Thanks for the tutorial this worked. Wouldn’t recommend unplugging the battery to anyone wanting to tighten/loosen the retention screw for the trackpad, simply unscrew the battery screws and lift it gently up for access.

      No I would recommend unplugging
even after powering down machine, there is current still in the circuit
can cause static damage to components if they come in contact with ur hand
its much better to unplug battery to remove chance of such damage
I mean yes there is still residual charge after unplugging the battery but much less probable to cause damage

Thanks, your video inspired me to do this thorough fix. It was actually much easier to fix on my HP - no glued joints, just screws. Turns out my battery was swollen and that was contributing to the problem. New battery ordered.

Thank you for this video. It has helped me when I needed to find out what was wrong with my touchpad. Although, it was not the same problem it was similar in a way. It turns out that the one clickers at the opposite end of the touchpad had came off due to me applying to much pressure on the touchpad. I have a question. I LOVE you easy to follow instructions. I have an HP Pavillion 15-cs1xxx laptop on which the touchpad is not functioning correctly. I live in a high dust area and opened it up a week ago and cleaned it out thoroughly and reassembled. Some features now function but others do not. The rocker/click function is not working; the long side of the touchpad near me is pushed all the way down and it doesn't rock/click. I cannot right click with it nor highlight. After watching your video I went ahead and opened it back up but went a little deeper as you did in your video and took the actual pad out and cleaned around the edges; I did find the small computer connection lock was not down so I corrected that and reassembled it. Same problem exists; no rocker/click function (long closest to me is still down) and cannot highlight or right click. Suggestions? THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Go to a hardware store. You'll be able to find a small screwdriver with 20+ attachments (assortment of small flathead, phillips, and t's) for a couple dollars. A razor blade should be 20 cents. Small dollar bottle of rubbing alcohol, and you can get inside just about any laptop

Do you think this is still likely the problem? Clicking in the middle of the pad still will click a window or select things. Clicking on the right still gets me a right click. I hope you don't mind if I post my solution. I have had to do this a couple times a year for the past two years. So people may want to try it before tearing into the laptop or paying to have it fixed.
When my mouse pad gets stuck down and won't work, I use a Q-tip with a little alcohol on it and run it around the mouse pad. Then I use a scalpel tip and run the tip around the outside of the mousepad just barely going into the edge. Then I lift up the pad with the tip of the scalpel. Using the Q-tip one more time, I run it around the mousepad edge again. This works for my Dell. I think dirt and grime gets in around the mouse pad and causes the sticking.
    Good luck!
I think you could also use a small suction cup like you put on glass windows to lift the stuck mouse pad also. I have not tried it yet but it has to be safer than a scalpel or razor blade.
