    Great video. Wish it was a manual. Just a quick correction regarding the wing on the GT3. You stated the velocities above the wing are faster than the velocities below the wing which what creates the down force. Actually it is the opposite to what you stated, as this creates a lift as faster velocities yields lower pressures. On a car the wing is inverted as you stated and the velocities flowing above the wing are actually slower creating higher pressures than velocities flowing below the wing and that’s what creates down force. I am sure that’s what you meant but just pointing it out. Mark

    when is the manual review coming? i am 1 mo into ownership and can say it IS the best manual i have ever driven. the copper bushings and the snappy grind on gear shifts is drool worthy, promise. and the ability to shift without lifting off the gas is a bizarre yet entertaining experience. rev matched downshifts a bonus as well.

    Your explanation of the effect of the wing is backwards and wrong. In the video, you say that it is the reverse of an airplane wing and that it makes the air go faster over the top. Actually, on an airplane wing, the air goes faster over the top, which lowers the air pressure there, creating lift. On a car wing, air goes faster over bottom, creating downforce. This is why car wing is flat on top and curved on bottom, while airplane wing is flat on bottom and curved on top. The car wing also creates some downforce with its angle of attack.

  • @oooining

    Dude, the rear wing is not there to slow the air beneath the wing; it should be the other way round, the downforce is created by slowing the air on top of the wing hence increasing the air pressure on top of the wing to press the car down into the tarmac.

    I first saw this vid when you first posted it as I had traded in my .1 gt3 and was waiting for the arrival of my .2 some two or three months after you posted this video , needless to say that I was consuming everything .2 GT3 . Your enthusiasm kept me going until my car showed up .
    I’m happy to report that after putting 35,000 km on my .1 , and now 7500 k on my .2 the first driving season which just ended because of winter ... the .2 is 10-15 % more car . More agile , noticeably more torque , overall much sharper not to mention no more puff of blue smoke on initial cold start up that was/is inherent to the .1 . I wasn’t really looking to upgrade but the planets lined up and I’m the proud owner of a .2 gt3 . FYI , I got the PDK , some days I wish I had the manual but to be honest , I think the original intent of the engineers was to have the incredible engine paired with a pdk because unless you have freakin supernaturally quick eye/hand/foot coordination , you can’t match the performance of this engine . It’s wasted on a manual in my opinion . You might as well have gone back a few model years and paired a manual with an engine with 125 less hp . That would be a better match . Thanks again for the vid . Your enthusiasm confirmed my purchase .

  • @askegg
    @askegg 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, but how does it sound?

  • @tadficuscactus
    @tadficuscactus 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Flat sixes and flat fours do not inherently have less torque than other engine configurations. Torque is simply a function of force exerted on the piston multiplyed by the leverage on the crankshaft. The reason he thinks that this engine is low torque is because it has a high specific output. And in order for a car to have a high specific output they need to have a high horse power for the engine size. To tell if a car has high torque you need to look at its torque to displacement ratio. Also for a subjective driving experience perspective cars that have their peak torque higher in the revrage can feel less torquey because the torque surge does not come on as immediately. Anyway I could go into more details but the fact is that he is straight up wrong about saying that flat sixes and fours are less torquey.

  • @edysinsimon8646
    @edysinsimon8646 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Driving the naturally aspirated motor of a 3.8 flat 6 is so much more satisfying in terms of knowing where your power curve is! Cornering and shoot straights are far more confidence inspiring when you know their are no turbos to upset the balance at peak corning and/or technical drives. The turbos from Porsche today are not my cup of tea.The real "turbo" model aside, the current 991.2 reminds me of a castrated cat!

    MotoMan, quit ragging on the PDK. A big reason you enjoyed the car is the well engineered transmission that allowed you to concentrate on driving the vehicle rather than thinking of what gear you should be in. I graduated to a Cayman S with PDK that allowed me to fully concentrate on driving, especially on track days. The PDK always seems to know what gear I need to be in. The longer I drive the Cayman S/PDK the less I find myself using the paddle shifters, it just knows better. The manual transmission is about as useful as drum brakes, carburators and bias ply tires.

    • @zenithred9731
      @zenithred9731 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You obviously don't know what you're talking about. Comparing a manual transmission to drum brakes is like comparing the steering wheel to horse-drawn carriages wooden wheels. From what you describe, driving is not your thing since you need the help of a computer to do it properly. You're better off with an autonomous kitchen appliance. Real drivers buy manuals in order to drive the car fully on open roads, mostly, not to beat the chronograph or the adversary at the racetrack.

      Thank you for proving my point. I have been rallying and tracking cars for over 30 years, probably before you were born. If you want to be a "real driver" with a manual transmission you will finish last. Pull your head out of your behind and look to the future.

      You still insist on mixing apples with oranges. I have raced the PCC for two seasons and also started with regional rallyes in Europe. Nobody's saying we should bring the manual stick back in racing, but when I am driving alone on a perfect twisty road I want to do it by myself, not having to prove anything to anyone by being faster or slower, just having fun driving as it always should be: with a clutch and a proper manual gearbox + heel & toe.

PDK is a bore in comparison, very involving and a fantastic gear box. you state “dont know many people that would take a $200,000 car on a track”. thats the whole POINT of a GT3 though- daily driver AND track day star. it does double duty well. its MADE for a track day. get some track day insurance and go have fun with it.

    Let's cut to the chase- No other car even matters. McLaren 720S? Whatever. AMG, BMW M (Insert fave here)? Yawn. Koenissegg? Sorry, stopped listening. I NEED 2 of these- 1 to stare at when I'm NOT driving, and, 1 to daily drive. BOTH with manual transmissions, please. I have to scroll away from the picture of it- just so I can think. I caught myself in a catatonic state for who knows how long last time I saw it. I used to be a car guy, but, suddenly the ONLY cars that matter are 2018 Porsche GT3's (Two, remember?). Any line I ever 'liked' on any 911 from any year is captured in this 991.2 model, the 4.0 liter NA flat six is delicious at any RPM, and, I too will take the 'stock' seats (heck, I'm over 50 so I want the comfort and adjustability). It's crazy, but, I've lost interest in other cars. I wonder what Chris Harris thinks about it? "Special" I'm sure.

    Wait wait - i thought slower air on top and faster beneath is more downforce... ?

    • @weirdshibainu
      @weirdshibainu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      drea177cha5er no..you just described the Bernoulli effect which is achieved on air planes by curving the top portion of the wing. The air has to travel farther over the top of the wing relative to the underside of the wing. The slower air on top creates less pressure compared to the underside and therefore you get lift.

    • @SquireJethro
      @SquireJethro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The air has to travel farther on the TOP of an airplane wing so it moves FASTER. Faster = lower pressure. Motoman had the right idea, but said it backward. The rear wing on the Porsche has the air on the BOTTOM of the wing move faster, causing lower pressure than on the top, therefore resulting in a downforce.

    Faster air below the wing creates lower pressure, creating downforce.

  • @JimBobbyLouie
    @JimBobbyLouie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm finding myself very frustrated about some of your comments. You are testing a GT3! If you want to complain about the rear wing in your rear view mirror, then don't test the GT3. The wing is there for a purpose...the track. If a Porsche owner never intends to go to the track, then they should get the touring model, or less. Which brings up another point. Your comments about the $5200 seat option. You say no one takes a $200,000 car to the track? Quite the opposite. I see people every weekend at my local track (NCM Motorsport Park, Bowling Green, KY) with not only very expensive cars, but extremely expensive trailers and RV's/trucks hauling them to said track. I can assure you that enthusiasts invest far more than $200,000 to enjoy a track experience, not everyone of course, but a lot. The wing is not there for looks. It was not placed higher than the last model for looks either. It is placed there for downforce, and placed higher for cleaner air for MORE downforce! If you understood this, you would not be reviewing this car from the perspective of someone who only drives on the street. But I guess a lot of owners bought their GT3 just to impress, not for track, so maybe you do know more than me after all.

    Actually, lack of torque DOES make a difference. Both Motor Trend and C&D said the 911 T was FASTER than the GT3 on winding roads.

      Fluterra felt faster*... performance wise the gt3 is on a different level.

      The base 911 T underperforms in every category ... it does have a fabric door pull though ... lol

    4:01 "it is eight tenths of an inch taller". Why not sixteen twentieths or thirty-two fortieths? Next time try reducing the fraction i.e. four fifths, 4/5, like your 5th grade math teacher taught you.

    ...for me its still just another petro burning environment polluting pecie of shit car. I want zero emission vehicles and I want Porsche to be a leader in my future car choices. You build what I want and my generation wants and we'll be your customers forever.
