      Exactly. The looper is the key.

    • @MichaelHokefromCO

      Yep - dials don't have to be in exactly the same position - instead, compare where they have to be to get similar sounds (to show if it's possible to get similar sounds). And compare range of possible sounds by setting dials at extremes, one at a time. Play the same track through both pedals, switch back and forth... Good stuff.

    • @PolaOpposite
      @PolaOpposite 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dear Every Confused Commenters: putting a cluttered multi-track snippet on a loop, removing any chance of dynamic interaction between the musician-instrument-effects, and ignoring the fact that the Klon is not a true bypass - yet putting it last in the chain - is not an optimal way of comparing the sonic attributes of these devices. It's lazy. If you want to know how well these devices perform, you have to go the full 9 yards and play a guitar with the device in the signal chain as they're intended to be used. Anything short of that is insufficient.

  • @dunebillydave222
    @dunebillydave222 5 ปีที่แล้ว +218

    It's nice to see a shoot-out done correctly, i.e.: using a looped group of phrases.
    I'm always surprised when comparisons are done with live play. It's inevitable that a guitarist will play differently when their ear is fresh, than after they've played a phrase half a dozen times. Of course, they may unconsciously play differently due to their expectations for a given pedal.
    Using a looped set of phrases eliminates all that and levels the playing field. So, a tip o' the hat for your foresight and dedication to fair play.

    • @ThePedalBored
      @ThePedalBored  5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Thanks! I like to be pedantically fair to all the pedals! Even the naughty Chinese knockoffs.

    • @Heatfarmer
      @Heatfarmer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't put two guitars into the same amp since the early 80's, so this is as inaccurate as a comparison could be. The two guitars make up for a completely saturation. Not that I mind, but its not accurate or done correctly by any means

    • @ThePedalBored
      @ThePedalBored  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Lars Thomsen I’m not actually putting two guitars into the same amp, I’m recording the same guitar into a looper twice. Saturation implies a signal that overloads a circuit but a looper doesn’t have a higher and higher load each time you add a new overdub into it. It’s much more like the difference between playing a single note and a chord. I totally appreciate that it doesn’t seem right to some people to demo a pedal with overdubs, and there’s a ton of channels out there that don’t, but for me it’s a trade off between demoing the sound accurately, and having something to listen to that is more interesting and complex - less boring more enjoyable 😀
      I’d also note that all my demos are about *comparing* similar pedals, not demoing them individually in isolation, so as long as the input to each pedal is essentially the same, the comparison is valid.

    • @dunebillydave222
      @dunebillydave222 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Heatfarmer I'm not talking about putting two different guitars into one amp at all. I'm talking about playing into two different effects pedals side-by-side. If you play live into one pedal, and then play a second time into the other pedal as a comparison, it's likely that you're playing will vary from time-to-time. It's inevitable that a person will play differently each time, according to what they expect to happen, and therefore taint the comparison. My point is to do what the guy at Decibelics did, and use a single phrase into a looper pedal, and then run an ABY pedal to send the signal into each of the two pedals being compared. That way, the same exact playing speed, volume, pick dynamics, etc, goes into both pedals being compared.

    • @dunebillydave222
      @dunebillydave222 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I apologize if I'm wrong oh, but I don't think you understood what I was saying. I'm complimenting you on using a a looper pedal. I'm not talking about running to separate guitars into one amplifier. What I'm saying is, badly done comparisons are the norm, where a person will have two pedals, and play live into one pedal, and then play live a second time into the other pedal. Each time they play it is inevitable that they're playing will be different and they will play according to what they expect the pedal to do. Of course this variation in there playing will taint the outcome of the comparison. So the only proper way to do a pedal comparison is to play a single phrase, or set of phrases, into a single looper pedal, and then play that loop into each effect pedal that's being compared. It is absolutely the only way to do a fair and accurate comparison.

Enough drive and dynamics and yet I can still hear my guitar through the drive like a natural time amp break up.

    The looper takes the bias out of the demo, I've seen presenters play more enthusiastically when they step on the more expensive pedal.

    Hey man, I just finished watching all of your videos. Besides being the best, in my opinion, in shootout setups, the music you create is great. This one's my favorite. Being a Frusciante fan, this feels like a song from his solo albums. Got to comment this. You are great. Thank you.

    I also love how he fit like the biggest pedal in the tiniest box.

    For me the Tumnus is the clear winner!
    The Tumnus Deluxe from Wampler sounds identical to the old original klone, but has a lot more options than the original! Brian made a better, further developed version out of the old klon original. The Tumnus Deluxe is the new STANDARD among the klones.

    • @Sean-xu5ti
      @Sean-xu5ti 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you expect anything else from Brian. I bet that pedal is amazing. Ha, but for the money just my 2 cents listening, it would depend on your current collection.... Especially if you have like 3-6 other wampler pedals, the soul food is a great deal for 59 dollars, if you have the money 100% the Tummus, we agree.

    I like how the comparison was done here. Pedals can get one far in achieving a tone. But there is a final ingredient of playing pedals through an actual amp and cabinet that really breathes life into a tone (really pushing the amp too brings out the sonic richness that isn't there at practice amp or headphone level).

    Excellent review of these fine pedals. They all sound good to me. I personally use the Tumnus Original 3 knob pedal. I call it my salt, and pepper pedal which rarely if ever gets turned off. I just do occasional adjustments in between songs mostly. I like to try the Deluxe Version at using only slightly more real estate on my board.
