Think of when it was written. It was a time when sons were being told to go to a pointless war and didn’t want to go, while their veteran fathers considered them to be unpatriotic cowards and family embarrassments. Perhaps Jesus is thinking about dodging the draft, maybe going to Canada or some other far away place and Levon is being less than supportive. But he knows that there’s a good chance they might never see each other again. There’s something so utterly sad about that. Or not. Poetry is tricky.

However, it seems like Bernie Taupin had a lot of affection for America as well as a keen knowledge of American history, and lore. (Revisit Bullet in the Gun of Robert Ford.) Not many Americans at the time would have been familiar with that story, but Bernie was. So, maybe he was being sympathetic to young GI's on their way to Southeast Asia. It would be interesting to ask.

In high school in the 70s I was an Elton John fan. I bought every album as soon as it was in the local record store. My dad was a jazz fan. He had Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, Ray Charles, Stan Getz among many albums. One day when I came home from school I found my dad on the sofa, his eyes closed, headphones on and singing along with Elton's "Someone Saved My Life Tonite" and I thought maybe I have some sense of good music. "'Cause he liked the name," is why the song is called Levon. Levon Helm was a founding member of The Band--who made it big as Bob Dylan's backup band. But the song is not about Helm in any way. BTW, Helm was born in Turkey Trot, AR--about 50 miles from where I was born and raised.
This may not have been his most successful song as far as a money maker but it was very successful in a more important way. It helped establish Elton John as a major recording artist. After "Your Song", this was the first time I heard him on the radio--bought the single and later the album on eight track.

Story is he snookered that song away from Rod Stewart.
Elton: "I suppose my one famous film role was in Tommy, although it didn’t really involve acting, just trying not to fall over while wearing a pair of four-and-a-half-foot Doc Martens.”
He said he rejected the idea of taking the part when it was first offered to him. “They contacted Rod Stewart and I told him to turn it down as well. ‘I wouldn’t touch it with a bargepole, dear.’ Then Pete Townshend from the Who rang me and I felt like I couldn’t say no. Rod was absolutely furious: ‘You bitch! You did that on purpose!’ I’ve obviously spent a significant proportion of my life deliberately trying to annoy Rod Stewart - that’s very much the nature of our friendship - but that time it was completely accidental.”

No Alex, this isn't one of his best songs, it is the holy Grail of Elton John songs. This is the song that made him. His performance of this song at the Troubador in West Hollywood is the thing of legends. There are people that swear he actually levetated while playing the piano. That audience was full of industry king makers that wanted to see for themselves this madman from across the water. He did not disappoint and the rest is history. This is Elton at his finest taking the reigns of his destiny in his own hands and riding that horse for all he could get out of it.

Back then we didn’t care about the hits as much. It was all about the Album and the better songs that weren’t radio hits so to speak. The best songs were often the songs between the hits. Levon was epic. We all had the album and knew every song. Levon played on repeat. If Levon is a B-Side, then God Bless the B-Side. It’s so different now. We play the hit. You pick an album and I’ll tell you my favorite song off it and it won’t in most cases be the hit. Maybe I’m just contrary. IDK. Great job again boys.
