I haven’t towed with it yet, but my 1.6 ecoboost transit connect in sport mode will downshift to keep my cruise control speed regulated on downhills. I was amazed.
I think this would be a really interesting series. Not everyone has a full size SUV or truck but they wanna pull a small trailer for traveling. That would really influence what people would buy.
@@sledforpeace completely agree! See which ones keep the temps lower is a great performance index for longevity just like they do on the bigger trucks. Heat kills!
@@nycad2484 completely agree! We have a ‘14 Traverse and ‘15 Pilot. I see people on both forums regularly towing trailers up to 5k loaded weight. Not everyone wants a huge truck or SUV so the crossovers fit the bill. And some, like the Pathfinder and Durango have even higher ratings. Love to see if they prove to be superior at 5k and maybe even push them to their limits and see how they do.
Now do the Santa Cruz, the small Jeeps, the new corolla cross 4x4, the ford Maverick, Bronco Sport, Ford Escape 3 cylinder vs Chevy trailblazer 3 cylinder.
Hope the press cars come with hitches because this test is awesome. Hate to say it, but I guess many will not. Real world tests are great content. Thanks!
The amount of people in groups I'm in that try to tow WAYY more than the car is capable of really terrifies me. Some guy was trying to tow a 22' travel trailer with an equinox. Dear lord.
I love these Ike Gauntlet tests, even when you do regular cars. It illustrates realistically what a vehicle is capable of on mountainous terrain. I still would love to see you guys do the Ike Gauntlet in a Mitsubishi Mirage with at least 2 adults in it and the AC on. Would make for entertaining viewing with a whopping 78hp 3cyl engine and CVT.
We noticed this year that there are a bunch of small campers getting pulled all over. Agree that people rather than buying a different larger vehicle they just buy the little camper. Seen a large variety of little campers.
That button below the center diff lock is a hill descent control button, would be nice to see how that effects brake applications... But we never get to see that in any video.
AWESOME video - very helpful. I’ve towed with an Odyssey & Outback, and now have my 2023 Sportage EX. The problem I discovered is that I have to continuously disengage the automatic braking or I can’t back up when I’m towing/have a cargo tray on. Is this the only way, or can “permanently” disengage the reverse braking assist feature??? It’s frustrating. Thanks so much for your video!
Yes, some folks talk about Kodiak brown bears, and black bears. Here we have a big Russian bear, who crossed over from Russia, and an American Grizzly Bear. ;-)
Thanks for doing this! I'd like to see the Rav4 iterations. My 2016 XLE can tow 1500, the new hybrid can tow 1750 and the new Adventure/TRD can tow 3500!
Now do it with ice laden coolers, 4 bicycles (two tike sized), a bbq grill, sleeping bags, fishing equipment, enough clothes for a month, and folding chairs. You know, a standard load out for car campers.
This is great! Many people tow with vehicles like this and it is good to have information. As someone who tows a boat trailer with a Honda Odyssey, I would love to see a minivan towing comparison. I would also like to see things in the Pilot/Traverse/Highlander/Explorer/Telluride/etc segment or more in the compact CUV segment.
Awesome video! You should do a test run with a truck with the same trailer. That way it sets the benchmark and we get a point of reference to compare all other vehicle to.
Good series with lots of car, xovers to test! May I suggest with the full size and HD truck, tow campers. Like you’d say at the beginning of the vid, campers are what most people are probably towing.
My son and his friend were driving to Frisco, CO to hike the Colorado Trail...they both learned how to drive in Minnesota and had questions about driving in the Rockies.....I showed them some of your Ike Gauntlet videos to show them what to expect since they were driving on I 70 and would be driving through the Eisenhower Tunnel. And they made the trip with no issues at all.
This car is only "tiny" by American tow-car standards. In Europe even Fit/Fiesta size cars are rated to tow 500-800lbs but only below 35-40 mph. Car companies worry here that people won't read the manual and will sue when the inevitable happens so they zero out the tow rating on anything smaller than a *MID-SIZE* crossover like this. (Plus, I'm sure as professional auto journalists you're aware of just how profitable pickups are...)
@@-.__.__.-Rad Yeah the 21 mpg combined was shocking. My 2021 F-150 has 24 MPG combined, waaaay more power, and far more comfortable. Obviously a full size truck is more expensive, but it’s far heavier. I don’t get that mileage.
I have been waiting for this type testing with subcompact, compact and 3 row crossovers. I know that you tried it a couple years ago but not fully like you did here. Since outside of trucks 🛻 the next highest selling segment is compact/mid size crossovers it makes sense to do these tests. Many people want to tow small trailers with boats, atvs, side by sides, jet skis and small campers or uhaul box trailers behind them.
Will you guys be judging the side mirrors for towing or just assuming pretty much any mirror size and placement should be good for any kind of towing like this?
Please do similarly test with Model Y. You can compare price of energy/fuel (instead of MPG). Would be interesting to see how it does in downhill - if you need to use brakes or regenerative braking would be enough (ie, do you need to use brakes at all). Also, given it charges on the way down - mpg/cost for trip should be much lower than gas car.
Maybe it's high time that someone from a certain Japanese car manufacturer to shut his/her mouth about TFL and finally give TFL another chance to review their USDM cars. Just saying.
Man, it did well on the Ike which is great, but that 21 MPG combined is atrocious. My 2021 F-150 PB has 24 MPG, and my real world mileage has been at or above that (have had some shorter, around 10-20 mile city trips, where I was close to 30). This isn’t to compare full size truck to a CUV, I just can’t imagine giving up so much interior comfort and power, to also get worse fuel mileage.
I'm looking at a 36to 40 foot Montana 5th wheel, your correct about units sold. The prices are insane, 60k is the one I looked at last spring, now they are listed for 93k!!!! Pure RIP off. But grea tvideo team, and fun group. I like lil more of these 2, lil less Tommy in every video please. Just like to see other employees as well
Been waiting for crossover towing tests... Wanting to see the mid-sizers tow (Explorer, Pilot, etc). C'mon, manufacturers, put some tow packages on your press cars!
This test is super relevant to me and my growing family because we have an 8' pop up and plan to be living in Colorado next spring. Any chance of doing the same test with a late-model minivan? We own a 2018 Pacifica, and it would be cool to see how it tows over the Ike before we get out there.
I don’t get the point of counting brake applications going down the hill. In the absence of using cruise control, or a tow haul mode with programmed grade shifting, you are not asking the vehicle to slow you down using engine braking.
there's a new 2022 Sportage coming up based on the new Tucson platform... I think it would be best to test that model more than this old and outgoing model
I'm glad this series is underway! There are a lot of interesting contenders. Ask Lincoln for a Corsair with AWD and the 2.3EB!
We love our Sportage. Front and rear limited slip and a center locking diff.
Outstanding cars.
The Sportage is a nice compact SUV, especially without a CVT.
I haven’t towed with it yet, but my 1.6 ecoboost transit connect in sport mode will downshift to keep my cruise control speed regulated on downhills. I was amazed.
Impressive how far Hyundai/Kia have progressed.
Great idea for a series!
Then do one with the midsize three rows (Pilot, Highlander, etc.) with 5000 lbs travel trailers.
Yes but add an OBD reader so you can have the trans temp while climbing

Thankyou for showing smaller crossovers and stuff on towing tests, this is what I’ve been waiting for
Thank you for finally doing this! I've been waiting for an Ike with smaller vehicles for years!
Can't wait to see the Maverick on here.
Now do the Santa Cruz, the small Jeeps, the new corolla cross 4x4, the ford Maverick, Bronco Sport, Ford Escape 3 cylinder vs Chevy trailblazer 3 cylinder.
I can't wait until the Kia Sportage gets the new 2.5l Turbo, it should be a very nice upgrade from the 2.0l Turbo
Ah yes. My two favorite TFL personalities
Hope the press cars come with hitches because this test is awesome. Hate to say it, but I guess many will not. Real world tests are great content. Thanks!
I like this concept. I have an F-150, but I also have a CRV. I could see a family trip where both need to tow something.

Add to this test an OBD reader so you can rear the transmission temp while towing.
My wife and I bought a Sportage..2021...and we're very happy with it. But I guess towing a trailer full of brick pavers is out lol
The lil kids car on the back🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

You guys need to do a towing test with the Telluride/pallisade! Nobody yet has a towing review on TH-cam

Love the testing on the Ike, and bringing in a wider range of vehicles truly makes it more appealing. Great job.
More towing videos like this please!
This gauntlet series will be very helpful to alot of husband's...now the wife's car can can be capable too hahaha

$37000......21mpg combined..... sportage is tiny... 👌🏆👍?

Do the Outback XT with 3500lb max.

Sportage has always been a pretty good little vehicle. Wish it still had the old longitudinal drivetrain setup, but seems to still work pretty well!
@footballcoreano the Sportage is in the compact SUV segment. So, yes! 🙂
We still in uk dnt have ur app..any idea wen it will be available across the pond..??tx u again guys for doing a fantastic job..love u guys ..xx
You guys should test out some hybrids like the highlander hybrid and others on the tike Ike I love this content!
How about the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid for this test? And yes it has a real transmission rather than a CVT.
Nathan's intros have been funny as hell lately
Makes me want a Kia now
I like how Nathan is showing his face more and sounds like he is trying to make more entertainment love it
I want you guys to start a baby Ike!!! Toyota RAV4, small cuv tests!
Tike Ike VW Jetta Sportwagen with TDI 6 Speed manual!!!! Let’s see it !! #Nathan Rocks

looking forward to more in this series
I have a 2016 Mazda3 I’ve set up to tow. I’d love to bring it on the Tike Ike even if I gotta do it myself!
Could you also try minivans in this mix as an extra
Can you please review the 2020 Blazer 4 cylinder turbo thanks
Do more Sportage tests
Would love to see more of these... Especially for the Subaru Crosstrek or Impreza
“I wanted to ask you about stability” Real world tests, slam on the brakes emergency style at 60 mph. Go on I dare you.
This will be an awesome series! I've seen little CUVs towing all the time and thought it was a disaster waiting to happen.
More tike ike please!
the next one up will have to be the hyundai santa cruz 2.5t
I love the idea of the Tike Ike keep up the fantastic work
I wanna see how bad your 2.0 cvt Crosstrek does haha. The first gen I had struggled up the ike with just two people and snowboard gear.
Maybe it's high time that someone from a certain Japanese car manufacturer to shut his/her mouth about TFL and finally give TFL another chance to review their USDM cars. Just saying.
Too bad Nathan sold the Samurai. Would love to see Sammy vs The Loaf Tyke Like.

Bronco Sport Badlands vs. Jeep Compass Trail Hawk.

Nice like that. Now need one on the new Mitsubishi Outlander towing
Do the fuel economy next tike ike
Try a Kia telluride
Do the Jeep Cherokee next
Only in the US is the Sportage considered a small car.
I’d be interested in small SUV’s like the Equinox, Escape, and RAV4 to see how they compare to midsized SUV’s.
Hi TFL how about the long term crosstrek
Do you have a video towing with a 2006 ford explorer?
Can you do the cx9 2.5 turbo ?
It’s about time for another episode…..the new model is out.
You should Tike Ike The 2021 VW Tiguan
Whatever Nathan is on , I want .
Love his personality .
Can you guys please tow with the new cx5 NA

Usain Bolt still couldn't run fast enough to give me a Kia.
The smallest trailer in US I bet. Some European countries sell these things, but America?! 😁
there's a new 2022 Sportage coming up based on the new Tucson platform... I think it would be best to test that model more than this old and outgoing model
Here in the Netherlands it's normal to pull with cars even smaller than that with a trailer heavier than that 🤣🤣🤣🤣
My lawnmower can pull that all day long. Don't want a blowed the motor kia either. 🤯
Santa Cruz
the audio sucks on the uphill !
That Sportage costs over $37k? 😂😂😂
It also has a panoramic sunroof and ventilated seats.
I know right, what a steal! Better value than anyother fully loaded car of the same class
This brand new, 2yr old Kia Sportage.
Terrible sound on this video guys. Love the new concept though. Hope to see more of this series.
It looks almost exactly like a Ford Escape from the front.
Wait my Ecoboostmustang can tow that!
A Kia Sportage can tow???
Cool 😀
No decible check? what the cuss.
Wish you went way over the tow rating show how dangerous it is
so other idiots on the roads stop doing it
