park's Race Track. As the age-old question goes, is it the bike or the rider? Prepare for huge jumps, a crash and some gnarly steep tech!

      Well, there's always very good deals to be had buying used bikes. Best bang for the buck right there. I've bought all my bikes used so far (and those have been awesome) but now I'm building my first bike with all new part and yes, it's expensive as hell and it's not very sensible in any way but just wanted to build my dream bike.

      I have this conversation with people trying to get them into the hobby. I think there is confusion for people between sport and leisure. Leisure is doing the thing but at a comfortable level. Sport is pushing yourself beyond the threshold of control repeatedly. The budget suspension on a $1000 Polygon will let you have plenty of fun. But chances are it also has budget wheels, cranks, bearings, etc. Neither you nor the bike is going to be happy repeatedly exceeding its limits. Compared to a sport entry bike that will put up with way more abuse before breaking down or needing service in comparison. A Judy just isnt made to have the same abuse cycle a Lyric or Fox 36 is. Enduro sealed bearings are going to outlast cheap sealed bearings many times over. My $3600 Nukeproof Mega I got on sale at CRC in 2020 is worth more than the sum of its parts and its blindingly obvious if you back to back ride budget to high end bikes down properly rough trails. For the average enthusiasts something in the $2-4000 range is going to be something they love getting on and develop the love for riding that keeps them coming back.

    The most surprising result for me was just how close the pro times were for Enduro vs Hardtail. This seems somewhat in contradiction to many reviews which seem to rattle on about sacrificing climbing ability to get a better descending bike when the descending difference can be so minimal in the right hands. But I guess there are other things to consider, such as the video rightly pointed out, and that is comfort. It might be possible to descend nearly as fast on a hardtail vs full sus. but you're going to take a beating. I guess the video message is clear: regardless of the type of bike you want a Nukeproof is what you need - hahahaha!

      Thank you so much, Juluis! Elliott's riding is in another league! You really respect pro mountain bikers when you attempt to go anywhere near as fast as they do. 😂 All the best and safe riding! Ed @GMBN

    Top end tech will allow a pro who can already get 90% out of the equipment get closer to 100%, they won't allow an amateur who can get perhaps 70% out of the equipment get closer to 90%

    43 seconds just shows the difference a pro can make. I raced in the late 90s against Pros on a GT Lobo, and once came near the 8th place time. Luck!

    I mean a pro knows how to pick lines faster and knows what part of the bike to make the most use of, like positioning especially with a hard tail, (all this was said prior to watching full video just wanted to see the outcome)

    Wait wait. There is a distinction between a "cheap" bike vs "affordable" bike. That Scout is not a cheap bike by any means. It's an affordable and quite capable bike. "Cheap" should be reserved for walmart bikes or similar.

    Here in Galicia we say " vale máis o Indio co cabalo" which roughly translates to " its not about the horse but the rider", I can't give the literal translation or else I will be banned but you got the gist of it. :) so hone your skills and forget about the latest and greatest

    That why I ride a hardtail, it's not the bike it's the rider and I'm fully of the understanding that I'm the slowest part of my bike.

  • @YoungDoug13
    @YoungDoug13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Does having a heavy bike with cheaper wheels and drivetrain really make that much difference on a DH? Obviously fork quality and the fact that it's a hard tail matter, but most of the "budget" stuff was kind of a moot point.
    Let's see a budget vs baller XC race.

    Wouldn't been nice to see the amateur do a run on the hardtail as well to see the performance gains an amateur gets vs a pro. Most people say the average joe doesn't need a high end bike because they won't ever use it to it's full potential but I bet money the amateur would've seen much more than a 6 second time savings on the full suspension compared to a hardtail. The average joe has the most to gain from equipment because they aren't using anything to it's full potential.

    The better comparison would be to have the amateur rider do a timed lap on a really cheap bike then again on an expensive one. This would determine if an upgrade in bike would help the average rider improve their game.
