Sorin you're a genius! After replacing the keyboard/touchpad on my Asus X555LA laptop the touchpad stopped working whenever I installed the Asus Smart Gesture drivers. I spent hours debugging it before I came across this video. A simple BIOS reset did the trick! Thanks for all the hard work and effort you put in on the channel. Much appreciated!!!

You saved my day... actually 3 days!! Resetting the BIOS did the trick, after discovering that the Lenovo laptop had to be shut down before pushing the button with a paper clip. Keep showing what you know on TH-cam!

I've been trying to sort out this issue all day. All the search results said check Drivers, Device Manager, etc. I even tried to resort to a hard factory reset! But now I tried pulling out the battery exactly as you described and my god did it work!

    It is no magic here.
Touchpad in modern notebooks have two modes. Usually named "simple" (or basic) and "advanced". Simple mode emulating ps/2 mouse. Advanced mode uses i2c protocol and support gestures and other good things. But advanced mode required special serial driver installed (Serial IO Driver). Windows will not try to install driver itself. Sometimes the mode randomly switches but not all BIOS have the visual switch. When you reset the BIOS you also reset touchpad mode. Updating BIOS and installing proper driver solves the issue and gives control over the touchpad modes in BIOS.
This issue also caused by some latest Win 10 updates. Reinstalling Serial IO Driver solve the problem. Intel Serial IO Driver have "Repair" option in installer. It is not work. Only uninstall and install again.

thanks for the explanation. but shouldn't still work in simple movements mode? I wonder how device manager detects it or how was the setting in bios.
PS: not a fan of plain "load default settings" as might switch off the disks ahci mode leading to no boot like might be the case of @Anoot Napi or inexperienced users, boot order or other settings that better leave off.

Your summary at the end was perfect, but you didn't do a reboot in the video itself.... Remember with windows 8+ fast boot on, restart and shutdown are not equal. One thing I also saw once, plug in an external mouse.... once windows loaded up the driver for THAT mouse the track pad started working, and it kept working after unplugging the mouse. Not sure if that works often enough that it's worth mentioning, but if you have an external mouse handy, that might be the quickest solution.

The touch pad / track pad is connected to the EC/ Super IO chip , that's why removing the battery reset the EC/ Super IO chip , windows 10 update drivers all the time and could cause the track pad /touch pad to stop working , Nice fix

Old Toshiba Portege 2000 laptop. Touchpad works only with soft move and often respond randomly. How to fix it? Clean resistive touch inside would help or needs replacing? It is old Alps touchpad component.

wow i have to be getting old because i never realized that the new Lenovo laptops allowed you to enter the BIOS setup by pushing in a pin on the side of the unit.

Making it harder and harder for computers to be repaired. I like the old computers. A lot of it is to do with a new UEFI bios. You can access the BIOS within the operating system. It will reboot the computer into the BIOS.
