India is building lots of bullet trains, mumbai ahemedabad bullet train, delhi varanasi bullet train etc with more to come with NHSRCL
Hi-speed rail must be laid out straighter than old rail. Curiously a high-speed train can tolerate quite steep inclines and downslopes as long a the vertical radius isn’t too small. Making the track straight mean moving more earth and morde tunnels. The track in general must be built and maintained to much closer tolerances. It must have stronger overhead power supply and a signaling system capable of handlig the speeds. At high speeds lineside signals can’t be read. There must be no level crossings and the entire track should be fenced in. Can a bullet train run on normal tracks? Yes and no.They are straighter, smoother, and tend to be higher quality construction. Tunnels tend to have more space around the track. Bullet trains CAN run on conventional track if their gauge matches the track, but they will be SEVERELY speed limited for safe operation and many of them are designed for electric power so the non-bullet track would have to match that as well.

The reason China's railway is in high debt bcz they gave those expensive rail services which were targeted for developed country's rich citizens to developing country's lower/upper middle class citizens....they reduced ticket prices so public could afford it but bcz of that the revenue generated annually in China's railway services wasn't even enough to pay for electricity bills and on the other hand those so called cheap ticket rates were still expensive for average chinese citizen...their opinion was “i can save my 2 hours by paying $30 for ticket but how many hours would it take to earn that money back?"

    • @lokeshwaranvr

They built it too big. Most trains are empty and become full only during holidays unlike Japanese and European ones that even though run throughout the day become busy during rush hours, weekends and obviously during holidays.
I think even India should follow the Japanese. High speed tracks (fenced and elevated) should be layed only on important main lines connecting important cities and different parts of the country and High-speed train /Shinkansen capable tracks should be laid in tier 2 cities to connect them to high speed main lines.

Bullet train tracks(connecting lines) can be laid all over India (most tier 2 cities) with certain important lines(high speed main lines). Example: We have a high speed line fully secured from trespassing capable of 300kmph between Mumbai and Ahmedabad then Shinkansen rakes can be used in such a way that Mumbai to Ahmedabad is covered by high speed and the same rakes continue until Rajkot on Shinkansen tracks with reduced speed. This train can be called "Mumbai - Rajkot High speed express/whatever special name". U think Japan too operates certain lines like Akita Shinkansen like this.

We should really really really converge both bullet trains and RRTS system into one for tracks and connectivity management. if need be one solution for land acquisition, extra tracks with sound barrier between each track, 4 tracks total with two tracks dedicated one-way only (just operational). And we don't have to change anything else, or seek land clearance anymore in the future.
4 tracks of bullet standards, and use them as RRTS to connect all the major A and B cities in India... may be airlines will lose profit

HSR rake can be developed in India in future or so we don't need to import shinkasen.
We don't always use HSR specially in night so those timings these infra can used by freight and sHSR.

There is no way current railway tracks, traffic, stations, etc can support high-speed train operation, and if the government decides to modify everything in the existing system still, it would struggle to support the high speed because of inherent limitations.
Billions of dollars will go down the drain so it is better to start with a clean slate(bullet trains) than try to do a "juggad" with existing systems.
Railway should try to achieve at least 125/km average speed with the Vande Bharat trains by modifying tracks, signals, etc, that would be a great achievement with the existing infra.

Without modification of tracks the railway cant be upgraded. Too much outdated tracks. Here my question
    i) Can we run normal trains in bullet train tracks if the train also based on Standard Gauge train ?
I think i saw this in Europe where the normal train achive its full potential in that bullet train track.
ii) Is Broad Gauge bad form of Train. Most of the world uses Standard Gauge. I heard standard gauge gives more stability and speed.

The first reason is not that convincing, you don't need standard guage for high speed rail. Russia has a successful high speed rail line in normal broad gauge. There's no engineering limitation that prevents high speed rail to operate in broad guage. Broad even provides additional stability for high speed operation
