  • This is a first look of the OWON CP-05+ current Clamp and I compare it to the Hantek CC-65 current Clamp. These current probes are two of the low cost current probes on the market.

    hello Eddie, great comparison. I believe that many other people also had problems with the owon clamp meter and complained. because owon now has a new clamp meter on the market, the "upgraded CP024". maybe it would be interesting to repeat the comparison. I, and probably many others as well, would be very happy to see that. thank you very much, your work is very insightful.

    Very interesting video - I just ordered the Hantek current probe, and I am interested in how you set up your FRA on that scope. I have a RIgol MSO5074 and was looking for a similar function, but no FRA there. There is a Bode analysis, which I am thinking is the same thing. I have just a hobby level electonics background, and the bode plot "tips" on my scope show a much more complex diagram than the Instek showed. Can you provide any more detail on how you connected your scope to do that analysis? THANKS!

    • @mgobluevictor
      @mgobluevictor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Replying to my own comment, I now realize that your scope is an MDO (not an MSO), so it likely has more capabilities than mine, so I may be chasing my tail here!

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Yes FRA (Frequency Response Analyzer) is the same as the Bode Analysis on your scope. There will be 2 curves, one is for the gain and the other is for the phase. The gain is the output voltage divide by the input voltage, but then it is plotted typically in dB, so that's when you take the log of the Vout/Vin and then multiply that by 20 so (20LogVo/Vin). @@KissAnalog Thanks for the video link. I watched that one, and REWATCHED this one on the current probes. I must have skipped over the setup portion the first time I watched it, as I now see how you connected things. Voltage measured with channel 1 and current clamp on channel 2, and the function gen is running at 2v amplitude. With your 20ohm resistor, you would be getting 200mA right? Are the function generators built into these scopes capable of sourcing that current? That is a spec I have been unable to find for my scope yet. I will try this out when I get my Hantek clamp tomorrow!

    Hi Eddie, the owon clamp has a larger radius, could it be that’s because it’s designed for thicker wires and larger currents? Still, no good for your application.
    What would be the proper way to measure the current without a current clamp, is there some probe that you can put in series? Or do you just use a resistor and a differential probe or two channels?

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No actually I have used an instrument that used various current probes and one was a large loop that was meant for high current (2000 amps), but still worked great for small wires down to about 0.5 amps.

Under full 55 mega watt load... Biggest I've worked on had 55 one mega watt generators (20 cylender CAT diesel engines with 4 turbos are burning close to 300 gallons of diesel fuel per generator at idle, no load, definetly a big pucker factor that it all works reliably every time and did not blow up..!).

    I just got pointed to this video so sorry for the late reaction... the FRA measurement for the Owon is done wrong. The Owon is way less sensitive (10x) compared to the Hantek and it has a higher bandwidth and thus more noise (this has to do with how a typical HAL sensor works). If you look at the signals used during the FRA measurement you'll see there is only noise coming from the Owon probe. There isn't enough current flowing through the Owon current probe to get a good reading. In general when doing bode plots: a weird phase jump is a dead giveaway that there is something wrong with the measurement setup. The amplitude is too small to measure the phase properly. I tested a CP05A current probe using much more current so there is a signal work with and it turns out it has the -3dB point at 240kHz without any weird phase jumps.

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback Nico! You are correct that if there were a 10x difference then this would affect the signal to noise ratio and could account for the extra noise.
      But, the Owon's lower two scales actually match the Hantek's two scales. The Owon does have the 3rd scale which is 10x higher than the 2nd. If you watch at 15:17 you will see how the scope is set for each probe at the same 10x setting and the readings on the scope match in level. I was using a 20 ohm resistor with a 2V signal, so the readings were showing 100mV which is correct.
      What's confusing is the scales on each are shown differently, but they are the same: the Hantek shows 1mV/10mA for the lowest scale, so 100mA would show a 10mV; the OWON shows 100mV/1A, so again, 100mV would show 10mV. So I used 10X to bring this back to 100mV.
      Ironically, the OWON claims 1mA to 400A at 200kHz but the Hantek claim 20mA to 65A. I figured the Owon 1mA was incorrect, and the Hantek 20mA more believable. Looking at the Owon spec, it is interesting that they change the way they call out the ranges and the bottom two are actually called out the same way Hantek calls theirs out (4A: 1mv/10mA, and 40A: 1mV/100mA, and then the Owon has the additional range 10x higher, 200A-400A: 1mV/A.
      During the sweeps - you can see the waveforms in the window on top, and around 12min you can see that the OWON does show a high noise content. But I think you are right in that the signal is so low that the Owon is not happy. It is definitely out of spec, and might be better with higher current, but it was disappointing.
      I will do a new video where I will attempt to make it better and will do a before and after. I'll run it at different current levels to see how it performs;)

    Bummer. I don't know what consumer law is like in the US but here in the UK (EU) you would have 2 years to get that sorted or refunded, especially if it's not fit for purpose, and never mind 'returns policy' small print! For any UK viewers, CPC have some deals running on clamp meters in their bargain corner - cpc.farnell.com/test-equipment-bargain?ICID=Bargain-Test-Equipment#multimeters-clamp-meters. Mostly Tenma, which like the Hantek and Owon, is a rebranded generic item from China but they also have a Fluke - of course Fluke and 'bargain' is a bit of a relative term but you could buy with confidence. I'd be happier buying Tenma from the likes of Farnell than I would anything except a major brand from Amazon - that place is packed to the gills with cheap and nasty these days, to the extent its often impossible to find the quality items from the thousands of identical-yet-different-brand rip off junk.

    I may come across like a smug smartypants now, but I will take that risk, for my conscience is clear; I only want to help, not preach.
    Firstly, I wish you luck in returning the OWON. In my experience it is impossible, but US laws may protect your interests better.
    Your email may get no reply from Amazon or a robot-response. Write a stinker of an app review in Google Play Store, they will react to that, but it will die after a few soothing noises. I hope YMMV, but let's assume Amazon care equal number of figs for Indian & US laws. My suggestion on how to make the best of a bad situation :
    Trace the circuit diagram of the OWON, esply the input. Compare it with the Hantek and the performance with other OWON reviews (I too will search & revert) It seems that there might be some dry solder causing the noise. And a missing/extra cap causing the phase-shift. I daresay it will be time well spent if you do a repair video on the OWON.
    If we just wanted to hear that a $65 gizmo is gaaabij compared to a $175 cousin, we would still be watching the EWWWW-blog.
    Shall we roll up our sleeves & do something cool instead of adding to the hot air like the..... Ooops. I'll go quietly, guv.

      TH-cam has no other review of the OWON CP-05+
      Not even Google. Well, there are a couple, but the gizmo does not look the same.

      Thank you - I really appreciate your support!
      I’ll keep you posted. I think I’ll try to reverse engineer this thing. That’s a great idea to compare the two circuits. I hope to make both products better! I like this challenge!! Great idea!!!

      @@KissAnalog Yes follow that up for sure. $175 for that its just not right. What about warranty surly this does not meet the specifications and you showed how poor the quality was..... Good luck
