- Farewell, Old Lady! After over 27 years of service and transporting more than 7 million guests, the Airbus A321 with the registration HB-IOC is now heading into a well-deserved retirement.

The aircraft joined into its fleet in March 7 1995 and retired for passenger service in October 24 2022 according to Planespotters data

I actually flew on HB -IOC before Frankfurt-Paris
Should have kept some log to know which planes I flew on, between 1995 and 2002 i flew practically every other week with Swissair.
May have had IOC somewhere in the log.

In the way they were talking, they made it sound like it'd be reused for something, so I was surprised when they scrapped it...
Well yes, the materials and parts gathered from the aircraft are being reused.
When they starting to remove the E&Es, I know it's unlikely they'll do something else like convert to a cargo plane or something.
All usable components are reused. The fuselage itself has little use, so it mostly gets recycled

The first flight of this aircraft was in 1995 and it flew for swissair it was almost 28 years old

I believe yes, the aircraft registration can and likely will be used again in the future.

das Flugzeug hat das Ende seiner Lebensdauer erreicht, die Flugstunden und Flugzyklen sind begrenzt. Die strukturellen Komponenten des Flugzeugs - Rumpf, Tragflächen - sind nicht mehr sicher, um Belastungen und Vibrationen zu absorbieren. Bevor etwas Schlimmes passiert, muss das Flugzeug ausgemustert werden. Ich denke, niemand von uns möchte in einem unsicheren Flugzeug sitzen.

Why? Because the aircraft has reached the end of its service life, flight hours and flight cycles are limited. The aircraft's structural components - fuselage, wings - are no longer safe to absorb loads and vibrations. Before something bad happens, the aircraft must be retired. I think none of us wants to be on an unsafe aircraft.

They could have sold it to another airline, charter company or airline from another continent
Dear Swiss,,, If you owned the airplane, why dont you just give it to some museum, or why dont you make HB-IOC an air restaurant? Look at the Czech Republic. Tu-104s, Il-62s in museums or as restaurants... Also, have a look at ex Air India A320s. Those are being transferred to become airplane restaurants. If HB-IOC is such a special airframe, why dont you preserve it somewhere? 😞
