A must to hear...from whence this song was taken.
Live Bonnie Raitt and John Prine, who wrote Angel From Montgomery from 1971, performing a duet.
    It is beautiful.
    Good choice, men.

I prefer Bonnie Raitt singing it by herself. If the duet your referring to is the same one I’ve seen, JP is way past his prime and doesn’t sound so good IMO

RIP to the great Kofi Burbridge, the keyboard and flute player. His brother Oteil was in an early version of this band as well as being the bass player in the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead offshoot band Dead and Company. "Sugaree" is Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia song. Also, I've been following Susan's career since the 90's and I've never read that she was hard to work with. In reading interviews and hearing her speak, she never been anything but gracious. But hey, there could have been that one time...

Well, I had never heard that Susan was a difficult diva to work with until you guys. So I googled it and came up with nothing except that they paid their band and crew out of pocket during the covid shutdown. Doesn't seem like a bad person to me. Her's, Derek's and the band's talent is off the charts to me. Peace!

Exactly, this recent Layla performance shows her as the team player she is, always encouraging the others...when Derek gets some feedback squeal from his guitar trying to get ready for the slide part in the ending instrumental, she just shrugs and laughs it off, not very diva-like behavior

I have followed Susan before she met Derek. She is easy going yet knows her music! She came from a wealthy NE family, trained at an elite music college, yet is down to earth and humble. NEVER heard diva vibes about her. That is why Eric Clapton, BB King and others loved her so. Talented and appreciates and encourages other talent.
Check out “Pity the Fool” live, she is wearing black …
    You will see her vocal
And guitar abilities on fire ! Derek gives her a rose when song ends. After a giving her a towel for perspiration! Lol❤

I've spent some time with Susan. Can't say I know her well, but she was always incredibly warm, generous and genuine. Quick story -- I had lunch with her a few other folks in the band about 10 years ago in Boston. Went to the show that night at HOB and was treated so well by the whole group. Truly something I won't forget. Several years later, I was at one of their shows at the Beacon in NY. One of the band's crew who I'd become friends with brought me backstage. We were catching up, having a drink, and Susan comes up behind me and signals to my friend to take a picture. She gives me "bunny ears" as he took a picture. She remembered our lunch, we chatted for a bit, and she was cool as hell.

TTB is MUST SEE! As for personality, Derek is the most humble, grounded person you'll see in showbiz. Note interviews with Beato, etc. Can't see him aligning at home or on stage with a diva. I'm just going to continue to enjoy the profound soul and relatable presentation by Susan that, in my view, can only come from a place of self-discovery and empathy...

"Angel from Montgomery" is a John Prine classic. Bonnie Raitt does a dynamite version as well, both solo and as a duet with John (who wrote it). You guys need to jump to a dose of singer songwriters. You've done some, like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, but Prine is golden. Hit "Hello in There", "Sam Stone", or "Dear Abby".

I just saw this band last July, and they were fantastic.
Doesn’t matter what type of music you’re into, these guys are a must see for any music lover.
The first song was written by John Prine and it appeared on his self titled debut album in 1972 and was a regular part of his shows after that.
The second song was written by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia and first appeared on Garcia’s debut solo album (“Garcia”) released in 1972.
This song showed up often in both the set lists of the Grateful Dead and Garcia’s various solo projects over the years.

If you do see them you will see she is not a Diva. Mike comes out and sings at least two songs. Everyone in the band has a solo at some point. Also the band as you see it has been together since 2010, except Kofi Burbridge the floutest and keyboard player, who died in 2019 of a heart condition. Anyway, over the COVID shutdown the whole band lived at Susan and Derek’s compound down in Jacksonville, FLA. Together they wrote and recorded four albums between 2021-22, and now they are touring the albums. I hope you listen to I pity the fool next, or listen the the NPR tiny concert.

My request is entirely based on your discussion about the top five female singers. I’m just about eighty and music began in the middle 50’s. Listened to more music than I can remember so reactions are like being young again. Anyway l truly hope you guys will listen to Eva Cassidy singing her rendition of Over The Rainbow. She has sadly passed in 1996 at age 33 from Melanoma Cancer. I am betting that you both will have a new nominee for the top five female singers.

You guys should check out anything/everything from her Austin City Limits performance. She was amazing back in her solo career phase as well.

I like this version. John Prine is an acquired taste--but worth exploring.

This song was written by the late-great John Prine. Bonnie Raitt also does a great version of this song from years ago.

Angel from Montgomery is a John Prine song made famous by Bonnie Raitt. But this is a great version.
    Great band.

The riff, of course, is not just beautiful, it is endless in this song, you can also enjoy the bass that works without ceasing, 53 years of the song, but it still rocks.

Have seen this bunch 2x at the Mother Church, the famed Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Both shows were sell-outs. Now I see why. Top notch all around. Susan studied at Berklee College, Derek a guitar virtuoso ala Duane Allman, 2 drummers, a horn section, prominent keyboards…we met folks there who had seen them in Louisville, KY the night before….go see them for yourselves! Hope to see you there….look for the old chicano in a wheelchair! Your reactions are priceless to me! Cheers!

They did this mashup when I saw them last year. Great show from beginning to end. Go see them as soon as you can. You should also look into the American treasure that is John prine. Arguably Americas greatest songwriter.

“Old lady pinches hurt.” I couldn’t sit still either. Got to see her a few years ago. ‘Angel’ performance was marred but a woman constantly shouting ‘I love you’.

John Prine wrote some good songs.. This one included. I would recommend a song of his called "Sam Stone", or for a less heavy song maybe try "Illegal smile" or "In spite of ourselves" Or his version of this song duet with Bonnie Raitt. We lost John to the Covid pandemic a couple years back. BTW respect for that flute playing..

Was thrilled with the choice, y'all are on a 3 track roll into the center of my wheelhouse. Unfortunately there are several live versions of this I love, but the vocals on this version didn't quite hit to my expectations. Would also recommend the live at Austin City Limits version of "Hurt So Bad", and the studio version of "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever". Hope you get back to Exile On Main St soon.
