STF MEMBERSHIP UPDATE
All STF huts charge you 40 SEK if you want to use the facilities during daytime since 2021 as a member and 60 SEK without membership. So if you are not planning to use the huts frequently or the Mountain Stations and if you are travelling with a tent, the membership isn't worth it anymore for the Kungsleden alone.
2:22 and yet another reason is that by going from South to North you can keep the sun behind your back. That's good for two reason: 1) if you have a solar charger on your back pack you get plenty of energy during the hike hours. 2) the sun won't blind you and you can enjoy the view instead to suffer from the sun. 3) the sun won't burn your face as from North to South.
I was about to write that but i thougt maybe more people think about this. Yey!

I remember, last summer .. or maybe 2 years ago...whatever, there was a problem with the water in the Jotunheimen national park (Norway). Some people got sick. You say "Don't bring a water filter". I say...bringing one is precaution. 99 times you drink the water and you will be fine, but once you get unlucky, you can get VERY sick. It's not worth it. If you are alone in the middle of nowhere, and you get so sick that you can not move...it's no joke. I know that the water in Sweden and Norway is fine and I'd be fine to drink it without filtering but Never know what's un the water further up. A dead animal or dropping. A filter is really not heavy, but the lack of it can cause big trouble...even though the chance is small. I think it's more about the safety than about leaving it at home for lower weight.

I didn't bring a map either. It worked out fine. It's nice to have an idea of the next section of trail. Usually you will find some maps on boards at huts or in the villages.When it is cold you don't want to camp up on the mountain. When the mosquitos are killing you it might be the other way around.You can find out what lies ahead of you without bringing a map, but you need to do a bit of research. If a sighn is missing, just follow the most worn out track.
I feel inspired! Have a cabin in hemavan så this needs to happen at some point!

Alternatief voor het boek, 'Kungsleden', Michael Hennemann, Conrad Stein Verlag. Klein licht boekje, bevat de relevante informatie. In het Duits! Grappig ding, de eerste keer dat ik de Noordelijke Kungsleden liep had de STF nog van die apparaten die een kopie-afdruk van je kredietkaart maakten. Handtekening erop en betaald! Dat was natuurlijk in de oude Steentijd.
Only three crossings need payment and i paid them all by card.I bought food in Jäkvik and paid it by card. I didn't spend any cash on the trail, but I didn't break my back carrying some bank notes as a back up.
Hi Floor! I'm thinking about hiking the Kungsleden this summer and really enjoy your videos! I saw in some video that you too are using contact lenses. I was wondering how you manage lenses on hikes? I take mine out every night and wash my hands before putting them in in the morning. Did you bring special soap to use out in nature, or did you keep your contacts in all night?
Hoi Floor, leuk filmpje van de Kungsleden en goede tips! Ik wil hem in Augustus ook gaan lopen van zuid naar noord. Ik heb nog een paar vraagjes: wat is de makkelijkste en relatief snelste manier om in Hemavan te komen? Ik wil zo’n 10 augustus vertrekken is dat een goede periode? De overtochten met de bemande boten is dat lastig te regelen of komen ze voor 1 persoon overvaren?

Hey! There are huts (with shops) on trail, don't worry :). I think you pass one at least every two-three days (except for the part between Jäkvikk and Kvikkjokk).

Thanks for the video! I'm planning to walk the Kungsleden next July and I'm already looking for advice :) Going to watch the video from your hike next, but have to go to work first.
One thing I was wondering about is if it's possible to hike either very early or very late during the day to avoid crowds. I'd prefer going from North to South, but I don't want to get caught in a stream of people, so maybe I could use the midnight sun to my advantage? My sleep schedule is pretty messed up anyway :D
Or am I missing a reason why this could be a bad idea?
Hey! I can't think of any reason why you couldn't walk during the night while there's a midnight sun :)! Only 'bad' thing I can think of is that the shops won't be open during those times and that people will be making some noise during daytime (when you are trying to sleep). Good luck!!

degrifo Hey! You can get on and off the trail at Hemavan, Ammarnäs, Kvikkjokk, Vakkotavare and Abisko. Possibly there are more options, so if you can get the book I recommend in this video: detailed information is in there!
Hi Floor! I have a question about at what time of year you hiked Kungsleden? Which month and why? I myself have heard that Kungsleden is the best to hike at the end of summer but I am afraid it will be a lot of people if I were to go at that time. I want to run in to a minimum amount of people and at the same time have a nice hike!

Julia. Hey Julia! I started my hike mid August. I wouldn’t go later because the boats don’t go from a certain date on. This is a great time though, all the colours are already changing to the autumn-palette and it’s not too cold (the coldest night on the trail was around -8°C, a little further than Singi). The crowd was ok, but that’s because I hiked from South to North. If I would’ve started the hike in the North around mid August, I would be in the crowd of the Fjällraven Classic which is an event where thouuuusands of people hike from Kebnekaise to Abisko. That’s no fun! Anyways: from Hemavan-Kvikkjok there’s no need to worry about the crowdedness of the trail, it’s more from Kvikkjokk till Abisko. Enjoy your hike!!

Hi Floor, I am planning on trekking the entire route, would you recommend sleeping in a tent the whole route or mixing up the trip with using the Huts?
Hey Andrew! I love the freedom of a tent: in Sweden you can wildcamp everywhere so you can make your hiking days as long/short as you want to. However, I slept in a bed twice on trail, which was in Jäkvikk and Saltoluokta. Those nights were good because I was able to have a proper shower and charge all my stuff. But definitely bring your tent, you won't regret it!
I’ll be hiking the trail June 6-18th and I’m seeing this is outside the hiking season I think. Which means no huts? Does anyone have experience or know what will be available during this time of hiking? I’m mostly concerned about refueling food which it sounds like there can be shops along the way but not sure they’ll be open now
haha, sometimes i am pretty dense. i was listening to your video and was confused about some information. Until i realized the video is not about the "SOUTHERN Kungsleden" xD
Hey! I read that the STF huts don't have electricity. What about the cabins? How did you handle getting power during the whole hike? I do have a powerbank, but I would feel more comfortable to know that I can always use my phone for emergencys etc.
Oh and how did you keep track on how many kilometres you walked? Are there sign posts? :)
Lea K Hey Lea! The huts and cabins don’t have electricity. Only the mountain stations and little towns have this! I believe that’s in Hemavan, Ammarnäs, Jäkvikk, Kvikjokk, Saltoluokta and Abisko!

Hey! Nice video. We are just preparing for the trek. So wondering, cannot actually find information, what is the situation with electricity? At what stages we can have a chance to charge our devices?
lol I'm here preparing for the track too, I plan to go from mid july to mid august. How do you plan to deal with the situation of having to have reservation in the huts because of covid? I just plan to sleep all the nights in the tent because I have no idea when I will reach certain huts so I cannot make reservations

Hey! You can mostly charge your stuff at every fjällstation. I don't know every exact location by heart anymore, but if you have the Plan&Go-guide you can see the charging locations in the table somewhere halfway in the book :)!

A little late to the party here, but what the heck. Just a comment on tip 10. I'd still bring a water filter, In fact, I always filter my water on trail, even water from really nice, high altitude streams. This is to avoid getting sick from dead animals, animal (or god forbid human) faeces upstream. It's usually not a problem, but 59 grams (the weight of my water filter) and the 5 minutes extra when I refill seems worth it to me in order to limit the likelihood of getting sick on trail. :)
As far as I can tell, the official recommendation from the Swedish "Outdoor Promotion Organization" is to drink groundwater if possible, and if not, boil the water for a few minutes. Boiling is way too much work for me personally, so the filter seems like a nice middle ground. :)
I’m in Norway right now and while the water is very clean here, I mist say that I changed my opinion on that one! I use a water filter now, always :).
If i decide to use private boat then somone will go with me or I have to steer a boat?

I know there is shops but what kind of food do they sell ? do they sell These TrakkingFoodBags? or is it tin food ? :) Cant imagine to carry all the these trakking food bags for the whole trip :) can u bye them on the way or how did u do it ?

Hey Lewe!
There are a lot of shops on te trail, and most of them (certainly the bigger ones) sell these Adventure Food bags :). They usually also sell chocolate, chocolate bars, cheese, apples, crackers and some other stuff. Every shop is different, but most of them have all of the above :). Don’t worry about food, there’s plenty (just not between Jäkvikk and Kvikkjokk)!

If you find only one rowing boat on your side the best thing to do is just wait untill someone else comes rowing in from the other side. Just pitch your tent, have a meal, sleep for an hour and voilá, two rowing boats on your side!
Floor, je bent een ware inspiratiebron! Top hoor. Mag ik je een vraagje stellen aub. Wat heeft deze trip je gemiddeld gekost? Bijv. 50€ per dag of 100 € per dag of zo ...? Na opzoekwerk vind ik enkel opsommingen van eenheidsprijzen ... Ik denk dat jouw manier van aanpak overeenkomt met de mijne dus zou mij dat een goed beeld geven van het budget dat ik moet reserveren. Hey Raf! Als ik het me goed herinner heb ik max €500 uitgegeven ter plekke. Dit is inclusief bootritjes, twee overnachtingen in een hut en eten onderweg. Met de hoge indexatie momenteel is dat vandaag de dag wellicht wat meer, dus schiet me niet af als het duurder is dan €500! (Ik deed 18 dagen over de wandeling)

Hi Floor! Nog een vraagje, hoe bel je de booteigenaren als je geen bereik hebt op het grootste deel van de route?
Maxime Waar de meeste boten zijn heb je wel signaal meestal. 1 keer stond er een bordje waarop stond ‘bel hier naar de boot want verderop is er geen signaal’, anders heb je soms ook een vlaggensysteem waarbij je een vlag omhoog moet hijsen aan jouw kant van de rivier om een teken te geven dat je er bent!

Hi , enjoyed all videos on Kungsleden. I’m going this August 2019 . Two questions on what you’ve advised. Firstly how much money(cash) would you recommend to take. Secondly for the paid crossings did you contact them before you started to let them know the day you’d arrive at southern end and I’m travelling south to north. Thanks
mow 1701 Hey! I think I spent €500-600 euros on trail. That includes the boats (those are expensive!), 2 nights with a bed, 1 night on a camping in Abiskojaure, 3 times sauna, 1 STF membership card, a couple of restaurant-meals and all the food I bought in shops :).
About the paid crossings: you usually call them a couple of hours before you arrive at the southern side. They have fixed times which you can find online, so plan your day according to these times so you don’t have to wait 4 hours for a boat to come! Sometimes there are little boards that say ‘call here for the boat, further on you don’t have phone signal’, other times there’s just signal everywhere and you can call them whenever you want. Sometimes (very rarely) there’s a flag at the southern side of the lake/river which you have to put up so they can see that there’s someone there. They will come and get you at their fixed times then :).

I have a bit of a fear of heights. Are there any scary tracks up high with no railings or scary climbing required?
Not that I remember! Skierffe is quite high, but that's off trail so that's optional :). You're in the mountains though, so you're constantly going up and down, I don't know how big your fear is, but I don't think it would be a problem for someone with a little fear of heights. Maybe one tip: take some hiking poles with you, if there would be any tracks that are scary you have that extra support and you'll feel more secure!

Electrick The only one I remember, you can see in my hiking video of the Kungsleden at 15:39. It’s not long, only a couple of meters!
What about wind? Is it strong? Does is change?
Ad Astra Wind is quite ‘normal’, never had a heavy storm (except for my first night, but that as because I put up my tent in a wind tunnel, so that was my own fault). There was some wind at night and on top of mountains, but nothing abnormal :).

Hey Nicolas! You are allowed to make fires, but of course be safe. Be sure that it's completely out and that it can't spread etc. Enjoy the hike!

It is allowed but in the northern part there often is just not enough wood available to run a fire. And you are NOT allowed to cut living trees. Pls don't only rely on starting a fire to cook your food.
Another thing to think about is if the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) have called a fire ban. We have had them every year I've hiked in Fjällen due to drought. Very important :)

Hoe weet je zo zeker of het water drinkbaar is?
Stromend water in de bergen is meestal drinkbaar (als het er schoon uitziet). Let wel op dat er geen dieren in de buurt zijn, zij kunnen af en toe hun behoefte in de rivier doen!
Hey Floor ! I watched your videos for the Kungsleden and it was really inspiring ! I already have my plane tickets booked for beginning of September and I am getting all the gear needed for the hike. However, there is one thing I cannot be sure yet. What about gas for your stove? I'm flying to Kiruna and not sure if it is easy to find some up there. Do you have any tips for that? Nicolas Liégeois Hey Nicolas! I think you can be pretty sure there will be gas in Kiruna. Otherwise, you can look for it in the little shop in Abisko. You should be really unlucky to not find gas in this hiking region :). Don’t panic if you don’t find it before you start hiking: in most of the huts with shops, there are also gas cannisters (the later you go, the emptier the stores are, so maybe there aren’t some left if you go in September). Have fun!!!

@@nicolasliegeois9582 Hey Nicolas! I bought it straight from their website, nog knowing that there would be a big additional cost at the post office :p. So it was really expensive. Haven't found a way to get it in a store in Europe... I guess the only option is travelling to the US or asking a friend who's travelling there to take it with them :).

Hey Karen, not at all! Mostly everybody in Sweden is bilingual with English as their second language. And otherwise some good old sign language will help, although I doubt you would need it :).

Well from abisko to nikkaloukta its 100km. Thats a 100km stream of people, not a 1h walk with a stream of people. Most people just walk from nikkaloukta to Kebnekaise and back.
Abisko to nikkaloukta is not very crowded. At most you will meet 20 people a day, passing both ways
