I was going to wrap the tank on my Harley, thought I would watch a "how to" like this to give me an idea of how hard it will be. Now after watching this I've decided to do something easier like build a nuclear submarine.

I just attempted the tank on my Sportster thinking it would be easier than what he just went through. I was wrong and I can confirm it would be easier to build that submarine!

When Wrapping side mirrors, fuel tanks, or anything that has really complex curves, you start out looking the same, having to slowly "mold" the vinyl around those complex curves. All while making sure to not over stretch the vinyl to prevent causing discoloration. Most low "rent" shops will piece together complex curves on mirrors, bumpers, and even rear deck lids, or gas tanks. It's the people that do single piece wraps up to panel gaps that are the true "PROS"... and are well worth the money.

      @remotexpolde 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Awesome. Having said the above, if one was to wrap a HD Dyna fuel tank, keeping the chrome centerpiece, would it be best to do it in one piece ( much less odd angles as in this video ), or each side separately? ~ I wrapped the forks in Carbon fiber after an auto shop said "it will just keep peeling because it's exposed to air". 2 years later, Zero peeling. Looks great. I'm sold on a mat Black Satin Wrap.. just figuring out the best way to get it done Well. Thanks man. Cheers!

So after watching this and his struggle with the tank moving I recommend this:
If your workspace is "L" shaped (with a wall behind your desk) mount points for bungie-cords.
    Have a shelf too.
Mount cords on the shelf, desktop, and wall. These points can hook onto most pieces and makes you "suspend" the piece so you dont have to hold it. Tried it today. Made my production faster!

What's your take on pinstriping butt joints? I have a similar tank I want to do the wrap in two colors. The top in brushed aluminum and the contour on the sides with matt black. Then I want to pinstripe with gloss black. I also want to do this "silver stripe" on the mud guards too. But, they are already matt black. So, it'd simply be the aluminum with a gloss black pinstripe.

I’m picturing some kind of adjustable jig that you clamp to the table and would hold this in place

What I learned from this video:
If you are going to wrap a motorcycle tank off the bike, bring a friend to hold it.

Why not secure the tank to a piece of plywood or material work bench is made of to give it more weight and stability so you struggle less with it moving around on you? It would be nice to see the finished product. This video helped me realize doing my car will be much easier than I thought due to some of the Technics you have displayed. Thank you for sharing your time and experience.

I don't know. With that amount of stretching and glassing, I can't help but wonder how long before the wrap job will begin to fail, especially when the bike is sitting in the direct sun on a hot summer day.

Ps. I have no friends... hehe. ;)
    Quick question.
What your doing looks like "pre'heat stretching?"
The post heat to get it back in place?..
Not done a tank so im just posting my thoughts here.

+valli vals yes that's exactly what I'm doing. Always heating after the stretch to reduce tension on the film

I think there is demand for a helmet in which there is heat gun in front of your mouth piece in which you use your mouth to turn it off or on or adjust the heat.
so you can focus on warping the whole thing without picking the heat gun once in a while.

I own a VN 1600 meanstreak and I'm thinking of wrapping the bike. Looking at this video makes me wondering if my tank would be a lot easier to do because of the shape? Is it easier to work with a mat wrap ?

Would it be a good idea to do the wrap on the bike and only remove the tank from the bike once you get to the bottom?

I think that I would build some kind of jig in my shop to hold this steady, I think the movement would drive me crazy. It's driving me crazy just watching this.

anker the tank down with tie straps through the mount holes through the table or a piece of plywood.

For demonstrate purposes should have thrown together a make shift stand . Couple pc's of wood and couple bolts. :-)

I was thinking that. A jig to make life easier. To be fair he showed how how skillful he obviously is with it sliding all over the place.

Thanks for the tips. I'd really like to see how you tackle side fairings from the bike.
