I'm a Cats supporter and i remember this like it was yesterday. I yelled at the TV, "Aker was your only chance of a possible premiership. Without Aker, youz will get SMASHED in the finals now!" And I WAS RIGHT!!
Now more interviews have come to light here on youtube whether it be on FOXFOOTY's Open Mike, or his radio gigs. Once you hear his side of the story, it is clear that the leadership group were being totally unreasonable. So what if he's an eccentric individual.. He played with exciting flair and contributed to 3 Brisbane flags because they accepted him for who he was. The Bulldogs tried to mold him into a robot with no personality and then wonder why his form had dropped!? I understand where Aker is coming from here as i've experienced similar circumstances except that i've jumped before being pushed, so to speak. Because i really identify with Aker, i was so pissed off about this and i wouldn't have been nearly as polite as he was in this video. Seriously, the way they mistreated a triple-premiership player and brownlow medalist was ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!!!

AgreedJason was composed given the circumstances. The death by 1000 cuts comment was pertinent to Jason's career. If Jason was a couple of years younger he wouldn't have been sacked. The clubs position that a "unanimous club decision" decided the fate of Jason's career would be embarrassing for the club leaders to portray if it was not unanimous and was a compromised process eg players liking Jason but out of contract at the end of the year and not wanting to rock the boat. The "smorgasbord" under their president at the time leaves little confidence in the leaders and the decisions they made.

The concept of trust, as described by Rose, is far too ambiguous in relation to a formal dismissal. Jason has every right to ask for a specific example of how he violated this "trust", and exactly how his actions were in violation of his responsibilities as a player. Fundamentally, it was clear that the club and Jason were clashing, however, this (in its self) is not validation for termination of contract.

His line saying “well at least I’ll be remembered” might sum this entire thing up. Gary and James kept trying to get headlines, trying to push him into anger, he kept his cool and stood his ground. Stayed true to himself.

Funny how the reason Jason was sacked was because of lack of trust issues but we never got to hear what he did to break their trust.
P.S even after all that has happened, Jason still kept true to himself with the "Now Piss Off" comment to Campbell Rose. This is the type of character you would run through brick walls for.

The bulldogs went on to win a flag without Acker but he would not have been around anyway. Acker was treated badly by the leadership group and management. Its bullshit reasoning all clubs have issues like that all the time but they dont sack them. The CEO is full of shit how many players in 20 years has this happened to, only Fev I can recall and that wasnt all the supposed players against him. Acker was better off out of there anyway, notably none of them were there when they won the premiership not Eade, Smorgan, Rose, Johnson or Fantasia. They were a rabble under Eade, Rose and Smorgan and not until Gordon took back the reigns did they come out of the wilderness for the flag, now back to rabble status again. The one person who has never been successful is Eade despite 4 clubs he has never achieved above ordinary status in coaching or management roles. Akermanis is a brownlow medalist, three times premiership player and one of the greats of the game and self made. None of the decision makers who sacked him go anywhere near him in character, or courage of conviction.

CEO had to minimise any possibility of unlawful termination/unfair dismissal, but basically it seemed like a case of you are not liked at the club and it's easier to just give you the flick than to keep you on. Aker is right, every decision pre-determined and handling of private meetings is completely loaded. At a certain point it doesn't matter though if an organisation wants you gone you're gone. It is just jarring to me as a fan to see the wasted potential because of some upperty fucks. He should be a mogul in both his legacy as an AFL great and the success he would have made in media. Honestly a pioneer for both the electric style modern footballer and modern media. Tall poppy syndrome.

Bulldogs must be pretty stupid if they dropped AKA leading into the finals regardless of what he's said. Look at his finals record compared to Footscrays. Gary Lyon sounded like he didn't like AKA. At least he didn't root his best mates Missus.

It's ironic now there are no more characters in the game. Just trained, gagged mouthpieces who spout carefully scripted lines. It's a shame really. I find it hilarious professional athletes can't seem to focus on their job and talk about 'distractions'. Surely grown men earning $200 000+ should be able to play with a guy they don't necessarily 'trust', but still produces on the field. It's no wonder the Dogs never won a flag in that period.

What ever happened to us aussies, we were once known as people who called a spade a spade, we were known around the world as people who were fair dinkum, a no bullshit people. Now all of a sudden we are cucks, tip toeing around things like homosexuality, constantly on guard not to offend, being all politically correct. I say get fucked to that nonsense, say what you like, I don't care if it offends me or anyone

Just one of those guys who was brutally honest, and they hated him for it. Make no mistake he's not some dumb footballer he's a very intelligent guy. They didn't like his newspaper columns either for the same reason, it exposed them.

No coincidence Footscray - The Western Bulldogs were playing like rubbish when Jason Akermanis was sacked. They needed someone to blame and deflect attention off themselves, he was a high profile easy target. Nothing he could have done could explain away to this day their bad performance.

Gary Lyon was the big driver of panel criticism in this video. His emphasis was on honesty, and personal behaviour. What a sour irony that Lyon turned out later to despicably betray one of his mates by adultery with his wife.....and then continued in his job!
Akermanis's actions and behaviour were much less of an offence than Lyon's.... but Lyon had the two faced stained moral character to call out others, but do far worse himself.
I never particularly liked Jason..... but have far more respect for his playing skills and personal standards than many other persons and AFL players... Lyon, on the other hand, is an example of too many in life that I have no respect for, because of their own actions.

Just a group of people banding together against a common enemy. Aker was poorly treated, and in the end, it cost the doggies. This ages definitely in Akers favour.

The fact is. society is full of confomists who will throw individuals like Acka under the bus because he speaks the truth.
Also where was his 3 time premiership team mate in Nathan Brown giving his opinion.
Bottom line all that matters to me is can play football.
The Scott brothers one time said of Acka "hes my team mate and i back him to the hilt"

Gees that David Smorgan is a piece of work. What kind of president goes on radio and says every person to a man wanted Acker out of the club? Even if was true you can't go on radio and say it publicly. He should have sued Smorgan for workplace bullying..
