      It's the same pedal down to the same transistor/opamp/whatever. The authentic one might - or might not - have better quality components (stricter tolerances, more durability). I don't know and that's why I bought the East River Drive. The slight variation in the top end is likely caused by a difference in potentiometer maximum resistance. It's typical for potentiometers to have 10-20% tolerance so that e.g. for 500Kohm pot the value is really between 400K and 600K. Typically it's 0-10% off the nominal. Super nerdy effects builders probaby test and bin their components before assembly to get more consistency but for mass produced pedals that's not reasonable. If you took a few genuine items off the shelf it could be that you would find greater difference between them than to an EHX clone. These slight variations might be a reason why people hunt tone by switching pedals back and forth. They waste time and money searching while they could just switch a few components inside the box.

  • @jesperbc
    @jesperbc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Dunes sounds great, love the versatility of tone, although I don't think you could ever go wrong with the classic circuit. I have a Maxon OD808 on my live board. It's a great boost and an amazing overdrive.

    • @ThePedalBored
      @ThePedalBored  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Maxon is the same as the TS808, right? Maxon was the factory where the original Ibanez pedals were made?

  • @DavidRFIT
    @DavidRFIT 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    The truth is, a TS is a very very simple circuit and everyone with a bit of brains can replicate it 100%. I own a spare Behringer TO800 and it sounds spot-on line a TS808. And I paid it 20€ NEW (not joking). My favorite inexpensive TS clone, though, is the Hardwire CM-2 (the model when it was still called Hardwire and not Digitech): the normal mode is 100% TS808 clone as well, then it has a "modified" mode where the gain goes up A LOT while not muffling the sound like the Mooer does. And you can find it used for like 40€/$.

    • @UlfricRedstorm
      @UlfricRedstorm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I bought a Behringer TO800 out of curiosity after the JHS video on Behringers. It sounds EXACTLY the same as a 150$ Ibanez TS808 and as far as I know is true bypass.

    • @BeefNEggs057
      @BeefNEggs057 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True. No hard to find chipsets or diodes to track down. All very common and cheap. You can build your own for $30 (including the pc board and metal box) I’d say assuming you have the soldering gear already. Maybe closer to $75-$100 if it’s your first pedal. Pretty fun experience to build a pedal. Amazon has a decent soldering iron (be sure it’s variable temp or you’ll melt that board) for less than $20. Watch some soldering videos and don’t beat yourself up if you f it up. It’s just pedals. No rockets here. The 808 clone would be an easy first project. I also recommend the queen of bone (king of Tone clone). Amazing sounding pedal. Google it.

    This is an interesting way to compare pedals. Using a loop to avoid the subtle differences in playing, style, pick attack etc that can occur playing live for each pedal. The only downside I see is that exact thing. Some pedals react differently, better or worse to different playing techniques( guitar volume, pick attack etc.)

    Sounds like "Life in the Fast Lane" by the Eagles at first but the transformation it took when it picks up is glorious! On a side note I went with the EQD Dunes with the lower switches to the right, the upper switch to the far left and all the knobs below 12 o'clock (varying) for a few different purposes like stacking on top of my Soul Food for a mid-boost and gain boost for metal and roll the volume pot on my guitar to max for solos. You can't go wrong with any of the pedals but it all depends on what you are looking for in a TS-llike pedal.

      'blues overdrives' (like the Boss BD-2 Blues Driver, or pedals based on the Marshall Bluesbreaker) tend to have a flatter EQ curve. The TS has quite a pronounced mid-hump (which I think is really due to cutting out bass and high end, rather than boosting mids so much) so it noticeably changes the guitar's original sound. 'Blues overdrives' will sound more 'transparent' - they don't change the original tone so much, they just add grit and drive.

    Another great comparison video 👌 I must say the TS808 does tug at the old heart strings ,but I wouldn't be adverse to the East River Drive . I'm lucky enough to own a very early TS9 with the same chip as your 808 reissue & it still sounds wicked after all these years . Interestingly I was told the TS9 was released in '82 , but the serial no.on mine , 166178, makes it '81 ??

    And the I can get 3 ERD for the same price as a 808 :)

    Funny... This came out right when I got my first TS. Just got it in the mail yesterday. It's a keeley moded TS.
    Of the four, as they are, I'd go with the dunes, however, in my opinion, the best TS-style pedal out there is the fulldrive 2.
    God job, mate.
    Cheers

    • @ThePedalBored
      @ThePedalBored  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the Full-Drive is based on the Boss SD-1, which is an essentially identical circuit to the Tube Screamer but with asymmetrical clipping (which sounds harsher / better, depending on your preference) instead of symmetrical. Of course the Tube Screamer is actually based on the Boss OD-1, but Ibanez couldn't use asymmetrical clipping because Boss had patented the circuit, so they used symmetrical and added a Tone control, and a much more popular pedal was born.

    That dunes is lovely, but almost unfair for a tubescreamer shootout. The east river drive is identical to the ts808 as far as I can hear, probably the best deal for someone who just wants a stand-alone tubescreamer tone.

      @@ThePedalBored Which volume? The pre-amp volume or master? And do you generally use the pre-amp as your "master" volume or instead max the pre-amp and use the actual master volume knob to control overall volume? I've heard of people doing both ways, but the way I originally heard it recommended through the grapevine when the Katana series first launched was to max the master volume and use the pre-amp volume knob to control overall level. That's the approach I use with my Katana 100, but I'm curious what others are doing.

    I never understood the people who say you're not supposed to use it alone or use the gain knob. If you only need the volume get a boost pedal... There are boost pedals with tone controls. Also Eq pedals allow you to sculpt the tone with massive volume boost.

    Love me some Tube Screamer content. Through headphones definitely can pick out a lot of the detail in each pedal example. Shame about the Mooer "Hot" setting - doesn't live up to the description. As you said, flabby in the lows. Really disappointing, but I guess being £40-ish you pay for what you get. Still, the standard "warm" mode hit all of the TS gooey goodness.
