    The Denon DJ Prime 4 has been out on the market for a little over a year now and we finally have one in the lab for the full out review treatment. The Denon DJ Prime 4 is the very first (and only) 4-channel stand alone DJ system that doesn't require a computer to playback your music files. The Prime 4 is a Mobile DJ's best friend as it has many inputs and outputs for all kinds of connection possibilities.
    The Prime 4 has a full color touch screen display with gesture controls that shows all of the information that DJ's need to play a serious set. The Prime 4 has different connectivity options including 4 USB ports, an SD slot, and a compartment on the bottom of the unit for connecting internal computer hard drives.
    Check out the DJbooth.net website for the full review and Pro's and Con's list of the PRIME 4 and be sure to subscribe for more videos and reviews like this one!

    Just want to clarify that the Denon DJ Prime 4 has actually only been out since June this year, The Engine Prime platform has been out for 2 years - some of us in the #primetribe will say that Engine is superior to platforms like Rekordbox, Serator and Traktor, but to each their own - I don't discriminate. The algorithm for adjusting tempo without the pitch is superior and you can bring all previous data into Engine Prime from these aforementioned platforms. What's wrong with Engine Prime, as a software to prep crates, playlists, cue points and loops? It does the job just fine. And if you don't like the feel of the platters, try the SC5000M with the X1800 mixer. I will say that the backup Sata Drive is a plus, the ability to record directly to a USB stick and the zone output options put this puppy head and heals over what the other manufacturers are putting into their products. My $.02.

    Great vid as always, definitely a nice bit of kit. Can I ask your opinion? Denon currently have the 2 x SC5000M and X1800 on sale... As I learnt the trade on turntables, currently using a Trakor S8/D2/DVS and absolutely HATE being connected to a laptop (DVS makes it mildly bearable). Now DJing is just my hobby, I realise there's a lot of similarity in features; however, given there is only a $1000 difference between the Prime 4 and 2 x SC5000M/X1800 what would you go with for home use? Thanks in advance

      Thank you so much for tuning into my videos. It must be a bit more difficult to DJ without being able to see everything so I commend you on that. You can add an SATA hard drive into the bottom of the unit that can be as big as you want. When you plug the Denon Prime 4 into the computer via USB, you will be able to move music into and out of the device. The Prime 4 allows you to navigate through the tracks or folders or playlists depending on how you set it up in the Engine software. You can make as many playlists as you want from the music that is on the drive. Hope this helps and good luck.

      It depends on how you look at it and what you need the most for your setup... The Denon is still the only 4-channel standalone unit to date and it has that great Zone output feature and a way better screen. The Pioneer controls feel more tactile and more familiar to those who use Pioneer Club style gear in the past but it is all still old technology that they are repackaging into a new setup...

    Does Denon DJ tell you reviewers what NOT say about this unit? Or are all of you just not that competent? Same now goes for Mojaxx, DDT and all the other major reviewers. Or are you so into your own style of DJ'ing that you don't consider all the aspects of how DJ's may use the unit depending on what they've used before or use now? I got this unit and I've never gone from super excited to disappointed so fast in my entire 51 years on this earth.
    1. The most important missing function for me is the CDJ mode with stutter. The way CDJ's have worked since the beginning, and still does, including the XDJ-series from Pioneer. You did show how the top of the platter worked different, but you didn't even blink when you paused it, and it worked just like vinyl mode tho it wasn't. Why? To me that is a key function. I decided already when the CDJ-1000 came out that Vinyl mode is not for me, and never will. It's just an effect i can use like any other effect. I don't scratch and rarely play hiphop or any music where that's more or less required. When I started in 1985, if the scratch was heard when you pulled the record backwards, you did something wrong. Then, vinyl mode is nothing like using real vinyl anyway, so I went with the CDJ mode, where I can set cue points on the fly, on the exact same frame every time, in seconds and that's how I play. Doesn't work with the Prime 4. ...and yes, I do up towards 25 gigs/month, so changing the way I play is not gonna happen.
    2. When you connect external players/turntables, all the effects are disabled but the filter. How's that for a surprise when you hook up your existing gear to it, and you didn't mention that either.
    3. Utilization of the screen is terrible. The overview when in browse mode is on par with the first gen CDJ-2000's, where you can't see the whole filename, but has to wait for it to scroll, and only six rows at a time, on a 10'' screen? I see a lot more on my NXS2's 7'' screen and I expected something like when I use Remotebox on my XDJ-R1, but not even close. Also, in browse mode all you get is a timer counting down the time... Compare that to what info you have on the RX2's 7'' screen no matter in what mode you are.
    There were more stuff but those were the immediate things that hit me, despite watching and reading every available review for several months before I bought it. Took me 3 months to get rid of it and it wasn't even in stock anywhere yet. I work as a Pro Dj, so when I buy something it's because I have a need for it. If I had the time to wait for months, I would've spared the time and money and gotten something that worked out of the box. I ended up with a pair of XDJ-700 and a DJM-450 because I needed something portable and cheaper than my NXS2 setup as I do more and more serious corporate events where I need to bring my own gear. The only missing is a booth out, but I have several solutions for that if I need it. Otherwise it's an excellent setup that paid itself in two weeks. Now it's money in the bank every time I use it. The way pro gear are supposed to work.

      @blakefeeldz1 I have one but the spare time I have is not enough to properly maintain it with new material or do follow ups. I play/travel too much and on the little time I have left I mentor younger DJ's into the art of DJ:ing :) . I have to think from all angles to guide new DJ's so that they can make educated choices when they are finding themselves as DJs. To me it's important to highlight all important aspects of the gear available and how different styles require different gear. I can only show them so much, but to make them aware of the possibilities is within my knowledge. The day I go back to play only on the weekends I may step up my TH-cam channel to be more serious.

    • @langlang420
      @langlang420 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dj-peterofficial2753 Seems like you've made up your mind to hate the unit and that can't be changed. It is what it is. It's one more shiny dj toy with a lot of functions and flashy lights. Most people that have it seem to be satisfied with it. It's main draw is it's a good dj unit that's self contained with no need for a laptop. You make some tradeoff with the engine software and some features to have a self contained unit. Not sure the sense in paying 1700 bones for a self contained rig and then hooking up turntables or using a laptop for serato. That really defeats the whole purpose of buying something like this.

    • @dj-peterofficial2753
      @dj-peterofficial2753 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@langlang420 So you think giving facts and critique about the unit that Denon, or any reviewers for some reason, didn't bother to mention, equals hate? That critique will give other DJ's a fair chance to know what they are buying and it will also give Denon info about what to change if they really want to compete with Pioneer Dj on a level where they actually get into the DJ booths. So far, several years in, they've failed completely doing just that. Every pro DJ i know, except of two, would rather turn down a gig than play on Denon gear. The two are the wedding DJ that bought my unit, and my colleague who also is Denons rep here in Sweden.
      Your reasoning about connecting more gear to the unit tells me that you have very little experience and have very little knowledge about what it means to be a pro DJ. Especially if you've been in the game for a long time like me and many others. We tend to have a lot of gear, like turntables, CDJ's and mix-stations we like to hook up to our 4 channel centerpiece. Then you have all the venues who still have DJ's turning up with CD's and occasionally vinyl. They may not be that many, but you can be pretty sure they are well connected and are good friends with the owners, so the possibility for hooking up the two existing CD-players to the centerpiece in the booth, and get full access to the mixer, is essential. Or you will not see that kind of gear in the booths, period. The gear in a pro DJ booth will have to be suited for all kind of DJ's. With all the power that the Prime 4 has got, why have they limited that unit in so many ways?
      Then, I'm not only thinking from my own perspective. Now and then I'm asked by venue owners what to buy next, or to a new establishment, and to do that I need to think of all the different kind of DJ's that will play there in the next few years. I'm using Rekordbox and usb-devices since 2009, but I know that CD users, vinyl DJ's, software DJ's and stand-alone unit DJ's will all be in that booth, even if the later is the most common. So you think Denon come to mind? Sorry, not a chance, not with anything they've released yet, including the new 6000 series. If there's a limited budget, the Pioneer XDJ-XZ would be my first recommendation, because of all the reasons above. If they want a full setup, the Pioneer NXS2 is still what the pro DJ's ask for, every time, so not really a choice. So why doesn't Denon just fix the stuff that DJ's like me don't like? CDJ-mode, a pro touch sensitive mechanical jog wheel, RGB wave forms, a screen that actually shows the full file name of the tracks without scrolling and a a premium software with intuitive workflow that actually works. That would be a start, and would really get Pioneer to react. Pioneer DJ hasn't lifted a finger to counter anything Denon has done so far, and their absolute knowledge of all the above is the reason.
      I don't hate. I use facts and the knowledge I have after using just about everything that has been in DJ booths for the last 35 years, and the knowledge I still gather at 51, still doing 200 gigs a year in very well respected venues. I may step that down a bit soon, but I won't stop until my ears fall off, and I will never use any gear that doesn't work the way I play, and I don't think anyone else should either.

      @@@dj-peterofficial2753 ha ha. Check you out. Calm down pro dj man, it ain't that serious. I've been in the so called "game" quite awhile as well and at this point i am satisfied with whatever i've done or doing. I just don't need to brag about it on a chat board. That laundry list of accomplishments means what? Anyone can say anything on the internet and even if it's all true i'm not impressed or give a damn. Actually true dj's who know what they're doing don't need 5, 6 damn players to bring the noise. I always laugh at people rocking 3 turntables and 2 players because they mostly suck or spend the night trying to cut up music past the point of musicality to impress people of how "skilled" they are. You sound like a Pioneer fanboy more than anything. Denon and other companies are coming out with gear the equal or better than anything Pioneer has. And if Pioneer is the so called industry standard it's only because so many silly dj's worry about what other dj's think of them than what's really important so they buy the overpriced Pioneer stuff when other stuff works just as well.
      The Prime 4's market is not for clubs per se anyway, it's mobile guys, hobbyists with deep pockets, weekend warriors and the club or mobile jock who wants a nice piece of gear to carry around to small venues. I can't understand if the Prime is so inferior and you love Pioneer so much why are you on a Prime 4 review video bitching so hard? You say you got rid of it so what's the damn beef? People will make their decisions based not on angry rants but balancing what they need and what the machine can do versus the impulse to cash out on yet another shiny flashy dj toy. None of these units are perfect, they all have shortcomings. The competing Pioneer unit for the Prime lacks features that the Prime has but is listed at 700 dollars more. It's draw is for the people that want pro level features on a 4 channel controller without a laptop. Yes the engine software needs work and they are hard at work to improve it. The software and the machine are not perfect but if having a self contained unit with a screen is important then people will have to make a tradeoff as to what features and capabilities they can live without. It's really that simple as no software or piece of gear is going to be perfect or please everyone. The Prime 4 is what it is and it's certainly much better than the piece of crap you are trying so hard to make it out to be.

      @@dj-peterofficial2753 damn man - you really don’t like this unit do you??? Guess what…I frickin love it!!! So do most the people that bought this unit thus the review is based on the majority not the minority. If you want stutter start and no vynil mode, why on earth are you even looking to buy new tech like this anyway? There’s a lot out there from years ago and a lot cheaper. Seems you need very little to achieve what you’re trying to and I stutter start thing is so dated now, I had it on a unit back in 2007 and never really utilised it. But hey that’s me! But just like you ranted about your annoyances, I wanted to chip in with my love for this unit so it’s a balanced argument. No unit will have everything and for the price, you won’t get a better unit with as many features…features that are current and not features that have been rinsed since 2007.
