Great advice for the UK-it's absolutely disgusting what the DVLA are doing!!! To think they actually work for us.
Unfortunately, camper status matters in Italy. if you want to re-register your vehicle in Italy-as we do, you may have great problems trying to register it as a camper vehicle if it isn't already classified as a camper in the UK. We found out the hard way and are still trying to get our camper van registered to drive after 4 long years😭
(which is needed if you want to drive such a vehicle in Italy and probably much of the rest of Europe) as the changes made to update it to camper van are seen as modifications
our Mazda Bongo which is beautiful and has a pop top roof

Very good info. Biggest thing is the high top roof: am amazed though as genuine VW ocean etc are pop top roofs & yet classified as leisure vehicle?! Very odd.

Useful video but I think you have missed the biggest question debated online which is speed limits!

Hi Lee. I should have added that in, I may do a quick follow up on that. But it’s really straight forward . Any SWB T28 or T30 camper is class 4 so they can adhere to class 4 limits (national speed limit) regardless of classification. A T32 is a class 7 so it will need to adhere to class 7 laws which is 10mph less on certain roads, unless it’s registered as a leisure vehicle

@@HighlifeCampersUK Would that need to be reclassified from panel van to van with windows to apply?

Hi Paul. The only VW Transporter that has any chance of being classified as a leisure vehicle is a high top van. If it’s not a high top (not pop-top) plus the other criteria it won’t get reclassified regardless of having windows or not. And as I said in my video, there is no benefit to being classified as a leisure vehicle, makes very little difference.

@@HighlifeCampersUK not quite as I understand it. You cannot get it classed as a motor home/ leisure vehicle but you can get it reclassified as a ‘van with windows’ (mine was) which ‘legally’ allows you to travel at national speed limits, as a stock panel van commercial speed limits apply I.e 50mph in a 60 zone etc. it appears that some people have still got tickets, usually by automated cameras but have successfully got them revoked by providing evidence of the conversion. Lots of confusion hence my comment about including it in the video.

@@HighlifeCampersUK Ah ok. So am I right in assuming then that SWB T28 & T30 panel vans, none converted, are subject to normal car speed limits? I’ve read in a few places just saying ‘vans’ are subject to the 50, 60, 70 limits, but it sounds like a van under 3t is classed as a car?

DVLA are still playing games, high top vans (like mine) are still getting refused even though they are the very same base vehicle which are used by 'professional' builders which do get accepted. This is even after the Ombudsman got involved and told the DVLA that it needs to change it's ways. Links in my own video about this.
It isn't the DVLA that decides what is a motor caravan or not, the definition of a Motor Caravan is given in the Type Approval Regulations 1979 reg.2 this states that:-
    "motor caravan" means a motor vehicle which is constructed or adapted for the carriage of passengers and their effects and which contains, as permanently installed equipment, the facilities which are reasonably necessary for enabling the vehicle to provide mobile living accommodation for its users;
There is no reference to the need for high tops, windows or stupid graphics!

I had a T5.1 camper van which I very easily had reregistered as a campervan back in, I think, 2019. All that the DVLA wanted from me were photos of the interior. It was NOT a high top and had a pop top. Not sure where you got your information from 🤔

The info is from the DVLA as explained in detail in the video. It's not 2019 anymore.

  • @trindermon

does any of this change with regards to a militant vosa check? (does that even happen?) i've always wondered if its a panel van and you are plodding down the M6 you can be asked to head off to a weigh bridge and such.

Hi Jacek, you don’t need to inform the DVLA, just your insurance company

It makes no difference to the road tax, £320 for the year.
