While the Temptations and Supremes rehearsed for an joint appearance on the "Ed Sullivan Show," David Ruffin became angry, because the set featured several boxes with the names "The Temptations" and "The Supremes," all across them but if those names came up thirty times, the name "Diana Ross" came up sixty times. Worst of all, her name was overlapping not just the Supremes name but the Temptations too. So visually, you had something like, "Diana Ross Temptations-Diana Ross Supremes and there was nothing the Tempts could do about it. The real problem started when the two groups started rehearsing and realized the Tempts songs and the Supremes songs were arranged in different keys and Diana could not sing in David's key. As usual, after the rehearsal Diana started complaining about the whole thing and when the Tempts left and came back to rehearsal the next day they all knew she must have run and called Berry Gordy because everything had been changed. Overnight, somebody had transposed the Tempts charts into Diana's key and rehearsed the band to play the new charts. The guys were shocked. They hadn't worked with Diana in a while and they weren't used to seeing her treated almost like a solo star with her own separate staff and everything. Little did they know, Diana had the nerve to be upset because she had the audacity to think that the Tempts were riding her coattails. David whispered to Mary Wilson, "Is this what goes on all the time?" "Yes, said Mary, "she always gets her way." Later, before the actual show, David told me. "Watch, Tony. When I get up there tonight, I'm gonna give that phony wig-wearing bitch a run for her money." I didn't know what he was planning but I knew David could murder Diana vocally and he did. He did exactly what he was supposed to do as far as his dance steps and movements were concerned but when it came time to singing, he did a whole lot of ad libbing and completely threw Diana off. Diana was livid by the end of the show.
I am glad that David stood his ground. The Temptations were successful in their own right and didn't need Diana's bony behind! She was a piece of work! I never like Diana Ross!

This was the talk of us seventh graders in school the next day. Cindy was awesome but damn I missed not seeing Florence up there. David would soon be gone and by the time the groups first tv special in December 1968 both Cindy and new Temptation Dennis Edwards were sensational stepping in Florence Ballard and David Ruffins shoes. I often wonder what the show would’ve been like had they both not let their inner issues and problems interfere with their careers within their group.

I heard in rehersals leading up to the show that Diana purposely changed all the Supremes songs to a higher key for this performance so that she could outshine David Ruffin, little did she know David had true range in his voice, when he found out what she did he got pissed then decided to show her up on her own songs, and he killed it!!! He completely beat Diana at her own game.

They both did a good job. Changing the key was the right decision for the performance. I felt like when it comes to harmonies nobody held a candle to the temptations...nobody they just sound like 5 tall angels...and their dancing always shined bright. Thats why berry chose them to add some excitement to The surpremes who brought the mainstream appeal. Diana is a great showmen but Nobody comes close to showmen ship then the Temptations at motown. Jackson 5 a close second.

At 3:35, Ross looked back to cue David as she stopped singing words and sung only ooo’s and ahh’s, so he hurried up to the front as to appear seamlessly, to sing THAT SONG THE HARDEST out of all the songs he sung; he even strained to hit that higher note and exerted himself into an obvious sweat under a minute, on a song she aced. I already stated he did well, but did not out sing her. She adapted her voice and aced his song. That’s not to say, she out sung him either. She just aced his song! PERIOD!

no knock on the Supremes, but this clearly shows they couldn't hold a candle to the Temptations as far as performing.
You're entitled to your opinion but I think you're wrong. Everyone has their own taste.
I felt like when it comes to harmonies nobody held a candle to the temptations...nobody they just sound like 5 tall angels...and their dancing always shined bright. Thats why berry chose them to add some excitement to The surpremes who brought the mainstream appeal. Diana is a great showmen but Nobody comes close to showmen ship then the Temptations at motown. Jackson 5 a close second.

This one of the main reasons I like Diana’s (soul) singing. She can merely stick to the music, while producing a quality sound and interpreting the music the way it's written of all types. This goes to show you that you don’t have to scream, yell, strain and over sing like so many R&B singers just to be impressive. Just sing the song!

That was a great performance. You can STOP the Temptations choreography on I'm Losing You. The Supremes also got to let go of their little lightweight choreography and bust a few real moves. Diana Ross always could dance.
