This song is a masterpiece from top to bottom in every imaginable way. And about halfway through every time I watch it live I think "I can't imagine how hard it is not to rush this song."
Man has this guy completely turned his image around, humbled himself, and became a truly good person. This is Keanu Reeves level humanity shit right here.
@@dianebig7857 no, there was a time that he was an egotistical douche. He has said so himself in interviews. He made a conscious decision to become a better person. And I’m glad for it!
Pretty lame solo tho, not good frankly. Uninteresting, no clear phrasing, out of pocket. Still hella incredible seeing how absolutely humble John has become
Love the look of joy on JM’s face watching the kids solo. Those young guys have a great sound and have learned to listen to each other well. The mark of true improvisers and great players.
I was explaining to my girlfriend who is new to playing music that this sort of thing actually doesn't surprise me at all. John Mayer was RIDICULOUSLY good at guitar by the time he was in his late teens. And that comes from just practicing all the time, no two ways about it, which John has also admitted was what he did all the time as a teenager. And that level of commitment to practice is absolutely the mark of someone who loves to write, perform, and play their instrument. John loves playing guitar and playing with other talented musicians (his loyalty to Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan should be evidence enough). John takes two guitar players with him on every tour as if he needed any help. And the guitar players he takes are not exactly young bucks or beautiful people. And John always gives them time to shine; he has them play the rhythms and the leads probably based on whatever they feel like doing. I've seen the dude many times and in many incarnations and he's never come off as vain or selfish on stage and I've never felt like he wasn't playing well or phoning it in. And you don't do 3+ tours a year if you don't like playing and performing; that shit gets old quick if you don't love what you are doing. John doesn't need the fame or the money at this point - yet he keeps going on the road to play for his fans. So - yeah - John is more than happy to show up, sit in with some young musicians - and let them shine on his song. Fucking rock star right there.
John showing he is a true man of music whether playing with Pino and Steve or kids at their gig. Props to John for not being to big to play smaller, the keyboard player for lighting the keys up and the rest of the band for holding on, doing their part (and then some for the guitar) with one of our greatest present-day songwriters and musicians.
Hat's off to everyone, but especially the young guy on guitar. Just straight up taking a solo like its no big deal in front of John Mayer! What confidence - and he did great!
@@mumford5111 I agreed he had chops. He does. Nice fills. But too often. Again, just my humble opinion. I play guitar and am no where on anyone in that bands level. I know John Mayer is also a fan of people who don’t bust out everything they have at every moment but play a bit reserved. It’s whatever, just my opinion, nothing to get worked up about. Strange comment bro.
Mayer is such a master musician. He’s hyper aware of what’s going on around him and listening!!! When he acknowledged the piano player that was a pure moment of musical connection
lets talk about how silky these little drum fills are and how well they really compliment Gravity. awesome all around. great job to the kids and thanks John for showing us again how humble and awesome you really are. these kids have to feel like they’re on top of the World jamming in sync with John Mayer.
So impressed with these kids. And especially the guitar player who solo right in front of Mayer. Can you imagine the nerves? I would have forgotten how to hold a guitar.
The drummer smiling the whole song is exactly what I’d be doing too! Such a cool moment and seeing John allowing the young musicians take the solos was very cool to see too. Great video
A very heartfelt performance. I feel like 'Gravity' is one of the masterpieces of the 21st century. I haven't listened to JM for a while and am reminded of his genius as a writer and musician. Lot of chemistry in this line up too. Very solid guitar solo and then the keyboard solo was amazing. What an awesome concert this would have been.
from a $200k Dumble and $4000 PRS Silver Sky to a $500 Epi and a $200 fender solid state amp, and he sounds EXACTLY THE SAME. Goes to show its whats in the fingers, not in the $$.
That kid on guitar is already has a mental of professional, if i got a job to soloing over john, i couldn't even play a single note while he stares at my playing like that 😂😂😂
These young gentlemen just added 10 years to their experience. That's what happens when a great gives to the future generation. This Is Mentorship! 👏👏👏👏👏
This is what music is about. Thank you John for really getting it and being so humble. It was a long strange trip for you but you definitely did it and showing everyone else how. Thank you and can’t wait to see you on Monday August 16th in Raleigh.
Those keys!!!! Dayum!! I would also like to point out that JM gave the kid the guitar break and didn't play a solo directly after so as to avoid overshadowing the kid's really good performance. That's was a real classy move right there on JM's part. Well done!
This is the best thing I've seen in a long time. Good on John for being, as Jim Olson commented, so generous. When is the last time he had to sing through an over-driving Roland Cube and play through a solid-state Fender Champ? The answer is, probably never. Yet, here he is ... good on ya John Mayer ... good on ya!
People can get his tone, what they can't get is his feel and phrasing. I mean this video doesn't have his typical tone, absolutely no way it can through that rig. And that's fine.
This man is not a guitarist, this man is not a singer, this video confirms the obviously for players ! this man is not only a songwriter this man is John Mayer….. humble, a musician amongst a language very very few have the ability to appreciate, what we see here is a song so well crafted that it’s appreciated by musicians the crowd and the respect all musician give to a song …… its breath is created by the people accompanying the heartbeat that’s the song …. Props to John, he didn't come back to bridge till the other guitarist was done playing that solo. And then John wanted to play the end solo but offered it to the pianist. Respect for him ! He is a musician's musician who respects other, really shows his age and experience.
I think JM has matured a lot and has not hit his ceiling yet as a musician/guitar player (not to discredit anything he’s already done just that I think the future is even brighter for him).
I still believe continuum was his best work and will probably be his best full album of work. He’s done incredible songs since then, but he’s got nothing to prove now like he did with continuum and therefore his albums don’t have the same weight behind them. And that’s ok. He’s just having fun and writing songs that meaningful. He remains to show off how incredible of a musician he is and a living guitar legend. Thank god we have the internet where we can capture as much of we can of his playing for generations to come to experience
I absolutely love this video. The lad on the keys is just insane but the others are so good as well. The lad soloing with Mayer chuckling along. The rhythm section is just outstanding as well When he turns to the dummer to pick the beat up. Fantastic

the real MVP here is definitely the pianist, such a vibe and perfect little fills
Great playing but played way too much. Part of being a great musician is looking at the big picture of the piece
Totally disagree. Who’s song is it? Yeah… it’s Mayer’s song. I’ve been part of many gigs before where the war of lead doesn’t need to happen.
Bet he learned in church...
Great playing for their age
Love that ‘ahh’ from John around 0:25. He loves that piano fill.
That drummer is so deep in the pocket. Solid, tasteful, spot on. Bravo.

Exactly, he didn’t outbid the solo of the kid, just let him play and back to the chorus, that’s classy !

Mayer is a true musician and a gentleman, always ready for a jam.
Imagine the balls to solo in front of John Mayer
But at the same time, you’d know that he wouldn’t scoff at you if you sucked it up- he’d be a gentleman and help you along
I think that solo, because he was scared as f, is at its 50% of its potential

I'd be like jus stuck with pentatonic.
Reminds me of the time I had to show jimmy page the solo on dazed and confused

The pianist was on point, in every moment! Wow!! And well, John is just the best guitarist of our decade, period.
he wasnt tho... he was constantly getting in the way of John's performance... you could even see the discomfort on John's face
On a song like this it’s more about restraint than playing too much, playing like he did on the first verse is almost too much, second verse is ok
He is overplaying, he should know when to slow down
I think the drummer is on point though.
