IF BOTH WINDOWS AND SQL SERVER AUTHENTICATION ARE DISABLE HOW TO ENABLE BOTH
If both SQL Server Authentication and Windows Authentication are disabled and you cannot access the SQL Server instance, you’ll need to follow a process to regain access and enable authentication modes. Here’s how to handle the situation when neither authentication method works:
1. Start SQL Server in Single-User Mode
Since both authentication modes are disabled, you need to start SQL Server in Single-User Mode to get administrative access and re-enable authentication.
Steps to start SQL Server in Single-User Mode:
1. Stop the SQL Server Service:
Open SQL Server Configuration Manager.
Under SQL Server Services, right-click on the SQL Server instance you want to manage and click Stop.
2. Run SQL Server in Single-User Mode:
Open a Command Prompt with Administrator privileges.
Navigate to the SQL Server binary path, typically something like:
cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL15.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Binn\"
(Change the path based on your SQL Server version and instance name).
Start SQL Server in Single-User Mode by running the following command:
sqlservr.exe -m
3. Connect to SQL Server in Single-User Mode:
Open SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).
Use Windows Authentication to connect to the server. Since the server is running in Single-User Mode, only one connection is allowed, so ensure SSMS connects successfully.
2. Enable SQL Server and Windows Authentication Mode
Once connected in Single-User Mode, follow these steps to enable SQL Server Authentication and Windows Authentication:
1. In SSMS, right-click on the server in Object Explorer and choose Properties.
2. Go to the Security page.
3. Under Server Authentication, select SQL Server and Windows Authentication Mode (Mixed Mode Authentication).
4. Click OK.
3. Restart SQL Server
After making the change, go back to SQL Server Configuration Manager and restart the SQL Server service to exit Single-User Mode and apply the new authentication settings:
Right-click on your SQL Server instance and click Start.
4. Enable the "sa" Account and Set Password
Open SSMS again, connect to your instance, and enable the sa account if needed:
Navigate to Security → Logins.
Right-click on the sa account and choose Properties.
Under the Status page, ensure Login is set to Enabled.
Set a strong password for the account in the General tab.
5. Verify and Test Access
Once everything is enabled:
Test both Windows Authentication and SQL Server Authentication using SSMS to ensure everything is working properly.
Good one - Thanks
