This was so helpful. I have a new DJI Air 3 and last week when I registered it through the FAAdronezone I neglected to indicate that it had RID. Based on this video I was able to confirm the Air 3 is RID active and compliant. Just edited my FAA registration to reflect the active RID. Thanks for showing us where to find the information on the DJI controller. Easy enough. :)

Great content Greg & team! One note with respect to Remote ID for the Air 2s with the Smart Controller. After performing all the necessary software and firmware updates I could not get rid of the constant Remote ID Error (Code: 161000B4) and the accompanying Unable to takeoff (Code: 30064) error in the DJI Fly app. However, what I was finally able to figure out is if you leave the Fly app and perform the following steps you will finally clear those error messages and be able to fly:
    - Pull down the device menu from the top of the screen.
    - Go to the Setup screen (via the gear icon at the top)
    - Scroll down to the "Personal" section and click on "Location" (which, in my case, was set to OFF)
    - Flip the switch from Off to On
    - Choose whatever location "Mode" you prefer (I kept the default of "Device only")
    - Back out of the settings menu and reboot the controller.
    - Problem solved!
PS - Disappointingly, a call to DJI Technical Support on this issue was not helpful in surfacing the eventual solution documented above!

hello PI, can you please clarify the act of going to the faa database to put in your remote ID number does not trigger the remote ID function in you aircraft? it's just a listing in the database and it's a required step but it doesn't determine whether you drone has remote ID or not, it doesn't match up with your drone hardware, and/or the details are not used in conjunction with 3rd party apps that detect rid. i think there is some confusion on this being a necessary step in order to activate remote id, could you look into that please? the number you enter is verified as a valid entry but that's about it, no? not sure what is going to happen in the future.

Hi, I'm confused. Shouldn't the RID be strictly the aircraft SN? I sometimes use different controllers for the same aircraft. If the RID SN is made up of both the aircraft and controller, each combination of different controller and the same aircraft will be different? Since I have some aircraft without native RID and will need a RID module, can I just use the single module on all of my aircraft irrespective if the aircraft has native RID? What is the issue if both the aircraft and module are transmitting RID at the same time? BTW, there isn't any way yet to edit the FAA drone registration entries for recreational pilots. Yeah, I'm a confused recreational pilot.

Currently as a recreational flyer it does not allow me to edit my drone inventory. It only allows me to cancel and or show details. My guess is I will have to cancel the ones that have RID and re-enter them into the system with the compliant selections chosen.

    This is from DJI
We are sorry to inform you that Mavic Air 2 cannot comply with the Remote ID rule by upgrading firmware currently. I'd love to give you a clear yes or no but it is not determined yet whether we will release RID-compliant firmware for Mavic Air 2. Thanks for your understanding.
You do not need to take any action until September 16, 2023. On and after that date, if you continue to use the drone, you will have to comply with the rule in either of the two ways described below:
Operate a drone with a Remote ID broadcast module giving the drone's identification, location, and take-off information. A broadcast module is a device that can be attached to a drone, or a feature (such as a software upgrade) integrated with the drone. Persons operating a drone with a Remote ID broadcast module must be able to see their drone at all times during flight.
    2. Operate (without Remote ID equipment) at FAA-recognized identification areas (FRIAs) sponsored by community-based organizations or schools. FRIAs are the only locations unmanned aircraft (drones and radio-controlled airplanes) may operate without broadcasting Remote ID message elements.
If you decided to comply with rule by adding a Remote ID module to the drone, kindly be noted that the Remote ID module you purchase must be FAA-approved. Follow the Remote ID module instruction manual to properly install it on the drone. You also need to add Remote ID module information such as make, model, and serial number to the FAA drone registry.

Greg, as a follow-up note: We tested one of our DJI drones today (Air2s) to determine whether or not Remote ID transmission is active within the aircraft (all firmware updates were installed).
The "Remote Functionality" message was not indicated on the DJI RC (as you denoted around the "6:30 mark" of your presentation). However, we did launch the Drone Scanner App (Android) and our aircraft was accurately identified instantly within the app. Thus, we are now confident the aircraft's RID is operating, "A-OK!"
I just wanted you to be aware that it appears the "Remote Functionality" message does not appear in all cases pertaining to RID transmission confirmation. (At least based on today's RID test.)

DJI is indeed a mess. For my Air 2S with the latest updates, the Aircraft Flight Controller serial number is NOT the same as new RID serial number. The RID serial number conforms to the format you describe, 1581F . . . . To create the RID, SN. it looks like DJI took the original ID, put the 1581F in front and added a zero at the end.The Flight Controller SN remains the old serial number that the drone was manufactured with. Maybe newer manufactured drones have the same numbers for both functions.

In a previous video you stated Standard Remote ID was the only type that is approved for Part 107. It had to be manufactured with the Remote ID technology. That was a while back. Is that still the case or can I register for Part 107 a drone a FPV Drone I built myself and list a module as my compliant hardware? And if so can I list a bunch of my drones and just swap the module for part 107, or does each drone require it’s own module?

    • @PilotInstitute
      @PilotInstitute  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Let's put it this way, new drones manufactured after September 2022 (not 2023) must be compliant with remote ID, so yes, in this case, new drones should all comply with "internal" remote ID and not module RID. The trick is this: the FAA said that if the drone is build for recreational purposes, it can use a module, but if it's built for part 107, it needs to be "standard" RID. The FAA has since said that they are working on clarifying that rule because that was not the intent.
So until the FAA comes up with clarification, you technically would need to make your homebuilt drone RID compliant internally. Technically...

    • @ivaneberle3972

Just to clarify the question, isn't it true that RID broadcast modules are legal for end users on pre-Standard RID craft (though not for manufacturers after 12/16/2022) , under Part 107, provided it is used only VLOS (and also that BVLOS will be promulgated as an entirely different subsection?)

@@PilotInstitute I would like to see a build video on how to accomplish that and get it registered legally 100% for Part 107 work. Please include all of the red tape and expense involved. As in making the serial number for my home built drone show up in that list on the FAA web site. How do I get this serial number? I don’t recall a serial number on any of my FPV flight controllers. And definitely not one that would pass the smell test with the FAA. They also have a tendency to break or get bricked and need to be replaced. I keep telling people the Avata, realistically, is the only option right now, but they keep insisting that all you have to do is slap a module on your freaking home made Nazgûl 5 and the FAA will issue you a “go-pass” to fly it commercially. I just find that impossible to believe for part 107 registration.
