I really love the moment when ego tell peter that he killed his mother. It took peter two seconds to process what ego just told him and then he just blasted him wihtout even thinking twice.

Loki could’ve had him, Thor, Heimdall, and Hulk teleport away from the ship knowing that there’s nothing they could’ve done for the other Asgardians and therefore, they could’ve went to Earth and warn the Avengers and then it’d be more of an even fight than Thanos having 4 stones on Titan and 5 on Earth, he’d only have maybe 2 or 3 but then the Guardians would still be unaware of the threat and Thanos would be unaware of where Gamora is at since he can’t just teleport everywhere and all of that
Also if the Guardians were unaware, then Thanos would have gotten the Reality stone without trouble and Nebula wouldn't have been tortured and even if she was, who does Thanos love beside Gamora who he doesnt know the whereabouts of, BOOM GALAXY SAVED, he couldn't get the Soul Stone
@@fujinwind that's certainly correct. Thor would've let him. And whilst Loki was aware of the power thanos had, Thor had activated godmode literally 20 minutes ago. And they had the Hulk on there side. You know, the physically strongest being in the entire universe, given he's angry enough. All in all, they probably had a fighting chance. Except for the black league or whatever they are called. That kinda skewed things from a 2 on one to a 5 on 2.
Considering his known skillset, I think it was because he realised he didn't want to leave his brother to die. Not only did he just get his big redemption, he knew Thanos would be a death sentence for Thor. I don't think he could get multiple people to Earth, and even if he could, Thor wouldn't of left a single person voluntarily.

It's great to see Ego get his comeuppance for doing that, where his greatest success ultimately doomed him in the end after admitting the truth to his son, who's a slightly unhinged gun for hire with only a thread of emotional attachment that his whole plan hangs on.

@@ejc8466 Oddly, Odin I see as a tragedy. He definitely raised Hela poorly. Made her a bloodthirsty monster before he had a change of heart. Then he locked her away to try and protect Asgard and the Nine Realms. With Thor and Loki he failed as well, even though he was trying to do it right this time. The hubris he saw in Thor in the first Thor movie was a reflection of his own, and Loki's behavior was a a demonstration of his inability to fully acknowledge him. It isn't until his last moments that he acknowledges his failures to his sons, and it isn't until they face off against Hela on Asgard that they realize WHY Odin raised them as he did. To prepare them for her to the best of HIS ability. That's just my interpretation of how his arc is presented in the MCU movies. YMMV.
Comics as a whole, DC does it, batman parents gunned down, flash's mom was killed and had his father in jail, superman's parents fucking exploded, etc etc
I can watch any horror movie alone in the dark with all the doors unlocked and go straight to bed after. I had to pause Marvel Ultimate Alliance a few times because Galactus gives me the heebie-jeebies.
My first comment was a joke one but I feel the need to leave something genuine. My dad died a month before this movie came out. He loved Guardians, and specifically the character of Yondu. My dad thought he was just badass. My dad was a pyrotechnic, he was the lead engineer on hundreds of fireworks shows. For his funeral we did exactly what he requested, we spliced his ashes into a 6" mortar and shot it into the sky. Sooooo you can imagine the impact the ending of this movie had on me when I eventually watched GotG2. Buckets of tears. Motherfucking buckets.
The classic anime camera angle of "I just lost my cool" followed by the held back "what" that pulls him out of his brainwashing gives me chills every time.
I dont recall EVER seeing that camera shot in an anime mate. A close up shot of a face when someone looses their cool sure- but NOT a dolly zoom. That is pretty HARD to do well in animation. I've only seen a couple - ever- in thousands of anime- and they were not on face close ups. You are FAR FAR more likely to have seen it in other live action films or shows not in anime. And even if you did once see it in anime it is not some super common anime trope shot! If it exists in anime at all it is SUPER rare. If you just mean a face close up of loosing their cool- even with a regular zoom in- then im sure that is fairly common- about as much as in film- BUT I just dont consider it to be the same shot at ALL without the doly zoom (zooming in with the camera lense as the camera itself moves backwards on a track).
My favorite part of this scene was Peter's complete lack of hesitation, he puts the pieces together and immediately acts. I really respect a hero who takes the initiative and doesn't give evil the chance to regroup.
@@Ruiluth The guns did jack shit. The right move would be to play it cool and learn his weaknesses. Probably ego would have at least stalled things if played correctly, because winning Peter was important to him.
My mom passed away suddenly a couple years before Vol.2 came out. In fact, GotG 1 was the last movie we saw in a theater together. I spent a lot of time angry. Angry at myself for not being there. Angry at the doctors for not doing enough or not diagnosing her sooner. Angry at the world for the unfairness of it. Seeing Quill rage against the physical embodiment of his mother's disease really helped me find closure. Even though my mom wasn't taken by cancer, it didn't matter. For that brief moment, I was Peter and Ego was my mother's killer.
Have you ever seen ‘The Princess Bride’? Mandy Patinkin’s father died of cancer, and he says in interviews that in the famous scene (“My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!”) where he kills the man who killed his father, he was killing cancer.
I watched all the MCU films. Guardians 2 was the only one that made me cry. I can't help it. for most my life I never knew my father. But I was raised by someone else. Someone who was integral to my childhood and eventual adulthood. And when Yondu said "He may have been your father, but he was never your daddy", I lost it. At that time I was feeling a bit down from never knowing my father. And that single sentence, put it all into perspective. I already had a father, it was that person that watched me grow up, that was ALWAYS there for me. That never gave up on me even when my mother did. Sometimes it was tough love, but most times it was the mushy kind. He was my Yondu. And though he, my granduncle, is no longer be with us. He will always be my guardian.
It’s especially haunting when you think about the fact that…. its not just a room full of the bones of his dead children, he had a *corpse room to toss the bodies into.*
Thanos just tortured him by forcing him to make the decision to kill Gamora. Quill pulled the trigger.... just for Thanos' amusement. And after that she just gets sacrificed. Quill had every right to go nuts!
One little thing I love about when "The Chain" starts playing at the end of the movie is that its the first time that pop music plays nondiegetically in either of the films. It's always been from Peter's Walkman, or the ship's stereo. However, when Ego shatters Peter's Walkman, the object that symbolizes his unwillingness to move on from the past and grow up, and the fear Peter feels about growing up, we still hear music, telling us that Peter has finally learned to move on. Even if he can't have the physical objects that represent the past, even if he can't return back to how it used to be, he can still move on into the future without fear, because the music is inside him. He can learn to grow, and move on while still keeping his memories in his heart. The two aren't mutually exclusive. He can still treasure the past while embracing the future. Hearing the music coming from no in-universe source proves this. Throughout the entire series thus far, Peter has been reluctant to change. He refuses to grow, because he thinks that means he has to stop holding his memories close to his heart. The ending showcases how he's grown, while also being incredibly heartfelt and hilarious. What a masterpiece of a movie.
My personal theory for why Ego was only able to pass on his power to Peter, and not to any of his other children, is because he truly loved Peter's mother.
Despite taking place in space and dealing with stones of unlimited power that can destroy the universe, Guardians of the Galaxy is the most human superhero movie....ever.
This means so much to me. Growing up in an abusive, low income family really isolates you from everyone else. When all your relatives are either passed away or too good for you it hurts to see everyone else at family reunions with people to support and love them unconditionally. I just need a non-traditional family like Peter Quill.
I still remember seeing this scene in the theater and remember thinking at the reveal "Kill him" being my instant thought only for Peter to right away to open fire. I don't think I have ever felt more on the same page as a character before or since watching that scene for the first time. Peter's probably hands down the most human character in the MCU.
As someone who survived leukemia myself, I understand how living through cancer, or any life threatening experience can change how you think about everything. The bad changes, the good changes, and the existential understanding.
It's kind of weird that my two favorite moments from the MCU are "You killed my mother" and "He killed my mom"... from two different characters, in completly different contexts....
Definitely agree. Many people saw it as a retread of Guardians when it really wasn’t. It was so much more than that. I also feel that AoU gets so much flack when it does a fair job of breaking down the characters and really analyzing them, giving them a villain that really tests them and who they are.
3 things hold Vol. 2 back for me. 1. A lot of the jokes fall flat for me. The film just felt bloated with jokes for me. But also, it might just be my rose-tinted expectations from the first film impacting this one. 2. I don't really like Drax in this film. I felt he was at his best with his dry/clueless humor, but he kind of loses that after the first movie except for some jokes. 3. I really really disliked the comparison between Rocket and Yondu on their trip. The "we're the same" stuff just ruins any moment for me. I probably wouldn't have even taken it so hard if the discord between Quill and Rocket didn't seem so forced. For me, that makes it kind of average.
It’s good but it doesn’t have hardly any character development and it’s very weird pacing. Guardians vol 1 was hands down a masterpiece it balance characters, story and comedy. Guardians Vol 2 is really Yondu’s story, bright dynamic color, and jokes every 30 seconds. Ragnarok basically followed the same style. Advancing one character a little, bright colors, and jokes.
Honestly my favorite moment in this scene is when Kurt Russell as Ego briefly lets fall the mask of the returned caring father figure and just screams, “For the first time in my existence... I am finally NOT ALOOONE!!!” Like he’s not declaring this to Quill, but rather that he’s a madman announcing his victory against a universe that’s disappointed him to the point of driving him insane. And then immediately after, he falls calm again. It’s only in that one moment when he reveals his true self, and it served as a great reminder that Kurt Russell is actually a fantastic actor.
People only pay attention to the end result. That's just how Peter and frankly how the Guardians are. They get fired up, lash out, and sometimes it doesn't work out. But you can't love them when it works and hate them when it doesn't. Peter remained consistent.
THANK YOU finally someone who doesn't say "Quill ruined the plan," and acknowledges that EVERYONE screwed up somewhere along the line. Quill's reaction in Infinity War was completely warranted and 100% In-character! I would have had an issue if he DIDN'T lose his shit.
I think anyone who put too much on Quill wasn't thinking too hard about the movie. The only reason they got to that point was Quill and his plan. And anyone expecting a person to be completely rational in that moment is asking for way too much. He's at best hours past a moment when he had to be prepared to shoot and kill the person he loves at her request. He made that choice, it was taken away from him, and he finds out she was killed by the one person she didn't want to be taken away by. Yeah, he's going to lose it. That's how the Guardians succeed. They are crazy, reckless, and run off their emotions. It didn't work out there, but that doesn't mean it was all on him. A lot of characters played into Thanos winning in Infinity War. And the only guy that should be blamed is the guy who actually killed trillions of people.
I would also like to point out that Quill was one of just 4 people who were ready to sacrifice to win against Thanos. Even if Thanos made it pointless, he did pull the trigger on Gamora, he was ready to actually kill her at her behest, even if it was hard for him. The only 3 people who can claim to be willing to go to similar lengths in Infinity War are Scarlet Witch, Vision (ENDGAME SPOILERS) And Doctor Strange, who had to know full well what would happen to Tony when he put them on the path towards victory. Makes his "I am sorry Tony, it was the only way," line take on a whole new meaning in hindsight. As to why I dont count Gamora herself, it is because that ultimately she was not willing to sacrifice Nebula to keep the soul stone safe, even if she was herself willing to die for it.
Quill always had emotional struggles. When his father admitted to killing his mother, how did he react? GOING CRAZY! It’s part of his character, so people can’t just blame one guy
Someone made a comment towards Peter's outrage that sheds a whole new light on the subject, though I cannot recall who it was. Earlier in Infinity War, Peter attempts to kill Gamora as per their promise to each other prior to confronting Thanos. Thanos of course prevents this and takes off with Gamora in his possession. Fast forward to the fight with Thanos and everything's hunky dory and going swell, but then Peter learns that Thanos, might have, most likely, killed his daughter that he loved and cherished. And in that split second, where Peter beats Thanos senseless, he's not beating Thanos. He's beating himself. Because in his mind, he's no better than Thanos save that Thanos succeeded and rid Peter of the one thing he could care about anymore.
I always saw it as Peter is a guy with parent issues, it's understandable but its a keypoint of his character. Then he comes from Ego, his own dad who killed thousands of his own children and killed Peter's own mother, the woman who Ego loved. Then to see Thanos do it for much the same reason. I feel like he was reminded too much of Ego, felt hatred that there could be another father out there who was just as cruel and evil to their own kids, and snapped.
After you've seen the film and understand what's coming the "I'm Mary Poppins" line just breaks your heart. I spent allot of energy suppressing tears and it started when Nebula says "... I just wanted a sister!" That was a warning to the audience that things were going to be turned on their head in this film. Love the character arcs in this film.
This movie hits me different than the rest of the MCU for similar reasons. My mom had just taken my brother and I out from under my very abusive dad like, 2 days before I went and saw GoG2 in the theatre.
I def hear you with that. I saw Guardians 1 in August while my dad[he was a love/hate figure in my life] was fighting his cancer. Made the first part hard to watch but when he passed in October I couldn't watch Peter's mothers scenes that next year. Still kind of can't and the actress looks like she's in decent health compared to the real thing[it's a movie. No issue with that.]. So imagine getting to Guardians 2 was 'interesting' to watch because of that. So I'm really glad your mother got you and your family away from your dad.❤
It’s like everyone forgot or just didn’t watch Vol. 2 that Peter is a just a ball of feeling and lashes out when the one he loves are hurt. Ego killed his mother and Peter immediately tried to kill Ego so it totally makes sense that Quill would attack Thanos when he realized Gamora is dead. It’s the same thing with his mother, Ego claims he loved Quill’s mom and said he had to put the tumor in her head so he can continue his plan just like how Thanos killed the daughter he loved so Thanos could get the Soul Stone.
Kye Dysarthria some people who blamed him for his apparently “idiotic move” in IW. Personally, it’s completely understandable and human to do what Quill did in IW. Besides, if he didn’t, Thanos would still win anyway, so he *needed* to do that.

No one is thinks it's stupid that he would want to kill thanos for what he did; they just think that most people could shelf the anger for ten seconds so that the person they want to kill is without their most powerful weapon, or just help take it off themselves. It may make sense for the character, but that still doesn't stop it from being a stupid move.

This is by far my favourite Marvel movie. I could think of a dozen scenes from it that I'd watch an episode on. I feel there's so much for people to relate to, and I think Nebula might be my favourite MCU character between this, IW, and Endgame, despite her being pretty 1 note in the first. Hope Gunn keeps upping the ante as far as character, themes, etc. go given how much of a step up Volume 2 was. Great essay!
I very much feel the same about Nebula. I am glad she got more focus in Vol 2. I remember leaving the theater thinking she was one of the best parts of it.
That’s what I mention sometimes. People tend to blame Starlord for everything when people like Loki and Dr. Strange basically gave the stone to Thanos. Then there’s other scenes, like the one this video showed. Yeah it was obviously made to lead up to endgame, but you get what I mean.
I know you commented 2 weeks ago but I’m still convinced that starlord doing what he did was the path that dr. Strange saw. Thanos “winning” and the hero’s reversing that. It’s easy to blame starlord. But if dr. Strange saw that starlord was going to ruin it he’d probably just portaled him somewhere else.
Excuse me while I die laughing: that crying meme caught me off guard. Ego didn't just murder her, he let her die slowly and painfully before his son's very own eyes. That shit is traumatic and I'd personally want something on the level of slow, painful and humiliating for Ego knowing how many lives he's taken.
I just love that, in that moment, my expectations were gloriously subverted. I was worrying that this film I had really been enjoying was going along the common trope of the hero being brainwashed by power and his friends having to snap him out of it through fighting him and appealing to their friendship. Instead, Peter immediately snaps out of it because of his love of his mother. Then he, without hesitation, impulsively kills his father. Now, we know that Ego isn't dead, but I honestly believe Peter thought he was killing him in that moment. It is also why I defend his actions in Infinity War as being entirely consistent with his character. A characteristic that, in this film, was his saving trait, ended up being his greatest self-defeating weakness; much like Thor's overconfidence, Tony's proactiveness and Steve's hardline morality. Gunn and the Russos are geniuses.

The "you killed my mother" scene has a special place in my heart in terms of relating to a character. My best friend, whom I wanted to marry, had seizures and the cause happened to be close enough to the top to operate on, and when she went into surgery she didn't come out alive. If I were to find out someone put them in her and took away her hope of freedom by killing her, what Starlord did would look like a kitten playing with a chewtoy. My grandmother calls that scene "too violent", I call it "not violent enough."
"You shouldn't have killed my mom and squished my Walkman." In any other movie, this line would be made purely for comedy or would come off as cheesy, but the reason why lines like this work in the Guardians movies is because of the constant connection we have to these characters. Very few films take the time to really make you feel for the characters at all times. These movies do such a great job at balancing top-notch character-driven humor and flawless heart-to-heart exchanges between these characters. That's why this line means so much. Taken out of context, we would have no reason to care about his Walkman, because to most people a Walkman doesn't even compare to the value of your mother. But to Peter, they're one in the same. His Walkman is the essence of his mom. And that's just so beautiful to me.
The way I see it, the one thing that saved the universe in GotG 2 was Peter's deep love for his mother. Otherwise he'd have done as Ego wanted. So it made perfect sense for his character to lose it when he found out Thanos killed Gamora, another special person in his life. It was horrible he did it, but it's what I'd have expected from him. In one movie his love saved the universe, in another movie that same love doomed it. If that's not poetic, I don't know what is. Also Guardians movies were my personal faves.
As a fan of these films, this was an excellent analysis. I also admire the fact that you were able to open up and put such a personal spin on this scene. Congratulations for being cancer-free for a decade.

I understand how hard dealing with cancer can be. Especially as a kid. I got Leukemia when I was 17 (not quite a kid, but still young). I had only gotten to experience about 6 weeks of my senior year of high school when I got sick. I had to do all of the school work I would have done in school all while dealing with the chemotherapy and throwing up every hour or so. Even though I was still going through treatment, I forced myself to get back home in time to be able to go to prom and my graduation ceremony. I was lucky enough to go to St. Jude to get treated, and they had some amazing resources to help with coping. I'm glad you're doing well, and I've been cancer free for a year and a half now. I'm still dealing with a lot of side effects and pain as a result of treatment, but I am doing much better than I was. The trials we go through are what makes us who we are. Dealing with cancer showed me the fragility of life, and made me appreciate every day so much more. Going to St. Jude showed me how blessed I was in getting it at the age that I did, because I was old enough to understand what they had to do and why, where as a baby or small child wouldn't. There were so many younger children and babies who looked happy, even though they were probably in pain, and definitely confused on why they had to do the things they did, and about what was going on around them. I got to make some new friends through staying in Memphis, on St. Jude campus, who knew exactly what I was going through and who I could share my experienced and pain with. Everyone has trials they deal with and they are all equally important, but cancer is one of the toughest things I've ever had to go through. I loved the video too, by the way.
Kids who die of cancer don't grow up to have cancers kids of their own. Humanity is insane for allowing weakness to corrupt the species. How selfish you are, to think your existence is worth future suffering.
I know I'm about 2 years late, but the first Guardians brought me to tears very early. In August 2013 I was living in Olympia, Washington and received the news that my mother, living in Connecticut, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I flew over to be there when she had surgery in September, then flew back to Washington. In February of 2014 she developed a life-threatening blood clot in her leg, which is something that pancreatic cancer can cause. Flew over again, flew back again. Both times I told Mom to just say the word and I would drop everything to move back to CT. She didn't, and I used that to justify living on the other side of the country while she went through hell. In May of 2014 my dad called me. She wasn't expected to get through the next 72 hours. I was on a plane the next morning. She surpassed the 72 hours, but only by 30 or so. Only time I've ever seen my dad vulnerable. After the funeral, I went back to the west coast and tried to get on with my life. When Guardians Vol 1 became available on streaming my roommates suggested watching it, and I agreed. Watching Quill run from his mothers room as she was dying brought up a lot of guilt and sadness I had been able to suppress. Cried so much it hurt, physically hurt. All from a movie with a talking racoon that's best friends with a tree.
I wasn't ever a huge Marvel fan until recently, and I still haven't seen all of the films in the universe. But The Guardians of the Galaxy films are by far my favourites, I decided to watch the first one because I like Scifi but I fell in love with the world characters and stories. They are the perfect combination of action, comedy drama and heart, in my opinion.
Great video! I loved both Lindsay Ellis and Full Fat's video on Guardians, and I'd definitely put yours up there with them. It takes a brave man to get personal when analysing a film, but it's a testament to how good Vol. 2 is that it almost becomes an essential part of it. I love the development Gunn gave all the Guardians. In vol 2 Drax has 2 moments that underline the "show don't tell" ideal. There is a moment on Ego when Drax is watching the sunset and tells Mantis that it reminds him of his wife and daughter. He is so stoic and calm, and she sets her hand on his shoulder and his absolute sorrow causes her to immediately begin bawling uncontrollably. Later when he is carrying unconscious Mantis and Ego begins swallowing him into the ground, he doesn't try to save himself, he holds her as high above his head as he can, selflessly sacrificing himself.
Drax is an amazing character, most people know him as a joke character who exist for comedy, but he is very caring even if he was very literal, also his “why is gamora” joke that a lot of people know is the actors own joke he made
He does sort of play the 'I'm so alone' part a bit, but luckily not so much since its not that clear he's the villain to start with. He even does a decent job of seeming like he's the big shot Dad who screwed up by never being there for his son and trying to make amends. The scene where Peter confronts him about never going back to Earth for him and Ego's response being 'I couldn't go back to an Earth where she wasn't alive' seems entirely genuine in its grief over her death.
@@josephperez2004 i half suspected he might be the villian but seriously though. Peter's reasoning is the same thing as ego for not returning back to earth. I believed him. Until i was like: man yondu handled the Ravagers,the goldies dont present much of a threat,and nebula is just one person. Who the fuck is gonna be the villian but ego?
Ego is a really well written villain in the context of the hero’s story. His personality and plan contrasts and compliments everything that the first movie and part of the second movie led up to so well.
Grew up poor, suffered physical and emotional abuse from both parents, and lost truly loved ones to cancer. I hear you. Guardians has made me cheer, laugh and cry. These two movies are my family's favourite of the entire MCU.
I volunteer at a local charity shop every Saturday and they always let me pick the music when I'm there; I bought the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 CD before watching the movie after it left the cinema. I got such a warm reaction from the manager (who had never watched any Marvel movies, but who actually recognised every single song!), that I play it every Saturday I go down there. When I finally watched the movie, I knew the entire soundtrack and it was so distracting but also made the entire thing that much more enjoyable. I highly recommend it next time a Guardians of the Galaxy movie comes out. Side note: watching customers react to Guardians Inferno is my favourite pass time
Great work. I always thought gotg2 was underrated when it came out, but now it seems alot of people has turned around on it which is awesome. Gunn is a genius
[Ids5621-Retro] I think it was mainly the humor that took some of people out of it. If the jokes don't land in this movie for you it can kill it for you hard. Me personally, even though some of the jokes were a bit forced at times I loved this movie and see it a mildly flawed masterpiece and is my second favorite MCU movie to this day.
The use of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain in this movie kicks so much ass. Honestly when Quill says "You shouldn't have killed my mom and crushed my walkman...", i hear the music move up in the mix, Lindsey and Stevie start belting out "If you don't love me now, you will never love me again" and Peter tackles Ego, i cry like a goddamn baby.
Though I agree on The Chain being the best, it is actually Father And Son that has a deeper connection to me. My father taught me and my sisters to sing from a very young age, something to keep us busy on countless long road trips as my eldest sister lived multiple hours away. It became a passion of our family, though only me and Dad keep up that tradition when the radio's not working or there's no good music on. In the last few years, we've added to our list, adding more modern songs like Angela by The Lumineers and I'll Follow You Into The Dark by Death Cab For Cutie, and a few older ones, one of those being Father And Son. Countless hours belting out the lyrics, trying to hit Cat Stevens' beautiful notes, and forgetting words created so many memories that I won't forget. And so, when we, with our shared love of movies and my unending Marvel knowledge, went to see this movie, we were not expecting the final song. We mouthed the lyrics, we held hands, and we mourned a fallen hero. Just, thank you Marvel.
Peter: _lashes out at Ego for killing his mom; universal praise_ Tony: _lashes out at Bucky for killing his mom and dad; anger and vitriol from a portion of the fandom_ The context is different, sure, but ultimately it’s the same visceral, thoughtless reaction. That’s not even accounting for the reaction to Peter reacting to Thanos killing Gamora.
On 12:20 the proper term you're looking for is the "dolly zoom" effect. First used by Alfred Hitchcock in the film 'Vertigo'. It's also called the 'reverse tracking shot'. It's done with a zoom lens by zooming and moving the camera at the same time.
Thank God I'm not the only one who forgave starlord wholeheartedly, everyone acts like I'm crazy, but I watched the movie the second time just to see that scene again, it was a truly MARVELous scene for his character
There is many scenes that hits me really hard in this movie and can't stop myself from crying like little girl especially with the "You Killed My Mother" scene.
Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 is my favorite Marvel movie. One of my favorite movies period. And it just amazes me to see how it connects with people in different ways. I can't tell you how devastated I was when I found out about the firing of James Gunn. I felt so much relief when he was rehired.
It's a real good one, and my second favorite. But The chain always gets me pumped and ready to do something as to where I think Brandy is just a real good listen. I can't listen to Cat Steven's Father and Son now without getting all misty eyed XD
When Ego drops the bombshell that he killed Peter's mother was one of the few times in the theater where I've let out a genuine gasp. It was such a shocking moment, and everything about Peter's reaction to it is amazing. This truly is one of the best scenes and moments in the MCU I'm glad you talked about it. Also glad that you mentioned the use of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain. Every time I watch this film and The Chain plays in the finale, I get chills. It's one of the most thrilling and emotionally satisfying action pieces in the whole MCU.
The cool thing is that they make you think you already predicted the big twist, being that ego is evil. The real twist being the mother thing which is so clever

I still remember the mass groan that echoed across the theater when Ego confessed to giving her the tumor. The devolution of emotions that occured was palpable.
This idea of “One Marvellous Scene” was so good and this video is another on the list of perfect encapsulations of what makes a “Marvellous scene”. I too love these movies (and this scene) and I certainly have not had the same trials as you or any of those characters, but these movies speak to me as a human being all the same - because these characters, the actions they take, the music they listen too (I’m heavily musical and these movies basically are my taste in music) are so undeniably ‘human’ that despite being a wacky colourful space opera, It still hits home and hits hard.

Loki could’ve had him, Thor, Heimdall, and Hulk teleport away from the ship knowing that there’s nothing they could’ve done for the other Asgardians and therefore, they could’ve went to Earth and warn the Avengers and then it’d be more of an even fight than Thanos having 4 stones on Titan and 5 on Earth, he’d only have maybe 2 or 3 but then the Guardians would still be unaware of the threat and Thanos would be unaware of where Gamora is at since he can’t just teleport everywhere and all of that

And they had the Hulk on there side. You know, the physically strongest being in the entire universe, given he's angry enough. All in all, they probably had a fighting chance. Except for the black league or whatever they are called. That kinda skewed things from a 2 on one to a 5 on 2.
Considering his known skillset, I think it was because he realised he didn't want to leave his brother to die. Not only did he just get his big redemption, he knew Thanos would be a death sentence for Thor. I don't think he could get multiple people to Earth, and even if he could, Thor wouldn't of left a single person voluntarily.
Let's also not forget that Ego was the literal personification of a cancer that spreads, which makes sense as he puts the tumor in Meredith.

He definitely raised Hela poorly. Made her a bloodthirsty monster before he had a change of heart. Then he locked her away to try and protect Asgard and the Nine Realms.
With Thor and Loki he failed as well, even though he was trying to do it right this time. The hubris he saw in Thor in the first Thor movie was a reflection of his own, and Loki's behavior was a a demonstration of his inability to fully acknowledge him. It isn't until his last moments that he acknowledges his failures to his sons, and it isn't until they face off against Hela on Asgard that they realize WHY Odin raised them as he did. To prepare them for her to the best of HIS ability.
That's just my interpretation of how his arc is presented in the MCU movies. YMMV.

My first comment was a joke one but I feel the need to leave something genuine.
My dad died a month before this movie came out. He loved Guardians, and specifically the character of Yondu. My dad thought he was just badass.
My dad was a pyrotechnic, he was the lead engineer on hundreds of fireworks shows. For his funeral we did exactly what he requested, we spliced his ashes into a 6" mortar and shot it into the sky. Sooooo you can imagine the impact the ending of this movie had on me when I eventually watched GotG2. Buckets of tears. Motherfucking buckets.

The classic anime camera angle of "I just lost my cool" followed by the held back "what" that pulls him out of his brainwashing gives me chills every time.
I dont recall EVER seeing that camera shot in an anime mate. A close up shot of a face when someone looses their cool sure- but NOT a dolly zoom. That is pretty HARD to do well in animation. I've only seen a couple - ever- in thousands of anime- and they were not on face close ups.
You are FAR FAR more likely to have seen it in other live action films or shows not in anime. And even if you did once see it in anime it is not some super common anime trope shot! If it exists in anime at all it is SUPER rare.
If you just mean a face close up of loosing their cool- even with a regular zoom in- then im sure that is fairly common- about as much as in film- BUT I just dont consider it to be the same shot at ALL without the doly zoom (zooming in with the camera lense as the camera itself moves backwards on a track).

My favorite part of this scene was Peter's complete lack of hesitation, he puts the pieces together and immediately acts. I really respect a hero who takes the initiative and doesn't give evil the chance to regroup.

My mom passed away suddenly a couple years before Vol.2 came out. In fact, GotG 1 was the last movie we saw in a theater together.
I spent a lot of time angry. Angry at myself for not being there. Angry at the doctors for not doing enough or not diagnosing her sooner. Angry at the world for the unfairness of it.
Seeing Quill rage against the physical embodiment of his mother's disease really helped me find closure. Even though my mom wasn't taken by cancer, it didn't matter. For that brief moment, I was Peter and Ego was my mother's killer.

I watched all the MCU films. Guardians 2 was the only one that made me cry. I can't help it. for most my life I never knew my father. But I was raised by someone else. Someone who was integral to my childhood and eventual adulthood. And when Yondu said "He may have been your father, but he was never your daddy", I lost it. At that time I was feeling a bit down from never knowing my father. And that single sentence, put it all into perspective. I already had a father, it was that person that watched me grow up, that was ALWAYS there for me. That never gave up on me even when my mother did. Sometimes it was tough love, but most times it was the mushy kind. He was my Yondu. And though he, my granduncle, is no longer be with us. He will always be my guardian.

One little thing I love about when "The Chain" starts playing at the end of the movie is that its the first time that pop music plays nondiegetically in either of the films. It's always been from Peter's Walkman, or the ship's stereo. However, when Ego shatters Peter's Walkman, the object that symbolizes his unwillingness to move on from the past and grow up, and the fear Peter feels about growing up, we still hear music, telling us that Peter has finally learned to move on. Even if he can't have the physical objects that represent the past, even if he can't return back to how it used to be, he can still move on into the future without fear, because the music is inside him. He can learn to grow, and move on while still keeping his memories in his heart. The two aren't mutually exclusive. He can still treasure the past while embracing the future. Hearing the music coming from no in-universe source proves this.
Throughout the entire series thus far, Peter has been reluctant to change. He refuses to grow, because he thinks that means he has to stop holding his memories close to his heart. The ending showcases how he's grown, while also being incredibly heartfelt and hilarious.
What a masterpiece of a movie.

My personal theory for why Ego was only able to pass on his power to Peter, and not to any of his other children, is because he truly loved Peter's mother.

Despite taking place in space and dealing with stones of unlimited power that can destroy the universe, Guardians of the Galaxy is the most human superhero movie....ever.
This means so much to me. Growing up in an abusive, low income family really isolates you from everyone else. When all your relatives are either passed away or too good for you it hurts to see everyone else at family reunions with people to support and love them unconditionally. I just need a non-traditional family like Peter Quill.

I still remember seeing this scene in the theater and remember thinking at the reveal "Kill him" being my instant thought only for Peter to right away to open fire. I don't think I have ever felt more on the same page as a character before or since watching that scene for the first time. Peter's probably hands down the most human character in the MCU.
As someone who survived leukemia myself, I understand how living through cancer, or any life threatening experience can change how you think about everything. The bad changes, the good changes, and the existential understanding.
It's kind of weird that my two favorite moments from the MCU are "You killed my mother" and "He killed my mom"... from two different characters, in completly different contexts....

Anyone who says GOTG Vol 2 is the average Marvel movie really needs to give in a second chance

I watched it for the second time last week and it really is a hell of a lot better than what a lot of people have said about it
Definitely agree. Many people saw it as a retread of Guardians when it really wasn’t. It was so much more than that. I also feel that AoU gets so much flack when it does a fair job of breaking down the characters and really analyzing them, giving them a villain that really tests them and who they are.
3 things hold Vol. 2 back for me. 1. A lot of the jokes fall flat for me. The film just felt bloated with jokes for me. But also, it might just be my rose-tinted expectations from the first film impacting this one. 2. I don't really like Drax in this film. I felt he was at his best with his dry/clueless humor, but he kind of loses that after the first movie except for some jokes. 3. I really really disliked the comparison between Rocket and Yondu on their trip. The "we're the same" stuff just ruins any moment for me. I probably wouldn't have even taken it so hard if the discord between Quill and Rocket didn't seem so forced. For me, that makes it kind of average.
It’s good but it doesn’t have hardly any character development and it’s very weird pacing. Guardians vol 1 was hands down a masterpiece it balance characters, story and comedy. Guardians Vol 2 is really Yondu’s story, bright dynamic color, and jokes every 30 seconds. Ragnarok basically followed the same style. Advancing one character a little, bright colors, and jokes.
That scene where drax talks about how he met his wife leads me to belive that his people are kinda normal and he just has a learning disability

Honestly my favorite moment in this scene is when Kurt Russell as Ego briefly lets fall the mask of the returned caring father figure and just screams, “For the first time in my existence... I am finally NOT ALOOONE!!!” Like he’s not declaring this to Quill, but rather that he’s a madman announcing his victory against a universe that’s disappointed him to the point of driving him insane. And then immediately after, he falls calm again. It’s only in that one moment when he reveals his true self, and it served as a great reminder that Kurt Russell is actually a fantastic actor.

People only pay attention to the end result. That's just how Peter and frankly how the Guardians are. They get fired up, lash out, and sometimes it doesn't work out. But you can't love them when it works and hate them when it doesn't. Peter remained consistent.

THANK YOU finally someone who doesn't say "Quill ruined the plan," and acknowledges that EVERYONE screwed up somewhere along the line. Quill's reaction in Infinity War was completely warranted and 100% In-character! I would have had an issue if he DIDN'T lose his shit.
I think anyone who put too much on Quill wasn't thinking too hard about the movie. The only reason they got to that point was Quill and his plan. And anyone expecting a person to be completely rational in that moment is asking for way too much. He's at best hours past a moment when he had to be prepared to shoot and kill the person he loves at her request. He made that choice, it was taken away from him, and he finds out she was killed by the one person she didn't want to be taken away by. Yeah, he's going to lose it.
That's how the Guardians succeed. They are crazy, reckless, and run off their emotions. It didn't work out there, but that doesn't mean it was all on him. A lot of characters played into Thanos winning in Infinity War. And the only guy that should be blamed is the guy who actually killed trillions of people.

I would also like to point out that Quill was one of just 4 people who were ready to sacrifice to win against Thanos. Even if Thanos made it pointless, he did pull the trigger on Gamora, he was ready to actually kill her at her behest, even if it was hard for him. The only 3 people who can claim to be willing to go to similar lengths in Infinity War are Scarlet Witch, Vision (ENDGAME SPOILERS)
And Doctor Strange, who had to know full well what would happen to Tony when he put them on the path towards victory. Makes his "I am sorry Tony, it was the only way," line take on a whole new meaning in hindsight.
As to why I dont count Gamora herself, it is because that ultimately she was not willing to sacrifice Nebula to keep the soul stone safe, even if she was herself willing to die for it.
Anyone who says that Quill “ruined the plan” wasn’t paying any attention to a word that Doctor Strange was saying during Infinity War.
Quill always had emotional struggles. When his father admitted to killing his mother, how did he react? GOING CRAZY! It’s part of his character, so people can’t just blame one guy
Someone made a comment towards Peter's outrage that sheds a whole new light on the subject, though I cannot recall who it was. Earlier in Infinity War, Peter attempts to kill Gamora as per their promise to each other prior to confronting Thanos. Thanos of course prevents this and takes off with Gamora in his possession. Fast forward to the fight with Thanos and everything's hunky dory and going swell, but then Peter learns that Thanos, might have, most likely, killed his daughter that he loved and cherished. And in that split second, where Peter beats Thanos senseless, he's not beating Thanos. He's beating himself. Because in his mind, he's no better than Thanos save that Thanos succeeded and rid Peter of the one thing he could care about anymore.

I always saw it as Peter is a guy with parent issues, it's understandable but its a keypoint of his character. Then he comes from Ego, his own dad who killed thousands of his own children and killed Peter's own mother, the woman who Ego loved.
Then to see Thanos do it for much the same reason.
I feel like he was reminded too much of Ego, felt hatred that there could be another father out there who was just as cruel and evil to their own kids, and snapped.

After you've seen the film and understand what's coming the "I'm Mary Poppins" line just breaks your heart. I spent allot of energy suppressing tears and it started when Nebula says "... I just wanted a sister!" That was a warning to the audience that things were going to be turned on their head in this film. Love the character arcs in this film.
This movie hits me different than the rest of the MCU for similar reasons. My mom had just taken my brother and I out from under my very abusive dad like, 2 days before I went and saw GoG2 in the theatre.

I def hear you with that. I saw Guardians 1 in August while my dad[he was a love/hate figure in my life] was fighting his cancer. Made the first part hard to watch but when he passed in October I couldn't watch Peter's mothers scenes that next year. Still kind of can't and the actress looks like she's in decent health compared to the real thing[it's a movie. No issue with that.]. So imagine getting to Guardians 2 was 'interesting' to watch because of that. So I'm really glad your mother got you and your family away from your dad.❤

It’s like everyone forgot or just didn’t watch Vol. 2 that Peter is a just a ball of feeling and lashes out when the one he loves are hurt. Ego killed his mother and Peter immediately tried to kill Ego so it totally makes sense that Quill would attack Thanos when he realized Gamora is dead. It’s the same thing with his mother, Ego claims he loved Quill’s mom and said he had to put the tumor in her head so he can continue his plan just like how Thanos killed the daughter he loved so Thanos could get the Soul Stone.
Who said it didn't make sense for his character.
Kye Dysarthria some people who blamed him for his apparently “idiotic move” in IW. Personally, it’s completely understandable and human to do what Quill did in IW. Besides, if he didn’t, Thanos would still win anyway, so he *needed* to do that.

No one is thinks it's stupid that he would want to kill thanos for what he did; they just think that most people could shelf the anger for ten seconds so that the person they want to kill is without their most powerful weapon, or just help take it off themselves. It may make sense for the character, but that still doesn't stop it from being a stupid move.

This is by far my favourite Marvel movie. I could think of a dozen scenes from it that I'd watch an episode on. I feel there's so much for people to relate to, and I think Nebula might be my favourite MCU character between this, IW, and Endgame, despite her being pretty 1 note in the first. Hope Gunn keeps upping the ante as far as character, themes, etc. go given how much of a step up Volume 2 was. Great essay!
I very much feel the same about Nebula. I am glad she got more focus in Vol 2. I remember leaving the theater thinking she was one of the best parts of it.

That’s what I mention sometimes. People tend to blame Starlord for everything when people like Loki and Dr. Strange basically gave the stone to Thanos. Then there’s other scenes, like the one this video showed. Yeah it was obviously made to lead up to endgame, but you get what I mean.
I know you commented 2 weeks ago but I’m still convinced that starlord doing what he did was the path that dr. Strange saw. Thanos “winning” and the hero’s reversing that.
It’s easy to blame starlord. But if dr. Strange saw that starlord was going to ruin it he’d probably just portaled him somewhere else.

Excuse me while I die laughing: that crying meme caught me off guard. Ego didn't just murder her, he let her die slowly and painfully before his son's very own eyes. That shit is traumatic and I'd personally want something on the level of slow, painful and humiliating for Ego knowing how many lives he's taken.
I just love that, in that moment, my expectations were gloriously subverted. I was worrying that this film I had really been enjoying was going along the common trope of the hero being brainwashed by power and his friends having to snap him out of it through fighting him and appealing to their friendship. Instead, Peter immediately snaps out of it because of his love of his mother. Then he, without hesitation, impulsively kills his father. Now, we know that Ego isn't dead, but I honestly believe Peter thought he was killing him in that moment. It is also why I defend his actions in Infinity War as being entirely consistent with his character. A characteristic that, in this film, was his saving trait, ended up being his greatest self-defeating weakness; much like Thor's overconfidence, Tony's proactiveness and Steve's hardline morality. Gunn and the Russos are geniuses.

The "you killed my mother" scene has a special place in my heart in terms of relating to a character. My best friend, whom I wanted to marry, had seizures and the cause happened to be close enough to the top to operate on, and when she went into surgery she didn't come out alive. If I were to find out someone put them in her and took away her hope of freedom by killing her, what Starlord did would look like a kitten playing with a chewtoy. My grandmother calls that scene "too violent", I call it "not violent enough."

In any other movie, this line would be made purely for comedy or would come off as cheesy, but the reason why lines like this work in the Guardians movies is because of the constant connection we have to these characters. Very few films take the time to really make you feel for the characters at all times. These movies do such a great job at balancing top-notch character-driven humor and flawless heart-to-heart exchanges between these characters. That's why this line means so much.
Taken out of context, we would have no reason to care about his Walkman, because to most people a Walkman doesn't even compare to the value of your mother. But to Peter, they're one in the same. His Walkman is the essence of his mom. And that's just so beautiful to me.

The way I see it, the one thing that saved the universe in GotG 2 was Peter's deep love for his mother. Otherwise he'd have done as Ego wanted. So it made perfect sense for his character to lose it when he found out Thanos killed Gamora, another special person in his life. It was horrible he did it, but it's what I'd have expected from him. In one movie his love saved the universe, in another movie that same love doomed it. If that's not poetic, I don't know what is.
Also Guardians movies were my personal faves.
As a fan of these films, this was an excellent analysis. I also admire the fact that you were able to open up and put such a personal spin on this scene. Congratulations for being cancer-free for a decade.

I understand how hard dealing with cancer can be. Especially as a kid. I got Leukemia when I was 17 (not quite a kid, but still young). I had only gotten to experience about 6 weeks of my senior year of high school when I got sick. I had to do all of the school work I would have done in school all while dealing with the chemotherapy and throwing up every hour or so. Even though I was still going through treatment, I forced myself to get back home in time to be able to go to prom and my graduation ceremony. I was lucky enough to go to St. Jude to get treated, and they had some amazing resources to help with coping. I'm glad you're doing well, and I've been cancer free for a year and a half now. I'm still dealing with a lot of side effects and pain as a result of treatment, but I am doing much better than I was. The trials we go through are what makes us who we are. Dealing with cancer showed me the fragility of life, and made me appreciate every day so much more. Going to St. Jude showed me how blessed I was in getting it at the age that I did, because I was old enough to understand what they had to do and why, where as a baby or small child wouldn't. There were so many younger children and babies who looked happy, even though they were probably in pain, and definitely confused on why they had to do the things they did, and about what was going on around them. I got to make some new friends through staying in Memphis, on St. Jude campus, who knew exactly what I was going through and who I could share my experienced and pain with. Everyone has trials they deal with and they are all equally important, but cancer is one of the toughest things I've ever had to go through. I loved the video too, by the way.
Kids who die of cancer don't grow up to have cancers kids of their own. Humanity is insane for allowing weakness to corrupt the species. How selfish you are, to think your existence is worth future suffering.

I know I'm about 2 years late, but the first Guardians brought me to tears very early. In August 2013 I was living in Olympia, Washington and received the news that my mother, living in Connecticut, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I flew over to be there when she had surgery in September, then flew back to Washington. In February of 2014 she developed a life-threatening blood clot in her leg, which is something that pancreatic cancer can cause. Flew over again, flew back again. Both times I told Mom to just say the word and I would drop everything to move back to CT. She didn't, and I used that to justify living on the other side of the country while she went through hell. In May of 2014 my dad called me. She wasn't expected to get through the next 72 hours. I was on a plane the next morning. She surpassed the 72 hours, but only by 30 or so. Only time I've ever seen my dad vulnerable. After the funeral, I went back to the west coast and tried to get on with my life. When Guardians Vol 1 became available on streaming my roommates suggested watching it, and I agreed. Watching Quill run from his mothers room as she was dying brought up a lot of guilt and sadness I had been able to suppress. Cried so much it hurt, physically hurt. All from a movie with a talking racoon that's best friends with a tree.
This scene gives me chills, I remember seeing it in theatres and hearing the opening moments of The Chain and just... my god
I wasn't ever a huge Marvel fan until recently, and I still haven't seen all of the films in the universe. But The Guardians of the Galaxy films are by far my favourites, I decided to watch the first one because I like Scifi but I fell in love with the world characters and stories. They are the perfect combination of action, comedy drama and heart, in my opinion.
Great video! I loved both Lindsay Ellis and Full Fat's video on Guardians, and I'd definitely put yours up there with them. It takes a brave man to get personal when analysing a film, but it's a testament to how good Vol. 2 is that it almost becomes an essential part of it. Also, it takes a very well crafted video to be 17 minutes and not boring, so here, have a sub.

I love the development Gunn gave all the Guardians. In vol 2 Drax has 2 moments that underline the "show don't tell" ideal. There is a moment on Ego when Drax is watching the sunset and tells Mantis that it reminds him of his wife and daughter. He is so stoic and calm, and she sets her hand on his shoulder and his absolute sorrow causes her to immediately begin bawling uncontrollably. Later when he is carrying unconscious Mantis and Ego begins swallowing him into the ground, he doesn't try to save himself, he holds her as high above his head as he can, selflessly sacrificing himself.
Drax is an amazing character, most people know him as a joke character who exist for comedy, but he is very caring even if he was very literal, also his “why is gamora” joke that a lot of people know is the actors own joke he made
Ego is a great villain has a reason why, doesn't play *"oh poor me I'm a victim."* , doesn't cares about who he kills, and is cruel/ruthless.
He does sort of play the 'I'm so alone' part a bit, but luckily not so much since its not that clear he's the villain to start with. He even does a decent job of seeming like he's the big shot Dad who screwed up by never being there for his son and trying to make amends.
The scene where Peter confronts him about never going back to Earth for him and Ego's response being 'I couldn't go back to an Earth where she wasn't alive' seems entirely genuine in its grief over her death.

Until i was like: man yondu handled the Ravagers,the goldies dont present much of a threat,and nebula is just one person. Who the fuck is gonna be the villian but ego?
A favorite scene is still "Why do you want to save the galaxy?" - "Because I'm one of the idiots who live in it"
That just like everybody else moment was my favorite part of GotG v2, the music, the line delivery, it was great.

Ego is a really well written villain in the context of the hero’s story. His personality and plan contrasts and compliments everything that the first movie and part of the second movie led up to so well.
Grew up poor, suffered physical and emotional abuse from both parents, and lost truly loved ones to cancer. I hear you.
Guardians has made me cheer, laugh and cry. These two movies are my family's favourite of the entire MCU.

I volunteer at a local charity shop every Saturday and they always let me pick the music when I'm there; I bought the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 CD before watching the movie after it left the cinema. I got such a warm reaction from the manager (who had never watched any Marvel movies, but who actually recognised every single song!), that I play it every Saturday I go down there. When I finally watched the movie, I knew the entire soundtrack and it was so distracting but also made the entire thing that much more enjoyable. I highly recommend it next time a Guardians of the Galaxy movie comes out.
Side note: watching customers react to Guardians Inferno is my favourite pass time

[Ids5621-Retro] I think it was mainly the humor that took some of people out of it. If the jokes don't land in this movie for you it can kill it for you hard. Me personally, even though some of the jokes were a bit forced at times I loved this movie and see it a mildly flawed masterpiece and is my second favorite MCU movie to this day.

The use of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain in this movie kicks so much ass. Honestly when Quill says "You shouldn't have killed my mom and crushed my walkman...", i hear the music move up in the mix, Lindsey and Stevie start belting out "If you don't love me now, you will never love me again" and Peter tackles Ego, i cry like a goddamn baby.
Though I agree on The Chain being the best, it is actually Father And Son that has a deeper connection to me.
My father taught me and my sisters to sing from a very young age, something to keep us busy on countless long road trips as my eldest sister lived multiple hours away. It became a passion of our family, though only me and Dad keep up that tradition when the radio's not working or there's no good music on.
In the last few years, we've added to our list, adding more modern songs like Angela by The Lumineers and I'll Follow You Into The Dark by Death Cab For Cutie, and a few older ones, one of those being Father And Son.
Countless hours belting out the lyrics, trying to hit Cat Stevens' beautiful notes, and forgetting words created so many memories that I won't forget.
And so, when we, with our shared love of movies and my unending Marvel knowledge, went to see this movie, we were not expecting the final song. We mouthed the lyrics, we held hands, and we mourned a fallen hero.
Just, thank you Marvel.

There is a difference, ego decided for himself to kill Quill's mother, while Bucky was mind controlled.

On 12:20 the proper term you're looking for is the "dolly zoom" effect. First used by Alfred Hitchcock in the film 'Vertigo'. It's also called the 'reverse tracking shot'. It's done with a zoom lens by zooming and moving the camera at the same time.

Quill's reaction in Infinity War was in-character and he's still great, change my mind.
Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 is my favorite Marvel movie. One of my favorite movies period. And it just amazes me to see how it connects with people in different ways. I can't tell you how devastated I was when I found out about the firing of James Gunn. I felt so much relief when he was rehired.

It's a real good one, and my second favorite. But The chain always gets me pumped and ready to do something as to where I think Brandy is just a real good listen. I can't listen to Cat Steven's Father and Son now without getting all misty eyed XD
When Ego drops the bombshell that he killed Peter's mother was one of the few times in the theater where I've let out a genuine gasp. It was such a shocking moment, and everything about Peter's reaction to it is amazing. This truly is one of the best scenes and moments in the MCU I'm glad you talked about it.
Also glad that you mentioned the use of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain. Every time I watch this film and The Chain plays in the finale, I get chills. It's one of the most thrilling and emotionally satisfying action pieces in the whole MCU.
The cool thing is that they make you think you already predicted the big twist, being that ego is evil. The real twist being the mother thing which is so clever

This idea of “One Marvellous Scene” was so good and this video is another on the list of perfect encapsulations of what makes a “Marvellous scene”. I too love these movies (and this scene) and I certainly have not had the same trials as you or any of those characters, but these movies speak to me as a human being all the same - because these characters, the actions they take, the music they listen too (I’m heavily musical and these movies basically are my taste in music) are so undeniably ‘human’ that despite being a wacky colourful space opera, It still hits home and hits hard.
