    Got-it;
    *Primary: Input freq range (aka bandwidth like 50mhz), sample resolution (samples per sec like 2.5xfreq?), display buffer memory size like, & capture rate (ex: waveform display rate)
    *Secondary: # of bits for amplitude, read std serial protocols, multimeter, funct gen, spectrum analyzer (MDO), logic analyzer (MSO), # input channels, Display size, etc

    Started off with Analogue scopes…. First digital scope I used was a Nicolet something something back in the early 80’s. Only had a dot display, so no joining of the dots. It was terrible. Used a 475 for many years, then a 2485 until around 2010. Digital scopes just didnt do it for me. After 2010 to now, I used both an analogue scope and a GW instek GDS2204 in my home workshop. This year I bought a new cheap Siglent MSO, the SDS1104-XE scope. Heck, was I blown away by the new generation oscilloscopes. FFT works fantastic, Bode-plots work great. RF-signals was always a big issue for digital scopes, but no problems with the new digital scope, even X/Y mode is greatGuess my analogue scope will be delegated to sit unused on the rack for now.

      Thanks for your feedback! I know what you mean - and I went down a similar road. I loved my 475 and then 485. I then stepped up and got a 2465 and then a 2430 (digital Tek scope, but it was not what digital scopes are today). Digital scopes with deep memory and FFT are amazing!

    This video is really good, professionally opinionated and very experienced advices (seems like :) ) on what is needed and what is wanted. I want to buy my first oscilloscope and, after reading tons of unsubstantiated opinions, fanatics points of view, and click baits, this is one of the first videos that I can classify as (mega-) useful. The searching is getting really hard, but at list you bring some clarity :) Thanks for teaching us!

    Excellent rundown. Didn't get the deep memory thing completely until now.
    The old CRT scopes would leave the vertical amplifiers running during the retrace, they would just kill the cathode drive (blanking). I had a couple of scopes where you could turn off the blanking in case you were concerned about missing something. My 1st scope was a (very old) rack mounted unit purchased at a Hamfest and didn't even have retrace blanking. I think it was originally used for monitoring modulation level at a AM station. The single trace analogs may be very fast, but with the old dual trace ones, you had a choice of alternating channels or chopping, both of which would miss things, especially on the early digital era stuff. I still have my Heathkit dual trace I built in high school, and several other CRT scopes, including a fairly recent (

    I'm still fairly new with oscilloscope but have many years of experience working with automotive electronics. I currently own 6 tektronix analog oscilloscopes, 1 hitachi analog scope, 1 hp analog xy display monitor and a hp logic analyzer, a bunch of other old school test equipment that I haven't even figured out what it does or how to use it. Basically acquired a university physics lab from the 70's for next to nothing. At first I was intrigued by your mentioning of forgetting analog test equipment and then noticed the part where you mentioned @ 13:19 in this video how the digital scope was mimicking an analog scope. Perhaps I'm missing something in the interpretation of your comments, but if we should just forget about analog test equipment because it is so antiquated, then why compare the latest and greatest digital scopes to that old shit? I have a difficult time putting faith into someone that contradicts themselves in such a manner. This is the first video of yours that I have viewed so I do not have any idea of your qualifications to be recommending that everyone should just run out and only purchase digital oscilloscopes no matter what. Perhaps a better way to inform people would be to do a size by side comparison of the technologies and explain the differences, drawbacks and/or benefits. As for myself, I will just stick with the real-time measurements offered by the old shitty analog scopes that so far have not let me down. In my experience, when diagnosing electronic malfunctions, 99.9% of the time, it is typically bad solder joints, chafed wires or components that are visibly bad. Analog scopes will confirm the malfunction without the need for deep memory or any type of storage for that matter. All I have to do is watch the glitch occur as I tap or wiggle test the circuit in question. More than likely there are real uses for digital scopes that I do not comprehend at this point in time, but to say that analog scopes are pretty much worthless is a blanket statement that apparently doesn't sit well with me. This is just my opinion and I don't mean any disrespect.

    The main function of "deep memory" is to mimic the utility of a secondary timebase on an analog scope. (dual trace delayed sweep scope). That is to say, inspecting a signal in fine detail but the trigger happened long ago in a galaxy far away. An important difference is that the analog scope requires a recurring signal (such as a complex NTSC television signal) in order to view the detail but a digital storage scope needs only one "sweep" to capture enough detail for close inspection. It is probably not very effective as a studio monitor where real time immediate visualization is important.

      It is upgradable to a 350Mhz so I hope that it is okay for that also. 8Gs/s is pretty high, but that number can't be to high.

      @@KissAnalog Yes that is the MSO5000 series, I did choose that scope because it can do most things, and I do not know what I want to do in maybe 3-5 years from now.
      I am glad that you think it is a "beast" it make me feel more safe in my choice. :-)
      What about it's specifications if I later upgrade it to a 350Mhz, is it still balanced in it's data?

      Yes if you can or ever need to upgrade it. I’d be interested in what signals that you are capturing.
      I think Rigol proved my point on the validity of 70 MHz. Why even offer that bandwidth when so much cost went into the board design? As BR noted, that’s a great sampling rate! Cheers!

    I know how to use my scope and function generator along with making sure the waveform is what I want to see when playing with circuits. I know what dB is in respect to audio but not in relation to waveform capture and creation.

    It depends on what you need to measure. If your work is on audio gear, IMO, an analog scope is easier and more convenient to use. The only advantage I can see to a digital scope for audio use is it is smaller/lighter/easier to move around if necessary. But if you do your work at a bench, an analog scope is my choice - I find myself using my 2246 90% of the time over my digital scope.

    Hi Eddie good video,
    From my experience of oscilloscopes, buy what you can afford and update when nessacary.
    Back in the 1990's I bought my first CRT scope 20Mhz bandwidth, £400.
    Trying single shot capture a signal with a scope hood camera was really expensive !.
    Moved to a Siglent 70 MHz dso scope (£200) in about 2010 and had reservations whether the signal I was looking at could trusted.
    It was a steep learning curve, but once you understand the DSO's it a big advantage over CRT scopes
    Tried XY mode on the DSO its as slow as wet weekend.
    Bought the Rigol ds1054z hacked it up to 100Mhz, ended putting on eBay, just could not get on with the user interface and lack of firmware updates to iron out the bugs.
    Finally bought the Siglent sds1102x and not looked back, no intentions of upgrading again.
    The wave form update speed is a bit of a marketing joke, you'll only get the specified updates in dot mode at a certain time base setting !
    Would you do a video on using two channel's as a poor mans differential mode ?, as I am wanting to check the output of a bridged Amplifier.

    As far as combined DM, logic analyser and signal generator, I went for separate items bit old fashioned that way.

      The X-E hadn't been launched, when I purchased the X model, still l got the decode licence for free.
      It has the BNC for the wave gen and the button, It's not a working feature.
      I've just purchased the Siglent ISFE differential dual channel module.

    I have still on my bech a old soviet one. made in the 50's :D is not really that deep just 30cm, it has 3 tubes a2.5inch crt and a woooooooping 10mhz (modifiend in the 60-70 for 25mhz). I still like it a lot. He helped me to understand electronics, one cand test and measure almost anything on it with the help of some passives a pen and a piece of paper.this kind of tool dose not give you the answer but it let you find it. A partner of a engineers path.

    1968 TO 1972 I worked with a PB250 computer for a simulator. that computer used a magno-restrictive delayl line for computer memeory. from one end of the delay line to the other was 3 miliseconds. We used a tectronics scope to look at the digital data pattern with that scope. I can only guess what that scope cost. Today for a fraction of that cost I have digital scope that would do what that tektronics did.

    A decent analog scope goes for fifty cents per Mhz. If cost is a concern, there are some characteristics of analog scopes - like immediacy and responsive of display - are appealing.

    Been watching most all your TH-cams, Great Job. A question I have. All my Computer stuff are Macs. It seems that ever Osciliscope I read about are PC only. What should I consider with this in mind when choosing a scope.

      Roger Coon Hi Roger - thanks for your support! I also use Macs, and there is a program called Parallels which windows will then run on. It will run Windows programs along with Mac programs seamlessly. Fast and reliably. If you are looking at one of those pc type scopes maybe look for an android type that can run on a tablet. I am in the process of trying to review some of these. Let us know what you learn.

      @@KissAnalog I was trying to keep my question to a minimum but I was not clear. I'm not interested in a Computer-based Oscilloscope ( I don't think). I'm referring to the USB ports on most all these scopes. What are they actually used for and are they necessary (iE, Program up-dates etc )

      I haven’t tried one yet, but I’d think if your Mac has parallels program on it or if it is booted up in boot camp then I’d think you could.

    "The coolness effect" - LOL! We've all been there! You bought it because the dial goes up to 11, admit it.
    I've been looking around and think I've settled on the Siglent SDS1104X-E for my first scope - now I just need a reason to buy one, HA!. The 4 channels let the user split the 1GSa/s on each pair of channels at the same time, so 1 and 3/4 or 2 and 3/4. Also has 14Mpts so good deep memory. I had considered the GW Instek, which I really like, but I'm not working so the bucks are a little rich for me, especially for a first ever scope and compared to the Siglent at nearly 25% of the price. The logic analyser would be semi-useful: the team I volunteer with could use it to help with issues on the old (very old) machine we maintain. What happened to your Siglent vs Rigol video - that popped up and disappeared before I could see it?
    Incidentally, IIRC, analog scopes drove the electron path by manipulating a magnetic field between plates so it scanned across the screen as quickly as it could do that - close to the speed of light? I don't know, I could be talking rubbish :)
    Here's an interesting idea: how not to blow up your scope when undertaking common activities?

      The scope development changed everything for us techies! Thanks for the background!
      Amazon had a sale on a Rigol scope that was more than half off so I hurried and spent half my day to put up a video - hoping the sale was something that would last a week or two - thinking Rigol was dumping the line... But noooo - the sale was down by the time I could upload the video - which takes another couple of hours! So I got a bunch of views but one thumbs up and one thumbs down before I knew what happened.

I want to test the frequency response of those filters and planned to do it with a function generator and Hantek DSO5102P, but after watching some of your videos I realized that maybe I am missing something and there is a smarter way to do this? Maybe I need a spectrum analyzer idn. I also plan on using a logic analyzer sometime in the future so I am picking one up too. I am expending almost 800 in total and I feel my money could be spent in a smarter way.
    I'll keep watching your videos, I like them very much. Hopefully, I'll find my answers there. With that being said any suggestion or comment would be greatly appreciated

      Thank you for your great feedback! I think others too find feedback like this very useful and interesting! The FFT on the scopes are very good and work a lot like the spectrum analyzer. Look for the scopes that have 1 Mpts on the FFT for the resolution that you will want;)

      That's where a Bode plot comes in handy. FFT can help but what you would do is inject white noise into the filter and then FFT will give you the shape but seems a bit clumsy since FFT really isn't a substitute for swept frequency plotting. What FFT can do is analyze a single-shot signal where Bode plots or VNA require actively sweeping across a range of frequencies.

    I was using Tek scopes back in the 60's on some of the first military computers and equipment. Then when I got out of the service I used them to work on communication systems. I still have a 465B hooked up to a ham transceiver to monitor modulation. Those things were bullet proof.
    My first digital scope was a Tek too but it wasn't much of a scope. My last Tek scope was a 2024B with decoding. I'm kind of sorry I gave it up for my R&S scope. The build quality was better and the lead were much better but the R&S does a lot more like Bode plots and it's faster, I think 300 or 350M.

      Thanks for sharing this - very interesting info! I had a similar background, I ended up trading up to a 485B and I thought that was the best scope ever! My first digital scope was the 2430 and then I had the 2465 as well - I thought I’d have them forever;) I have to tell you, I would love the R&S scope! I held back for one thing that it is an expensive scope for TH-cam I think...maybe not:) I might still get one if I can sale some meters;)

      @@KissAnalog I remember when you were talking about your background thinking the same thing. I had the privilege of working on the first Top Secret computers for the Navy with some brilliant guys. It was a blast and we were in Hawaii, it was geek heaven! The registers were all neon lamps and you could see instructions move through them. I went on to work in communications, got several patents and gave it all up in my forties to build a house in the country, get married and now I run on PV and drive electric cars! I have a full lab and a decent machine shop, so I can make all my own project cases, knobs and stuff.
      The RTB2004 is a very good scope. I don't like the probes and the software has minor but annoying oddities but it does bode, FFT and decoding very well, just make sure if you get it all the firmware is included in one package. I think just the bode costs about $600 as an add on.
      You're a great teacher, you remind me of some of the professors I had when I was a kid in college, they were really enthusiastic and passionate about physics and electronics.

    You are mentioning the capture rate and how it relate with the old analog oscilloscope, but I don't think the older models were using a fly-back system like on CRT TVs, I think they were fully addressable 2D coordinate Vector Screens, like on the Vectrex Game Console, so basically you can "move the dot" wherever you want without any latency.
    That being said, I do have a question: Do you have any opinion/advice regarding USB models that use a computer screen to display data, for example things like the Hantek 6022BL, Dream Source Lab DSSCope U2P20, or RockTech/Loto/SainSmart/ OSCxxxx ?
    I've checked the spec, but I've to admit I don't really understand what they mean in term of onboard memory, or what "equivalent" means in regard to the digital bandwidth.
    Basically I'm looking for something that would work with my oldskool hardware work (8 bit and 16 bit computers), to analyse problems on the bus, with the audio or video issues, and also for analog vintage audio equipment troubleshooting... which would not take too much room and where I could easily transfer data to the PC for further analysis, backups, etc... when I'm doing technical blog posts or videos.

    What do you recommend for a scope to exam power circuits such as 480 volt- 60 hz. for VFD motor drives, etc... that are safe for higher voltages for power electrical work. Any makes and models that are responsibly priced ??

      Tim Miller I think any of the scopes that you like. I like my GW Instek and the Siglent. The main thing is that I’d recommend getting differential probes for the high impedance isolation and high voltage. Also a correct probe will be useful. Pintek vs Micsig Differential probe New low cost Pintek DP-25 differential probe. Hantek CC-65 low cost current probe review

      Definitely high voltage differential probes at a minimum. But a "scopemeter" may be a better choice; battery operated and thus completely isolated from mains and ground.

    If I understand you correctly, if I only care about restoration of old radios (broadcast and SW bands) the 50MHz digital Siglent (or clone) should be ok vs. worrying about going 4x the max of 30'ish MHZ that I would have to consider if going analog. Would that be correct?

      Hi Ross, yes I think 50 MHz is great for most work - unless you are working very fast digital or very fast analog. For what I think you are doing - I think 50 MHz is awesome! The so called 'entry level' keeps getting better and better, what they call entry level today the folks that made those old radios would have fallen off their chairs to see the specs;) Let us know what you decide and how it goes for you.

      Outer Limits The Micsig scope has very good specs - but I fo think there’s a trade off with a higher price for the portability. But then when you factor in that you also get isolation from the mains - it makes this option very compelling;)

    I am confused about the bandwidth spec, like 100 Mhz, 200 Mhz. What bandwidth are the manufacturers referring to? Thanks for the videos. They have been helpful.

      The bandwidth defines the max frequency that can be captured without loss. So, you can still, most likely, see a 200 MHZ signal on your scope that is only rated for 100 MHZ, but the amplitude would be attenuated.

I noticed the Siglent SA has features, options I like including distance to fault. If I had an SA, could I connect so I could review an incoming signal and my transmitted signal with a single connection method?

    Well I'm watching some of your older videos. Seems like you really like the Micsig now. The tablet form factor is great for anybody that has limited space. The biggest difference I notice from a cheap scope and a nicer one is the auto trigger function. On cheaper scopes most of the time it doesn't ever set time base or volts correctly.
    I'll never go back to an analog scope. Way too many tradeoffs.

      Thanks for the great feedback! What you say is true I think. I think the triggers on the Tektronix were what separated them from the pack back in the analog scope days - but now with digital scopes - this is not much of a thing anymore. It is crazy all the trigger types you get. The Micsig is the new toy, but it is actually really nice to use and easy. There is so much it does - it is really great you get all this in this form factor. Which makes it easy to do videos where the screen is close to the work on the bench:)

      Thanks for asking! One way is to turn off one breaker at a time and see if it goes away. If and when it does, then you will know what is powered by that breaker and it might help you find it. You can unplug each item on that power line until it goes away. Does that help?

    Would an analog scope show you the true clock of a 2000MH video card?
    A 200MH Digital would not right, is there any oscilloscope under 5 digits that will?
    I am so confused it think I'll end up building my own someday. But being into P.C. development atm is there any scope that will help me?

      Tek Analog scopes are absolutely amazing. I have a digital scope which I almost never use (I might even sell it). I trust my analog scopes way more for just about everything. Not to mention that the built quality and reliability of older gear is much, much better. Digital stuff are built like toys, all plastic, and they are not even serviceable. A big no no for me on a day to day basis. With digital, people stop thinking. They just trust what the machine tells them (which can sometimes be wrong for any number of reasons), instead of doing the math themselves and/or just think. Not for me.

      That is a great question. Are you going to be looking at the RF circuitry driving the Antenna? Or are you looking for something to look at the radiated signal?

    The thing is you said you are not a digital guy so yea 50Mhz is enough for you but an ESP32 already runs at 240Mhz so you won´t be seeing a lot with 50Mhz. If you are going to work with digital signals you will need a lot more. The ESP32 outputs a 80Mhz clock signal I think. At this point the Hantek scopes are so cheap that you can get either the 70/80Mhz version and hack it to 200/250 depending on the model or for 100-150 more just buy the top model. Same with the basic Rigol 1000 series. The Rigol MSO5000 series where you can even hack it from 2 up to 4 channels is an amazing deal at ~900.

      ​@@KissAnalog Capture rate. You said that depending by oscilloscope there's the capture rate in frames per second beginning from 40000... to 100000fps... In a game it's enough about 144fps so that a 60Hz screen to give a smooth image.
      Also the notion of memory point, 10k points, it's memory is measured in points not bytes, then what's a point.

      I believe it's also important the number of bit for ADC.

      The capture rate is huge because of the sampling rate and deep memory. It really isn't about the smooth screen image - it is more about the data captured to be sure that you don't miss any transient or spike.
      A Mpts (Mega points) is used for a sample but a sample could be different sizes depending on the A/D I think so they use Mpts to say how many samples can be stored.
      The Picos can go higher than the 8 bit A/D.

      ​@@KissAnalog Now I realize, like any Data Acquisition Board it has a capture rate in samples/s which is not related to fps of the screen. I was confusing.
      The points might be visually represented samples on the measured curve, so a sample should be a point and contain more or less bytes.
      I recently saw a review for a 12-bit oscilloscope i think under $400, hdmi optput and so on, i do not find it anymore.
      Once i was thinking PC oscs can use all free memory of the computer to store the history of measurements, but it seems it's only the deep onboard memory.

      But, I will review a new scope that is pretty amazing this next weekend:)
      I used Tektronix, Keysight and Rhode and Schwartz. They have huge bandwidths and deep memory and are 12 bit scopes instead of the typical 8 bit from the lower cost scopes. The one I'm reviewing has 12 bits and is much less money. The high-end $$$ scopes are really over kill for most uses. I think people doing high speed digital and/or display development probably needs them, but when you work for a defense contractor they buy expensive everything;)

    OK, I know this game, the whole idea here is not to sell you on what you need but to keep the hype going by talking about all the "cool" features and neato stuff that these systems can do. I'm always hoping that someone would sort it all out and say : these are the entry level scopes , these are the mid-range scopes, these are the high-end application specific scopes, but that's not going to happen. The whole idea is to keep you confused so that you'll be hot on the trail chasing video after video trying to sort everything out. The more videos you watch, the more advertising revenues they earn. Sure.
    Selecting a product is a royal pain anyway. Even when you sit down with various experts, they all have varying opinions and brand loyalties. It's like asking someone which car to buy, you could spend weeks talking with people and never arrive at a solution.
    The good news is that the price of electronic equipment is pretty low these days. Thus, I will probably purchase something within a $200 -$400 price point and take my chances.

      Matthew Jackson Yes it can be difficult to make a decision. Entry level I’d say are below $300 an don’t have deep memory. I also did a video for what I call the full featured scopes with deep memory. See below for links.
      There’s a Siglent 2 channel that has deep memory and all the goodies, so if 2 channels is ok then look at the Siglent SDS1202X-E for around $360, or a great 4 channel with deep memory but doesn’t decode the digital bus like I2C is the GW Instek GDS1054B is on sale around $340.
