SIMPLE ULTRALIGHT THRU-HIKING GEAR LIST | (FROM 11KG to 4KG!)

- In this video we go through our recent and now improved thru-hiking gear list that we have been working on over the last 12 months. We originally started the Appalachian Trail with a 10-13kg base-weight but after our short 8-day journey came to an end, we knew that we were carrying way too much stuff...
We returned home in late March and began culling plenty of gear. We were able to test out some new gear throughout 2020 on some of Victoria's longest and best hiking trails.
After 700km of hiking in all weather conditions, we think we have finally nailed our 3-season ultralight gear-list that we think will see us complete a 3-6 month thru-hike comfortably.

WOW! You guys are going to rock it this year for sure. You're kits are impressive. I have only one small suggestion to save some grams: swap out the regular ground hogs to the mini ground hogs. I believe the regular size MSR ground hogs are overkill. Maybe use 2 one for each door/vestibule but I think on the AT you have plenty of strength and support with those minis. Your call of course. I am blown away by these kits, I think they will make a HUGE difference on your hikes. Can't wait! Best gear video I have seen in years too! Well done!

We highly recommend the ZPacks tents! We opted for the triplex as the weight difference between it and the duplex is quite minimal and we really wanted enough room to bring our bags inside 😊

If you'd like my advice, since you're using packs made out of a waterproof laminate I'd ditch the S2S compression sacks and use a nylofume pack liner to let the soft stuff occupy nooks in the bottom portion of your backpack that are otherwise created by the shape of the compression sacks. I'd also pack all your stuff in the order in which you're going to deploy it and you won't need stuff sacks pretty much at all.
Super impressive and inspiring - I'm on a journey to ditch some base weight too and your video is so helpful. Thanks for sharing your full gear list :)
P.S. Are you missing the stove?
Nope!! We went to cold soak and we still do 💪

Oh - one more question - is the rain kilt still working out for you? I'm trying to decide between some froggs toggs rain paints or a kilt.
Hey Eve, sorry the answer to your previous question is yes we are missing a stove. But we do love a cold soak! Our favourite dinner is cold soaked instant noodles with a spoonful of peanut butter 👏 we usually eat it with a wrap too!
As for our rain set up we don’t use rain pants as legs usually dry pretty well. But absolutely love our rain kilt! Would highly recommend! Easy to put on whilst hiking too which is a big plus!
I can't imagine cold soaking. Its so cold 🥶 in the Canadian rockies warm meal is a must.

Hey Evan, we have been busy moving states and getting settled in. We are however heading out for our first overnighter in our new home state today. New video should be up next week and have some exciting things planned for the rest of the year too 👍

We found The Hiking Life blog is great, he does talk abit about some Australian trails and has great insight on gear! The best thing to do when you’re starting out is to just start! Every time you hike you’ll learn something new, be it gear or something else!
We would definitely recommend starting on the great ocean road hike, the campsites are excellent and very easy/achievable distances between them 😊😊

Impressive! In our weather conditions I prefer a completely 2-layer tent, which adds 400 g to the weight. Don’t you use any burner for cooking at all?
No stove at all. All cold soaked meals 😝
Did you buy the packs and Zpacks gear in Australia or ordered from the USA?.

We use a silk one to keep the quilt as clean as possible 👍

Really good gear list. But, you're delusional if you think that compression bandage is enough to sufficiently treat a snake bite. I would strongly suggest taking 3.
As someone who has had to treat a person for a snake bite, I cannot stress the importance of carrying some decent compression bandages and a PLB.
Thanks Rowan, we’re always making little changes to our first aid kit so we’ll keep it in mind! And we’d definitely take a PLB if we were headed out for a long remote thru hike. Thanks for the tips!
