    The live drums really add to the track, especially the cymbals. Rocking Paul 🤘

    I thought it was a very powerful piece and I liked it a lot lol.
    For some reason, I never do guitar work with orchestral but I should do as it all fit so well.
    Putting brass through fx like that is another great idea.
    It's a bit like the Wonder Woman theme, people think that's a guitar but it's Tina Guo on an electric cello through fx.
    Great track.

    Instantly thought of mission impossible main theme, which incidently uses 5/4 as well.

    Tight drumming! But you might want to loosen up the arms and not only use the wrist.
    Another thing, to get a deeper bass drum sound is to not bury the beater in the skin. That muffles all resonances making the kick sound very stiff.
    But you already know all this : )

  • @cornerliston
    @cornerliston 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another way of getting a very narly bass synth sound from the Mini is to have the use the filter overdrive feature. Again, you already know this... (sorry for my annoying comments) : )

    Haha, love that track! Hope this is a sign of a resurgence of the guitar solo! If reampings your thing, could not recommend the modern Supro’s highly enough! They have some kind of magic that sets them apart from the Vox’s or Fenders IMHO. Often put strings through mine, and then mute the original track entirely. Probably not ideal for orchestral mockups, but perfect vintage flavours for a bit of trip-hop, or a kind of retro vibe.

      Sam Shrimpton thanks Sam!! Ooh I’ll have to check out the Supros... I have looked at them a couple of times but never tried one!

      Paul Thomson No probs Paul 😊 Supro’s are absolutely stonking! I tried out a few Princtons, an AC30 and a Mark V 25 with some of the Supro reissues from 2016 or so, when I bought mine and my ears loved the Supro’s tone and verb over the others. They were all great amps for sure, but the Supro’s had something extra. I picked the Saturn Reverb, which sits in between a Bluesbreaker and a Princeton tone wise. Thick like a Marshall, but still retains some glassyness (if thats counts as a word) like a Fender. Cleans are just buttery smooth and the saturation on the edge of breakup is to die for. Hands down the best amp I’ve ever played. Loses a little of its magic if you plug anything in front of it in the signal chain though. I’ve tried creating a reamp emulation of it in the Helix a few times, for late night recording. I can get roughly in the ballpark, its not bad, but its never the same.

    For some reason I have never considered re-amping symphonic stuff. Thanks for the tip!
    The drums sound great in that room. I wouldn’t mind hearing more of it.
    When the lead guitar enters I am reminded of the Slovenian band Devil Doll. They are very much an acquired taste. It probably took me ten listens before I enjoyed them, but once I got over the oddness of the Schoenberg style gesprechensang (spelling?) I absolutely loved it (including the vocals). Try the album Dies Irae. Shostakovich meets rock band?

  • @apaivab

    Thanks for your kindness Paul, neat video as always. Two requests: 1) could you please even out the levels of the music vs your voice, or maybe compress it, you tend to naturally speak very softly at the end of phrases and as non-native English speaker I really have to turn it up a lot to understand and then when music enters…you get the idea. 2) A quick search of the hardware price to replicate this idea is over $13,500 without the Vox, probably over budget for the average film composer. Do you think this idea is possible with software emulations? Something like Klevgrand Reamp or Waves CLA Guitars? Blessings.

    • @distortingjack
      @distortingjack 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      100% possible with just amp emulations. The best one at the moment is Neural DSP Plini, although I do fine with Amplitube 4 and Scuffham S-Gear. You couldn't make out the difference between them and real amps in a mix.

    HA! I went to a Helix as well. I'm not one to believe the hype of new gear generally however, I think Line 6 knocked it out of the park with a Helix. Im pretty happy with it.

    • @PaulThomsonMusic
      @PaulThomsonMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Raul Torres Jr. Music hi Raul - yes the helix has some great stuff .. also I’ve started experimenting with loading mic/cab IRs as well - you can really shape the sound

    • @RTJ_Music
      @RTJ_Music 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Thomson me too I’ve also started hard panning and running separate cab models. One on hard Left other on Hard right with different delays giving a different ping pong effect. Works brilliantly.

  • @PhilipValdesMusic
    @PhilipValdesMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can experiment with mic placement for mono micing the drums to get the cymbals to sit better. Putting the mic close to the ground will get more of the drums and a bit less of the cymbals and you can eq out some of the boominess if you need to. Or even stick the mic between the cymbals and drums and let the cardioid pickup pattern do the work for you. Sounds great though!

    Great video Paul, as usual! What about brass "fake" re-amping in the daw (guitar rig or similar)? Is it worth a try? P. S. We really need an electric/acoustic guitar library from Spitfire 🙏

      @PaulThomsonMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Edoardo Simeone thanks Edoardo! Sure fake reamping is all good too! We’ve not gone to the guitar world - at least not beyond “Ambient Guitars” which also has some cool distorted stuff in!

    Nice vid! Curious to hear how you go about making stems, if you are running the mix bus through outboard gear. Or do you only use this processing when you know you won't need to make stems?

    • @PaulThomsonMusic
      @PaulThomsonMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ian Hultquist thanks Ian! Generally I’d only use this combo when I’m not stemming - but if I am stemming I’d still process the individual stems with eq and the MAS - just very little (or no) compression.
