  • It's getting hot in Texas, so we do what we can to try and keep our chickens as cool and hydrated as possible. Cool water on a Hot day

now that I think about it, what about freezing some water balloons then just remove the balloon and put the ice in the water.

maybe you can freeze bigger blocks of ice so it dont melt too fast. like put some ice in buckets to freeze then add to the water in the center.

How do you like your American Bresse, temperament and heat tolerance wise? I really do want some, but the timing hasn't been quite right so far. My flock also pants regularly in these 100+ Northern Oklahoma temps. I have a barnyard mix, but also some Bielefelders and Black Australorps.

Nice flock, We love the Black Australorps, and want to get some Bielefelders. So far the American Bresse have done pretty good as far as heat tolerance, we are in Texas and currently having 90+ and into the 100's and havent lost any. As far as their temperament, they havent even gotten to full maturity and the roosters are already getting bold with us. So Iwont let the kids in there with them. There is a technique to assert your dominance over them and they become less aggressive, I'll make a video showing how I do it.

My wife would NOPE right out of getting any American Bress then...if the roos tend to get aggressive. Two of our Grandsons got scratched by a FANTASTIC (to the hens) guy (Mr Spot) and he was tough on her also. GREAT protector of the flock, mean to everybody but me. Our current roos seem pretty laid back with us two legged interlopers, so far anyways.
      Thanks for the reply!

@@goldwingnut1954 Yeah if you are unable to keep them in a separate area where kids dont have access to then I wouldn't recomend them. We have ours in their own area that the kids don't have access to. In general people usually have meat chickens seperate from egg layers, but if you're unable to do that I wouldnt risk the kids safety. We don't know what the general public has said about their temperament, we are just going off of what we have experienced. Maybe we just have some A holes, but thats not the norm. I would ask some other people as well who have them. let me know because now I'm curious, lol
