Your stonefly explanation matches my experience too. And if you tie stonefly fly lighter color (like golden or brown) and size 14 or up, it matches mayfly larvae too. Stonefly has 2 cerci instead of 3 and I don't think trout can count. So, no matter what small stonefly flies always work.
