    Thank you for the video! I tried fishing briefly during runoff my first year in Idaho, and I went a few weeks back. I managed to hook into some smaller trout on a parachute adams, they were rising like crazy! I actually really enjoy a tenkara rod out there. If the currents are too technical for my liking, I just reach over them!

      Sorry for the delay. I like to use a 10ft 7wt. I like the 10ft rod because the extra 12” gives the rod a more powerful cast and longer reach. I use a 7 wt because some streamers I use are as long as 6”. Also I tend to catch large trout when on big rivers. I can also use it to steelhead fish if I want to.

    Streamer fishing is impulsive for a fish. You are fishing for a fish, not a lot of fish, and you have a chance at large fish. But I have heard different ideas about stripping.

      It really depends on the river. However, I’m on the rivers every week 52 weeks and my observation and the mild winter tells me the hatch has extended longer than normal. Rivers are like people, no 2 people are the same and no 2 hatches are the same. In Idaho I’ve learned some rivers have really good fall and spring BWO hatches while others have marginal hatches. The rivers that are good will have extended BWO hatches. Find these rivers, learn where these rivers are and you will be tossing little olives into deep winter and again in early spring albeit a little bigger olive. The river in the video the BWO hatch starts at 11 and will end at 3 for the past 3 and a half decades, perhaps centuries. Find these rivers, learn them, and they will talk to you. Listen to what she says and you will soon become friends.

      I've used one since my 40's. There is no such thing in fly fishing as being too macho. i look like an old fish hobo on the water. I certainly don't look macho. In fact, most would look at me and think what is this old guy doing out in the river. Little do they know I've been wading the rivers catching trout since I was a boy growing up on the Kern River. You can never judge a book by its cover. To do so is showing one's inexperience. Stay using your wading staff. You'll stay safe and enjoy your experience more.

    Just to be clear, this DS rig uses 6# Trilene 100% Fluro spinning line. A lot of these rigs use spinning line because the trout don't see the mainline, which in this case is 1X or 10 thou. That is a lot lighter than most would want for the leader butt, and a lot heavier than they would want for the flies, but using fluro makes it work, and all you need is one spool that does it all. Great simple rig for bass in rivers, or even some steelhead. If one wants to make it a little more tuned for trout, I would add a 13 thou high viz for the first 3 feet and the knot can just be a blood knot to the 6 pound Trilene. Then if you use, say 4X / 7 thou to loop on the flies, it is fine enough, or 5x, that you won't need to waste all the material to beef up the knot. You can also make the leader out of plain nylon, and just do the fly loops out of fluro to save some money. You should be able to use regular mono for the 2 footers if you are using loops for the flies, that way you can save on the cost of 4 feet of fluro just to make bumps in the line. But I do appreciate the efficiency of making this system with just one spool of mono, however he has a lot more on his lanyard...

      @northwestschoolofflyfishin1543 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes you can do any of the mentioned. Unlike some nymphing styles, there are no rules in DS. I find myself trying new ways to do it now and again. As long as the lead is at the end of the leader it’s DS.

    • @northwestschoolofflyfishin1543
      @northwestschoolofflyfishin1543 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good midge patterns in small sizes are sometimes hard to come by. It’s easy to find large midges. The most important thing in a midge hatch is size and color. My lead fly is a suspended midge pupa dropped with a zebra midge Both size 24. Patters I use are down wing midge, Griffith nat sprout midge. These represent hatching midge pupa at the surface. This is representative in my lead fly. A good strike indicator so to speak. A zebra, black beauty, and this genre type fly represents the emerging pupa in the surface film and is my dropper. If a trout rises to your fly and then refuses it this generally means for you to go even smaller. A paint seine put over your net is a great way to see what trout are eating same with a stomach pump.

    Thanks so much for the great explanation of how to construct this leader. I'm a little bit confused though about the length of the leader. When I add the various sections of the leader all together; 30" + 10" + 10" + 8" + 3", I end up with a leader that's 62" long or approximately 5 ft in length. If you start out with a 7 ft length leader to begin with, where does the extra 2 feet go on the leader ?..... Do I just cut off that extra 2 feet of leader length ? Also can this setup be used with an indicator ?

    • @northwestschoolofflyfishin1543
      @northwestschoolofflyfishin1543 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment. Some things I do now are a little different than I showed on the video. There has been a great amount of interest in drop shot nymphing especially since I do quite a bit of videos on it. Because of this I just wrote a book on it, Drop Shot Nymphing, An Anglers Guide to Successful Nymphing. A lot of the newer ways I Drop Shot Nymph, and much more are in the book. As of last week, you can pick up the eBook version on Amazon Kindle. The soft cover book should be available in a couple of weeks. So that being said, I make all my leaders the same length, close to what I described in the video. I do cut the left-over leader material. What is new is I use a 30-to-36-inch extender between the fly line and the leader. This is a permanent fixture to my nymphing fly line. Now all my leaders, from 8, 10 and 15 lb. are the same length. If I need a longer leader, I just use a longer extender. I would refer you to a video in my channel called the Tying the Universal Leader. Here I describe using the drop shot leader with an extender. In the book I write quite a bit about it. I hope this helps. Any more questions I would be happy to help.

I did notice that the river does not seem to hold fish anywhere the light allows you to see the bottom. Thanks for the tip on the rubber legs I caught four on those but I did manage a 15-16 inch fish on a big prince nymph which apparently is pretty uncommon according to your experience. @@skitteryoh9949 Good question. Like most forms of modern nymphing and drop shooting you must move your nymphs at the same speed of the river or slightly faster to maintain a tight line. To do this your rod is constantly moving ahead of your leader maintaining a tight line. Done correctly, and you have a tight line from your nymphs through your leader into the fly line to the rod and eventually to your hand you will feel the strike the instant the trout takes the nymph.

    Amen Mike. My goal this fall is to catch a coastal chinook on a fly. Went out last Monday and saw about 50 dark fish in pretty clear water. They did not want to have anything to do with my flies so I improvised. I figured right or wrong that they had been down in the bay so long that they were only focused on getting up and spawning. I switched to a drop shot and caught 5 or 6 sea run cutthroat trout. All that I had was my 9’- 10 wt rod but I sized the line down and fished😁 I figured that practice reading the water after and working on my feel was worth it. I may go out tomorrow and will take my 10’6” euro rod with me in case I can’t draw interest from a salmon. Forever practicing. Thanks

    Awesome video,with 40 + years of flyfishing & tying under my belt,the how come,what for & why never goes away,time at the tying table or on the water is & always be something for me that I control & enjoy,while on the water,it causes me to slow down,stop,clear my mind & escape the rush,rush life,the places,people I meet & yes the fish are the icing on the cake,to explain it to some is impossible,but your video did an awesome job of clarifying it,everyone has their reason why,as my late wife once said,take your troubles to the river,let the river take your troubles,tight lines & bent rods 🤙 🇺🇸

    I do the pre-tied loop but I lasso the tag end through the loop around the leader and cinch it down - around and through… then I have a baggie with a bunch of these tags and just whip one out when my other one gets too short and lasso it and tie the fly on after. The lasso is stopped by the surgeon loop knots or in my case blood knot. Easy to put on and remove and the tippet can rotate 360 degrees … reduces tangling.

      @@northwestschoolofflyfishin1543 ahh see I watched part two and you basically do the same thing that I was describing but I don't tie the fly on first ... guess it's a habit because I use a similar rig for saltwater and the flies are too big to run them through the loop. It works for me though.
