@@sleep_sounds No, I saw them live in 1987. The other video must be an off night. They really did sound as good as this. They did a two and a half hour show with Tower of Power and I did not hear a single mistake or bad note from a single musician on stage.
@@admiralbob77 when you are live it is loud and through big speakers, it makes you think it sounds amazing… and it kind of does. But every band that has a live album is at least mixed in a studio with most of them having mistakes fixed or parts sweetened. Its just how it works in the industry. Ive been a part of these live recordings as a musician and a producer, trust me, it gets mixed in a studio and overdubs happen.
I think in "Heart and Soul" the guitars sound kind of out of sync with eachother
Bill Gibson was SUCH an underrated drummer. Every beat, every night, so tight. Been a drummer for 30+ years and still love playing his stuff. So fun and fulfilling. Made 4-4 playing truly exciting.
Why was? He still is!

thats a mouthful of TRUTH There Buddy !!! as a kid I saw my 1st electric guitar, instantly feel in Love with it, bought it with my news paper route money, havent looked back ever since, its been a crazy Life, Learning how to play the guitar is no easy taask, not by a long shot !! but when you,ve got a completed song list of 20 or so songs, that you loved hearing on the radio, and now can play those songs on your guitar not to mention, teaching yourself , by going to the Library taking out books on learning how to play the guitar for dummies, plus watching as many video,s as possible, seemed almost impossible, I refused to give up, my song list hit 21, walking up on a stage in a club filled with about 100 or so half drunks, an half dressed girls, made every second of study well worth it, IDK, some people seem to pick up on how to play right qwik, without too much trouble, it wasnt that easy for me, one thing i should have used during my self teaching yrs, was a metronome, which I never had one, the 1st time I used one, it instantly increased my ability , I couldnt believe how that thing helped my playing so much, everything went into over drive , i was learning songs faster than ever, an even adding my own twist into it, i was able to make all the music I played my Bitch, lol, so to anyone out there having a difficult time teaching your self how to play, get these 2 things, an SC-1 clip/on strobe tuner, and a metronome, and a few chord books, that includes scales/patterns,ETC: you,ll be forming your own band within a year, but dont sit around dreaming about it, or jerking off, dedicate your self to play everyday for 8 to 10 hrs, if not everyday 5 or more will work, stay consistent, dont play one day for 8 hrs and wait a month to pick your guitar up again, you might as well sell it, that behavior is just wasting time, if you cant commit to 5 to 7 days a wek 8 to 10 hrs a day, teaching/studying your self, you,ll never get there, be honest to your self, if its what you LOVE, then dive in head first !! otherwise move on to something you do LOVE to do, at 9 yrs old I knew I LOVED THE GUITAR and wanted to play it, that in its self is a job, just finding out what its going to take to make sense of this thing made of wood, and has 6 steel strings, but looks super cool !! but then here comes the real trick, is learning how to play going to be super cool ? HELL YEAH !! especially in the long run, itll be well worth it, if you do decide I want to learn how to play the guitar, if you can afford an instructor cool, thatll be a great help, but if youwere like me, no money, except what I made from my paper route cash , I couldnt afford a teacher, getting into clubs with live bands was a help, id watch the bands guitarist and watched what he did with his fingers on the fret board, they probably thought I was crazy,LOL, I did I could to learn how to get down and really play this the electric guitar, the COOLEST THING ON EARTH !!! an get up on stage and have an AWESOME TIME !! GO FOR IT !! W/H/W/ 7/16/24
It is very impressive how Huey's live vocals are basically exactly the same as the studio recordings.
Somehow they IMPROVED them. 😳

Dammit I want the 80's back. Great memories of Huey Lewis and especially spinning 'Sports' on vinyl.
They were at the top of their game for this concert, and the Tower of Power horns just make it that much better, especially on "Workin' For A Livin'" and "I Want A New Drug".
And of course, Mario Cipollina. Coolest. Bass. Player. Ever.
When I was a kid, this album was huge! Easily one of my all-time favs. Such a talented band.

In 1984 I was in sixth grade. My teacher was the mother of the saxophonist JONNY COLLA. Mrs Colla Was my teacher and every year johnny came to her class to meet all the students I got to meet him that year. And he was very famous and it was such a big deal.
Now that's what a concert should do. The whole place is with the music. Huey you are the heart of rock and roll. Thank you for showing the world what a real concert is!!!!!!!

I think of my father whenever I hear Huey Lewis. He was a musician at one point in his life, and taught me the value of going in every day, working hard and doing the best you can. HLN was a "working" band, in that they stuck with the same lineup for years, avoided drama and kept refining their material to the point where they were one of the tightest bands of the '80s.
How do they get that many musicians to sound so tight ...and blended? A musical triumph for the ages.
Lots of heart, talent and practice. And a rare mix of a band at least somewhat getting along. This band is a rare treat for humanity.
it's called musicianship. you actually play the instrument every day of your life and you become good at it and then you play with the same band members every day for a decade and you play the same songs every day and this is what you get. back in the day... not anymore

Huey Lewis and the News were my first concert. It was around this time, but at the Cow Palace in SF. At the opening, Huey was lowered onto the stage in a cable car replica during Heart of Rock n Roll. So badass.
Such a great group of musicians! Being a bass geek, I wanted to be as smooth as Mario. Haha. I remember being impressed by Hayes’ guitar solos. Definitely some chops there.
Anyone that hates on this band, just doesn’t get it, man. More for us.

The sax solo in Trouble In Paradise is the best solo in rock history. Period.
The Marc Russo one? It's absolute greatness but you should check out the various TH-cam versions of Marc playing with the Doobies on "Long Train Running". The altissimo work is other-worldly.

Ah.....harken to the days when performers had talent, and loved what they did, Huey and his News are in a class of their own....they all sing, play more than one instrument when needed, and genuinely have a good time on stage. Huey is one of my all time favorite harmonizing bands to boost my spirit when i've had a trying day and need chilling out, Hoping he will create another album..... I'll buy it in a heartbeat!!
They actually released a new album a few months back called 'Weather' (an indirect continuation of 'Sports'!). A Pretty good album, with great songs that it's as if they're meant to fit into any demographic out there! However, it's not meant to sound like their 80s stuff.
It's still the closest they've sounded to what they did in their hayday since.. 1991's 'Hard At Play'!
They've been touring all these years, and have released 3 more albums since the early 90s (1994, 2001, 2010) that even though they're extraordinary in every single way, while having the HLN soul, musicianship, playing, they lacked the classic HLN sound of their first few albums.
Their new album (that unfortunately only has 7 songs, due to issues with Huey's hearing) is a 'true' Huey Lewis & The News album!
@@christosstamato527 awesome Chris.....thanks for the update, I try to keep myself informed of my favorite bands upcoming material and performances especially the older bands where the members are aging and/or dying off and may not be around much longer like AC/DC ( who I have never seen live, but if they tour for the Power-up album, it might be my last chance to see them in their most complete original lineup since Back In Black)....but somehow I didn't know about all that Huey was up to lately, I guess maybe lack of press coverage. I'll have to look for that Huey album, it sounds like it's a good one. I'll have to look it up and see when they're coming to the city of Chicago again. I'll have to Buy me some tickets ASAP...... assuming we ever get live concerts again with this Corona crap lingering around.
I have been listening to Huey Lewis and the in all my life and they are my favorite. Watching their concert in you tube lift my spirit and will never get tired of listening to them. They are and will always be number 1 in my book. Epic.
They are the tightest band I have ever heard. All of them always perfectly on beat and never miss a note and they all give 100% every song. Great musicianship

He's great. Humble too. I was supposed to see him perform live in Clear Lake, CA in 2003. He had a health crisis & the show was cancelled. He did survive, thank goodness. I almost certainly will never be able to see a live show of his. Too bad for me. For whatever reason, I perceive him as a blend of the styles of Tower of Power & Robert Palmer. All 3 so sweet & out there with their music. Always a fan. Best wishes Wuey.

The coolest thing about Huey was when they approached him they wanted to get rid of Bill Gibson, the drummer, and Huey said no way, I wish I could find guys commiited like that. Long live the news!!!

Very excited to find this. Many, many years ago, I found this in my local video rental store. I played in on my "HI-FI" stereo VHS player and recorded the soundtrack onto a cassette tape. I was the only one around to own this audio track. I had forgotten about it till I came upon it this morning. Thanks for posting.

Huey Lewis is a freaking beast!
They stand the test of time and just seem better and better...great harmonies , tight arrangements, great songs and..........CHRIS HAYES... always takes the song to exalted levels. As a guitarist, he is unique and he always inspires...rockin', funky, tasty, fiery and very melodic and harmonically knowledgeable. Stef Burns is a great player in his own right, but , for me just doesn't quite have the magic and charisma that Chris has. Thank you Chris for your eternal inspiration!
I think this is one of the best and tightest HLN concerts I have ever seen!! I have been to several of their live concerts ( always great) and watched most of the others on cd or you tube and this one just leaves me with an extra super natural high!!! I have loved hueys music since he was in a band called Clover. Thanks so much for the upload!!!!!!!!!

The drummer seems cool. Like an appliance salesman, or a TV sales guy. All these guys represent good taste and not trying to outplay each other.
They were incredibly tight and represented some great musicianship. They complimented each others sound very well without trying to steal the spotlight, thats why they sound so great. And all of them had something interesting about them. Bill Gibson (drummer) always look like he had a nerdish tennis player look to me, Mario (bassit) had the stereotypical bad boy image, etc.

Totally! I remember wondering at times if the drums on "Fore!" were sequenced, and then he breaks into a great fill and dispels any doubt that it's real. I see these guys live for the first time in a week and a half. :)

The concert was an absolute pleasure - and sorry for my late reply. Great sounds and vibes filling the green valley in the New Zealand countryside. A little sad that Chris and Mario were not in the line-up, but I cannot complain about the quality of the show!
What's the old saying?...."Fills give the thrills, but a groove pays the bills!". Gibson lays down the groove like a clock.
HLN have always been a band with class! From their clothes to their music. More bands of all genre should take a lesson from them.
It never hurts to augment your band with the TOP horns! What a dream combo.
