About a year ago I told my sister, "Hey I've got an interesting arranging challenge for you. But you'll need to learn how trombones work." Twelve months later, she's expertly turned that idea into a viral video! Congrats sis! 😄
I'm not musically intelligent. What makes it possible for the slides to move in unison and opposite and still be... not discordant (is that what I'm trying to say)?
Each position of the trombone has multiple pitches available. They can change their mouth shape to get different pitches within each position. This is written in Ab major, which I found was the best key to be able to make the pitches from opposite positions harmonize well together. It was definitely a learning curve for me as I am definitely not a brass player!😅
@@yonatan62 I had some great friends and teachers who took the time to explain a lot of things to me. I've still never actually personally played a trombone...I probably should just to say I have 😅
@@musical_chairs15 It's a pretty easy instrument to start on. The embouchure isn't difficult. Heck, I once picked one up (well, a sackbut really, but same as a trombone, only smaller) and played accompaniment to my band for ten minutes. When the trombonist said, "I didn't know you played the trombone!" I had to answer, "I don't!" (To be fair, I did play Eb horn for a month or so when I was in the fourth grade. That might have helped.) Fun composition, amusing performance. Thanks. :)
So basically, someone wrote an entire trombone duet where the slide positions always added up to 6. (Either they're both at third position, or one is at second and the other at fourth, or one at first and the other at fifth.) That's genius.
I'll be happy to see this pop back up in my recommended in ten years, can't believe this wasn't made in like, 2012. Feels straight like old youtube content
There have been hordes of comments like this on around half the videos I've watched in the last week. That's the point where you should ask if maybe it's not an "old TH-cam" thing. This is just a normal ass video; you don't need to assign something so arbitrary to it. Just let it be what it is.
It goes back to horse racing and bugles that don't have any valves. If you just change your embrasure, you can blow a set series of notes. Bugle calls just use those notes.
This is such an interesting concept, and a catchy song, too. So, now I'm trying to think of any other instruments whose natural movement could let you "duel" like this. The best I've thought of so far are a pair of string players, sitting closely enough that their bows are just barely staying out of one another's way (which would look kind of like a saw); or two people playing mallet percussion instruments, and either "crossing swords," or trying to avoid doing exactly that. But yes, the trombone is special. It's much cooler than a lot of people give it credit.
Awesome! Reminds me of Der Spiegel, a violin duet attributed to Mozart where the score is one page, one violinist playing right-side up and the other playing upside-down!!
Thank you for reminding me of mirror duets. I once played one - great fun! (The one I tried can be done with flute and violin, if the violinist takes the orientation that ranges below middle C). With a little internet searching, I found that there are 4 mirror duets that were attributed to Mozart (though modern scholarship thinks they pre-date Mozart). Bach wrote similar pieces, called crab canons (because crabs walk backwards as well as forwards) or table canons (because the musicians stand on either side of the table).
Imagine being the composer giggling to yourself as you write a chord in a specific way to make the trombone slides look like they're pulling on wach other.
I remembered each slide position of the trombone was used to play multiple notes... but this was a visual example of when trombonist must and can get by with not moving the slide to change the pitch of the trombone! Wow!
Aaah, love me some good instrument silliness. And extra good when it involves trombones. They hold a special place in my heart as I used to play when I was a kid, and my dad (as well as a few other extended family members) still play to this day.

I go to school with the composer. She’s crazy talented and I’m excited that her work is getting popular. Interestingly enough, she’s a violinist and pianist, not a brass person at all. I find it funny that her most popular composition is for trombone. 😂
this is so funny cute and cool ppl dont know how easy hard it is to play trombone (I witched to Sax) so to be able to change tunes without sliding too little or too hard let alone not hit each other with the handle face to face like that, is quite a lovely start to my day actually. those are heavy and also need to be constantly on top of lubricating the slider and unfort the emptying of the spit valve lol. So if anyone heres a Tromber Keep it up :D
Its seriously the easiest instrument ive ever learned. You learn seven positions and about 4 basic mouth shapes. Accuracy can be wildly off in most cases and still sound fine. It took me two hours to learn and at the end I was operating the slide with my right foot. Now getting good at it is different but still one of the easiest imo.
@@jerbear7952 i never said it wasn't easy either but its a challenge because of the weight and size. what makes it hard is positioning the slid to the right notes because theres no way to tell, only by ear is what I'm saying also the condition of the instrument matters too. I switched because I kept pinching my fingers, thats the major part of it that sucks mainly tbh but again i started back in elementary school i preferred the sax to me the sax was easier and better
