- Footage has emerged of several Ukrainians walking past a large unexploded bomb sticking out of the ground in the ruins of the Ukrainian city of Avdiivka.
The missile appears to be a Russian FAB-500.

Fab-500 unguided. Don't listen to people saying it's a drop tank, they clearly didn't look hard enough to notice it has stabilisation fins.

alot of drop tanks have fins do t ask me why but I'm pretty sure I've seen quite a few with fins.. 🤔
Without fins a " drop tank" wouldn't drop. Wind shear during a climb would catch a couple g' s along the rest of the airframe and drag will nose up and tear off the wing.
@turnerheikka4008 yeah but the difference is drop tanks only have 2 small fins designed for lift and will tumble when free falling, this has 4 stabilizing fins just like any other bomb to ensure the nose points down
Although i also think its a bomb, some droptanks have fins. They might be there also to make the drop tank more aerodynamically neutral when its aerodynamics are added to the aircraft. Also jettisoning characteristics mentioned above might be the reason.

Looks like a FAB-500. It even has stabilizing fins at the end. External fuel tanks don't need the extra parasitic drag, as they don't care where it lands once pilots discard them. - beginer war thunder gamer here

It looks like the fab 500. The weld lines and fins look similar, but the markings are not familiar to me. Could be Ukrainian markings, since it is a soviet Era weapon, meaning both sides should have some.
The bomb mightve impacted something on the way down, slowing it. Coupled with the soft ground, the force might not have been enough to set off the fuse. That being said, whoever tries to move a semi set fused bomb is an idiot.
100% a FAB-500
It is a M-62 FAB-500 bomb. There is other pictures of these same exact bombs laying on the ground undetonated / unexploded in Ukraine and some of those pictures this bomb has latin laters labeling it as M-62 FAB-500 and the bomb looks the *_EXACT SAME_* as this one in this video. The same exact size, the same exact shape, the same exact fins, the same exact weld marks in the same exact spots.
This is very clearly a FAB-500 M-62 bomb. No doubt about it.

Russian can't drop a bomb accurately, that's a fact. Fuel tanks don't have stabilisers
I can see that although it may be an improvised explosive that uses a fuel tank as a shell like how the Americans used a 105mm tank cannon barrel as a base to build a bunker busting bomb

@Leland Grubson I'm gonna add a correction on the 165ft crater because I'm having trouble finding it again, it keeps coming up to a bomb they tested back in 2017. So I'm going to keep researching it then update it with a link when I find it.
It is a M-62 FAB-500 bomb. This one appears to have struck at a shallow angle and skipped, probably damaging the fuse. Undoubtedly, the comms mast in the background is what they were shooting at.

This thing isn't a dropped external fuel tank, it has fins, external fuel tanks are more oval and smoother in shape. And it has a name. It's an FAB-500, unguided drop-bomb. Drop tanks are oval and have equal sides, this has a steep decrease in size by the tail, which is very common in unguided bombs. Plus drop tanks are always colored pale blue or sky blue on Soviet aircraft, since it's the color palette of the bottom of Soviet planes.

Не обязательно, как подсказал умный человек, они довольно часто от земли рикошетят... Как и обычные снаряды, при должном умении, выставляя большее замедление на снаряде и стреляя настильно можно добиться что время замедления при рикошета от земли позволит снаряду взорваться плюс минус около 5 м над землей
К тому же по нему видно, что он вошёл в землю под 45градусов и выскочил... Часто такое видел... Особенно весело крутятся как юла снаряды потерявшие свою инерцию, при встрече с деревом, при этом как гироскоп кувыркаются на месте, и чешут асфальт.... Только ждёшь как он взорвётся в любую секунду)
Apparently Russia are now modifying these FAB500s into glide bombs as it's easier for them to add wings and a nav kit to this than to make new ones from scratch and I bet they've got huge stockpiles of these dating back to 1960s. Probably why this one didn't go off because it's probably been sat in storage for 50 years in wrong conditions. I bet half of them are probably duds but powerful when they do work. The upgrade system they're adding is a completely separate unit with fold out wings and a navigation unit that this is strapped to so they don't change anything on this itself.

Погрешность механических взрывателей и трубок сама по себе очень большая очень много отказников( невозможно учесть всех углов и условий и т.д.. Условий хранения и прочее.... И самое главное это испытание временем, вся эта советская залупа через 1 срабатывает... Пример с 1 пакета бм21 через каждый 3 отказные,

Heartbreaking, they are getting so used to the war and dangers that they don't mind being near this massive bomb. The size of that thing is insane. But then again, I imagine that if it suddenly goes off (which I wouldn't expect) you'd never know the difference anyway. But there can be no doubt that we must do everything to help Ukraine to win this war as soon as possible, liberate their people and land, and end all the horror. Slava Ukraini! - Stay safe!
