    Well! The BEST professors of History I ever had was one who could captivate our interest to the point where all you could do is listen. This video, frankly, made me a little envious! (In a good way!) I am putting together one that unravels the chain of events that led to Hastings. I have done two decades of work, translating OE and Norse documents, in order to tell all three sides of the Norman conquest. My video is equal in length, but with no editors, no production team, and expensive to travel as well. This is - as good- as Kenneth Clark's 1969 BBC special called 'Civilisation' in how each sentence makes you hunger for the next. Frankly, I didn't even want this one to come to an ending either. What advice would you give to someone - like me - who has written a book - The King, The Thunderbolt, and The Conqueror - and wants to put the video as a companion? (Ps: I have two BFA degrees, one in Medieval History and the second in Archaeology, but never did go for a Masters degree. If anything, that has proven to be a roadblock among English universities.

      Hi Robert, many thanks for your kind words. I just had a look at your trailer, great work. I can only imagine that to tell the events of the conquest from the three sides would be a huge undertaking, I guess you could split them into three videos and tackle them one at a time - it’s very much up to you though. For me - as I am sure you know, the real work is in the research and then the script, that’s what takes the most time, once I am happy with the script the rest just falls into place. I’m very much like you though, a one man band and it has been a huge learning curve. Any advice you want re production etc by all means let me know. Cheers Mark.

    Very good video. I love this period.
    Eleanor of Provence was 12 or 13 when she was wed to Henry III, and had never seen him or England before. He was 28. She was beautiful, if quite young!

    • @historyslifestories373
      @historyslifestories373  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, you are quite right, they married the young ladies off at very young ages in those days. For a king Henry was fairly old when he wed, normally they were urged to keep the line going as quickly as possible. I find the Plantagenets fascinating 🙏👍😉

    never ceases to amaze me in regards to the amount of resources (money, manpower etc) expended by norman descended kings of england in trying to capture/ recapture their ancestral (and where they consider to be their ancestral) lands.
    the enmity between the english and french date back directly to 1066 and the various wars and finally trade/ empire rivalries of today

    10:15 For £80,000 Henry could have built two decent castles or one mega-castle. What an enormous amount of money to waste.

    Isn’t king John considered our worst king? I thought that was the reason the name John hadn’t been used in the royal family since.

      Many think that, they compare him to his father Henry II and his brother Richard I. He lost most of the lands possessed by Henry (Aquitaine, Anjou etc) and wasted much money in trying unsuccessfully to get them back. I have a video on John that explains all. 😉👍
