Wow more of my families Ancestry.
I am the ×generations great grandson to King Edward 1st Longshanks Plantagenet and Queen Eleanor Castile. They started my family line, their Daughter Princess Joan of Acre is my ×Generations grandmother. So hearing my families history still intrigues me. Except the history of King Henry the 8th, family still hates him most of all. He was afraid of being overthrown.

Henry Bollingbroke reminds me of Henry Tudor, as they both did their best work BEFORE ascending to the throne in removing their respective Richards.
However, they then went on to have short, cold, unstable, paranoid reigns that were dogged with doubts about the survival of the previous monarch, pretenders galore, financial issues and legitimacy concerns, as well as having sons who were more youthful, energetic and popular itching to take over.
Undeniably, both were mostly excellent when you take their lives as a whole, with John of Gaunt and Margaret Beaufort, respectively, raising them very well.

  • @beth7935
    @beth7935 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Excellent! Initially I mostly knew about Henry IV from his part in other people's stories, like Owain Glyndwr's, & I've been trying to learn more about Henry specifically, & this pulled everything together really well. I have to agree that he's underrated, & judged too harshly- what the heck did he do, except usurp a murderous tyrant who'd had 20+ years to change his ways & didn't? It was also great to watch this right after the one on John of Gaunt- I feel very educated on the origins of the Lancastrians. Henry V next!

I always thought it was funny that Edward 3 claimed the throne of France through the female line (his mother) and Henry 7 claimed the throne of England through the female line, but Richard 2 only became king because the people who made such decisions disregarded the female line...
The female line only counts when you want to overthrow someone.

Bad reputation? I do not understand why Henry IV would have one. What I understood from this documentary, he truly tried to rule so that it would be good for the realm - unlike his predecessor. When change was needed, he yielded for change, unless it meant that the poor would have to suffer. I really got the impression that he was treated unfairly by many parliament members, and even that conspiracy against him during the early years of his reign was unwarranted.

I think Henry IV was a great king .
For centuries , he has taken alot of heat for being a traitor or usurper .
And there might be some truth to these condemnations .
But if you look at the reality of his situation , he had absolutely no choice . It was survival . It was self defense , if you ask me .
And I won't throw shade on him . Richard II was unhinged - a complete sociopath . No one was safe - peasants or nobles or clergy . Richard was a maniac !
Henry , really did not have a choice .
    * There was one thing this documentary left out . A really important element .
This documentary completely left out that Richard put together a Seperate army made up of mercenaries called The White Heart . They wore blue liveries , with an embroidered White Stag on it . The White Heart soldiers reminded me of The S S. Einzsatsgruppon Death Squads or S.S. Deathshead units of Medieval Times .

It occurs to me that of all the countries' rulers the British have been about the most meticulous in recording their particulars. It seems so counterproductive for these proud men who wanted history to remember them to all adopt the same names. It's hard enough remembering what was done but it was all done by fellows with the name Richard or Henry later George got into the act. It does get a bit confusing but I'm not British. Thank you for a very enjoyable video.

On the one side Stephen, John and Richard and Edward, the second of those names, lower the bar such as to trouble a skinny limbo dancer, so the few like Edward III and Henry V who shine are most notable. A palm tree is not so novel in the Tropics, yet big news in Siberia.

Was the succession for Richard II formally announced before the black prince died or set out in Law? Surely there must have been a case for John of Gaunt to succeed Edward when the black prince died? He was the eldest son at that point, would have saved a lot of bother, Henry Bollinger's claim more legitimate than I had thought.

I think Henry IV did his best and Richard II didn't really give him many options. However he opened Pandoras box where closest claims to the throne didn't matter if you had a larger army. However it wasn't his fault that his grandson Henry VI was so utterly inept/unwell which led to the Wars of the Roses.

I think he was a good king and did what was expected of a medieval monarch: raising taxes, trying to placate the nobles and going to war which contrasted with the shortcomings of his predecessor. It was unfortunate that his reign was marred by dissafected, rebellious, and self-interested magnates who at first supported his campaign to take the throne, then turned against him. He was obviously beset with tax raising problems and other issues but tried to use parliament in a constructive way. It's unfortunate that he's gone down as a bad king because of his usurpation which set a precedent - anyone with a claim to the throne, however slight, could do the same. A great account and documentary about a fascinating period of English history!

Wasn't he the first English king to speak English at his coronation? Very interesting & transitional time for England. Their continental holdings had been lost. Which prompted his son to continue the 100 years war. The economy and population had been devastated by the black death years before. And Richards 2 suspicious nature about the nobles created a turbulent kingdom. What's amazing about Henry lV is that he was able to hold on to the kingdom and die king! His death & the black prince are odd. Do historians know what caused their deaths in such a wasting manor? Well done as always! Cheers!

This one does a better job of covering Richard II and his actions then the Richard II video. That video does back flips trying to do apologetics for him, while omitting important details like the ones in this video. Strange choice.

Consistently Pray for forgiveness, guidance in a good (positive) direction, and for help against evil. Pray to be saved from hell (whatever that may be). Pray for your friends and your family too, it only takes a minute or so/less at a time to pray. Do it and your life will slowly get better, or maybe quickly. It probably just depends on you and the kind of person you are/have been. Don't wait until its too late and you have to suffer the consequences of built up bad karma from immoral acts/unrepented sins. Maybe together we can help make the world a better place by changing ourselves for the better, and changing things around us for the better.
And addressing/thanking the CREATOR, LORD GOD at the beginning and end of your prayers would be a good idea 😊
Or just be my friend if you don't want to say the prayer 😄
I'm trying to help you get right with the LORD🙏
    Amen.
You should prostrate yourself if you don't want to do spoken prayer, or do both☺🙏🙏🙏

I’m currently reading Richard II by Nigel Saul. This bio is part of The Yale series of British Monarchs. They are all excellent and The People Profiles video are a wonderful companion to these books.

Dan Jones did a Richard II episode to close out his "Britain's Bloodiest dynasty" series.

Henry messed up when he executed the archbishop. He was not a ordinary citizen. He could have locked him up in the tower and fined him. He was certainly better than Richard II.

I watched the first 30 min expecting bio info on Henry IV but instead found a detailed picture of the political background for Henry's reign. So I gave up at that point. It would've been nice for the title of the clip to have indicated more clearly the actual content.

I guess they just didn’t have that much to go on, not much was documented of his personal life and relationships, because he was, in his youth, just the son of a Duke.
