    That was really great to see, Paul, particularly the last bit about the connections, cheers for that. I hope you will show how your patch bay rear is physically connected to your audio interface, etc., as well

    Just what I was after. I'm upgrading my interface to an M-Audio 8x4 (2 outputs would be for my monitor, and the other 2 would be for outboard gear, through a patch bay)

    Thanks Paul! Pinging for latency is super important in LPX! A Louder Than Liftoff Silver Bullet has made its way onto my master bus. I see Kempers everywhere... maybe I should demo one (finally). Keep up the great work on this channel.

I literally just watched my first video of yours today, the video you released today on making samples sound bad, and then thought ‘I wonder if Paul does anything on using outboard?’ And there this was! Also if you haven’t seen them you should check out the Chase Bliss Audio pedals, they are simply amazing, especially the Thermae! Get one up on Christian haha

    Hey Paul, nice to see. Those Distressor has a interesting way of mangling out the room in that drum loop.
    I/O works so smooth in Logic. Just wished Pro Tools had as easy integration. The similar I/O plugin doesn't work quite as it should for me. Maybe something you'll get into in part 2...

    • @PaulThomsonMusic
      @PaulThomsonMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Corner - yes the Distressors are so versatile.. I'll do some quick tip videos on Protools - its an essential part of using music tech imho - there are still some things on Protools that are so much easier than on other DAWs - but I agree Logic has it nailed for the IO just for easily visible stuff!

    • @amnesiasounds

      You can set this up in ProTools, in the IO page you have to declare your inserts via the insert page and then you can select I/O from the insert options on a channel within protools, you can even have things pre-named for you. Works like a charm

    Great video Paul! The patchbay part, I think, could benefit a little more from some examples of the "theory" i practice - it felt, compared to the 12 minutes of outboard demonstration before, sort of rushed...

    Thanks for another great video. One question I hope you can shed some light on: What about impedance when using guitar effects pedal? Do they react ok to a normal line level audio signal, or do you need to convert it to the high impedance I think they expect to see?

  • @brianstecklermusic
    @brianstecklermusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wired my last studio with a nice patchbay thinking I'd end up moving this direction, and ended up migrating the other direction. I just never felt like the hassle of routing out and in and printing and yada yada, plus the cost of the gear itself could "beat" the exact same sets of processes I could do in the box. Especially these days with wealth of modeling options (I just got the Slate VRS8 and ML-2 mics, after having owned an ML-1 for a couple years... it's ridiculous.). Plus, then I have the ability to automate those effects, and easily go back later in the production and adjust.
    I do understand the "science experiment" part of it though... and miss it a little. Plus flashing lights are cool. ;)
    Anyone in the US need a nice 1U 48 pt long frame patchbay? It's punch block... NO SOLDERING!

  • @damion2226
    @damion2226 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love it Christian, but the patch bay stuff is a bit confusing for luddites like me who look at it like it's a Rubik's Cube. Would you consider doing a beginners guide to using a patch bay? Right now I just use a Pigtronix Keymaster for simple outboard processing and sampling but would love to eventually move up to a bay. Thanks

    Paul, do I need a reamp box to use my guitar pedal as outboard gear?

    • @Middlestepofficial
      @Middlestepofficial 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, given that you're going from your pedal to your amp. If you're going from your pedal to your interface directly and then use amp sims, then there's no reason why you would reamp.

    Yesssss. Thank you so much, Paul. My one question relates to the guitar pedals. Specifically, are they all wired into the ART clean box, which is then wired to one stereo in/out in the patchbay? Or does each one have its own in/out on the patchbay, and they each have their own ART box? Or am I misunderstanding entirely?

    • @PaulThomsonMusic
      @PaulThomsonMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dan - its simpler - I just have that Art box wired to the patchbay like any other unit - then if I want to use it on any effect I simply cable it in via the patchbay - so from IO output to Art in, Art out to pedal in, pedal out to IO in.

    Please could you explain about the step up and step down of audio levels, to move in and out of the box ? Do you work at -18rms levels throughout the mix, or use gain plugins to drop levels when patching in the analog equipment to the daw please ? Digital dbfs levels are too hot for analog equipment to handle

    I love using a Supro amp for reamping, the spring reverb in that thing sounds good on everything.
    I would be interested to hear what you make of the Helix Paul. Is it part of your outboard, or are you just trialing it out?

    • @PaulThomsonMusic
      @PaulThomsonMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sam - I've just bought the Helix so I'm still working my way through it to find what I like - I'll do a future vid on that one! Its got to get plugged in over the next few weeks. So far I'm loving the delays and compressors in it - nice sound and a bit different from anything else I've got

    • @samshrimpton407
      @samshrimpton407 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Thomson Thanks Paul, that would be great! I’m thinking about getting one for the routing possibilities. Mixing guitar hardware with the onboard stuff; but as you have some really nice guitar processing options already, it’ll be interesting to see what you make of it, and how it ends up in your workflow. Maybe a cool secondary use as a floor controller for Spitfire libraries?

    Wow what a great video! I monitor through a headphone quarter inch and I have stereo out trs on the back of my apollo solo as well as stereo hybrid inputs (Trs or XLR). Provided I don’t connect monitors I can still perform this type of outboard mixing, correct? Also, after using the I/O plug in how do you print the changes you tweaked on the hardware unit?

    Very good video, thanks! I have a couple of questions: 1) Why did you use two distressors but just one 1176? 2) Do you have any issues with background noise (hum/hiss etc) coming from your units? I like using my Warm Audio EQP-WA's for mastering but I always encounter that problem.

    Hi Paul, great video. I was wondering, would you say that having a patch bay is necessary for someone who only has a few outboard gear items, say 1 compressor, 1 EQ and an audio interface. Can this all be done just through an interface with lots of inputs?

  • @arronmungul1990
    @arronmungul1990 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you, Paul. Building the courage to hook up my patch bay, but this helps! Do you use stereo cables (e.g. for synths) into your patchbay, or is it better to use individual mono cables for L and R?

  • @CLELDKFKEJ

    What is your reasoning for using 2 distressors? How do you have the kemper and Axe fx hooked up into the patch bay? Also lastly, how do I hook this up over all into my interface? OUT Interface IN Patchbay, Back IN to interface? Sorry, I'm new to outboard studio things

    I still don't understand how a patch-bay connects. I have an Apogee Ensemble Thunderbolt, and it has 2 send/returns on ch 1 & 2. How do I patch in external effects on multiple channels? Does the patch bay connect through ADAT or Optical to have a lot of I/O? Or is it just that you use 2 inserts and everything chains through those?
