In India, Greenfield projects are cheaper to build rather than brownfield. A lot of Government land is under illegal encroachment. It sometimes becomes too costly to recover that land because people go to courts and create years long deadlock.
Recently, Railways is recovering land where it can by giving money (buying back it's own land). You can guess how costly it can get in big cities. Also, states don't co-operate with Union Government because it is primarily state government's duty to protect Railways land from encroachment which they don't. It is similar case with National Highways.

I am an Industrial Designer and let me tell you, 3D printing is not cheap and very impractical for mass manufacturing. It is good for precision prototyping but not mass manufacturing. Plus, upgrading everything is unfeasible. Simply upgrading everything to a very high standard will be useless as it will be impossible and impractical to maintain it at that standard. If an area doesn't warrant high speeds, there is no need for it. Different solutions for different problems. One size doesn't fit all.

One of the big improvements railways can make instead of improving speed is improving customer experience, which is equally (if not more) important. If trains are as stable and quiet as modern airplanes, so much so that people can ignore that they are in a train, then automatically trains would be better than planes, since we can get network in trains. If you are comfortable in trains, then you won't be in such a hurry to get off! Of course, in this scenario we ignore people with time constraints. They can use flights in case of an emergency.

But its a great trade-off. A person who can stand in general for 12+ hours , can certainly stand for 6 hours to reach the same destination faster and probably will pay more, if needed.

But overall analysis is great and supports dedicated high speed corridors like bullet trains. This will give massive thrust to the Indian economy as well. Yes i have a few questions, recently there was a lot of money spent on redevelopment of new lines. also as you may be knowing railway lines needs to be replaced with new ones on regular basis, i don't have idea about when does IR do, but in generally in 10 to 15years it happens. during that time replacement and of beds is also done, its a huge investment process and time consuming too.
I had the opportunity to ask some contractors a few questions and one official answered my candidly.
    my question were
    1. Why don't we remove the curves by investing little more on this section by buying aligned land and selling the non aligned land(cost can be saved as we have Refabrication of this 120km section)
His answers: Good idea but land acquisition is involved, and no one wanna get involved in it, and money is sanctioned for repair and Refabrication only. if we wanna do it will mean putting hands in honey bee comb. no one in our right mind will do it.
    2. Sir, as per the research findings if we use long rails with 60kg rail instead of 52Kg rails. the gap between the concrete slabs can also be reduced.
answer same as above, as this trake has a designed speed of 110kmph, we need to make this track only that much capable.
    3. the gradient and soil on certain section is not suitable for high speed, and we have restrictions of speeds for 20kmph or 40kmph, which results in traffic and low avg speed.
    can you do this.
he said nope thats also new work and doesn't fall in repair and refrarication work.
    4. there are new lines getting designed in many places, why don't we make them 250kmph capable from the start.
Answer, no it can't be done, as funds are allocated for only 110kmph line only.
atleast make 2 lines on busy routes,
    can't do that.
P.S: refabrication work lines cost 40 to 60percent cost of lines

Long route trains shohld have only 1 stop per city and 1 stop for every 100km. The traks inside city should be improved so that train can maintain 100kmph rather than crawling at 20 kmph.
Even these changes should help to achieve 100kmph with top speed limited at 130kmph.

Otherwise running And launching new Vande Bharat trains is a futile exercise if they also run at same avg speed of 90 kmph. #AskPT: Instead of WDFC and EDFC could we have built an alternative for fast trains instead. And used the existing tracks for freight?

@@mayankyadav707 , 1)to increase Freight capacity, higher capacity of tracks required (heavy rail for more Weight),
      2) new stations would fall on outskirts of city centre. Problem for people.
      3) Passengers need fully fledged station. Food, water, shed, toilet, escalator, over bridges, plateform of particular height, etc.

It may not be possible to upgrade full track (easier to build new tracks side by side). But I wonder if overall average speed can be increased on older tracks by correcting issues with bottleneck sections using 80-20; Pareto principle. 🤔😳👏👏

If Average speed of 150km is also achievable on this tracks then we should do that & most important kavach safety system should be in each trains.
