  • This reaction to Ren's Tale of Jenny, Screen and Violet was long. I tried to cut it down as short as possible but there are so many intricacies that are worth exploring, so many details in his music, guitar strings, lyrics, and vocals to break down... This was tough, the story was messed up but very well thought out creatively and very well told musically. REN is impressing me so much.

    Ren really is a Master Lyricist and Storyteller. He flits across multiple genres to tell his tale, with Rap elements just one tool in his kit.
    His capacity to draw the Viewer into the tragedy and drama of each piece, like a Witness, while he lays bare the twists and turns of the human condition, is truly Shakespearian. Music and Drama Teachers and Lecturers are starting to bring Ren's work into their curriculum, for their students to study, and deservedly so.
    # Hi Ren! I wouldn't worry about any Grammy! This is a far more significant accolade.
    Meanwhile, Ren is not just spotlighting these stories for 'shock value' He leaves us unable to 'look away'. Why? So we can look at ways to take action - to prevent innocents from turning into yet more victims - and perpetrators.

    Stories such as these have long been suppressed and often kept in the deepest corners of family closets. They need to be exposed, like scabs ripped open, and then talked about so that future Jennys, Screeches, and Violets may be spared similar fates.

    I think this is supposed to lure us in through the beautiful storytelling to engage with circumstances that we would much rather not think about. Yes, the semblance of Violet and violent is powerful. Doubly, in Britain we talk about someone being a shrinking Violet when they are shy and silent, and Stevie paints her black and blue, violet. This is the cruellest story that Ren has. There is one equally dark, How to Be me. It is an equally important message, but it hits really hard. Can I suggest something completely different next, to get your mind out of Ren's dark and deep stuff? Go for What you want, which has a Beastie Boys vibe, or Losing It, which is just rap for fun and showing off. I hope you are ok.

      Black and blue for Violet... I can't believe I missed that one it was right there! The expression, I was not aware of that either. Thank you for taking the time to explain it. I love doing reactions because other people can fill in the holes that I missed. I did a poll and most people wanted the Hunger, so that will be my next one. But I'll definitely do these too because at this point, I want to watch his whole catalog. Yes this was a brutal watch, but it's kinda like everyone has to experience Romeo and Juliet at least once in their life. I'm glad I watched it, the creativity and artistic approach he took was so perfect for this type of story

      @@xFayze Got to agree with all of the above suggestions...
      For rap : "The Hunger" (personal statement), "What you want" (happy fun retro), "Losing it" (absolutely epic work, his BEST creative flows on display) and "Genesis" (personal)
      If you fancy something non-rap, and you've already seen his "Chalk Outlines"... then I'd say "How to be me" is a great personal piece.
      Some important background on "How to be me", which fits more into his "Chalk Outlines" mental health (singing) vibe. It's filmed live, one-take, on a bridge _(not a rooftop as some folks suggest)_ ... and this is important! Rens best friend was suffering. One day he left the house in the middle of the night and killed himself on that bridge. The song and its timing and location, together, form a sweet and deeply personal tribute.
      It helps to know this background before viewing.
      To add my own (semi-rapping Ren) suggestion, I'd go with an angry 2-part social commentary piece that follows nicely from "Sick Boi" and which was referenced by 'Rens demon' in that 'She sells sea shells' taunt from "Hi Ren" :
      "Money Game (live one-shot video)", and then;
      "Money Game part II" (also a one shot video)

    I know I’m late to this reaction (well done by the way), but one of the things I love about Violet’s Tale (as much as one can love such a dark tale) is how it reframes Jenny’s Tale.
    While Screech is clearly described as being 14, Jenny’s age is not mentioned, though by the end of Violet’s Tale we know she is 14 as well. So when Jenny is first presented, she is described as walking by herself at night in high heeled shoes, which is normal for a grown woman, who we might assume Jenny to be, given what we know of her at the start. But with the reveal that she is 14, and like Screech probably raised in foster care or the street itself because her mom is dead and father likely in jail for causing the death, we are left to wonder: Why is a 14 year old walking the streets at night in high heeled shoes, hoping to escape from her life? I have my own answer, but I’ll let others come to their own conclusion

Then he delivers that performance that just pulls you so deep in Violet's story that you forget about Jenny and Screech. And then the twist is like a slap in the face that you reminds you that this was a part of their tales for a reason

    You touched on it in your reaction about the patterns of abuse and how people that are abused in childhood tend to find abusive relationships in their adult lives. Ren highlights this so well in both Violets relationship with her father and then with Stevie but also takes it further by this passing through genetics to her children. Violets instinct when dealing with these situations was to be silent and Jenny was silent and still like her mother, Screech like his father Stevie once inebriated especially became abusive and violent. The intricacies of the story are so detailed it’s unreal and the nuances you discover with every listen seems endless and considering this is 3 tales that last 13 minutes it’s just incredible. Also it is a story that you just do not forget and that is a testament to the pure artistry that is the tale of Jenny and Screech.

    Was a really good reaction and I hope you are doing ok. You tapped into my fascination with this trilogy/Ren when you stopped for the ABAB rhyme explanation while still right in the middle of being upset by the content. And then you went right back to being invested in the story. I do the same thing with the guitar lick when Patrick won't answer the door. Ren presents an almost hopeless tragedy using minimal external tools with but achieves maximum creativity, efficiency and artistry. And he is such a great rapper/writer/musician/singer/performer that he can make us react emotionally to the story and fascinate us with the incredible delivery in the same run/bar(re)/chord/lick/rhyme/phone call. I think Sam is doing the same thing with lighting/angles/distance/focus/motion but I know even less about that kind of manipulation of my emotions other than these 2 were made to work together on this masterpiece.

      I feel you in one sense, he's a victim of circumstance. Committing an irreversible crime where there's a permanently broken victim is the line for me though. I strongly believe that however messed up of a life you may have, every human being knows the severity of taking another's life. Maybe there are exceptions, psychopaths, people who are mentally unstable or psychotic who can lose control and make a mistake. Now im conflicted. But he also pulled a knife on the cop. You can hide from this stuff and stay in a safe and sunny place, but the importance of facing these realities and bringing awareness to breaking the cycles is the entire point of these stories. We NEED to face these things…ESPECIALLY those who have not actually experienced them. Without the exposure, we can’t relate in the slightest, and we continue to leave those who have lived it alone to perpetuate the cycle further.

    xFayze I absolutely love you brother. 🙏 Yours is the first reaction video who REALLY gets the whole scenario here. The fact that Violet's father was sexually and physically abusing her ( probably why her mother was a drinker )... and that the abused usually attract another abuser ( in this case Stevie ) / the fact that her name ( Violet ) is so closely connected to the word VIOLENT ( Ren does nothing by chance ) I have been a singer songwriter ( lyricist ) since I was a rebellious teenager - I adore poetry and also the art of RAP ( the use of syllables as a percussive instrument and the precision of the placement of rhyme / half rhyme is a precious art form ) You never missed any of it. I bet, after listening again, bereft of " reaction " you see it all so much clearer ( and yet, you got it on first listen ) Your reaction to the " PUNCH LINE " was precious brother. To me, the " GENIUS " of Ren is he totally understands ; to get the maximum impact of this story, it has to be played out in reverse. I have never, personally, witnessed anyone who is so naturally creative at the very highest level as Ren. I totally get that it upset you ( it upset me too ) but the beauty of the whole trilogy was that ; the cycle of abuse had to be broken, even at the severest cost ( God only knows how far this went back in this dysfunctional family ) and it eventually came to its tragic end when Jenny and Screech were both killed merely a street apart / just as their tiny new born bodies had lain merely a hospital bed apart 14 years previous. Thanks xFayze - I have subscribed brother x

    Brilliant reaction video. You clearly felt this very deeply, and the ending hit you exactly as it did me. I understand completely why you might say that you'll never watch it again, but frankly I think it's a shame if you never revisit it. I'm not advocating the glorification of violence/abuse/the repeating cycles they seem to cause, which I don't think this performance does, but on a second, third, fourth watching (some on here will be into the dozens and dozens) there will still be fresh nuances in the performance to notice. Yes, there's a danger that over time we as a society desensitise and become almost numb to things which would have terrified us in years gone by, and I wouldn't want the story here to ever become something that people just watch and think, 'yeah, cool...... what's next?' It was supposed to horrify us, and it did. So, whilst you might not try this version again, would you consider a different version? Ren did a special live performance of this trilogy in front of his home crowd in Brighton. The performance is every bit as good as in these films, but the feel, somehow, is a little less intense. There's a couple of moments of levity, with nervous giggles from audience and performer. Somehow it feels a little less threatening, and it also contains a couple of extra items that were not in the original films. Maybe, in a few months or so, you might like to visit that one? Here it is, just in case! th-cam.com/video/S_hs8EkWeZg/w-d-xo.html

      I totally agree with your take. I was just taken aback and reminded of something a friend went through. But to be fair, I did watch it twice (I rewatched it while I was editing this video a few days later). It's one of those that I'll revisit at a later time maybe, but way later time. Lol. I loved it and understand the importance of what Ren did here though, that's for sure

    I loved loved loved your reaction ♥ I have literally Watched 20 or more. You probably had the most honest empathic response to this trilogy. You got it completely. • @xFayze
      @xFayze  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First of all thank you for subscribing Karri! And this is what makes music so good, being able to transmit a complicated thought, view on the world, emotion all through a short amount of words in a song. The visual, the instrumental, the way his voice sounds and changed throughout the story... it's like each of these little things give you one piece of the puzzle. And then consciously or maybe subconsciously, we piece it all together and just get it. He made it so easy to understand such a dark, but real, repetitive problem in society.

    I think Ren meant to say Jenny was a lady-shaped stalagmite, because they form on the floor where as a stalagtite forms on the roof. Such imagery with his choice of words. He really knows when to emphasise, and what words to use to paint the mental image. Really been loving his art since finding it.
    "Chalk outlines" with an artist named Chinchilla is also amazing and shows off his singing. Heard it about 100 times and every time it hits.

      Stalactites can go to the floor, he wanted the image of her in her high heel shoes.,., On her tip toes, not breathing, a statuesque statue.
      A stalagmite it fat at the base that would be too blobby for high heel shoes. Also it would be slouchy, less tension in the imagery.

      If a person went to a performance and were an abuser do you think it would change them or just waltz away without a care?

    • @xFayze
      @xFayze  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kurtz260 That's a tough one. I think they would have a self realization moment at the very least. Whether they change or not, I feel that depends on the person and maybe even how far past the line they have already crossed in the past.
      For example, I think there's a higher chance for Ren to effect someone who hasn't crossed the line yet, or maybe has only done it once. At that point, it's easier to look at yourself and have that moment to change your thoughts or persepectivd, to realize the damage and severity of your mistakes. Someone who has abused many times or for a long time probably becomes harder to change.

    It is also important. Especially for youths and for current victims. Again Ren is providing a window for others to be able to see in..... It's powerful. You FEEL it. That trilogy can provide a preventative measure , click in someone's head , an I've seen this behavior before, and not turn down that path. For someone in that situation, if they have been avoiding the reality of that possible outcome, it may jolt them to wake up and seek help to get away.
    Ren provides this window, this glimpse, for you to witness in a safe place. For parents to talk about it with their kids so they have another tool to be safe and make a more informed decision..... Because if you don't know that you don't know, a daughter could become the next violets mother to start 5he abuse from once upon a time.....a NEW chapter for the history books.
    Not everyone will be wanting to watch this over and over, I love his masterful storytelling, BUT I feel it is a tool that parents, teachers should keep in the back of their minds for when the time is right. I think teens would respond better to this than the films they showed us in school. Edge of your seat, tense, edgy. Who knows they may have a friend already going through it and ask for help.
    London city far from pretty....
    You notice how he SPITS those words out at the end....
    In time you will see the brilliance of this trilogy.
    Now you know what it was like to be alive in Shakespeare's time......
    All the best to you & yours
